How to Properly Store Your Food Long Term
Storing Oats: Oats are considered non-perishable, but they can go bad if not stored properly. To store oats for the long term, you must protect them from pantry pests, mold, oxidation, and bad smells. Here are some ways to store oats long-term: Freezing: Freeze the oats before storage to kill any insect eggs. Store them in an airtight container to protect against moisture and…

They Didn't
Once there was a town far removed from the capitol. Its citizens lived according to the seasons and held that all things would fall as they should. So when the regime came under fire, they were not alarmed. They did not lock their doors nor did they send their strong ones to go fight. They knew there were good people out there who held their interests and fought for their country in their stead.
And, of course, they were right. The Monarch fell and a new Monarch bloomed in their place. Not a scrap of the war came to the town's doorstep. Of course their crops were less than they should be - seed trade had screeched to a halt two years ago - but they were alive and still citizens of their country which had always looked out for their interests before.
So when the new Monarch sent a representative to their village, they were curious. They had neither rebelled nor contributed. What could the Monarch have to say to them?
"Resources are scarce after two years of war," the representative said. "We have come to see what is needed."
The citizens nodded for this was to be expected. The war had hollowed out their winter stores and delayed major repairs to roads and roofs. They needed much.
They were glad for the representative's arrival, but there was much work to do. They set up their stalls for market and did not pay him much mind. There was not much fare to lay out on their tables. They spent their time arranging each vegetable to hide its bruising and to showcase the best side of handicrafts made with amateur hands.
"By show of hands," he said, "who needs new tools to work their fields?"
Such a silly question! The representative had to have seen their fields while riding into town. He knew the barren state of them.
(They did not see he rode in a covered carriage, so sick by the motion of the wheels that he could not open his eyes.)
Seeing no hands, the representative moved on. "Who needs grain to see them through winter?"
Again so silly! Their storage gaped open and empty at the other end of the square. Surely he knew they needed grain.
(The representative thought it charming to have an empty barn as a communal gathering place and made a note to bring the idea to his own hometown.)
"Very good," the representative praised. Not a single hand! He had been to 40 towns already. What a relief to have one not on the verge of collapse! "And your roads? Your bridge?"
At this, some of the villagers rolled their eyes. The last storm had wiped away their bridge. The representative had to take the long way to come into their town square because of it.
(The representative asked to take the long way into town as his report claimed the village had a rope bridge which would make him even more violently motion sick.)
"And shelter?" the representative asked, checking No on every box. He would have said they needed new roads, but what did he know? Not a single one raised their hand. They must be used to traversing such pitted and rutted roads. "Do you have adequate shelter for the long winter ahead?"
Villagers chuckled for they did not have adequate shelter now. The autumn leaves blew through their eaves and their thatched roofs were gray with age. They had no materials to repair them, nor talent. Did the representative not see that their carpenter's booth at the market sat empty?
(Next year, the representative will do a survey of the town himself. He will count the artisans and craftsmen for his census. He will sleep under their roof to judge their condition for himself. He will eat their food to judge its quality. This year...well. Too many needs in too many places.)
"Thank you for an easy visit," he said. He turned back to his carriage. "See you in the summer."
The villagers watched him go in shock. To think he would leave so quickly! Well, it was fine. He had seen their roads and roofs, their storage and fields, their empty market stalls and slim market fare. They didn't need to worry.
They didn't.
The representative hummed to himself as a distraction while the carriage dipped and rolled away from the town. He thought that it was very good that they needed no craftsmen or grain or tools. This village lay in a valley that would become impossible to traverse in the winter months. He would have to act very quickly if they needed help.
But good! They didn't.

I went down the internet rabbit hole trying to figure out wtf vegan cheese is made of and I found articles like this one speaking praises of new food tech startups creating vegan alternatives to cheese that Actually work like cheese in cooking so I was like huh that's neat and I looked up more stuff about 'precision fermentation' and. This is not good.
Basically these new biotech companies are pressuring governments to let them build a ton of new factories and pushing for governments to pay for them or to provide tax breaks and subsidies, and the factories are gonna cost hundreds of millions of dollars and require energy sources. Like, these things will have to be expensive and HUGE
I feel like I've just uncovered the tip of the "lab grown meat" iceberg. There are a bajillion of these companies (the one mentioned in the first article a $750 MILLION tech startup) that are trying to create "animal-free" animal products using biotech and want to build large factories to do it on a large scale
I'm trying to use google to find out about the energy requirements of such facilities and everything is really vague and hand-wavey about it like this article that's like "weeeeeell electricity can be produced using renewables" but it does take a lot of electricity, sugars, and human labor. Most of the claims about its sustainability appear to assume that we switch over to renewable electricity sources and/or use processes that don't fully exist yet.
I finally tracked down the source of some of the more radical claims about precision fermentation, and it comes from a think tank RethinkX that released a report claiming that the livestock industry will collapse by 2030, and be replaced by a system they're calling...
Food-as-Software, in which individual molecules engineered by scientists are uploaded to databases – molecular cookbooks that food engineers anywhere in the world can use to design products in the same way that software developers design apps.
I'm finding it hard to be excited about this for some odd reason
Where's the evidence for lower environmental impacts. That's literally what we're here for.
There will be an increase in the amount of electricity used in the new food system as the production facilities that underpin it rely on electricity to operate.
well that doesn't sound good.
This will, however, be offset by reductions in energy use elsewhere along the value chain. For example, since modern meat and dairy products will be produced in a sterile environment where the risk of contamination by pathogens is low, the need for refrigeration in storage and retail will decrease significantly.
Oh, so it will be better for the Earth because...we won't need to refrigerate. ????????
Oh Lord Jesus give me some numerical values.
Modern foods will be about 10 times more efficient than a cow at converting feed into end products because a cow needs energy via feed to maintain and build its body over time. Less feed consumed means less land required to grow it, which means less water is used and less waste is produced. The savings are dramatic – more than 10-25 times less feedstock, 10 times less water, five times less energy and 100 times less land.
There is nothing else in this report that I can find that provides evidence for a lower carbon footprint. Supposedly, an egg white protein produced through a similar process has been found to reduce environmental impacts, but mostly everything seems very speculative.
And crucially none of these estimations are taking into account the enormous cost and resource investment of constructing large factories that use this technology in the first place (existing use is mostly for pharmaceutical purposes)
It seems like there are more tech startups attempting to use this technology to create food than individual scientific papers investigating whether it's a good idea. Seriously, Google Scholar and JSTOR have almost nothing. The tech of the sort that RethinkX is describing barely exists.
Apparently Liberation Labs is planning to build the first large-scale precision fermentation facility in Richmond, Indiana come 2024 because of the presence of "a workforce experienced in manufacturing"
And I just looked up Richmond, Indiana and apparently, as of RIGHT NOW, the town is in the aftermath of a huge fire at a plastics recycling plant and is full of toxic debris containing asbestos and the air is full of toxic VOCs and hydrogen cyanide. ???????????? So that's how having a robust industrial sector is working out for them so far.

Little things the Raccoon and Friends Squad do for a New Kid!Reader during and after a battle.
Raccoon:
☆ Shares food with you mid-battle, even his beloved honey-soaked sopapilla. He's pretty selfish on the field (as with everything else), so he doesn't share with anyone else. Expect the rest of the team to get pissy he's not sharing with them.
"Fatass, Captain Diabetes is literally collapsing, give him some fucking food!"
☆ Checks on you first after the battle, trying not to seem like he cares too much, but he's even willing to 'shed' his claws off for a moment because it's next to inpossible to bandage you up with them.
"The fuck?" He snaps, struggling to open up a band-aid pack with his sharp digits. "Fuckin' shitty Terrance and Phillip band-aids, these Canadians don't know anything about battle, New Kid."
Captain Diabetes:
☆ Stays right by your side, often in front of you. Most of his attacks are head-on, and he can take quite a few kid. Sweet Scott is more than willing to take a few hits for one of the few members of the franchise who are kind to him.
"Not to fear, new kid! No hits to tough for the power of diabetes!"
☆ Always asks for you to 'sidekick' for him. He loved being by your side when Cartman first had you partner up with him after joining the franchise. His desire to have a sidekick is a mix of it making him feel like a real, respected member of the franchise, and a slight fear if you hang out with the others, you'll realize he's kinda lame in comparison to guys like Raccoon, or heaven forbid you switch teams and meet Mysterion.
"New Kid, hey! Listen, if Raccoon assigns us partners today, will you be mine? I've even got some super snacks for us to share!"
Human Kite:
☆ Kite's always willing to provide aerial support, or pick you up to help you avoid an enemies attack. This of course pisses of Raccoon, who just gets laughed at when he takes a hit.
"Ey! Kite, you fucking traitor jew, save me! I'm the fucking leader!"
"Shut up, I couldn't lift your fatass if I wanted to! Hop on my back, New Kid."
"Ey!"
☆ He's got a bunch of little home remedies his mom gives him when he goes out to 'play', and even some packed food. After a battle, he's more than happy to plop down on the curb with you and laugh at Cartman crying post-battle.
"My mom made her special stew if you want some, it's cold as balls out here..."
Mosquito:
☆ To be honest, Mosquito can't do a whole lot to help himself, much less you, but he's gonna try and show off, just for you. Whether it means flying in and draining some enemy blood, or even taking a hit to the head because he's too busy flexing his barely visible arm muscles.
"Check it out, New Kid! I'm getting pretty ripped, bzz bzz!" He immediately gets clocked by an enemy, but please don't make fun of him crying 😥
☆ After battle, he's in charge of hydration, so he'll go around and hand out water bottles, and 'blood' for himself, which you've come to realize is kool-aid powder in sprite. He'll give you your water bottle, and hope you won't poke fun at his streaky tear marks and wobbling lip.
"H-heres a bottle, drink up for... for strength, bzz bzzzzzz." He's outright sobbing now.
Fastpass:
☆ Fastpass makes sure to crack extra jokes when you're hanging around, throwing away his respect for comedic timing to slip in a one-liner after every. Single. Hit.
"C-consider t-t-this ass-kicking e-expedited!"
"Did someone o-order t-this fist with s-s-same day delivery?"
☆ Fastpass is pretty much ready to take off after a successful fight, especially if it's the end of his patrol. Hop on his back, and he'll take you somewhere cooler than this storage facility you just whipped Prof. Chaos's ass in.
"L-lets go! I've g-got a coupon for City Wok, and I've got some post fight mu-mu-munchies!"
Super Craig:
☆ He's not really enthusiastic during battle, so if you get injured or knocked out, then he'll step in and fuck up the opposition. Otherwise, he's more than willing to ditch mid-battle and go doing something more interesting.
"This fucking sucks, new kid. Let's go get a slushy."
☆ He knows fighting can be pretty stressful from when he used to battle alongside Tweek, before the whole Freedom Pals incident, so he's happy to take you back to his house to distress with him and Stripe.
"Don't worry, Stripe. Me and the New Kid really showed those assholes not to mess with Raccoon and Friends. Now, give him a carrot new kid, he makes this real funny squeak..."

