My Stargate Rewatch continues!
On to Episode 7 of Season 1 of Stargate - Cold Lazarus. Despite writing a lot about it, I’m not sure how I felt about this one.
SG1 are on a planet with bright yellow sand and broken blue crystals scattered around. While Sam and Daniel are examining the crystals, Jack walks a bit further away, takes a closer look at one intact crystal, and gets zapped! And a copy of him returns through the Stargate to earth.
There’s not much to report about the crystals so SG1 are on downtime until their next mission. The copy looks through some photos and letters in Jack’s locker, and we see it has some of Jack’s memories, before it goes to Sara’s house ‘to find Charlie’. Sara (and her dad, who is at the house because Sara is fixing his car) interpret this as Jack struggling with his grief. The copy eventually collapses after some awkward conversations with Sara, though I get the sense that the conversations help Sara as Jack has never talked about it before.
Meanwhile, Sam and Daniel have stayed on base and Sam is investigating the crystals. She realises the blast marks look like staff weapon blasts, so they get Teal’c to shoot one of the crystals with his staff weapon. In the gate room. Without asking permission 😀 Eventually they’re able to communicate with the crystal entity. Meanwhile, the real Jack returns through the gate and is not happy about being locked up.
Janet confirms Jack is really Jack, the crystal explains that the Goa’uld destroyed them after an Goa’uld was accidentally killed on the planet, and Sam realises that the crystal is emitting dangerous radiation, and the copy will be doing the same. They track the copy down to the hospital, and SG1 go in to recover it, meaning that Sara, who brought the copy to the hospital, realises what’s going on.
The copy explains it was trying to heal Jack, but ‘your deepest pain was not physical’ and takes the form of Charlie. SG1 take it back to the SGC, and Jack takes it back through the gate.
Further Thoughts
I have mixed feelings about this episode. It’s interesting to see a truly ‘alien’ species, and the plot gives viewers more background to Jack’s character, especially if they haven’t seen the film. We find out how Jack closed himself off after Charlie’s death, and how that affected his relationship with Sara. The line about Jack’s deepest pain not being physical was really moving. But in some ways the episode feels ‘off’ and the issue of how it’s all explained to Sara is never explained.
It’s also annoying that when they realise the copy came through the gate, they search the base for it, but don’t bother to check the security logs to see if the copy left the base, even though we know from Children of the Gods that the base is high security and you have to sign in and out. Continuity, what continuity!
Some interesting points I noticed
- SG1 are checked for radiation after they’ve come through the gate - did that continue? The reaction to an unauthorised off-world activation is intense. But there were no checks that identified that the copy wasn’t the real Jack?
- They still have a shared locker room (surely there’s space for a separate women’s locker room!). I assume this is military only. Ferreti’s name is on the locker next to Jack’s.
- Sam talks about her brother and his family, and that she misses seeing them as they’re in San Diego. But I’ve read that later in the series she says they’re not close.
- Sam doesn’t know that Jack has a family, and says to Daniel that she’s worked with Jack for months but knows nothing about him. Daniel then explains what happened to Charlie.
- Downtime for SG1 is mentioned for the first time, but Sam and Daniel stay on the base to research the crystals. Them staying on-base during downtime happens in various fics too, so it seemed like a cliche to see it.
- Teal’c asks Jack (actually the copy) to show him more of earth, as Jack has promised to do this. We see his quarters (very empty ☹️) and see him watching TV (riots on the news and heavy metal music). Not the best impression of earth!
- Daniel calls Sam ‘Captain Carter’ when they’re investigating the crystals, so they’re still quite formal with each other at this point.
- Sam says ‘Holy Hannah!’ when the crystal first moves, which I think is the first time we hear her say it. It crops up a lot in fanfic.
- When the real Jack is in the holding cell and talking to the camera, we see Sam smiling at his antics
- Teal’c wants to take his staff weapon with him when they go to the hospital, based on his TV viewing, but Hammond gently takes the staff weapon away from Teal’c and gives him a baseball cap to wear 😀
- In the hospital, SG1 have torches just like the torches Mulder and Scully used to use in The X Files - very bright beams that illuminate nothing 😀
I still can’t decide if I liked the episode. Onto episode 8 next - The Nox.

This is not my favorite episode, but these are pretty pics of the team together.
One thing I do like from this episode is the “unauthorized use of the staff weapon” scene.

Brief Candle
I watched two episodes of Stargate last weekend, but have struggled to find the time to post about it. The first was season 1, episode 9: Brief Candle. Now updated with a screenshot of shirtless Jack 😀
SG1 travel to the planet Argos, arriving in the temple to Pelops that holds the stargate, and the first thing they do (well, mainly Daniel who has some experience) is help deliver a baby. There’s a celebration, Jack gets given a special cake by a woman called Kynthia, is clearly drugged, sleeps with her, and then all the villagers and Jack fall into a very deep sleep as the day ends. Here is a very dimly lit image of shirtless Jack before he also passes out.
They’re all fine the next morning except that the baby is now a toddler… Eventually SG1 discover that the Argosians only live short lives due to the nanites in their blood, and Jack has been infected. Pelops was experimenting on the Argosians and shortened their lifespans to see what the human host would evolve into.
Jack stays behind on Argos to avoid infecting anyone else, and eventually realises (after encouraging the Argosians to rebel against Pelops and pull down the statue) that there was a transmitter in the statue than was controlling the nanites (including making them fall deeply asleep each evening). Without the transmitter, they will have normal lifespans, and Jack will return to his actual age as the nanites only mimicked the signs of aging.
Further Thoughts
Sadly I haven’t been able to find a decent screenshot of Jack wrapped in a sheet after waking up with Kynthia 😀
A few interesting things in this one - it’s the first time we’ve seen the Stargate in a temple that’s still in use; we find out that Daniel has delivered a baby before (after the guys all turn to Sam and she says she doesn’t know what to do!); and when the nanites start evolving Hammond is very quick to stop the research, destroy the samples, and refuse to return to Argos (having learned from the Broca Divide).
Teal’c and Daniel translate the inscriptions on the statue together, which I think is the first time we see this happen, and Daniel says the ‘obscure Goa’uld dialect’ is Linear A script, which seems hugely significant from a linguistics point of view! Is this ever mentioned again?
On a practical note: if they are not allowed to leave the village, which doesn’t seem that large, does that mean that the Argosians are all inter-related by now? Why haven’t they become over-crowded in the limited space (though perhaps the nanites control fertility)? How do they produce enough food to feed themselves? Do they ever build boats to explore the sea?
I feel that this episode (plus the mention of Carter’s actions on P3X-595) probably started the ‘eating alien food and losing inhibitions’ fanfic trope and influenced the ‘accidentally married off-world’ trope.
It’s also interesting, having come back to Stargate mainly via fanfic at first, to see that things I found cliched in fic (Teal’c helping Daniel translate) are actually canon and I’d just forgotten that.

