I just saw your post about a fanfic writer you posted in 2019. I have to ask, you still keeping up with Coeur Al’aran and their work?

I haven’t not. Unfortunately, I haven't read much fanfiction like I used to. Especially not Coeur Al'aran. His works are amazing don't get me wrong, but they are also essentially novels in of themselves. I just have so many things I want to do nowadays and fanfics don't really capture my attention like they used to.

Also, a long pattern for months where lot of stories I WOULD get into just weren’t finished or stopped getting updated also sort of killed my excitement for fanfiction since I would just get sad that the stories I was enjoying weren't being continued.

Fanfiction Review: Relic of the Future

A completed Jaune centric RWBY work by the ever prolific RWBY fanfic author Coeur Al Aran, Relic of the Future is probably one of his best works. At 1.1 million words, it’s also his longest. The story follows Jaune Arc, sole survivor part of the final attack on Salem. His friends and family dead, he’s lamenting his fate, when the dying Salem offers him a chance to go back in time and try and fix it. He gets a second chance to stop her with less casualties, and she gets a second chance to win. Stricken with grief, Jaune accepts, and gets sent back. Unfortunately, he gets sent back much further than he anticipated, a good decade before the start of canon. Undeterred, he sets out to fix things with his knowledge of the future, save his friends, and ultimately defeat Salem. The characterisation in this one, always one of Coeur’s strong suits, is fully on display here. Everyone depicted here develops both realistically and in interesting ways over the course of the story, leading to unique twists and changes to canon. What’s more, is that the plot and pacing are very good, building up to a solid ending, normally one of Coeur’s weaker traits. The dialogue is great, with most characters having a distinct voice, keeping both tone and wording expected of them. It also avoids one of the major pitfalls of such works, in that Jaune does not become some super powerful badass. Jaune is strong, yes, and grows stronger over the course of the narrative. But much of that is due to experience, and the fact that he fights smarter, not harder, along with taking a very pragmatic approach to combat. There’s no such thing as a fair fight when you’re fighting for your life, after all.

With regards to the weaker aspects, there are a few dropped plot threads, something expected of such a long work, and somewhat endemic to Coeur’s longer narratives. Speaking of, the length is something some people will also find a little daunting, though in my opinion, I find it more of a bonus than a detriment. There is also the fact that the rest of the RWBY mainstays, including the majority of the main cast, have very little time in the spotlight, which might aggravate some readers. All in all, it’s an outstandingly good piece, well worth the time investment. It’s the kind of work that you’ll come to enjoy the characters like old friends, feeling like you’re losing them when the story finally ends. If you like Peggy Sue fics, Jaune as the main character, and years long narratives, or at the very least, have nothing against them, I would definitely recommend this.

Fuck it, I'm biting-

It absolutely is.

First off, the idea that ANYONE would want to be Jaune is ridculous. Read a Jaune-centric harem fanfic or one with Jaune as the main focus. Because 99 times out of 100- Jaune is a different character altogether. There's a reason why Coeur Al Aran basically has to rewrite Jaune everytime he uses him- Cuz Jaune FUNDAMENTALLY is not a character anyone would want to be.

He spends Volumes 1-3 being an absolute joke, being the target of 99% of the slapstick humor and a running joke about how much Jaune sucks. He spends Volumes 4-6 basically being as sidelined as possible, to the point he may have been partially REPLACED. And Volume 7-8: Oh lordy, Jaune can basically be shoved into the background until it's time to stab Penny and lose NOTHING.

Does THIS sound like a self insert to you?

And before you try bringing up Jaune's relevancy in Volumes 1-3: Let's talk about Jaune's relevancy POST Volume 3. You know, when Miles would have more influence on the writing staff?

Volume 4- Decent amount of focus, exploring his feelings about Pyrrha's passing, gets focus with his armor being replaced-Aaaand he just made it all about Ruby. Yeah, that scene of Jaune talking about losing Pyrrha to Ruby in Kuroyuri? How it references Jaune's loss and then makes it about how awesome and inspiring Ruby is?

Doesn't seem like a self insert thing huh?

