Coimbatore is the Hindutva laboratory of Tamil Nadu and stronghold of the Hindu Munnani. Coimbatore topped the Kongu region with 42 incidents of hate crimes, according to the UCF report. While the city has traditionally seen extreme communal violence between Hindus and Muslims, anti-Christian violence is a relatively new phenomenon in Coimbatore. And the Munnani is at the forefront of this campaign. The Munnani has one person designated to keep a watch on the Christian community in every neighbourhood of the city, said the organisation’s Coimbatore South district secretary, Govindraj Natarajan. “We have designated Hindu Munnani members in all the 100 wards in Coimbatore. We immediately get to know when a non-Hindu takes residence in any ward in the city. We know if they are involved in conversion or just leading normal lives.” The police, who are aware of these ward-level watchers, say that they are highly trained. “You will rarely see them in the forefront when violence breaks out. They are not in it to become leaders of agitations. Their role is to work quietly in the community and provoke violence rather than participate in it,” said the senior police officer in Coimbatore.

Tihar inmate, 2 associates held for extorting Rs 50 crore | Delhi News - Net4News
NEW DELHI: Police have arrested high-profile conman and Tihar Jail inmate Sukesh Chandrasekhar and at least two of his associates outside on charges of extorting a staggering Rs 50 crore from a top business family of the country. This is the biggest sum extorted from within a jail in Delhi, showing the ease with which prison inmates are keeping their business alive.
Sukesh, a source said, contacted the victim’s family, informing them about a criminal investigation about to be initiated against them and promised help in lieu of money. At first, Chandrasekhar allegedly claimed contacts in high places, which is his usual modus operandi, and then spoke to the victims posing as a top government official. He later claimed the expenses allegedly incurred by him and coerced the victims to pay. Conman used names of top CBI officials His associates collected the money on his behalf at an undisclosed location. Chandrasekhar has been booked for extortion, cheating and impersonation and is being interrogated about the conspiracy. An FIR was registered in this connection in the last week of July. Sources said there could be more than one victim and the cops are questioning him about this. A phone, which he was using in the jail, has sent for forensic analysis. He was recently shifted from Tihar to Rohini jail because of this. Chandrasekhar had been earlier arrested for allegedly taking money from TTV Dhinakaran to bribe Election Commission officials to get AIADMK’s two-leaves symbol for the Sasikala faction. At that time, he was trying to strike a Rs 50-crore deal by claiming to have contacts in the EC. While the sum involved at that time was assumed to be at least Rs 10 crore, crime branch cops had seized Rs 1.3 crore in cash from his hotel room in Delhi during a raid in 2017. Before that, he was arrested with his girlfriend, “Madras Cafe” actress Leena Maria Paul, on the charges of cheating businessmen while claiming to be film producers. The cops had raided a farmhouse in south Delhi and seized many luxury cars. The conman was also accused of misusing the names of top CBI officials to extort money from former TDP MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao. He had posed as a senior CBI officer and also as a senior official of the ministry of home affairs and demanded Rs 100 crore from the former MP to bail him out of the CBI case. Sambasiva Rao is facing charges of committing one of the biggest bank frauds in the country worth Rs 7,926 crore through his Transstroy (India) Ltd company and allegedly diverting funds to fictitious firms. Chandrasekhar was also charged with providing undue favours to police escort teams which had taken him to Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Mumbai for their investigation. Chandrasekhar, who is in his thirties, is no novice in the world of crime. His tryst with crime began at the age of 17 in Bengaluru. Fond of a lavish lifestyle, he duped people of several crores in Bengaluru and Chennai at an young age. A resident of Bengaluru, he would pose as a relative of politicians and cheat innocents of huge sums by promising them government jobs or properties. He would buy expensive cars with the money. His collection of cars included a Rolls-Royce. At least two dozen cases are pending against him all over the country. Source link Read the full article

Chemical castration, lynching: Lok Sabha debates amid anger over vet’s rape - india news
Perpetrators of heinous crimes against women should be castrated, surgically or chemically, or they should be executed publically like in some other countries or hanged within weeks of the incidents - these were some of the opinions voiced in the Parliament’s House of elders on Monday as MPs across party lines indicated patience was running short in the aftermath of the gory Hyderabad rape and murder case.As Rajya Sabha met for the day and the zero hour was about to commence, a demand was raised that a discussion on safety of women in the country be taken up. AAP member Sanjay Singh and some other members had given a notice for a discussion on the issue.Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said it was an important issue and sought the opinion of the leader of opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad who promptly agreed.Naidu set the tone of the discussion himself pointing out that the disgraceful and disturbing incident in Hyderabad was the latest such happening as the malaise was not confined to the city alone. He sought positive suggestions to improve the situation but the anger underlying the speeches was palpable.Azad initiated the discussion and said that the malaise could not be tackled through legislation alone and an atmosphere had to be generated in the country’s institutions including those imparting education. A wide-ranging movement which goes above partly or religious lines is the need, the Congress leader asserted.Speaking immediately after Santanu Sen of the TMC said fast track courts were needed and exemplary punishment given to the culprits. This punishments should be widely publicized for deterrence, he said.Another member K Ravindra Kumar pointed out that often there was delay by the police in registering cases of crimes against women citing jurisdiction issues. This was happening despite Supreme Court directions, he rued. The Andhra Pradesh MP said the brutal rape and murder in Hyderabad was reminiscent of the episode in Delhi in 2012 which had shaken the nation. Some of the strongest words came from DMK’s P Wilson. The courts should be empowered to order surgical or chemical castration for offences like rape and murder before such people are released from prisons into the community, the Tamil Nadu MP said.Such legislations have been adopted in countries like Korea and states of the USA like California, the MP said. Surgical and chemical castration will reduce sexual performance, sexual interest and sexual reoffending, he added. Even the cost of such procedure should be recovered from the culprits including by attaching his assets, he added.Wilson said a list of such offenders should be made public.“It is time we act to save India’s daughters,” he asserted.Similar were the feeling of SP member and actor Jaya Bachhan who said there were countless instances of similar crimes happening across the country.“My suggestion is a bit harsh, but I think these people should be brought out in public and lynched,” the MP, who has often spoken on the issue in the past as well, averred.Congress member T Subirami Reddy said those committing such crimes were not afraid of the law. Action should be taken within 15-20 days and no appeal allowed, he suggested.Another Congress leader Amee Yajnik emphasized on the need to effect changes in the society’s mindset to make the environment safer for women.Congress leader Mohammed Ali Khan said often cases linger on for years and justice takes long time. There are attempts to link such crimes with a religion which also has to be avoided, he added.BJP leader R K Sinha said even in the Delhi gangrape and murder case the accused had not been awarded the final punishement given the system of appeals. A Nirbhaya fund was created and many states are not able to utilise it, he added.BSP leader Veer Singh said often such crimes when perpetrated against women belonging to the weaker sections are not even highlighted. SAD leader Naresh Gujaral pointed out that while effective justice system was needed, the judiciary was functioning with upto 40 % vacancies.Binoy Viswam joined the long list of enraged parliamentarians demanding capital punishment in case of such crimes even though he was opposed to this form of punishment. Women be it a girl of four years or a grandmother of 80, are not safe, he lamented.Other MPs talked of need to check related crimes like illicit drug trade and pornography. Others wondered where cultural and moral value were as crimes continue to take place in various parts including Coimbatore, Kollachi to Kathua and Delhi.BJP Member Ashwani Vaishnaw said the laws were archaic and probability of conviction low. Senior BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav said there was need to act collectively and bring change in a time-bound manner. Some of the most telling comments were made by Chairman Naidu as he concluded the discussion.“Merely making laws is not enough, we are seeing what is happening after conviction. There is a system of a series of appeals…Can anybody think of having mercy on such people? And why,” Naidu questioned.Fast track courts are one thing, but what happens when the verdict has been given, he said. The vice president also questioned leniency shown to juvenile offenders in case of gory sexual crimes.“Those who can commit heinous crimes, what do they have to do with age?,” Naidu questioned. In his characteristic style, Naidu said there was need for political will, administrative skill before the nation goes for the kill of this social evil.We have Aadhaar cards and identity cards, such fellows should be identified and a social stigma attached to these crimes, he said giving vent to the larger painful concern. Cameras in a particular area ensure a certain amount of safety and CCTV dealers are the ones we approach when in need of them. Many perceive these security measures are installed only in office set ups establishments, but they are available also for supermarkets, boutiques and residential spaces. Indian kitchens join the fight against Coronavirus

Indian kitchens join the fight against Coronavirus
After the countrywide lockdown was announced, the senior general manager of Regency Madurai by GRT Hotels, N Mohammed Sheriff, was talking to friends in the police about the repercussions and that is when the idea of providing food to police personnel came up. The request came from the SP (Madurai district), N Manivannan. And spontaneously, the Madurai team, from among all GRT hotels across the State, led the way in extending its corporate social responsibility.
