Hogsback Half Marathon
Hogsback Half Marathon
September 28, 2019
Tumblr media
And with this race, the fall racing season begins for me- I decided to take it easier this fall, running only 4 half marathons- I just didn't put in the miles over the summer to justify even trying to run a full without being completely miserable.  This will be the first fall in a long time(2010!!) that there hasnt been at least 1 marathon.
This race is a great race- it is up in the northwest corner, so lots of trees and not so many cars- exactly how I like it.  Its also one of the largest fundraisers for Running For Rescues, an organization I started funding raising for after I found out about them last year, at this same race.
Tumblr media
I got there plenty early, even before the early start headed out- parking can be tight because of it being at the reservoir, so Id rather get there early and sit and read.  I wandered my way down the hill to the finish area to catch up with a friend- she had planned to run, but an ankle injury changed her plans.  Got to spend some time with her, and then on to the pre-race ritual of hanging out in the portalet lines.  But finally, its go time!
The race starts with a little bit of uphill- but this is New England after all, hills are part of the game.  After the uphill, the next couple miles are actually downhill, and the groups spread out pretty quickly.  I had no idea what I wanted time-wise for the race, and I had initally started with the 2:05 group to try and dampen my tendency to run the first miles way too fast, but I still found myself pulling ahead of the group.  I was nervous about doing that, mostly because I really didn't want to go too fast and blow up, but I was feeling ok, and it was downhill, so I figured banking a minute or two couldn't hurt.
What I think is most interesting is this is a race without any really significant landmarks.  Normally I think of races and I think of a horse statue, or some old inn, or Elizabeth Park, etc etc...and yet, other than recalling the race from prior seasons, I remember some hills a little more than others, but there's no particularly distinct things.  Which I think I love! We so often find ourselves counting the miles more in races because we're looking for the next marker, the next split- are we on pace? Are we running negative splits?
Tumblr media
But here? You just relax and run.
Tumblr media
So maybe this wasn't my fastest.  Hey, maybe its actually a new personal worst.  But maybe there's something to be said for just enjoying the day and the fact that I can still run, despite all the moodiness of my heel, a tight hip that just refuses to do what I want it to...im still out here.

This is the damn between Hogsback and the Colebrook River Lake. I’m facing Hogsback for these pictures. If I turned around I would be facing the Colebrook River Lake, but of course, the sun ☀ was on that side preventing a usable photo.

After a great night hanging with the family and enjoying the flavors of my youth, we had a “slow day”.  The first order of business, after enjoying a cup of coffee on my brother’s front porch, and a kilbessa egg and cheese breakfast sandwich (with double meat) at Radwick’s Coffee and Sandwiches (The best coffee and sandwiches in Connecticut!), was to find that elusive Welcome to Massachusetts sign.  Once caffeinated and fed, Erik and I headed off.
We were only about 25 miles from the state line, I looked at the map and figured we would run 183 up through Colebrook and into Mass, pick up the sign and be on with our day.  183 was a great road to ride . . . until we hit the state line.  Not only was there no visible Welcome sign, it appears as though the good Commonwealth of Massachusetts wanted to let people know they crossed into Mass by braille in the roadway . . . The distinct change in the surface from the smooth pavement in Connecticut to the potholed, rough Mass road served to wake us up, in case the earlier coffee failed us.  We rode it out and turned south on a no name road - I’m sure it had a name, I just don't remember it.  Following signs towards Canaan, Connecticut, we crossed the state line and looked back over our shoulder to see if there was a Welcome to Mass Sign on the north bound side . . . Survey Saysssssss??  Nope!  Heading west again then turning north to try again on another small back road.  Crossing the line for the third time, because you know what they say, the third time is the charm - right?  Not this time . . . We headed west until we picked up Route 7 . . . another nice riding road, but a major link between the western parts of Mass and Conn.  We rode 7 south into Conn (with a nice welcome sign) and again looked north to the Mass line to see the Mass sign - NOTHING!!!  I was about to give up when I figured that Route 7A split off from route 7 just south of the line and headed into Mass from Connecticut, so we’d give it one more try . . . Finally after crossing the state line on six roads, half of which were fairly main roads, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts decided to welcome us.  We stopped and got our pictures then headed off for the rest of our day - What was an anticipated 25 mile jaunt - turned into a 65 mile adventure.
From the Mass line, I turned us towards Torrington, CT to pop in and surprise my mom with a visit.  Fortunately she and Jay were home, so we had a nice visit before Erik and I needed to head into Litchfield to have lunch with Dave and Patty.  It’s always great to see them!  Though Dave wasn't on his bike, we discussed riding together again soon.  I miss riding with him . . . we have to follow up on that . . . After our lunch with Dave and Pat, we decided to surprise someone else . . .Kevin.
Arriving at what I thought was my friend Kevin’s house, we found a For Sale sign out front and the house was empty.  We took a picture of Timmy on the sign to send to Kevin so he would know we were there.  About this time, the lady living next door came out and told us that Kevin had moved.  I’m guessing he told his friends about this move, but apparently we weren't on that list . . .  A quick call to Kevin’s wife, we found out were Kevin was - He was working on one of his rental units about a half mile away, so, led there by his old neighbor we popped in and surprised Kevin.  All in all great visits all around.
Heading back to my brother’s we spent some more time in his pool and enjoyed a fantastic meal with him and his wife before heading to bed.  The next morning Erik and I loaded our bikes, and left the piece of heaven that is my brother’s home.  Heading back to the store, we grabbed another breakfast sandwich before saying our goodbyes and heading home.
I led Erik on a mixed ride home.  The weather called for storms all day and we sure we were going to get wet.  We wiggled along nice roads until we got to Easton, PA, then decided to hit I-78 and maybe we could head west ahead of some of the storms.  We largely succeeded, with only some welcome rain drops hitting us, but never enough to get us to stop to put on our rain gear . . .
Along the way, my Voyager turned over 80,000 miles.  Man its hard to believe we have covered that many miles together over the past eight years . . . I Love this Machine . . . No matter where we may ride, She always takes me to my Nirvana . . .