Determination!: The all blue night (platonic)
Masterlist for the series.
I put in Zeff’s manga reasoning for loosing a leg this one cause it makes more sense and is much more impactful in my opinion. Like I get they didn’t want to put in he ate his own leg to survive because it’s super dark but I digress. Sorry for the slow rate I’m writing stuff school has been taking a big toll on me inspiration wise and kinda mentally too lol

At some point in a long while hunger becomes or less like second nature
You knew the feeling intimately
It starts as a burning pit that consumes your entire stomach
Eating through stomach lining as acid boils over and spills into the rest of you
It travels and burns
Eating you away as hands scrape against the midriff to try and alleviate the ache
The pain
The want
The need
The agony
But eventually the pain becomes background noise
As does all pain after so long
You’d died so many times in so many different ways and yet starvation is one thing that is familiar to you
And like how death is your friend whom you see oh so often
So is hunger
Nights spent alone clutching a completely empty stomach
The pain becoming almost a comforting sensation in its familiarity
At some point you’d just accepted that your stay hungry
That even when dying over and over again and occasionally treating yourself to a meal you’d stay hungry
Because even when you ate it was never enough
Stomach still aching and swirling in its emptiness and collapsing in on itself
At some point a long time ago you used to go to bed with a full stomach and now each night your rocked to sleep by the pain of an empty one
Things used to be different
And you can’t remember what that was like anymore
So you just accepted as it was
And so you accepted you’d be forever hungry
Ending up a cruise ship wasn’t your intention but just as most things that happen to you it quickly becomes a new experience
And as always you go with the flow of things
Ending up on the cruise wasn’t planned
Nor was ending up somehow being found by a young chef boy who helped cover for you
But as always fate seemed to have different plans
And you just rolled with it
The boy’s name was Sanji, he was 10 and helped you hide in the storage area of the cruise
At night he’d sneak you out
With hands much like your own, scarred yet retaining a soft and caring quality he’d guide you through the halls
Past the creaky floorboards he knew by heart after 2 years of apparently living on this ship
Through the elegant dining rooms that housed grand chandeliers and checkerboard floors
Beneath the white table cloths of spotless tables he and you sit
Quietly looking at recipe books together or sharing stories between the two of you
Sanji was apparently from the north blue originally, but found himself on the cruise that now housed him called the orbit
The chefs found him one night
Scared and alone pillaging the kitchen
They took pity on him, partially out of genuine concern and intrigue at seeing the spark of talent in him
And since then he’s been cooking and calling this place “home”
Though that was a vague term
Much like yourself Sanji had ambitions beyond this small boat cruising the sea
He wanted to find something
Wanted to be something beyond an errand boy
Wanted to cook for anyone who’d have his food
To ensure they didn’t go to bed hungry
The way he describes it to you under a table in candlelight resounds something in you
Especially since he then takes your hands, promising he’d ensure you’d be full
That you’ll have the best food he can provide
All for you
Someone who’s still a stranger to him
A stowaway on a cruise meant for upper crust but not quite celestial dragons (yet they both act the same either way)
And he still promises he’d do everything in his power to make you content
He cooks for you as if you were someone important and not a stowaway
You nod along not having the will to tell him he’d never be able to do that
Not when you can’t remember what being full felt like anyways
And so you lie and say your full after you finish a plate even if your still staving
His blinding smile is able to make you feel the pain momentarily go away anyways
Sanji tells you one night of a place called “the all blue”
Supposedly it was the place that connected the north, south, east, and west together
Creating a sea where creatures from all four seas could coexist together
It was a chef and fisherman’s dream
But it was just that
A dream
Unattainable and imaginary
Or…at least that’s what everybody else thought
But not Sanji
And certainly not you
He speaks so hopeful about his dream
Of finding the all blue
Of proving everyone wrong
Of making his dream come true
He has the spark to do it
You can tell by his eyes alone
Sapphire hued just like the waves of the ocean he seeks
Similarly he sees a spark in your eyes as well
Almost seeming to Glow in hazy candlelight
And as you say you believe in him
In his dream
Believed in him when no one else did
Well, who’s to say he couldn’t become more motivated
Especially when your eyes shine like stars above the sea
And when in the candlelight highlighted by luminous stars hidden in irises he asks you about your dream
And in a haze of memory and emotion you tell him a story
One you cannot remember now but he holds dear in his heart
The story of wanting
The story loss
The story of loneliness
The story of a family torn apart
And the story of a devil fruit
By the end of it all you and Sanji sit in a darkened kitchen
Two stowaways on the same ship (though one is welcomed and the other is a mystery)
Both connected through the spark of a dream to sail the seas
One’s purpose clear while the other is hazed
But either which way the two talk in an empty kitchen and eat
Unknowingly both know what it feels like to starve
And both know loss
The two of you make a pinky promise, when he finds the all blue you’ll be the first to have one of his meals and you promise you’ll always be his friend
The raid of the orbit comes out of nowhere and somehow predictable at the same time
You’d come to know that your luck was something that ran out quite fast
And unfortunately you were no stranger to things such as this
But typically when a ship went down you were on the deck
Now instead you were in the storage
Stood atop boxes that were quickly being eaten up by cold unforgiving water
Yelling and screams echoes down quickly flooding halls
Waves crashing so Harshly against the ship that it begins to crack the wood, doesn’t help that the invading ship is bumping into it either
Confusion spreading through you like wildfire as the water continues to raise higher and higher
If you were anyone else you’d be scared of dying to such a fate
But your not
Your more worried about Sanji as you trudge through the wading waves
Feet becoming heavier and heavier with each step you take
Feeling as if concrete was slowly forming shoes over your boots or chains manifesting from the cold water that sucks warmth from you
By now it’s just above your waist and the effects of it really begin to hit you
Soon enough you’d be immobile
Unable to move and frozen like a Statue for the waves that’ll sink you with it
If you didn’t die from the cold first but you doubted that
With how the steadily rising of it your definitely drowning before hypothermia or shock
Though at this point even the pain of choking on salt water, it quickly filling your lungs for the burn of air loss to help fill the liquid
But then you hear sloshing through the blaring of your ears
And your name
It echoes and for a moment you need a moment to realize what was said or who even called out
But then it hits you
Sanji
He came back for you
Came back knowing you’d be in danger
Came back knowing you were in an area with water
Came back knowing you’d be eaten up by the waves if he didn’t
Came back because he knew knew you ate a devil fruit
Shaking cold hands grab your own and he drags you with him
But at the point in which the water gets to the point of immobilizing you he decides to pick you up instead
Placing you on his back as he drags both himself and you through flooding halls
Water splashes
Yelling continues
Sanji’s rapidly thumbing heart echoes through your ribcage as you helplessly lay your head on his shoulder
He should’ve left you there to save himself
You say so to his face
But despite that he yells at you for being an idiot
About how in the hell you expected him to leave you there to die
Not when he promised he’d cook you the first meal he’d make when he found the all blue
Not when you were the only one who enjoyed his cooking
Through the chaos you and him stumble out into the deck
The boat rocking violently as rain and sea water pelts down on you like hail
Your still weak because of this, the water soaking you to the bone
But thoroughly out of being submerged you slink off of Sanji’s back
But he holds your hand
It shakes in your grip
He’s scared and you can’t blame him
Swords clash all around the two of you, and somehow both of you weave through the carnage
For reasons you don’t like to think about he seemed used to fighting just as you were
But unlike you who content in laying down and dying he fights
Sanji will die clawing to survive
It’s why he picks up a sword
Why he points it at a pirate despite the fact he won’t win
Why he pushes you behind him even if your stronger and older than him
Because Sanji cares
And that’s something very rare now in the world
Even when the captain of the crew comes up to the two of you Sanji doesn’t back down
He proudly declares his dream
To find the all blue
And within that captains eyes you see it
That same spark, that same dream, that same determination
Though it’s dying and faded it for a moment lights up once more
You see it before being engulfed by water and grasp for it
You, Sanji and the pirate known as Zeff end up on a barren rock in the middle of the ocean
No grass nor trees
Just a jutting stone too far up from the water to safely jump in from or fish
Stuck after the captain with dimming eyes saved both you and Sanji after a colossal wave swept the two of you off ship
In the water despite your attempts in making Sanji let you go he didn’t
His grip had held stead-strong as he kept trying to pull you up with him
Unable to even as air escaped his lungs
But Zeff intervened
And the three of you were alive for now
But you could hardly call this living
You sit with Sanji looking out towards the sea, hoping for a ship to cross by
The food given by Zeff won’t last long to feed either of you past a few days, you know that
Even if Sanji does his best to ration it between the two of you
You know one of you won’t survive
And you know you won’t let it be him
Starvation is not a new go around for you
It’s probably your most common death besides dehydration, drowning or hypothermia
But it’s not a fun way to go even if the pain of a empty stomach became commonplace for you
You can’t let Sanji die that way
Not before finding the all blue
So when he’s not looking you hid the food he gives you
Hiding each piece and scrap of moldy bread
Keeping it from his sapphire eyes that become more and more sunken like your own
Keeping the fact how much pain your in from him
You distract from it all by telling him more stories
Of singing songs even if your throat feels like sand paper is scraping against it with each word
Each syllable
Each hum
But you don’t care
Not when you see his eyes reignite with hope
Not when his sullen face pulls up into a smile when you tell him of when you learned piano from a crew who befriended a whale
Not when they sparkle with curiosity when hearing of a land atop the clouds with white winged people
Not when you see the slightest bit of ease when you tell him of the constellations
Pointing to the stars and explaining their meaning
Telling him how no one was ever truly alone when the stars hung and watched
That’s what’s you had told yourself after so many weeks alone drifting
That the stars were watching
That you weren’t alone as you clutched Roger’s coat closer
Everyone was made of stardust and in the end that’s where they returned when they died
You weren’t alone, not with the stars watching over you
Not when Roger was watching over you
As you lay awake while Sanji clings to you for warmth you pull the coat closer around the two of you
One night as Sanji slept you snuck to the other side of the island
Zeff doesn’t face you, but the smell of iron lingers in a scent as familiar as the sea to you
Blood
It stains the ground and air in its presence
It’s familiar to you though, even if that’s a sad fact to admit
Sitting down next to the old captain you look to the night sky
Your oldest friend of them all
Bleak and empty with the stars being the only boots of light penetrating the deep darkness
Dead stars continuing to shine even after being extinguished, their light still traveling eons away to hit your eyes in their gentle glow amidst the sorrow and joy of life
His hand trumps your shoulder as you sit next to him, he can probably feel the bone beneath now paper thing flesh
Fat being eaten away by your body to try and survive
Leaving you a shell of yourself even moreso than him or Sanji
He can tell, and despite not looking in his diminishing eyes you can sense the horror in them
His shaking hand is enough to tell you
But despite it all you smile at him, now looking at the weathered man
Your eyes speak volumes that he can’t decipher in such little amount of time
But even with that he sees the understanding and acceptance of your own fate
And it crushes him
Grinds him down to his very spirit
And Zeff is left speechless as you tend to his tourniquet and stump of a leg
Still bloody and raw
You don’t flinch at the sight at all
If anything you gaze at blood and gore as if it were normal
Examining it as if it were a paper cut before assuring him it’s luckily not infected and that he cut off his blood circulation correctly
How you knew this knowledge was beyond him
And yet you knew it all the same
Humming a soft tune to yourself that he hears softly in the daytime across the little barren rock of an island
It’s raspy and quiet
And at the same time hauntingly loud in his ears
It seems to linger there even as you go back to Sanji
As does the fact you know what your fate is
And that there’s nothing him nor the boy could do for you, your body on the cusp of death that nothing could change that
But all the same you smile and sing in the face of it all
As if awaiting death like an old friend at a bar
Drunk on the remaining days of your life as you sung songs awaiting his arrival
You’ve always known when your time was near, you always seemed to sense it before it had come
Maybe death was a sentient entity and you’d just been able to sense it better as time went on
Or maybe you were just so used to your body shutting down that you’d noticed the signs before it happened
But either which was you knew your time was soon
There was no crying about it
Nor shivers of fear
If anything it felt more like a release and a hopeful occasion
Because you’d be released from the hunger if only to feel your stomach become empty again (but for the moment you wake in that void where you clutch a golden star the pain is gone)
If only to be released from this barren prison and find a way to save Sanji and Zeff
Because if you died you could get them help
That was seemingly the only purpose of your powers anyways
Die
Comeback
Rinse and repeat
You were fine with it though
As long as it meant you were able to help others (even at your own expense)
Every moment drags on
Every twitch of your finger takes so much out of you
Your body not having enough to power it
Despite it though you sit beside Sanji one last time
You sing for him and tell him stories
Tell him of the grand line and its wonders
The new world and its mystery
Trailing off occasionally for a break as everything becomes harder to do
The words seeming to slur and slosh around in your mouth
He can tell something is wrong
By the tears gathering in ocean blue eyes he knows
So he savours what you say
What you tell
What you sing
The words being engraved in his mind as paper thin skeletal hands clutch his own
That night he falls asleep much later than he usually did
He sits staring up to the stars you’d told him of
His grip deathly tight on your hand
Thumb lightly grazing your pulse as if to ensure himself your still there
Still breathing
Still alive
Using your pulse to try and keep himself awake even if it’s wasting precious energy
When he eventually drifts off with tears gathered in his eyes (knowing you’d be deathly still in the morning, cold and stiff and forever asleep) you tell him to find it
The all blue
He dreams of that place when you slip from his grasp
He dreams of the fishes mingling together when you take out the scraps hidden away and placing them in his pile
He dreams of preparing when you hobble over to Zeff
He dreams of cooking when the old man begs you to eat, to be selfish and you reply that you are being selfish. That you want him and Sanji to live for your sake and that was as selfish as it came
He dreams of serving you a dish when the old man can do nothing but hold you close and not want to let go and yet eventually you slip away
He dreams of your reaction as you say to Zeff your gonna go get some rest and promise to get them help with a gentle smile
He dreams of sitting beside you with his feet in the water wadding slowly, the sight of a sunset fading quickly into night
Briefly he jostles momentarily awake when you lay back next to him, smiling and telling him to get some rest
Halfway asleep he nods, partially thinking it was his dream because he’s had no one care for him like this except you (and mom and maybe Reiju)
So of course for the moment in which he’s only partially aware he sees it as a happy dream
You hold him close and he goes back to dreaming
He dreams of you sitting by his mom in that hospital bed, a dish for the two of you in her lap while you fade into the nothingness that is night
When he wakes that morning he wakes up alone and cold
He lays there for several minutes sobbing to himself as he notices the food he rationed out for you a few feet away untouched and moldy
Sanji sobs and his all blue eyes spill with tears
Across the island the old man does the same
Your body is not on the island and unknowingly to them faded to stardust
But both later come to the conclusion that in your last moments you’d decided to take the plunge into the water
To not leave them with a rotting corpse on that barren rock (since despite both of their hunger neither would eat your corpse. Zeff could eat his own leg in desperation but that was his leg, not the dead body of a child)
A reminder of both their failures
One in protecting the two young children he sacrificed his leg for
And the other in promising you’d be the first to taste his dream
Unbeknownst to them across the sea a young child reports to a ship of being a survivor of the orbit
Saying that they saw two others shipwrecked on a rocky island jutting out from the ocean
As a ship is sent off to investigate an odd group of crows end up dropping food on the barren island to Sanji and Zeff’s bitter relief
Two loafs of bread and a canteen of water being able to get them a few more days before rescue
The urge to go see them is there within your heart, but for their sake you decide not to
You’d caused them too much pain in the first place
You don’t want to rub salt in the wound
Plus you’d prefer oregano instead to season yourself
Sanji is a troubled child, he’s self aware to know that about himself
It’s perhaps why everyone hated him
But for some reason you didn’t and surprisingly enough so did Zeff
The two of you handed out kindness to him as if he deserved it
As if he weren’t a failure on so many levels both genetically and emotionally
In a sense he could get why you did it, a kid only maybe a year or two older than him
Someone he viewed as his closest friends despite the relativity of time spent together and as a sibling he wishes he had (the now healed bruises and scars you saw but never pushed to ask about as you helped put salves over the old wounds are evident of that)
Someone who sacrificed themselves for him, for some fucking reason saving your food for him even as you withered away before his eyes
If he had been more watchful he would’ve noticed it, but being half there on that island starved and scared left him more like a shell
Made him ignorant until it was too late
He could accept why you care, but he can’t accept why Zeff cares
Can’t accept why this man, a hardened pirate would give a shit about him
Offer him kindness
Take him in
Mentor him
And eat his own leg to ensure Sanji and you wouldn’t go hungry (partially worked in the end)
Sanjis sometimes gets kindness from women, moms warm hugs are evident in his mind as is the tears from a sister who tells him to go and be free
Sanji’s sometimes kindness from those his age, your the shining example but he can also think of a few guests in the orbit who played games with him in its halls
But most of all Sanji has never experienced kindness from a man
So seeing Zeff go out of his way for him
Seeing how Zeff on the rescue ship doesn’t let anyone hound him for invasive answers and ensures he gets food first
The good food the ship goers give in pity that he scrounges up with a snotty noose and runny eyes, Zeff always lets him eat first before having his own fix
How Zeff rubs his back as the both mourn
It means a lot more than words can say
As does the fact that Zeff on a silent night says he’s going to open a restaurant on the sea
And that he needs staff
A silent invitation that is solidified as Sanji quietly takes his hand with tears in his eyes
If the old man is crying Sanji doesn’t comment
Not even if raindrops fall down from a clear night sky and pelt his dirtied kitchen apron
Not when he’s held close in loving arms
Not when they sit in the deck both brokenly humming the song you’d sing like a broken record
Out of tune and off key
It plays when the two of them cook in the kitchen of the baratie
Sanji always looks to the stars when he takes a smoke break, Zerg occasionally accompanying him on the balcony in a somber silence
And even though Sanji hates wasting food he can’t help but make an extra plate sometimes
Can’t help but subconsciously make more than needed to feed someone not there
Zeff doesn’t comment on it and tells the others to lay off if they ask Sanji about it
He can’t judge when he sometimes does the same
Can’t when he sometimes looks out to sea and hears your humming in the waves
The small song sung by a raspy throat that helped ease hours of the days spent on that barren rock
Days in which he worries of his wound being infected
Days in which he worried for the boy who shared his dream and the child who looked as if they accepted death
And it stays with him
Because Zeff can so clearly see your sunken face when he spots a starved begger on the street
Can so clearly see how you curled up at night trying to keep Sanji warm as skeletal hands clung to you
Can clearly see your eyes when he stares out at night, the full shine of stars that looked so bleak
Can so clearly see you valued the two of them more than yourself no matter how either of them tried to save you
And yet they couldn’t do it
You weren’t here anymore, no body to bury or honour either
Nothing but a barren rock and cold salty water to serve as your grave
The chefs at baratie try to question when one night a year they see Zeff and Sanji leave a full plate of food on the deck
But none of them ever get an answer except it was for someone hungry they couldn’t feed
Patty always tries to chase away the crows that peck at the food but each year they return to eat that plate of food until nothing is left
And oddly enough the murder always seems to leave behind a loaf of bread in the plates place
Years later a cannonball crashes through the baratie
Cracking and breaking timber in of what Sanji calls a home
Besides that and a marine asshole with his beautiful date it’s a mostly normal day
Not the worse he’s experienced
Nor the best
Average would be the best way to put it, the baratie often times seeming more like a fight club rather than a proper cooking establishment
If the smirk wasn’t enough I n the douches face then it was the fact he wasted perfectly good food
The thought sickens him
A sunken starved face stares back at him from the wasted soup
Boney and dead
It leaves him sick to his stomach especially when a starved pirate stumbles through the door
And everything seems to come back to him all at one once
Especially the man’s eyes, they look too much like your own on those last few days on the hellish rock
Soulless and empty
When he places a plate in front of the starved man he doesn’t expect anyone from the dinning room to follow in his example
Not with their cheering of the man being beaten down by patty
But stepping through the side door someone follows
He extinguishes his cigarette and turns around just as he hears the clink of another plate being lowered to the wooden deck
And it’s there that Sanji freezes
Your eyes stare back at him in just as much shock
A cigarette long forgotten falls to the deck and is extinguished when he steps on it
His arms wrap around your own as tears drop freely from his eyes
You hold him the same as you did the last
One hand laced in golden hair while the other pats his back
His knees buckle from the weight of it all
This has to be a dream
He only sees you in dreams or in the faces of the truly hungry
Your sunken starry eyes staring out from others
But your here
And your healthy and safe and alive
And despite the fact he’s confused as all hell
He can’t help but thank whatever god there is out there that your here again
Not just a reflection of a memory
Your here
When you pull away he can’t help but want to pull you back just to ensure you don’t go
To not make the same mistake that Zeff did in letting you go that he still regrets every single day of his life
But as you pull away you don’t do so entirely, you hold both his hands as he kneels to match your level
A confused starved pirate watches confused alongside a boy in a straw hat
“I know you probably have a lot of questions” you say, your hands fidgeting in his with nervousness. You expect him to be mad, to blow up at you and yell at you to leave but he doesn’t, instead you feel his thumb rubbing circles comfortingly on your knuckles. “Think you can get the old man? I think I owe it to you to explain….oh and I’ll pay for the food. I grabbed a random plate on the way here”