Soon, Grand Chennai by GRT Hotels, Regency Sameera Vellore and Zibe Coimbatore by GRT Hotels followed suit, distributing food packets in their respective cities, either among police and corporation staff, sanitation workers or the homeless. Grand Chennai is also giving lunch to about 300 doctors at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital everyday. “The doctors requested high-energy food, so we are making vegetable biryani for them, as well as kurma,” says Vikram Cotah, chief operating officer, GRT Hotels and Resorts. The GRT group is not alone: The Gateway Hotel in Madurai is also set to render services in a day or two, according to general manager Siddharth Jain. The Taj Group of hotels has been providing food packets to key hospitals and COVID-19 centres in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
The meals, in the Taj Group’s case, are being prepared and delivered by its airline catering wing TajSATS. “We have partnered with Chef Sanjeev Kapoor for Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi. In Mumbai, we are working closely with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to offer approximately 8,000 meals a day to medical fraternity at the Kasturba Hospital, the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital, Nair Hospital and JJ Hospital. We are also distributing meals to medical staff in Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, in partnership with the Taj West End. As of March 30, we have started serving meals at Lady Hardinge Hospital in New Delhi,” informed a spokesperson of The Indian Hotels Company Limited, a subsidiary of the Taj Group, via email.
Raising the bar
Renowned chef Daniel Humm recently took to Instagram to announce that he would be turning Eleven Madison Park, an iconic fine-dining restaurant, into a commissary kitchen in an effort to help New Yorkers in light of the Coronavirus outbreak. “We are all speechless. I encourage everyone to look into opportunities to help each other,” posted Humm.
For the uninitiated, Eleven Madison Park was voted as The World’s Best Restaurant in 2017. Partnering with Rethink Food, a non-profit organisation based in New York, the restaurant will now prepare meals for workers and the underprivileged section of New York. It must be noted that Eleven Madison Park was shut on March 21, in the wake of the pandemic.
The numbers being handled by the trimmed-down staff of these hotels are staggering: the Taj Group has delivered over 46,000 meals to medical staff in Mumbai since the launch of the initiative on March 23. Currently, they are offering around 8,000 meals per day to the medical staff in Mumbai, whereas in New Delhi they are offering 200 meals a day to the staff at the Lady Hardinge Hospital. In Bengaluru, Taj West End is serving approximately 250 meals a day for the staff at Victoria Hospital. Besides these, the group has also provided over 10,000 packets of lunch and dinner to migrant workers in different cities.
It isn’t just the big chains: smaller food businesses are also doing what they can. Coal Barbecues in Chennai’s T Nagar area, for instance, has been handing out free lunch packets to anyone who wants one, no questions asked. ECO Kitchen, an initiative of the Chennai-based YR Gaitonde Foundation, has been preparing over 5,000 meals every single day, according to YRG’s chief programme officer AK Ganesh.
He, however, wants to emphasise that credit should be going to “the donors, and to organisations who are doing the heavy lifting, serving this food to hospitals across the city daily. We only make the food.” Those doing the distribution include organisations like Viswajayam Foundation that is doing this work in Government Hospital, Royapettah, and Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Institute of Child Health, Egmore. The Sai Trust is giving out food at Madras Medical College, among others. The International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care (PCVC) is doing this at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, where they run an acid attack victims’ ward.”
It isn’t just for medical personnel, but also for the underprivileged. Rajasthan Youth Association is connected to the Chennai Corporation, and Jeth Nagar Residents Association in supporting “hundreds of poor people, and is distributing via the police force,” he adds.
Needs and nuances
Some of the hospitals receive ECO Kitchen’s meals as breakfast and lunch packets, while others receive breakfast and dinner, and so on. The food, says Ganesh, is made everyday at ECO Kitchen’s kitchen, which is run by the UK-based organisation Compass. “They add some nuances,” he says, “Like making carrot poriyal more substantial with channa, soyabean or paneer. Basically, the idea is to offer energy-dense and carbohydrate-heavy foods that are also comforting: rice, dal, chapatis, khichdi… Food that is easy to make and quick to distribute.”
For GRT Hotels’ Sheriff, it took a day to streamline the process, and the hotel has been regularly providing lunch and dinner to 150 policemen, who round-the-clock are patrolling the roads, to check on people violating the restrictions imposed by the Government to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Lunch is readied by noon and dinner by 7 pm. The police vehicle picks up the food for distribution among its staff. “Our chefs have drawn up a menu with a variety rice and a curry for each meal every day. This includes bisi bela bhaat, lemon/curd/tomato/tamarind rice, vegetable/peas and chicken/egg biryani. The food is packed in aluminium foil boxes and sent across with water bottles twice daily,” says Sheriff.
Additionally, 50 more lunch and dinner packets are also distributed daily among the homeless in the city, he adds. Most of the group’s resorts and hotels have closed down, except for a few city hotels with long-paying guests.
At Regency Madurai, ever since the last guest vacated, 10 core teams, with a member drawn from each department, have been formed. There are 12 people, including two chefs in each team, who have been put on a week’s duty and they all stay in the hotel, running the kitchen, cleaning and sanitising the premises. The 10 teams will work on rotation. “This way we are trying to make sure that our 120-strong staff is not stressed out, gets to spend enough time at home and also stays in safe zones,” says Sheriff.
The free food distribution will continue till the lockdown is lifted. “During trying times, kindness is needed more than ever,” he says.