Between Volumes 5 and 6, Jaune has a grand total of 5 noteworthy moments (Jaune attacking Cinder, Cinder humilating Jaune, Jaune healing Weiss, Jaune being aggressive with Oscar and Jaune's scene with Pyrrha's statue). Reminder that this is about the same amount of focus that Yang got in Volume 4. A character everyone screeched and gnashed their teeth about for being 'sidelined'...and Jaune gets roughly the same amount spread across TWO Volumes and somehow he's stealing spotlight?

Same shit with Volume 7 and 8. Here's a problem- What is Jaune's view on the Ironwood situation? We know Ruby, Weis, Blake, Yang, Nora, Ren, Oscar, Qrow, James, Winter, Penny and even fucking MAY MARIGOLD'S stances on the question, either through repeated moments, conflict or big dialogues.

Jaune, the character who started as a foil to RUBY who is the other big player in that conversation?

Jaune: Well, if it wasn't for the embargo making everybody so mad, people probably wouldn't be so quick to blame you for everything else.

This is the closest we get. This is all Jaune gets to say about the whole situation, which is BARELY about this. Reminder that Jaune started as a foil to Ruby in Volume 1. He is up there with Yang and Oscar in 'characters connected to Ruby' and they're also characters who act as major foils to Ruby's actions and stances. Jaune meanwhile is treated like a background character. Once again- could shove in the background until he stabs Penny and it wouldn't change a damn thing. In a very Ruby-centric part of the story.

People love to say that Jaune is given these big moments and thus it means he MUST be a self insert! Well, let's compare shall we? Let's go ahead and take a character we KNOW the creators love and kind of project onto and compare to Jaune-

Randy Marsh from latter seasons of South Park.

Does Randy do nothing for the whole season before getting one big moment or having a few moments spread out over multiple seasons?

Nope, Randy completely takes over the show, often acting as the protagonist of the episodes or even seasons to the point of dominating the fucking opening for a time. Because that's what a self-insert/Mary Sue/creator's favorite actually does in a show. Not THIS bullshit.

Jaune is not favored by the writers. In fact, by Volume 8, he seemed more like he was hated by the writers (well, probably one writer in particular...). Even in this case given- Jaune was given the second episode. Not the launch episode, not the penultimate episode. Not the fucking finale which could be what RWBY goes out on. No, he's given the episode that would be the easiest to forget.

At this point, people who bitch about Jaune give him more time and focus than the writers do. Because even in Volume 9, Jaune was still secondary to Ruby. And yet they huffed paint thinner until they deluded themselves into thinking Jaune was the focus.

They don't WANT Jaune to be forgotten or pushed aside. They want Jaune front and center so they can excuse acting like dipshits towards Miles because he's the weak link on the writing staff.

P.S. Gotta love the 'white boy' part. Implying that Jaune would be better if he was a different skin color. ... Also implying OP and everyone agreeing with them is fucking RACIST.

What is your opinion on Coeur al aran fics, which seem to be one of the biggest contributor's of writing in the rwby fandom, thanks to his constant output of stories

To be honest I haven’t heard of them or read any of their Fics. What platform are they on? I tried checking them out on AO3 but could only find one colab fic where their name was written in the description. Honestly for myself I only really read IronQrow fics as I get to annoyed with the mains when I think about V8 nonsense. Maybe I’ll eventually get to a point where I can read other stuff without getting annoyed lolz. I’m not annoyed with the authors I should clarify the characters just annoy me regardless of what the author has them do if that makes sense. But more importantly regardless of how I personally feel about a particular author, I wouldn’t feel right telling people if I don’t like them if that makes sense? Fanfic authors create fics for people to enjoy for free and even when it’s a personal dislike of the genre or type of fic I know it can be extremely disheartening to see people saying your work is bad you know? People have a right to express themselves how they wish and to write what they wish and some random person on a website shouldn’t be able to say what a person can or cannot create, I may not like something and I won’t recommend stuff I don’t like but I also won’t slam someone for something I don’t like. Am I making any sense? I know I’m tired and rambling lolz.

How would you rank Jaune pairings with the members of team RWBY.