Stan and Ford Hcs because I Have More Things To Say
[also post-show, just for reference]
The Stan o' War has had some Serious upgrades done to it to suit their expedition needs. Most of these are courtesy of not just Ford, but also Fiddleford, who agreed to help him and Stan with some bits of the machinery. It's built to handle basically anything and everything they might encounter now.
Where Stan couldn't help with boat-construction, he helped with resources. Having lived on his own on such a low budget for so long, the man has had TONS of experience sorting out essentials, portioning out food, and so forth. Oh, and he also dumped most of his guns into it somewhere. Y'know, just in case.
(I say most because he absolutely left at least one of the guns with Soos with some cryptic messaging about the "Pug Mafia" or something. Definitely had absolutely nothing to do with him being concerned for Soos's safety, not at all, shut the fuck up-)
They decided to completely and properly dismantle and renovate the portal room for other uses. I can't decide if it's still a sort of secret lab type place, or if its been changed to be a storage room for some of the Mystery Shack's weirder and more precious items. Regardless, it's significantly smaller now. You would never be able to guess what it was housing prior.
The two of them also took a day to burn/destroy all of Ford's Bill-related items together. It was extremely cathartic and became a fantastic and much needed bonding moment for the two of them.
[Shuffles a deck of post-it notes with various labels written on them] [Slaps the Autistic one on Ford] [Slaps the ADHD one on Stan] yeah. I'll feel like this one's a given.
They frequently do things at exactly the same time (like adjust their glasses, stretch, sometimes they'll even say the exact same thing too) without thinking. It's a twin thing they've done since they were little.
Unfortunately, the memory gun has had lasting effects on Stan's mind. He recovers the memory of the summer immediately, and everything post-portal fight comes to him pretty quickly as well (I'd say over the course of a few days to a week). But many events prior to that remain unclear. Recounting the details of whatever happened and/or showing him pictures will usually bring at least most of it back, if not at least a strong sense of familiarity. Ford can't help but feel a pit in his stomach every time Stan can't remember something. And he feels it grow every time Stan still can't remember it even after Ford explains it to him.
Much like their great-niece and nephew, Stan and Ford help each other through their flashbacks, their panic attacks, and their nightmares, the last of which Ford undoubtedly has the worst of. If you thought my description of Dipper's sleep paralysis was bad, imagine lucid dreaming your body dragging you around to who-knows-where, unable to will it to change course, while a disembodied voice cackles at your futile resistance. And then not knowing if that was a dream or not when you wake up.
While Ford appears to be the more "put-together" twin, Stan is the one who is much better at things like cooking and keeping places tidy. Ford spent so much of his adult life either living in a dorm or a secret lab, and that on top of the way he hyperfocuses on research, regularly forgetting to eat and sleep- Yeah. Stan is usually the one dragging him away to eat something before he collapses.
(Stan is genuinely a good cook, btw. He took a lot of time learning how to do it better over the course of the summer with Dipper and Mabel)
Much like Mabel, Stan will frequently start making stupid jokes to try and bring Ford out of depressive funks. He's never been great with words, that was always Ford's thing, but he's always been good at making people laugh. Or, at the very least, making his brother laugh.
And much like Dipper, Ford combats Stan's low self-esteem with logical reasoning based on what he's seen since he was rescued. In fact, he nowadays often brings up the fact that Stan rescued him as a means to combat it. He wasn't grateful in the moment, for a lot of reasons, and ofc he still thinks it was extremely dangerous and reckless to reactivate it given the risks, but he understands Stan's position better now. He's glad he was able to return. And he's even more glad his brother still wanted him to.
They always try to plan to give themselves time to make the trip back to Gravity Falls right around the start of summer. Often, they're a few days late to the party, but they're determined to never miss the chance to spend time with the kids.

