Welcome to Music Monday when we bring you wonderful tunes with jewelry, gemstones or precious metals in the title or lyrics. Today, Philadelphia R&B legends Boyz II Men sing about a long-lost love in their 2014 release, “Diamond Eyes.”
In this power ballad about a man longing to be reunited with the dream girl of his past, the soulful singers croon, “And then the sun rose, our bodies unfroze / And it turned us both gold / Your diamond eyes glowed, yeah.”
Songwriter Coley O’Toole uses the precious metal reference to symbolize the innocent and exciting “goldenness” of youth, an idea first invoked in the 1923 Robert Frost poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” Her diamond eyes connote strength, brilliance and perfection. In the end, the song’s protagonist says he will never lose hope that she will be found.
“Diamond Eyes” was the first single released from the group’s 12th studio album, Collide. The album reached #6 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #37 on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart.
The four-time Grammy-winning act, which features the sweet harmonies of long-time members Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris and Nathan Morris, has sold more than 60 million recordings and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. The group was named by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) as the most commercially successful R&B group of all time.
Originally known as Unique Attraction, Boyz II Men was founded in 1985 by friends Nathan Morris and Marc Nelson at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. The original group often rehearsed in a school bathroom due to its excellent acoustics.
By the early 1990s, Boyz II Men earned international fame with a series of Top 5 releases, including “Motownphilly” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.” The group originated as a quartet, but became a trio when Michael McCary had to leave the group in 2003 due to multiple sclerosis.
In 2017, a section of Broad Street in Philadelphia was renamed “Boyz II Men Boulevard.” That section of Broad Street happens to be the home of the high school where the boys got their start.
Check out the audio clip of Boyz II Men performing “Diamond Eyes.” The lyrics are below if you’d like to sing along…
“Diamond Eyes”
Written by Coley O’Toole. Performed by Boyz II Men.
When we were young, our hearts were strong, And they beat as one, till the day had come When I thought that you were gone
And then the sun rose, our bodies unfroze And it turned us both gold Your diamond eyes glowed, yeah, ohhhhh
When we were young, our love was strong We beat as one, till the day had come, And I thought that you were gone
And then the sun rose, our bodies unfroze And it turned us both gold Your diamond eyes glowed, yeah
I would search near and far
Drag the seas and mine the dark, Search through every place I think you are I would search near and far Drag the seas and mine the dark And never losing hope that you be found, ohhhh
And then the sun rose, our bodies unfroze And it turned us both gold Your diamond eyes glowed, yea, your diamond eyes glowed, your diamond eyes glowed, your diamond eyes glowed, ohhhh

We The Kings : Strange Love Review
We The Kings are an American rock 5-piece from Florida. Band members include: Travis Clark on lead vocals, Hunter Thomsen on lead guitar, Danny Duncan on Drums, Charles Trippy on Bass and Coley O’Toole on keyboard. Releasing their debut self-titled album in 2007 with the platinum single “Check Yes Juliet”, reached over 250,000 sales. 6 studio recorded albums later and they are currently on their 10 year tour around America and UK. Strange Love starts with the track “Love Again”. It’s very upbeat and a song you’d want to hear at a party of festival. It’s catchy vocals mean you’ll most definitely get this song stuck in your head. The second track “Howl At The Moon” is one of my favourites on the album. It has a different sound than the rest of the album and is one that will catch your ear when the drums and guitar kick in during the chorus. “Completely” is a great song to but on an upbeat love song playlist. The lyrics are dominated by love but much like “Love again” the heartening feel of the song is something you can’t miss. “Heaven So Close” is another one of my favourites from this album. I find myself having this song stuck in my head quite a bit. With a continuous positive feel, this love song is perfect for you and your friends to jam out to. “Xo” is another different style of song on the album. I have very mixed opinions on this one. I love the dynamic of the chorus but I’m not too keen on the style of backing music. However, the help of vocals from Elena Coats, helps the album have a completely different twist. Her vocals strengthen the song a lot. The next song “From Here To Mars” brings back the We The Kings sound back into the album. The lead guitar in the bridge makes the song feel very energetic, I think this is the song that describes the album for me. “All The Way” follows on “From Here To Mars” and allows the album to feel flat out lively and perky. The 8th song on the album “Jenny’s Song” slows down the album as we reach the end but it’s a song you’ll catch a tear to. The dedicated song pours out emotion and makes your heart throb. Similarly the song “She” follow an alike meaning. “She” is much louder and really makes a statement from “Jenny’s song” The last track on the album “Runaway” I think is my favourite from the album. It slows right down, to end the album. The love song rips out every piece of emotion and the addition of an orchestra behind really adds to the emotion running behind this song. It’s a powerful song to end this album. Concert Refresh | We The Kings, Cute Is What We Aim For, Plaid Brixx, Brightside| Revolution Live
Annie and I went to the We The Kings 10 Year Anniversary Tour this past weekend. I decided to visit her in Ft. Lauderdale this time so we can take her dad, a longtime We The Kings and Cute Is What We Aim For fan, with us! It also happened to be the final show of the tour, so there were lots of shenanigans.
youtube
The last time Annie saw Cute Is What We Aim For, Shaant Hacikyan yelled at his fanclub for taking pictures. This time, he almost cried because he was so happy the band was touring again. He thanked We The Kings for giving them another chance and announced Cute Is What We Aim For will begin working on album 3. It would be 9 years since the release of their second album Rotation.
youtube
We The Kings put on an amazing show. They opened AND closed with “Check Yes Juliet.” They also played their first album We The Kings in its entirety. They also played “Sad Song” and covered Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” while Travis Clark visited his wife and daughter. Another highlight was when Travis and Coley O’Toole switched places and Coley sang Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”. Travis was very excited about that happening!

A/N: Any videos I upload are not complete songs. I do not like recording complete songs while I'm attending a concert unless given permission. Live in the moment! Artists like seeing your faces not your phones :)