Alright not that hard question.Lancaster is my RWBY OTP so yeah Ruby is number one. Hands down I love my dorks and I want them to live happy lives in each other’s arms (sue me I’m sappy)Knightshade is an interesting one while it will no way happen in canon it is a crackship I like. Not only do I feel their personalities could have meshed well for good chemistry. I also am a huge fan of Coeur Al’ Aran’s fanfics many of which are knightshade and they are really good.Dragonslayer is one I like but I feel jilted on. The two together would be fun with teasing and lame flirting and that. What makes me depressed is there was a missed moment in Vol 5 that could have made this a legitimate contender for happening. If instead of Weiss going to see Yang after she got angry about Blake it could have been Jaune. Jaune has perspective on her situation there could have been good opportunity there to get insight on both of there emotions. I dunno maybe I’m the only one who thinks that would be a good character moment.WhiteKnight it’s fine. Honestly I don’t route for it and I fear for if it happens because these are the two people I ship Ruby with and I have an antiship for her so these two getting together would worry me on that front. But like I said I don’t hate it by any means and as I’ve done in my smut Weiss deserves someone who can make her happy, and Jaune is a guy who does what he can to make people happy.

A proper intro from me to you...

Hi there~! If you’re reading this, then you have have most definitely found yourself in this little page dedicated to the bullshite a manage to crank out in a semi-regular basis! My name is TumbleWeird (last name: circa2018 after realizing that there are half a hundred people who came up with that brilliant name) and welcome to TumbleWeirdPages! A space dedicated to the weird fetishes I actually manage to write with minimal shame!

And actual stories, yeah. I have those, too.

Writer Goals: As much as I would like to free myself of any expectations (took a page from Filthy Frank’s high school survival guide on that one) and all the weight it has with it. But then, I realized that being static for all eternity is just plain annoying. Therefore, I gave myself some ‘simple’ (he said, not sarcastically, scout’s honor) goals based on what I hate about my works.

#1. Know how to use punctuations

A big problem that I see in everything I do is the improper use of punctuation. The first drafts of my works are littered with more than a dozen semi-colons after hearing about it in JelloPocalypse’s  ‘Welecome to Fanfiction!’. Sadly, I suck and therefore used it in exactly the wrong way discussed. The goal is to use different symbols, dancing around each one in a way that isn’t tiring.

#2. Increase vocubu-library

Seeing the same words over an over gets annoying after some time. That’s it. I want to learn new words so that I wouldn’t burst a vein after reading my own works.

#3. Dance around words like two Capoeira masters in a mock battle

One of the the most bitter pills to swallow has to be a good story with a good plot and good punctuation and word-choices lost to the world because of failure to dance the ‘dance’. You know, that dance. The one where you find a harmony between detailed descriptions, exposition and long stretches of character conversation? That dance!

#4. Apply the stuff I love

I love history. I love the idea that people are not inherently bad for no fucking reason all the time. I love porn. I love kinky shite. I love fluff and feels. I love magic (to some degree) and I love subverting tropes. Whatever I try to write must honor some if not all of the things I love.

#5. Actually write fanfiction

Fanfiction is the ultimate culmination of a fan’s skills and dedication to their fandom. It requires not just mad skills in writing, but a keen eye and understanding of the characters they want to write about. I have none of those. Therefore, my ultimate writer’s dream is to be somewhere near College Fool’s (One of the greatest Jaune Arc writers ever, right up their with Coeur Al Aran -- praise be) and their wonderful un-orthodox writing style that may very well be classified as fine art.

So... yeah. That’s my schtick. If you happen to be neutral or supportive if my endeavors, than thanks! If not and you think I’m a stuck up sumbitch whose way in over his head, well -- I wrote this entire thing for myself as a reminder! Yeah, let’s go with that! Coeur Al Aran is only on Fanfiction.net and actually teaches writing. He (last I checked his profile indicated he/him pronouns) writes with two characters as the stars almost all the time: Jaune and Blake. He utilizes Jaune because Jaune is the “blank slate” character as he puts it and he finds Blake’s Beacon characterization interesting to work with. So yeah, if you don’t like Jaune his fics aren’t for you. I think he might have an Adam fic though, but it’s been a while since I’ve looked and his work has never interested me personally. Plus, they’re all seriously long fics, so if you’re a fic binge-er, I’d pick a day you know you don’t have anything planned if you want to check it out.

Like I said when I mentioned her in the Mercy story I did where she was mentioned I have no plans on using her at the current time. She is the property of Coeur and @exvnir As such I don’t think I’ll ever use her. Unless by the impossible situation where exvnir contacts me and says you can use her.