You are who you eat

Summary: It seems there’s another careful serial killer roaming the streets of maimi and their police department

Chicken schnitzel with creamed watercress, a delicious meal even with a few ingredients changes.
I coated the meat in buttermilk with my left hand then dipped it in the breadcrumbs, with my right hand I scooped up more bread crumbs sprinkling them on top and pressed them down into the meat. I flipped it over and repeated the process until it was carefully coated in breadcrumbs, and did the same for three more pieces. I wiped my hands clean and checked on the watercress, tasting a small bit of it making sure it was satisfactory. I smiled happy with the taste even despite me adding my special sauce into the mix, I set my spoon down and turned down the heat returning back to my breadcrumb covered chicken substitute.
In just a little under an hour I finished cooking, I was reveled in the smell of a homecooked meal wafting through the air. I set aside the other servings to eat later and sat down at my kitchen island with a glass of wine. I cut into the schnitzel picking it up with my fork and carefully placed it into my mouth, I let out a satisfied hum as I savored that first bite. The media likes to portray all cannibals are barbarians but I’d like to think I’m far more civilized than that. What barbarian knows how to make a good watercress and human meat schnitzel? A wonderful meal made from the shit of the earth Caleb Sands, full time solar panel installer part time serial killer and fuck does he taste delicious.
I sipped my wine with a smile as I continued to eat, my diet was a strange one consisting mostly of human remains or food drench in their blood. I’ve tried animal blood and no blood at all, but none of them have that unique taste that human blood has. I’m addicted to and couldn’t stop even if I tried, and I certainly have tried. It’s not like I was born this way but thanks the trauma from my childhood, I was doomed to live as a cannibal thanks to Mr and Mrs. Kerrigan.
I shook away the thought as I finished my meal and started to clean up, I left my wine and took my plate to the sink. I gave it a quick rinse and place it into the dishwasher before doing the same with the rest of the dishes in the sink. Once I was done loading the dishwasher I gave the countertop and stove a quick wipe down, with the kitchen clean and the dishwasher cycling I took my wine and headed into the living room. I relaxed onto the couch with a sigh and turned on the tv, I didn’t particularly care for what was on I just needed a distraction and it was working. I was a serial killer and not even for the love of the crime, I hated killing people it was gross, gorey, and the clean up was exhausting. I tried so hard to see it as a means to an end but it was hard, I hated why I became who I am, I hated who I’d become, and I hated that I was addicted with no clear way to escape from it.
I wiped the tears forming in my eyes and downed the rest of my wine, I turned off the tv and left my glass by the sink. I ran a hand through my hair as I made my way to my bedroom, thankfully the wine and food made me tired. Watching tv hadn’t really helped keep me from my thoughts so hopefully just shutting my brain off entirely by going to sleep, I collapsed onto the bed and turned on my white noise machine. I snuggled under the blankets and let my mind focus on the noise and it wasn’t long before I had fallen asleep.

Work was busy that day with calls and requests coming in for the whole IT team, which consisted of Jackie a sweet and spunky girl fresh out of Texas, Sterling a flirty but nerdy guy born here and Miami, and Josefina a jokester from Tampa bursting with life. I loved them all and they made this job ten times more fun and enjoyable, speaking of them Sterling and Josefina came back into our tiny ‘office’. It was just an old storage room the stuffed four desks into, but it was our corner of the world and a second home.
“How was rubbing shoulders with the fraud department? Did they catch onto you yet Sterling?”
“Oh haha, it was fine just another stupid request. You’d think they would try turning it off and on again but the never do, and I’ll never get caught I’m that good.” He teased back at me as he sat at his desk.
“Some just aren’t as bright as others unfortunately.”
“Oh yeah and you are?” Josefina asked with a smirk as she spun her chair to face me hut I just rolled my eyes.
“Yeah I am, way smarter than you at least. Mrs. I thought the moon was made of cheese.” She turned red and threw a pen at me but I just dodges it.
Sterling and I couldn’t help but laugh as she just huffed and rolled her eyes at me, I smiled as I went back to typing up a report on my latest request. Sure the work was mostly menial task but the people made it worth while, and it wasn’t always boring. Sometimes I did have more difficult tasks to do but it was always fun and allowed me do what I loved, work with technology. Overall life was good, work was good, and my cooking was great. What more did one need in life?