Seaside Style! 9 Classic Mediterranean Revival Homes Now on the Market
realtor.com
Mediterranean Revival–style homes in the U.S. aren’t simply limited to Florida and California. In fact, you can find the signature red-tile roofs, stucco interior walls, wrought-iron balconies, and arched or circular windows in states such as Wisconsin and Connecticut.
These homages to seaside villas offer a striking (and welcome!) contrast to their neighbors’ more conventional abodes.
Combining accents from a variety of styles—including Spanish and Italian Renaissance, Beaux Arts, Spanish Colonial, and Venetian Gothic—Mediterranean Revival homes were mostly built during the 1920s and 1930s. Meccas for the style were—and still are—in Southern Florida and Southern California, where villas with ornate architecture and lush foliage easily blend in.
We found nine shining examples currently for sale across the country. For buyers who want a home with quirky yet elegant design—plus historic charm—Mediterranean Revival style checks all the boxes.
Pacific Palisades, CA
Price: $5.7 million
From the iron railings on the staircase to the ornate iron door, this four-bedroom home in the tony Miramar Estates area exudes old Hollywood glamour. It’s also the epitome of coastal cool—with the beach just 2 miles away, water views are on offer from nearly every room. It was designed and constructed in 1928 by architect and city planner Mark Daniels. Fascinating details include Malibu tile, custom millwork, and vaulted ceilings.

Shorewood, WI
Price: $585,000
Located a few blocks west of the beaches of Lake Michigan in a suburb immediately north of Milwaukee, this four-bedroom home was built in 1927 by John Topzant as his personal residence. The Wisconsin home is fresh off a period-appropriate renovation. With a fireplace in the living room, a completely updated kitchen, and iron railing on the staircase between levels, the nearly 3,000-square-foot home is a gorgeous (and relatively affordable!) find.

Colebrook, CT

This is the lone surviving work by architect Addison Mizner in the northern part of the country. Built in 1911, the mansion is set on 22 blissful acres with an orchard, tennis courts, 75-foot pool with pool house, petanque courts, and a guesthouse. There are eight bedrooms (four have a fireplace) and seven baths in the 8,500-square-foot home. Inside are a wine cellar, chestnut-paneled walls, a gym, and home theater.

Built in 1935, this massive four-bedroom, seven-bath villa sits on tony Roxbury Drive in one of America’s most affluent ZIP codes. The entrance consists of a two-story foyer marked by a dome ceiling. Built-ins in the library and coffered ceilings in the living room are just two examples of the expert and enduring craftsmanship. There’s also an indoor-outdoor wet bar, screening room, and wine cellar—making it a paradise for California-style entertaining.