we're also, while i still have the brain cell for it, following up by talking about her corner of beastly nature!
it's important to understand that she's a human. depending on universe, the essence of her changes a little bit, whether bent and fixed by the lazarus pit or as a force sensitive in star wars, she's still unquestionably, unequivocally, a human.
she's also pretty fucking weird for a human. mildly off-putting in her natural habitat, quiet and cryptid and always watching you from the corner of her eye. easy to fade into the background for a woman so acquainted with being the center of attention.
on the other hand, this also means she's much more ruthless than any other bat. equally less fair if it comes to it. the outcome of crossing a predator, however docile she normally is, is never, ever pretty. the fangs she bears every time she smiles aren't for show.
she'd like to think everybody knows better than to try.
#there's also the whole how the lazarus pit makes her powers into slightly eldritch horror kinda bs#but that's a post for another day when i can find the words#in general i just wanna say there IS a reason why she makes for such an incredible assassin#and it's just. by nature she's very cold. wild beast with all the fangs and no barks. and then she gets tamed by people around her#BUT ALSO IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW SHE DOES SO WILLINGLY#because she WANTS to for her own good and for the good of those she loves. there's no real 'taming' of a beast unless she herself allows it#she's also the most docile cat-adjacent woman 99% of the time so it's hard to relate her to something feral. but she is. better watch out!#❮❮ * lilith ate the bones of her own enemies. (headcanon.)#these tags are an essay. sheesh

i’m curious how fic ideas come to other people because they usually come to me in still images that i have to then build a plot around. i think my brain was built for me to be an artist and i said no fuck you and became a writer instead
#for example theres this one dpxdc one that i havent written anything down for#but the associated image is a feral danny with a techy dog collar on#and the collar has like . vials of lazarus water that it’s pumping into him so that associated villain can control him#or for another dp fic idea it started out as just this single comic panel type scene#where they’re in class & sam is like ‘psst phantom! hey phantom!’ and danny looks at her quizzically#and then his eyes flash green and his expression flattens and he says ‘what do you want?’#and i wake up in like cold sweats with these single images#and then spend hours in a master doc creating a plot for them#and then i write like the single scene associated with the image and then never touch the idea again#it’s a problem#tayscreams#fanfiction

Welcome to the Livastia Universe, meet the muses!
Kelly Segal
A war veteran and an equal rights activist in his youth, a multi-linguist, a husband, a woodworker, a doctor of many fields for both the living and mechanical, this guy is probably one of the most interesting MAI alive. His eagerness to try new things and his generally soft-spoken nature make him quite easy to approach.
Aristophanes Freling
It's hard to best whatever Kelly has going on, but Ari is on pretty equal footing. With a ID of TG1-0001-0, he was the first Livastian Military AI ever produced. He left the war as a Major General, got arrested a few times for his activism alingside his wife, and in the present day works as a prosthetics engineer for both humans and LAI. Might be a little tired of it all, but he knows what he's about.
Lazarus Sasaki
Another pioneer of his clade, Lazarus was the first X-Class intelligence ever made, and operates as the head representative of the Livastian Alliance. Kelly and Ari were activists, and Lazarus was the one to heed their calls and orchestrate drastic change among all reaches of the alliance and the world beyond. Being an X-Class Intelligence, it also means that this guy is vastly larger and more advanced than most, with his walking body being little more than a puppet to interface with people.
Paris Amspoker
Youngest of the bunch is Paris, a spry little guy 17 years of age taking up an art conservator's apprenticeship in France. This is a little funny; having a French name despite having been raised in the Northeastern US. To put it frankly... he's a little stuck up. Not in an asshole kind of way, but Nothing bad happens to him Ever, and he absolutely revels in it.
There's plenty more characters that have the possibility of showing up for interactions and questions on this blog, but these four are the primary figureheads! If you're familiar with the world and want to ask questions to other characters, you're more than welcome to.

Controversial conspiracy theory
Princess Alex is told 'no your husband can't play Glastonbury, it's too high profile and your fake girlfriend is going to be side-stage, it'll be too weird'
Princess throws a strop, even though the powers that be have agreed for his husband to appear at the last London show.
Princess is a heavy smoker, and like most smokers, he gets sore throats. Princess thinks he can use this to his advantage. 'ooh we can say I have acute laryingitis so I can't do the Dublin gig, maybe I can get them to agree for us to do four smaller gigs in Dublin and Belfast, then hubby can join me and we can go home together afterwards'
Princess gets his own way and lo and behold, even though most people take at least a fortnight to get their voices back after laryingitis, the Princess goes on stage at Glastonbury that Friday with a perfectly recovered voice.