Grey (Pt. 2)
Warnings: Verbal + physical bullying, angst, language
Word count: 5.9k
PART 1, PART 3
In the morning you're about to run out before you see a little note next to a sweetly wrapped bento box on the kitchen table. It read, "I hope he likes it (: - Love mom."
God, that is so embarrassing.
But If your lies truly made her that happy, then fine, you didn't have the heart to stop it. You're just going to have to suck it up and wipe food out of your hair later.
Atsumu gazes longingly at you the moment you tread in carefully. He's even more smug looking then usual, if that's even possible. Worse is remembering that he's going to be coming by your house after practice. The nervousness spreads at the thought. You hope it runs late, or maybe he'd change his mind and decide it was weird.
Or maybe he could just ditch you and leave you with all the work. That idea didn't seem so bad anymore.
Why didn't you say Saturday or even yesterday? You had more than enough time.
The bell rings signaling a break. You grab your lunch and sigh.
The group of girls pass and Kiyoko sends you a grave scowl as if threatening what she'd do to you if you didn't follow. You stand up and exit the classroom, tailing behind them.
With a serious expression Atsumu observes their movements until you all leave.
Kiyoko leads you to one of the bottom floors no one goes to and signals a motion with her head. "Storage closet, now." You open the door for them, head lowered to the ground.
How pathetic. You're practically giving them an invitation to bully you.
You're slammed into the wall causing a topple of brooms and mops to fall at your side. Kiyoko holds you by your collar, and you still have your lunchbox clutched hopelessly in your hands. One of the other girls pulls it from you. There's a laugh when they share a gaze at the wrap.
"How cute. Your mom gave this to you?" One of them remarks, and you hesitate when the lid snaps open.
"Must've been. It looks disgusting."
Your back lifts then is slammed again, your head bouncing and hitting hard against the wall. Your knees collapse beneath you and an instantaneous sting is felt on your cheek after being slapped. Kiyoko's foot slams into your side and you hiss at the pain.
Just like that, your mom's sweetly cooked meal meant for your nonexistent crush pours over your head.
"And to think your poor mom is wasting her time cooking for you, what a waste."
The noodles are squashed into a mush at your scalp, mixing into your strands. Another kick hits your knee hard and you instinctively clutch it with a groan. A laugh erupts, and the empty box is slammed to the side. The door opens and they speak one last phrase to you that has you flinching.
"Just go die already."
Kiyoko scoffs when you say nothing, and the door closes.
A numbness swallows you whole.
You cried all your tears already, it wasn't anything new. The handle of one of the brooms falls into your lap, and a slop of spaghetti falls onto your shoulder. You glimpse up at the flickering ceiling light.
You'd usually take a few minutes to mull over the state of your life before you'd eventually get up, dust off your skirt, and go to the bathroom.
Cleaning the mashed noodles from your hair was as rough as cleaning out bits of wet rice grains. One by one, you pick it out, all while being forced to stare at your reflection. You hate how you look, and you wish you didn't have to see your pitiful face every time you went through this process.
Cold water pools into your hands and you splash it against your face. Wiping the sweat and grime off your skin was probably the only refreshing feeling that came of this, even if it was still pathetic. Your stomach growls.
"Yeah, I know.." You mutter to yourself, grabbing your bento to rewrap the cloth just as it was. All pretty and nice so your mom would never know how mistreated it was. Slapping your cheeks, you forcefully bring yourself to reality before going to class.
Your hand presses against your cheek, memorizing the glass window next to you. The trees are swaying, and it hurts a little that nothing in you even cared anymore.
"Why does she always smell like food every day?" A whisper is heard behind you. You sigh.
Thank god it was Friday. Even if 2 days at home didn't change anything from this reality, it was the only small escape you had.
Lazily waving, you greet your coach and the captain before starting practice. Lucy is the only one nice enough to grin at your arrival. You put your knee braces on and warm up. Your body is sore but you're still determined to stay on the team. This is the last hope you have to prove everyone wrong, you don't plan to mess it up now.
You take your position in the back and try to remember what Atsumu taught you. Knees bent at this angle, arms showing the front more, hands positioned like this, and you got it. When the whistle sounds you glue your vision to the volleyball. It flies over the net and you sidestep towards its direction.
Holding onto your breath, your arm touches the ball and sends it flying into the air. Lucy gasps and woo's, “Nice receive (Y/n!)" It takes you a moment to remember the game is still in play, but you're smiling happily. Miyu sets the ball and Angie spikes flawlessly against the blockers. A gleam sparkles in your eye.
"Don't get all excited, it was just one receive." Angie huffs, turning to you. You nod and get into position again. Lucy is serving, and hers are always difficult. Still, you don't back down, and you achieve your focus on the direction of the ball. It appears it's going to hit the side. Quickly it swerves towards you instead and you manage to bump it. Angie is blocked by two on the right, the left is covered by 1, and the center is in the back. Miyu jumps and eyes the left which makes the center switch direction.
With a thud, the ball falls to the ground. The whistle blows, pointing to your side, and the other groans.
"Seriously, a dump shot!?"
"I'll say, you even had me fooled." Lucy giggles, stepping to the next rotation.
Serve after serving you're effortlessly receiving the ball, and the excitement in your legs keeps up with the action. The adrenaline was making your heart stammer. You jump high to receive. Another spike is slammed your way and you dive, hitting the ball only with your wrist to send it shortly in the air. "Sorry! Cover!"
Miyu runs to your side and smacks it with her palm to send it up. It’s a little high, but Angie manages to spike it from the back, scoring a point. You throw your hands up in the air, wooing. Angie shoots you a small glare, annoyed, but not as harsh as the other days, and Miyu has a barely noticeable tug at her lips. The coach crosses his arms, seeming pleased.
You finally are back into your game. You aren't going to be the black sheep any longer.
Arms receiving a hard spike, the ball returns to the other side and Lucy spikes with all her might through the hands of 3 blockers for a perfect line shot. You run just in time and you attempt to receive it but it hits your side and bounces off. Combined with the kick Kiyoko sent you, it hurt a little more than you would've liked. A hiss escapes. Of course, just in time for Lucy to serve as well.
The volleyball is set in the air, and Lucy jumps to smack it down. It’s so fast your arms miss by a second and it flies past you. They score a point, and you breathe deep and concentrate. Lucy repeats the action, but you're there just in time for the ball. As you receive it, the force pushes you back and you hear a crack in your foot as it bends to the side. Groaning in pain, you clutch it desperately and the coach calls for a timeout.
"Are you okay (Y/n)?" A few teammates ask and you nod forcefully, pushing yourself to stand only to fall again. Lucy holds onto your hands to help you up and the pressure on your ankle cries out.
The coach has you sit on the bench. "It's just a sprain, no worry. Sit out for today."
There's a deep frown on your face. Fear and disappointment cascade on you. You're definitely going to be kicked off now.
The coach turns to you while you're lost in thought, wrapping your foot. A mind deep down a rabbit hole.
"You did well today." His tone is firm, but you know he means it. Surprised, you fixate on him and he's staring at the game ahead. A blush dusts your cheeks and you continue wrapping the sprain, a happiness blooming in your chest.
When practice ends you timidly apologize to Lucy who is walking your way. She pats your shoulder, "You did good today, don't worry. By Monday you'll be brand new again." You nod, blushing at the compliment.
"Thanks."
Comfortable silence falls, and you're just about finished wrapping your foot. All the girls left already, and you test your steps carefully, lightly applying pressure to your foot. It didn't hurt as bad with the cover which was good enough for you to walk home. You start humming happily while packing your things, completely lost in the clouds.
"Ready to go?"
The sound makes you squeak in fear. Your hand presses to your stammering pulse, and you see Atsumu smirking at your surprise.
You already forgot that was today, and you nervously shift your tone.
"Oh.. yeah.."
He waits for you to be a step in front of him so you can lead. God, why did you choose this option again? Yeah, maybe the girls would've been at the library, but they wouldn't do anything if he was there. You made the wrong choice. Ugh.
The walk is painfully awkward. it's silent, and feeling him at your side alone makes you incredibly nervous. He's pretty big and muscular for a normal volleyball player.
You perk to the sound of leaves swaying in the wind. Softly smiling, your hands grip your bag. You did something good today, the coach said so himself. This gives you the courage to speak. But.. mainly because the silence was becoming unbearable and you'd rather small talk at this point.
"How was.. your practice?" You shyly ask, and he appears a little surprised at the question. He snickers, and you pout. You knew it was a stupid question.
"Good."
Great keeping the conversation going (Y/n). It felt more unpleasant than before now.
He has that usual smirk, but his face looks relaxed. He takes his turn to speak.
"Heard you been receiving good now."
How fast does word get out? Sheesh. It must've been from one of the girls who hated you.
You scoff. "Let me guess, Miyu talks to you. Angie maybe?"
"No. Lucy. She seemed happy for you." Your face switches to shock. "I'm surprised honestly. Expected you to get kicked off the team. But I guess with my advice you made it hm?" He's annoyingly arrogant, but you're so caught up in the thought of Lucy being genuinely happy for you, her speaking to others about it, that you can't even notice. Your skin turns pink and warm.
"Yes, thank you."
He stops in place, and you're still walking, trapped in a daze.
"Hey." His harsh tone is enough to fearfully draw you out. You rotate to him, scared. Is this the time when he remembers who you are and bullies you?
Unexpectedly he pulls you close and his fingers graze your damp hair. You flinch at the contact, nervous, blushing at the closeness. He wanders beneath the layers as if searching for something. You're nervous, but you ease at the softness. You don't know what he was doing, or why, but it felt quite nice.
He swiftly pulls away and you blink up at his index and thumb that holds a piece of smushed-up spaghetti. You go blank, and he's staring at it the same.
He opens his mouth to speak. "Why do you have food in your hair?"
This was just about your luck.
"Oh look, my house is around here. My mom probably cooked dinner, I don't want to keep her waiting." Walking fast, you ignore him and keep your bag tight against you. He catches up to your speed promptly, silent, and your teeth grit against one another. You ignore him and fixate on the ground until you reach your home.
You stop in front of the home and bite your lip when your hand hovers above the doorknob.
Now you had to worry about your mom and dad embarrassing you even more.
You exhale a shaky breath. You just needed 1-2 hours, maybe even 3 and that was it. This would be done with, and the shame will die with you.
"Don't look so worried. I'm pretty good with parents." Atsumu has almost a relieving confidence in his voice
You nod and open it, instantly being greeted with a warm light. Your mother’s back is facing you, and she's at the stove, cooking. Your father wasn't home yet, he typically didn't come back till later.
"I'm home!"
You already know the moment that she turns around she's more than excited. Atsumu trails behind you, wearing a fake pleasant smile, and her eyes go wide.
"Miya Atsumu, a pleasure to meet you." He bows and your mother gasps.
"Oh, my-" You send her a quick glare that says don't you dare say anything bad. When Atsumu rose you fell into a smile again, giggling awkwardly.
"Come in dear, make yourself at home. You two must be starving." Your mother was already preparing the plates at the table.
You wave her off. "No Mom, really it's okay, we're fine."
She huffs, "nonsense. Come Atsumu, sit." Your brows knit together, and you open to deny the second time before Atsumu interrupts you.
“Actually, Miss (L/n) I am rather hungry, may I ask what you're making?" Atsumu walks ahead while you're stuck dumbfounded at the doorway. You scowl as he cozies up to your mother, and he returns your look with a smirk.
“I'm so glad you asked! It's one of my favorites actually." Your eye nearly twitches as he sits down, acting as if he's so intently listening to your mother ramble.
"It's rude to gawk (Y/n), sit down." She draws you out of the daze with a more serious tone. Yet you swear she's giving you the same smugness as he is.
You grumble incoherently, forcing yourself to sit down. Your mother stirs the food a little longer and then switches the heat off. Across from you, Atsumu is snickering quietly and, you're responding with a hardened glare. Once your mother turns, both of you are quick to politely beam as she sets the food on the table. You all share a pleasant thanks then begin serving yourself.
As awkward as this was, the moment the food touches your tongue, you're buzzing in delight. Your empty stomach greatly appreciates this.
"So tell me Atsumu, did you enjoy her lunch today?" Your mom chirps in.
You cough out, almost choking on a few grains. Your mother is smiling sweetly, completely oblivious. Here it was, this facade is going to be destroyed now.
"Yes actually. The spaghetti was wonderful." Your eyes widen as you fixate on Atsumu. He's mimicking that kind expression to your mom. and she's reveling in the fake news.
"You're going to catch flies if you keep gasping like that (Y/n)." She scolds you out of nowhere and he chuckles politely. You force yourself into normalcy, clearing your throat and eating, Truthfully you're greatly appreciating the lie Atsumu told.
You watch in your peripheral as he cracks a small joke that sends your mother chortling, a little too much. Although embarrassing, it was pleasant. He seems strangely at home and comfortable.
Atsumu offers to clean the dishes when dinner is finished and your mother waves him off politely. "No no, I couldn't ask you to do that. Don't fret dear, you two go upstairs and work on that project."
He nods, his tone filled with sugar. "If you need help at all, call me." It'd be convincing if you hadn't known how conniving he was.
"Oh my, what a nice kid." She nearly fangirls and you cringe. Once he rotates to follow you off to your room, that smug expression returns.
He lets out a tired sigh once the door closes, like being that fake was exhausting, and his eyes quickly turn serious. Admittedly, the thought of having him sit this close with you in your dimly lit bedroom, all alone, makes you feel.. sort of strange. You sit at your desk and take out your notebook, signaling for him to do the same
You're about to talk about the project details until you turn to see his darker expression. His tall stature or muscular build only aids in the way you shrink in comparison.
"Want to tell me why your mom asked me that?"
You still, mouth agape as you thought of what to say. Anything you'd say would only sound more pathetic than what he already thought of you. What could you think of that was better than your current situation? Gnawing at your bottom lip, you struggle to come up with a good answer. An awkward minute passes and you're still silent.
He slumps down next to you and sighs. "Fine, don't tell me."
You underestimated the space he took with the chair placement and his knee brushes up against your own. You pull away instantaneously, clearing your throat. His arm is nearly caressing yours and you shift uncomfortably.
“Um.. so, what part do you want to do?"
Atsumu ignores you to stare at your little pink standing pencil holder. His view then shifts to the stuffed animals on your bed, the color of the sheets, and the pink or rainbow pens you held. He stifles a giggle, and you turn a dark shade of red.
"Didn't think the teacher’s pet would be this type."
You shyly twirl your pencil around as you meekly ask, “What type?"
He leans back and smirks. "Pink, rainbows, little animal prints, you know, sort of the type to fangirl and go crazy over stupid things."
You mutter, annoyed. "Well, I’m not… I just like cute things."
"Good." He yawns obnoxiously, and you huff.
He is clearly getting way too comfortable, way too fast. If you didn't work on this now you'd have to do this weird meetup again. You peer at him expectantly. His hands cradle his head, elbows pointed out to opposite ends of the room. "Right." He remembers casually. "The project."
You nod. Yes, back to the topic at hand, finally.
"I already finished my side." He smiles and you blink in shock.
"What..?"
"Did it after practice yesterday, you know the day you were out "sick." He emphasizes that in a knowing way.
"Then..." You trail off, unable to find your words.
"I wanted to see if I was right about you. I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised. I expected neutral colors, not even a speck of dust, and zero decorations. I guess you're not as stuck up as I might've thought." He arrogantly speaks, and you're barely able to wrap your head around the situation. He acted like he wasn't done with his side, came over to your house, ate your food, cozied up to your mom, and entered your room, all to.. see your personality?
You ogle at him like he has 4 heads and he laughs. "Relax, it wasn't all for that, I'm not here to stalk you. We still gotta work together, it's not like i'd just be here for you alone." That comment kind of offends you but you ignore it.
It's quiet for a moment, and you straighten your back against the seat. "So.. what do you think I am then?"
He hums, then smirks. "You're a good girl. Sweet, and hardworking."
That shouldn't have made you blush like it did, and you avert your attention back to your work. Don't forget this is the man who made you cry only 3 days ago. He's just here to do minimal work and bully you.
"So.. do you want to merge our parts? Maybe you read mine, I read yours?"
Atsumu shrugs and takes out his notebook to slap it down in front of you. You give him yours and you open up his to find multiple pages, back and front of written work. He really worked hard on this.
He snickers at your shock. "Did you forget I have more skills than just volleyball too?" He taunts, reminding you of your previous comment. You frown.
"Sorry," you mumble.
You read from the top, and a few sentences in you're hooked to the way he writes so eloquently. The style is neat, and for being such an arrogant jerk all the time, he paid attention.
"It's not bad." Atsumu regards yours while flipping through the pages. "But you can work on your voice a little more."
You're visibly confused, and he further elaborates.
"This sentence, "if he was going to be out all day, then maybe he would-" it's too much over-explaining. You're losing the point in your nervousness." That is true.
"Just write "He is going to be out for the day." You glue to his words, nodding absent-mindedly. You lean to your notebook that's positioned closer to him, your arm brushing his unknowingly. He quietly fixates on you, and you point to another sentence.
"So.. like here, if I got rid of the "practically" or "really," then it will make the sentence more clear in this case?" You look up at him, eyes twinkling with some sort of excitement. He gazes for a little too long, and after a few seconds, he clears his throat.
"Yes."
You ah, but then slump.
"I like saying really's though. I feel like it puts more emphasis on something. Like if I were to say... I love ice cream! I'll say I really love ice cream, so they really understand how much I do." Your tone is energetic in a way he's never heard, and he can't help but smile.
"They'll know you do, just saying love is enough. Really, makes it a mouthful. Just make it simple. I love ice cream." The way you listen so intently to him has his eyes softening. You move to erase and rewrite, your lips pursing a little in concentration.
"Does that sound better?" You point your pencil to the new sentence, and he leans down to read it.
"Perfect."
You giggle a little and he gleams.
You blush and nervously fidget when you realize how hyper you're being. Your tone is a little more timid now, but it's eager as you point to another sentence. "Does this work together?"
"Try removing the "therefore."
Nodding, you hop back and forth between his writing and yours. His wasn't flawless, but you admitted, it was really good. He was so clear when he spoke, so to the point and confident, whilst yours was all muddled and scared.
You point at his sentence and compare it to one of yours. Erasing, you rewrite a sentence and shift the words around. You're so focused one would think he wasn't even there.
He's smiling and it begins to be a very pleasant exchange all up until he had to go.
Yet, after the exchange on Friday, no texts were exchanged with one another. You completed the project and that was that, no more communication.
There's a strange disappointment lingering in your chest. You wanted that, so why did it actually kind of hurt? Your mom even left you another nice lunch covered by a pretty wrap with a note nearby saying "packed extra for you and Atsumu to share (:" Shaking your head, you force yourself to move on to more important matters. All you need to focus on now is avoiding the group of bullies.
The bell rings, forcing you out of your thoughts. Rotating your head, Kiyoko catches your eye, and she grins evilly. She begins to remove herself from her desk. Here we go, you sigh.
You expect any minute for her to pass your desk, but she doesn’t, and you turn around, confused.
Kiyoko’s mouth is open in a gasp, and she’s paused, eyes glued to something moving. You follow her frantic view only to swiftly mimic it.
Atsumu was walking to you, directly to you. No, there was no way, right? That had to be wrong. He pauses a few inches from your seat, his hand holding his lunch. “Figured we’d polish our projects before tomorrow.”
“O-Oh, yeah of course.” You pull the notebook out that you had just packed up, and as you do that, you shoot a glimpse over to Kiyoko and the girls. She glares back at you a fit of fuming jealousy that knits her brows tight together. You’re relieved sure, but the fear of what they’d do to you once the period ends and you have 0 protection sets a pang of discomfort in you. But.. at least just for today, you can eat your food and not have to return to class with wet dirty hair.
When you’re not looking, Atsumu eyes the girls and they jump, their expressions changing from scowls to fear. They swiftly turn away.
“Here.” Atsumu places his bento on your desk, and you blink, confused.
There’s his smug smile, but it was softer strangely. “We wouldn’t want to disappoint your mother.”
You blush. Right.. that was true. He picks up yours in the cute cat wrap and chuckles at the pattern. Those were also now softer, and you hated to admit that it sent you the right kind of anxious butterflies. He unwraps the box and opens it, finding just enough food for 2. He is taken aback, yet eases quickly after, smiling sweetly. The sweetest you’ve ever seen, it's like you weren’t even meant to see it.
You shyly unwrap his and before opening it you nervously look at him. Opening your mouth to speak, his hand gestures to you. “Don’t ask if I’m sure or not, just eat it.” Although his tone was firm, it wasn’t as harsh as it always was either. You nod timidly and open it.
The smell of fried shrimp, sushi, and rice hits your nose. It was delicious looking, and after not having a good lunch for about 2 weeks, tears nearly protrude from your eyes.
“Thank you!” You hold your hands together and grab the chopsticks greedily. You slept late again. The dread of going to school last night kept you up enough to not be able to eat a proper breakfast again, so this was heaven-sent.
He takes a bite of your food and then pauses when he sees you scarfing up his meal like it was your last. Eventually, you catch him staring, and your face goes red. Bowing your head you shout, “Sorry!” and nonetheless, continue aggressively eating. He snickers to himself.
A few women in the class are almost frozen, their eyes deep-set in hatred and growling.
“He refused the lunch I made for him..” One girl mutters sadly to her friend who is also sunken.
“She’s eating his lunch.” Another girl across the class whispers.
“The nerve of her. He probably cooked that with all his time and love, and she’s inhaling it like a monster!” You’d think tears were running down this one’s face, she was that dramatic.
You clear your throat and place the cover onto the empty bento. The embarrassment is only now rushing to you when you realize Atsumu is only halfway done.
“Um.. thank you.. for sharing.”
He hums in acknowledgment while chewing on your mother’s cooking. “Tell miss (L/n) I loved it.” You blush and nod.
“I will..”
Kiyoko was practically twitching in a fury. She would get you back for this, whether you liked it or not.
Usually, you take your time to pack up your things once class ends for the day. You were always the last one out, but that always gave you some peace of mind. The hallways had a few students aiming around for who knows what, and there were no noisy bells or chatterers.
Today is a good day. Your stomach is happy, and you’re able to bring home a realistically empty lunchbox to your mother. No lies are to be created about how you shared it when you truly didn’t. Your hair is perfect, your clothes are clean, and you have a dull ache in your chest as you think of Atsumu sitting by you and eating. Why? You aren’t sure.
But you’re humming joyfully, feet walking slowly as a smile stains your face. Your foot is healed now, so you’ll be able to play. With the advice he gave you, you’re receiving plenty too. Prancing outside, you take a turn, making your way towards the gym, now nearly skipping in delight. The trees are wavering again, and the smell of sweet grass pierces your smell pleasantly.
You’re about to take another turn until you hear a voice that makes you stop dead in your tracks.
“What is taking so long?”
“Are you sure she didn’t take another route? Or go home for that matter?”
“She’ll be here, relax.”
Your heart speeds in your throat, and your feet feel anchored to the ground. They don’t see you yet, if you run they won’t know. Just turn back now, quietly, and you’ll be free for today. Walk slowly and avoid them. You silently rotate your legs, afraid even the dirt beneath you will make an obvious sound.
Your eyes meet with one of the girls in your class, and you frightfully gasp. Her hands are on her waist and she’s smirking. Your shoulders are shoved hard and a yelp escapes as you fall to the ground. It’s enough for Kiyoko to see your figure, and that same devilish grin stretches ear-to-ear. Panicking, you try to scramble away only for one girl to step behind you and threaten any further movement.
Kiyoko meets your terrified eyes, and she’s snickering, tilting her head.
“What, you thought you wouldn’t get your treatment today because Atsumu-san sat by you?” she scoffs and you’re shaking your head desperately.
“You know he only is doing this because of the project right? Tomorrow it’ll be back to normal, he won’t care anymore, and you’ll be treated the same old again.” Kiyoko giggles, and you’re eyes are still wide in fear.
Your shoulders are being held down by the girl behind you, and Kiyoko’s smile suddenly drops. A slap makes your chin turn from the impact, the sting burning into your cheek.
“I thought of something fun today.” Her hands grab at something behind her, and there’s a sharp gleam as she fixates on you. She pulls out a pair of scissors and you flinch when she holds it up to your throat. She reaches around to pull your hair, angling your neck into it. You don’t dare gulp or inhale, and you’re gritting your teeth at the pain of her fingernails digging into your scalp.
She angles her lips at your ear, whispering darkly. “I’m going to make you look more hideous than you already are. Then no one will look at you.”
Her tight grip leaves. You breathe in relief before she grabs a fistful of your locks and opens the scissors wide.
It’s about to snap shut on your hair before she speaks again. “If you talk to him again I’ll-“
“You’ll what?”
Kiyoko’s fingers waver, and she immediately becomes as stiff as a board. Her breath hitches, and your view is blocked by her body until she moves to the side, her grip on your hair escaping. Instantaneously the pressure on your shoulders releases too.
Atsumu is there, standing a few feet away from your forms, hands pressed to his waist. His eyes are serious and he’s not even smiling like he always is. You’re just as surprised, and you almost fall back to the ground without a stable grip on your shoulders.
“Ah,” he hums, a fake unpleasant lightness in his voice. “I knew well this was going to happen after I disturbed your little lunch get-together.” He tilts his head to the side, the ending of his words darkening. “Didn’t I?”
Kiyoko and the women are stammering, shaking, unsure of what to do or say. “A-Atsumu! I-I-” He motions his arm up, and his expression dulls coldly as he makes a closed fist. They mutually shut their mouths like they're being trained.
“To think you squealing pigs made me miss out on practice because of this.” His tone is low, an unquelled irritation bouncing in each syllable. They flinch, unexpecting him to sound so harsh. He sighs, slumping his form. It’s silent for a few seconds until he looks up again, a grave darkness shifting in him.
“You disgust me. Now get out of my sight.” His words come out like a screech in the silent atmosphere, and their breaths halt in their throat.
The one behind you instinctively dashes on her heels and sprints fast. Another near Kyoko does the same, a third following her until she is the last remaining. She stands peering at you and him, and he’s glaring as if prepared to rip her to shreds.
A frustration boils in her face and she forces herself to throw the scissors onto the ground, making you flinch. She can’t even muster a sharp glare as she looks at you. Instead she seems frustrated, ashamed, and hesitant. Her fists ball and clench tight before evidently leaving.
You’re still stuck replaying the horrific scene, and a terrible silence erupts. Atsumu’s glower disappears, and he’s suddenly above you, holding his hand out to you.
Pathetic… you're so pathetic.
You smack his hand away and his eyes widen.
“I don’t need your help.”
You pull yourself to your feet even if it hurts, revealing your back to him.
Anger. Embarrassment. Sadness. Disappointment. When you would go home today, you’d Slam your bedroom door shut, curl into your sheets, and weep into your pillow.
But for right now, your soles remain anchored to the ground, adamant on showing him that you aren’t just going to be a baby and cry, even if tears are threatening to escape.
You spoke as firm as can be, your voice cracking a little. “Just go away.”
It takes a moment before you can hear him finally walking away. All you can imagine is that his uncaring smirk is back like nothing happened.
A minute or two passes, and when you’re sure he’s gone, tears stream down your cheeks. You wipe them with the end of your sleeve, sniffling helplessly.
You just want to go home.

Trolls Headcannons
(BROZONE Edition)
[Hi yes. Welcome to another fixation.]
•The brothers got out of the troll tree BEFORE it got caged in by the Bergens. They only heard about the outer trolls being hunted, but never thought it would make it to the main settlement. All of them believed that Branch and Grandma were still alive.
•The brothers knew of other genres of music, even dabbling into a few of them. JD and Clay enjoyed techno and funk. Bruce enjoyed classical. Floyd enjoyed rock. No one really fancied country music.
John Dory
°JD felt like the group had to be perfect and loved due to their parents. Their parents (before they got "chosen" or before leaving after the last kid was born) had a wish-wash way of parenting, only giving positive attention when the boys did something of merit.
°JD acted more like a parent than a brother, assigning roles he felt fit his brothers in order to give them a better foothold in their life and career in the group. He blamed himself if they didn't seem to succeed.
° JD hasn't truly showered in like 10 years. Man is a "water's clean" kind of guy, and was promptly held down by his brothers for a cleaning. Rhonda helped by essentially being a pressure washer.
°JD found Rhonda as a baby pill bug and didn't expect her to get so big. He felt a little bad decorating her once she was big enough to house him, fearing that he was hurting her.
Bruce
°Bruce let go of his ripped image because of Brandi's cooking. This man fell in love with her food THEN her. He felt at ease with her, especially since she didn't know Brozone.
°Bruce grew his hair out for his little girl to play with since her brothers won't. He lets her put little braids and clips in from time to time, and he wears them proudly.
Clay
°Clay tried to go back for Branch during the escape, but got caught in a wave of escaping trolls. After seeing the collapsed tunnels, he believed that his family got out safely even though he never truly knew for nearly 20 years.
°Clay made it to other Troll settlements and became a CPA after leaving Brozone and before he attempted to go back.
°Clay bonded with Viva over the loss of family due to the split™. He would share all these stories about Branch and she would try to do the same for Poppy, even though she was barely a year old when they got separated.
°Clay's little admin hut actually is bigger on the inside. He dug out a little living space underneath to hold his bed, desk, and a small kitchenette. Its like his own little bunker.
Floyd
°Floyd did a self-discovery journey through the other genres. He hung around the rock and country trolls the longest due to them being more land-based tribes, even though country trolls don't particularly like visitors.
°Floyd made a name for himself in the indie scene, eventually making his way to Mount Rageous where he had a new contract in the works. He had hoped this small push would bring his family back.
°Floyd suffers from muscle spasms and PTSD after his time in the bottle. Branch was kind enough to help develop a wheelchair and other mobility aids for him to use in the jungle gym called Pop Village.
°Floyd experiences fatigue easier. One of the brothers is always ready to be a pillow or a helping hand when he needs to rest. Poppy goes to him when she wants to know what else the village can do for others like him.
Branch
°Branch's muted color is due to his many years in the gray. He still feels the effects of the fight™ and grandma's capture, and personally blames himself from time to time. He leans on Poppy and his brothers who assure him that things are okay. No one really knows if he'll fully get back to his bright blue.
°Branch kept an item from each brother, even if they don't know it. They're buried somewhere in storage. He only wears Floyd's vest cause he missed him the most and held no animosity to him.
°Branch knows exactly how to deal with his nephews and niece when their energy gets too high because of Poppy. Sometimes, he'll ask her to help since she already teaches the younger trolls in the village.

So I don't know how much of a reputation the Church has for food storage and emergency preparedness anymore. We used to(?) have prepper levels of infrastructure people could buy to store all kinds of food and water in their basements and doom bunkers, with lessons and messaging to back it up. But I haven't heard anything about it in over a decade.
That said, there is one thing I have always found to be super important. It doesn't really cost anything and pretty much anyone can do it regardless of their money, time, or space constraints. And for the most likely emergencies a person will encounter, it's the thing you'd need first/most.
Water.
Whether you get cases or gallons of water from the store, wash out and refill some two liters, or keep a couple of filled pitchers or spare water bottles in the fridge, have some excess water you can access just in case.
"Emergency preparedness" conjures mental images of zombies and dystopic societal collapse. What it should conjure instead are things like busted pipes and power outages, job losses and injuries, adverse weather and illness. You know, things that will probably actually happen to you at some point.
The only time I've ever had to use my water storage was in college when the pipes downstairs busted and flooded the lower apartments. We didn't have water for days. Everyone made fun of my water storage until it came time to brush their teeth and they needed some of that water. And of course I shared. That's what it was there for, and I had more than enough set aside for each of us.
All this to say: emergency preparedness is a useful way to think about more than just catastrophic societal failures. It's also things like having an In Case of Divorce fund, wearing a medical alert bracelet, and forming a support network of who would take care of you if you suddenly had to have a tooth pulled. The common, stupid stuff that makes life overwhelming but isn't going to kill you.
Emergency preparedness means having that kind of stuff in place ahead of time.

I am not a baby!! (yes you are)
(Ao3) (Masterpost) (previous) (next)
(Chapter ten baby!!!!)
Danny isn't stupid. He knew Giga Fish was still here somewhere. Watching him... Hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, oxygen ticking lower and lower as he darted back into the semi-safety of his base.
A backpack full of peepers and bladderfish smelled awful. Getting the fishy smell out of his suit was going to take ages! Bladder fish are natural water filters. The fabricator draws out drinkable water from the fish's well...Bladder. Ancients, he hoped the fabricator sterilized this with its little lasers.
Non vegan water...
Sam would have a conniption fit, Tucker would love everything about it. He'd find a way to contact them soon if they didn't find him first. The earful he would get from Jazz might just be worse than his giant stalker. Getting lectured by Jazz would be preferred over sitting here with a gigantic fish a few dozen meters away. At least with Jazz, he knew she cared about him. He didn't know what the big guy wanted from him. Danny wasn't exactly a snack you'd travel through the sea for.
Whatever the guy wanted, Danny didn't care. As long as they both stuck to themselves, things would go just fine...
Peeking through the curtain, Danny saw the massive eel-like fish curled up, staring directly at his base.
Danny really wanted to study the guy. What were his eating habits? He didn't seem to be interested in eating any of the fish around him. Both the sharp teeth at the front of his maw and the shiny bioluminescent stripes that drew fish closer to him suggested a carnivore, but his complete disinterest conflicted with this.
Could a fish be vegetarian? A fish capable of sentience like this one probably could, but Danny didn't want to shove his head in the lion's mouth to test that.
Drawing on his PDA, Danny sketched out the blueprints for a table with a trash bin that slotted into the left side. Two air-tight cabinets were built into it. One smaller one underneath the trash bin and one larger, like a fridge on the right. In the middle was a collapsible set of stairs that'd allow him to reach the top of the table. Maybe making the table shorter would be more convenient, but giving up that extra storage space along with his dignity would be too much for him right now. The table top was a bit too empty for his liking, so he added small drawers at the back edge of the table. A perfect place to store small blades and silverware when he created the blueprints for them. Overall, it was much more like a workstation with built-in storage than a table, but Danny still planned to eat his meals here just as he planned to prepare them.
The fabricator would've been sufficient to cook his meals, but the lasers vaporized the shit out of the organs and bones of the fish. Anything nonedible in a fish's body turned to dust. The dusted ligaments and organs gave the meat a medical taste, like using hydrogen peroxide as mouthwash. Sure, the lasers were cool, but what was the point of cooking if your food tasted like high-tech sadness? It was bad enough that the only seasoning he had was salt. He didn't need his food to taste like it was made in a lab. Gutting his own fish was a necessity. Anything he couldn't eat could be tossed outside for the carnivores to snack on. They deserved a little treat for dealing with his stupidity.
Danny built his little table close to his fabrication station, ensuring it was anchored to the floor and wall. An unsteady piece of furniture could flatten him into an ugly pancake. If his friends were here, they'd agree he looked much cuter when he's only fifty percent dead.
Quickly stepping up to the table with his backpack full of fish, he unsheathed his survival knife... The knife would've been so much more effective than his teeth when he fought the big guy. Danny fought the urge to facepalm. What's done is done, he bit someone like a feral raccoon, but everything worked out!
Gutting fish was more difficult than he'd expected it to be. It was hard to tell if his lack of experience or now tiny hands were what made the task feel a thousand times harder. Peeper blood was yellow, but his own was still a vibrant red that dripped onto the table with every slip of the hand. It felt like a fishing trip with Dad, only without the forty-minute lecture on the dangers of ghost fish.
Running his hands over the now gutted Peepers, Danny used all the power he could muster, freezing them solid. Spots danced in his peripherals, the floor spinning underneath him like a carousel. It took a minute or two to regain his composure. Sitting on the ground with his frozen fish head pounding, face flushed red. Forcing his powers was like trying to drink scalding hot coffee through a toothpick-thin straw. It left him out of breath, fingertips burning with no evidence of damage.
There was an ecto dampener on this planet, he was certain of that. One stronger than any of the ones his parents had built. A radius that reached far past the planet's atmosphere yet still remained potent enough to prevent any significant power usage.
Unfortunately for whoever put the field up, it didn't cancel out his powers completely. Maybe if it did, he would have died completely, saving the culprit or culprits from being mauled. If Danny was anything, he was a stubborn bastard, and there was no amount of dampening that would stop him from clawing the faces of whatever had the audacity to do this! If he had access to his powers he could've saved everyone!
Over a hundred people died because he wasn't strong enough to save them! Because he was prevented from saving them. Ships like the Aurora don't just crash and burn for no reason. Alterra might skimp out a bit on employee safety, but the engineers they hired for serious maintenance were top-of-the-line. Underpaid, but top of the line, they wouldn't make a mistake that could cause that much damage. The way the ship shook, it felt like something had hit them. Everything about this seemed more and more suspicious the more thought he put into it.
For now all he could do was survive in hopes of finding some kind of lead. Finding and stopping whatever was stifling his powers was number three on his to-do list. Just above studying the wildlife but below finding other survivors and surviving himself.
First things first was rations! Both he and any other survivor would need food and water. While he was set with his... questionably hygienic water, fabricating more was a necessity. Giga fish was still out there, Danny could feel eyes on him whenever he passed the glass. All it would take was a split decision to plop his tail in front of the hatch, and Danny was trapped in here to either starve or dry out like a sponge under a sunlamp.
Coral samples and crumbling chunks of salt were taken by the fabricator, turned into bleach within the blink of an eye. The PDA screamed at him, a pitch that could've made his ears bleed. Warnings flashed on screen, the AI desperately pleading with him not to put the substance anywhere near his face. A wild contradiction to the PDA entrance that recommended using it to disinfect his wounds.
Only when he used the bleach to fabricate more water did the tablet stop screaming. The water smelt chemical, and it tasted vaguely of metal coins. Like the overpriced bottled waters, you'd find at an airport vending machine. Laying the bottles on their sides, he stashed them away in the cabinet, placing frozen peepers between each layer. Cold water wasn't a luxury he'd be willing to give up, nor was it something he'd give himself a mind-splitting headache over. So the obvious solution was to turn the cabinet into a disturbing refrigerator with dead fish eyes that stared into the deepest depths of his soul!
Nobody ever said survival was aesthetically pleasing.
Walking back to the window, Danny stares flatly at the curtain. Apparently, the whole "You can't see me, therefore I no longer exist," rule didn't work on this guy, so the curtain was completely useless. Peeking past the cloth, he could see the fish staring at him. Didn't even bother to hide, just sat there like he didn't belong hundreds of meters down doing anything else.
If watching him gave this guy joy, he's going to do something nobody could be entertained by. No longer should he be the comedian for giga fish! He was going to do something so drastic, something he'd only done sparely over the past year! He was going to...
Sleep!
He collapsed down onto the floor, curling himself up with the low-hanging curtains. Spite made it all the easier for him to fall asleep.

𝐏𝐏𝐓𝐉: 𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐒
Time to show ya'll the Altercanons for The Smiling Critters!! :D
(I have already looong posted them on my twitter but again for the Tumblr peeps I will post them here! :3)
From Oldest to Youngest!
Enjoy!
Bubba Bubbaphant!
The smart and probably the most mentally stable one out of the bunch (more on that later-) being the oldest isn't really easy when you've got 7 younger friends most of which love to go on rowdy fun adventures, nonetheless he is always with them every step of the way whenever he can! (Mostly because he needs to keep them from accidentally getting themselves killed 💀)
His Talent
Bubba is capable of creating balls of light and is able to change the intesity of light sources around him, in combat he can create lightbulb shaped items and throw them at to flashbang opponents, disorienting them and giving him the advantage, though this uses up his own energy and so he needs to think carefully about how many he creates, or else he will likely pass out.
KickinChicken!
The self-proclaimed cool guy of the critters. An daredevil who's always put looking for ways to have a lil fun, all the while making Bubba slowly lose his patience 😅 even though he may come off as an arrogant jerk to others, Kickin actually cares a lot about his friends and others more than he likes to admit! Just don't get on his nerves or he will make your life a living hell whenever given the chance!
His Talent
He can whip out three items of his choosing, whether it'd be a simple screwdriver or a flat out atomic bomb, all of which seem to follow a common theme 💀 though he is only lmited to three wishes and after using them all up he'd have to wait for an one hour cooldown before he can create more items again.
CatNap!
Not a very talkative critter, neither is he really stable in ANY WAY to begin with, he went suddenly missing once for 3 whole weeks and came back never the same, for 9 whole months has he never ate, drank or even slept, and it's only a matter of time before one day he finally collapses in on himself...
His...Talent???...
He is able create sleep-inducing red smoke, making whoever is nearby inhale it and fall into a Deep Sleep... (it doesn't kill them dn)
DogDay!
The leader of The Smiling Critters! And CatNap's best friend! This lovely sunshine is always ready for an adventure and bring a smile to everyone's faces no matter who they are! He is always standing up for what's right, willing to put his friends before himself.
His Talent?
His body glows a range of red to yellow whenever experiencing intense emotions, the hue and the temperature of his body depending on how intense the feeling is, if it is too intense his body is capable of burning the skin off of anybody who attempts to touch him.
PickyPiggy!
The nature-loving and diet obsessed one of the group, she absolutely loves the wonders of mother nature, even owning an vegetable garden herself! She loves to eat but always makes sure she stays healthy when doing so! Though sometimes she is so entranced by eating food that she often forgets to keep up with the others and finds herself confused, she always feels like she has an reputation to uphold considering her father is a well-known cook in Critterville, to make things even less easy she has 12 younger brothers to take care of!
Her Talent
She is able to take and storage items within an infinite pocket dimension like a personal inventory in her pockets, though she needs to have actualy pockets for this to work, luckily she knows how to sew!
Hoppy Hopscotch!
The physically active one of the group! And DogDay's beloved little sister! This rambunctious lil rabbit is willing to take on a challenge if it means having fun! Though she is really accident prone so she often gets herself hurt! (Pretty frequently actually-) but even so she doesn't know how to back down! While impatient and loud, she is happy to protect her friends from danger!
CraftyCorn!
The shy and soft-spoken one! She's pretty timid but has an incredible creative side to her! She loves to create all kinds of art but most specifically loves to draw! Even though she may not have had the best first start of her life, but after moving into Bubba's home and becoming part of The Smiling Critters, she realizes she feels right at home.
Her Talent
She is able to mend and shape paint however and whatever she wants it to be! Whether it is colorful wings of freedom or another way to paint, she needs to have paint at her disposal though.
She is also capable of magic of her own! But due to her previous living conditions she was never able to tap into her gift and discover the wonders of unicorn magic all that much, though luckily Bubba has enrolled her to equestrian classes to help her with that problem! <)
Bobby Bearhug!
The sweetest and youngest one out of the group! She was found alone outside near the Critters' treehouse, ever since then Bubba has taken her under his wing and has been taking care of her since, it is unknown what happened to her parents it has been assumed that they had just abandoned her.
Her Talent
She is able to sense the true intentions of a person's heart, helping her know who is worthy of trust or not, she is also able to sense the emotions of an individual though this can be physically and even mentally exhausting, making her needing to take frequent naps to gain her energy back.
Aaaand that is all I have for today!
I hoped you enjoy these Altercanons and if you have any questions regarding them or this AU feel free to ask in my ask box! :3

Convention Guide: Basic Tabling Gear
September 2023
Whether you’re an artist alley newbie or you’ve been doing the convention circuit for years, putting together your table essentials is a crucial part of selling your wares at events and ensuring your weekend goes smoothly. In this guide, we’re covering the basics of setting up your first ever table.
This list is a non comprehensive assessment of things a tabler might need and should be used as a simple starting point. The four main categories we will cover are:
The Display
Behind the Table
Money
Quality of Life Suggestions
—🐝—
1. The Display
a) Tablecloth
Starting from the base layer, we’ve got tablecloths– an easy way to add some color and personality to your table. Your tablecloth doesn’t even have to be an actual tablecloth! You can use a length of fabric cut from a bolt at your local craft store. Convention tables tend to be 6’ long, so when selecting your fabric, look for measurements longer than 72” (183cm).
Play with color and texture to find something that fits the theme of your work on display. Patterns can be fun, but might distract from your inventory or signage if the colors/design are too bold and busy. Tip: your cloth may get messy from food behind the scenes or dust/dirt if you do outdoor events. Get something that’s easy to wash in your machine!
b) Display supports
Most artists these days use cube organizers that break apart into flat panels and connector joints. They are easy to store when not in use, easy to transport in a suitcase or tote, and you can change the shape depending on your table set up and inventory. Tip: constructing your display to include shelves that face you behind the table helps organize your backstock during the show.
These cubes aren’t your only option. Some people use milk crates, picture frames, wooden boxes, custom built shelves, etc. Consider what works best for you, your aesthetic, and your storage/transportation needs. When in doubt, you can always lay your goods flat on the table.
c) Signage
Having clear signage on your items to denote price helps people feel more comfortable purchasing from your table. Your price markers don’t have to be fancy. Prices written neatly on pieces of paper and paperclipped to your books or taped up next to your stickers is a simple and effective strategy. Some people print out a price list or use a sign board. It’s totally up to you!
Include a sign with your name somewhere in your display, including your social media handle if it is different from your artist name. This will help fans of your work more easily recognize you. Tip: use a QR code prominently displayed on your table that links to your portfolio, linktree, etc.
d) Banner/backdrop
Look out behind you! Whether it’s a banner, a backdrop, or something else, the space behind your seat can be put to use. While it is relatively easy to print custom banners at most print shops, many tablers cite this as an unnecessary expense, especially for first time artist alley participants. If you’d like to hang a collage of your work behind you, look for photography backdrop tripods, which can collapse and fold up neatly. The behind-the-table space is shared with other artists, and it can get cramped. Be mindful of your needs when deciding how to do a backdrop. Some artists opt to exclude a backdrop and just use their cubes to arch over them.
Optional: Decorate your table! Flowers, string lights, plushies, etc. can all bring a special one of a kind experience to your set up.
2. Behind The Table
a) Inventory
Now that we’re behind the table, let’s talk about what’s going on back here. Starting with inventory. If you’re absolutely unsure how much to bring, a good starting number is about 10 of each item. If you sell out, congratulations! You’ll know what to bring more of next time, or you’ll know you should raise your prices. For storing inventory during transportation to the con and while at the show, you might consider simple boxes, an accordion folder, or a portfolio case, depending on what kind of items you’re bringing. Reminder: if you’re using display cubes, structuring them to give you shelves on your side of the table will help you keep things organized.
b) Suitcase/storage tote
Under your feet will be your suitcase/tote box, and perhaps a dolly, if you used one to wheel your boxes into the building. It is recommended that your suitcase/tote has a lock on it, as you’ll be leaving inventory overnight. Hopefully no matter what you use, it has wheels of some kind. All this gear gets heavy. If you are not using a wheeled device, make sure to check your pack’s weight as you assemble your supplies. You will have to carry it from the parking garage or bus stop through the convention center, and back out again at the end of the show.
c) Cover cloth
What else is in that box? Your cover cloth. This one is optional, but some artists like having a lightweight cloth to cover their table when the day is done. Something like a vinyl picnic tablecloth works perfectly. The cover cloth helps prevent anyone from accidentally knocking your things over or having things go missing.
d) Business cards
On your side of the table, you ought to have plenty of back up business cards. You’ll have some of these out on the table for passersby to pick up, but this item is the number one thing you’re going to hand out the most of. It’s always better to have too many rather than too few. For a single three day convention, you might need 200+ cards. Make sure your website/online shop is easy to find on your cards. Cute business cards go a long way to making your table memorable long after the con has ended.
Bonus supplies: Here’s a short list of things you might need throughout the weekend to touch up your display. Keep them in a bag and bring them with you every time you table!
Masking and clear tape
Spare paper for impromptu signage
Sharpies and pens
Zip ties
Scissors
3. Money
a) Card reader
The most commonly used card reader is Square, but there are alternatives. Research their fees and prices to determine what fits your needs. You’ll want to get a hold of a card reader and set up your account well in advance of your show. Card readers require wifi/data to work and will only work in your country of business, so take that into consideration when packing for your show. Most convention halls have wifi (sometimes at a cost), but if your show is outdoors you might be relying on data.
b) Cash/change
Cash is king! Make sure to bring enough cash/change for your show. About $25-50 in small bills is usually enough if you’re also accepting card. At the end of the day, consider tucking your big bills away in a secure location in your hotel room. If something were to happen to your bag, you’ll appreciate not having your entire weekend’s earnings in it!
c) Fanny pack
Keeping your cash attached to you at all times is smart. People often use fanny packs or cross body bags to manage their money.
4. Quality of Life
a) Backup battery
Since you may be using your phone to complete transactions, or maybe you’re drawing on your iPad with time to kill, you’ll want to bring a back up battery. Most tables don’t have access to electricity, so having a battery and charging cables is a good idea.
b) Hand sanitizer & masks
One hand sani pump out front and one behind the table. You’ll be handling money, shaking hands with strangers, and touching surfaces that thousands of people have been touching all day. As long as there have been conventions, there have been con plagues. You don’t want to get knocked out with a cold (or worse) so masking is great!
c) Table buddy
If you’re able to, bring a friend to help you table. Cons will often give tablers 2 passes (one for you and one for a friend). They can help you grab coffee or lunch, get change, package a big purchase, cover you for bathroom breaks, etc. Table buddies are truly the unsung heroes of artist alley.
d) No table buddy? No problem.
Check in with con staff and volunteers. Many comic cons will have a green room for artists to take a snack break and decompress, and con staff will help guide you there. Some conventions also enlist volunteers to help sit your table while you’re away. They’ll make sure your table stays in order, direct people to your business cards, and inform curious patrons when to expect you back.
e) Fun stuff!
There will be plenty of downtime. Con hours are long and often slow in the mornings. Bring something to keep you occupied, but not too engrossed, so you can easily pull away to greet customers and fans. Fidget toys, a puzzle book, knitting or crochet project are all great ideas.
f) Get Comfy, Eat Well, Stay Hydrated
Going from your quiet desk to the high octane energy of artist alley can be a shock to the system. Some items to help reduce the fatigue are: noise canceling headphones during downtime and breaks, sunglasses to combat the fluorescent lights and rest your eyes, slippers or comfy shoes for under the table, and layers of clothing. Convention halls can fluctuate temperatures wildly. With lots of AC during the summer, sweaty crowds, and the flow of traffic to your table, you’ll be working up a sweat fulfilling transactions one second then freezing after sitting still for a minute.
Most importantly, have a small cooler with snacks and drinks. You may not get a break, but it’s important to stay hydrated and energized.
—🐝—
The next time you're at a convention, take note of displays that inspire you. #ArtistAlley and #ConTable tags on Instagram or TikTok can connect you with creators sharing their setups. Your table design is an opportunity to be creative and express yourself, while also learning along the way what works for you. Most tables, however, are built up over several convention seasons of trial and error, so while it’s good to take note of others' displays as a source of inspiration, try to keep your first table relatively simple. The more you table, the more you’ll be able to identify your needs for you and your merchandise.
We’ll close out this blog post with one final suggestion. Big, multi-day conventions can be fun, but they can also be expensive. Your tabling supplies and inventory aside, if you’re doing a show away from home, you’ll contend with table fees (often $250-450 USD), hotel, transportation, meals, etc. And not every convention is a good fit for your wares! Small, local events and art festivals are a great, low stakes, relatively cheap (or free) way to start tabling. Check your area for zine fests, queer makers markets, and craft fairs.
Sound off if there’s anything we missed! Good luck on your tabling adventures.

Wet Beast Wednesday: Cuvier's beaked whale
Today's Wet Beast Wednesday post is going to be a deeper dive than usual, because this week's post is about the deepest-diving whale. Beaked whales are an elusive and poorly-understood family known for diving to extreme depths. Of the 24 known species, Cuvier's beaked whale is the most well-known. Dive in (get it?) to learn about this cryptic cetacean.
(Image: a Cuvier's beaked whale underwater. It is a small whale similar in appearance to a bottlenose dolphin, though stockier and with a shorter snout. The dorsal fin is far back on the body Its body is gray and covered in white, circular scars, likely bites from cookie cutter sharks. End ID)
Beaked whales are poorly-studied because of their remote habitats and tendency to spend more time underwater than other whales. It is also often hard to distinguish between different species without a close examination. The name comes from their skulls, which are notably toothless and elongated around the mouth, making them look like they have beaks. Beaked whales only have one pair of teeth and they only grow out in males. Female beaked whale teeth remain in the gums and never grow. Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris), sometimes called the goose-beaked whale, is large for a beaked whale, with the larger males maxing out at 7 meters (23 ft) and 3.5 tons. They resemble dolphins in body shape, but with robust and stocky bodies. Their bodies are gray to light brown while the heads are lighter in color, especially in males. The melon is relatively small and the mouth is shorter than in most beaked whales, making it easier to differentiate them. The melon is an organ found in toothed whales that aids in echolocation.
(image: a beaked whale peaking its head out of the water. It is likely a male due to its white face. Its back is densely covered in long, whit scars. End ID)
Beaked whales have multiple adaptations to deep diving. During dives, the heart rate decreases and blood flow is redirected to more important organs and tissues. The lungs collapse, leaving oxygen storage to the hemoglobin in the blood and myoglobin in the muscles. Long periods of time without breathing results in the buildup of lactic acid in the blood, which can be toxic. Beaked whales have enlarged spleens and livers that may help filter lactic acid out of the blood. Their bodies are very streamlined and the flippers can be held very tightly against the body to reduce drag. There are likely other adaptations for very deep and very long dives that have not been studied.
(Image: the skeleton of a Cuvier's beaked whale. It is somewhat short for a whale, with small flippers. The skull is long and flat. End ID)
Cuvier's beaked whale is the most widely-distributed beaked whale, being found worldwide in tropical to temperate waters. They prefer to swim in very deep water and are rarely seen near shore. Cuvier's beaked whale holds the record for the deepest and longest dive of any marine mammal. The records (recorded by satellite tags) for depth was a dive to 2,992 m (9,816 ft) and for length was a 222 minute (about 3.75 hours) dive. The whales will usually make multiple shallower dives to around 500 m (1,640 ft) between each deep dive, possibly to give their bodies time to recover while still searching for food. They spend very little time at the surface between dives, usually no more than 8 minutes. These short surface intervals may be to avoid predators like orcas. Occasionally, longer surface intervals of several hours have been observed. Their hunting behavior changes depending on how deep they dive. On shallower dives, they remain silent, possibly to avoid being overheard by predators, while on deep dives, they use echolocation to find prey in the darkness of the deep ocean. Cuvier's beak whale hunts via suction. They open their mouths while retracting the tongue and enlarging the throat to create a vacuum that sucks prey into their mouths, which is then swallowed whole. Dissections have revealed that squid make up over 80% of their diet. The whales forage in small pods that coordinate their dives and hunting strategy. It has been speculated that the teeth of males are used to fight over access to females. Males have been found with scars that would seem to fit being raked with another male's teeth. Males also generally have more scars than females, which would be consistent with them fighting each other. Almost nothing is known about beaked whale reproduction, though calves do live with their mothers as in other whales.
(Image: a Cuvier's beaked whale jumping out of the water. End ID)
Little is known about the conservation needs of Cuvier's beaked whale. They are likely the most abundant species of beaked whale due to their wide distribution. They are known to be threatened by entanglements in fishing nets and have been harvested by whalers in the past. They may be targeted by the Japanese whaling industry, but it is difficult to be sure due to the secrecy of said industry. Cuvier's beaked whale is known to be vulnerable to sonar, especially mid-range sonar. They have been observed avoiding areas where sonar is used and use of sonar has been correlated to mass strandings and symptoms of decompression sickness (the bends). It is possible that the sonar drives them to ascend from dives too quickly, leading to potentially fatal gas embolisms. Notably, several mass strandings happened in the Canary Islands while naval exercises were performed there. Once those exercises stopped, the mass strandings stopped as well. Cuvier's beaked whale was described and named by naturalist, zoologist, paleontologist, and virulent racist and misogynist Georges Cuvier, who described it using a skull he thought was a fossil. There has been a small push recently to begin using the name goose-beaked whale instead to keep from honoring him.
(Image: a Cuvier's beaked whale poking its head out of the water. Its body is light gray, with a few scars. End ID)
