It was the literary scandal of the decade, the ultimate betrayal and, it turned out, the end of Truman Capote’s career. Published in Esquire in November 1975, “La Côte Basque 1965”, an excerpt from Capote’s then-forthcoming novel Answered Prayers, saw the celebrated writer share the innermost secrets (and most scandalous gossip) entrusted to him by his beloved Swans, the wealthy and glamorous group of high-society women that included Babe Paley, Slim Keith, Gloria Guinness, Lee Radziwill, Marella Agnelli and CZ Guest.
Visceral in its revelations of substance abuse, sexual assault, a murder cover-up, a graphic description of extra-marital period sex and, to top it off, bestiality, the article was a sensation for all the wrong reasons. It saw Capote deserted by his closest friends and shunned from the New York clique he had yearned to be a part of growing up – and, against the odds, had managed to infiltrate as an adult thanks to the success of his novels In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Capote’s questionable actions (and the irresistible drama they precipitated) form the backbone of Ryan Murphy’s long-awaited Feud, inspired by Laurence Leamer’s bestselling 2021 book, Capote’s Women. An all-star cast will bring the man and his muses back to life when the Gus Van Sant-directed series premieres this month on FX in the US, but what was the real-life fallout from the publication of “La Côte Basque 1965” like for Capote and co?
“He never recovered from it,” says Ebs Burnough, director of the 2021 documentary The Capote Tapes, a five-year discovery project that saw him uncover hours of audio footage of Capote, and which gives the most thorough insight into the flawed figure to date. “[These were] friendships born and nurtured over 20-something years. All of a sudden, not one but all of his friends – who had been like his family, because he didn’t really have any family – were not speaking to him; there was literally nowhere for him to go. He was alone drinking, and the phone stopped ringing. He was a man alone on an island.”
Described by the New York Times as “the high-society temple of French cuisine”, La Côte Basque – just off Fifth Avenue and a stone’s throw from The Plaza – was a fine-dining eatery as famous for its juicy gossip as it was for its succulent Coeur de Filet Périgourdine. No one, however, dared to write about what was said and done there – until Capote. While his ostracising may seem like an obvious consequence for spilling society’s sordid secrets, Capote was flawed by the outrage.
Before publication, he boasted to People that he was planning on assassinating his characters with a pen instead of a gun: “There’s the handle, the trigger, the barrel, and, finally, the bullet. And when that bullet is fired from the gun, it’s going to come out with a speed and power like you’ve never seen – wham!”
Success was, in his head, assured, as Capote had been open about writing “La Côte Basque 1965”, bragging about the stories he would tell, continues Burnough. “He was working on that piece for over 20 years, so in his mind he didn’t anticipate the fall out because all of them knew he was working on it.” Upon the outrage, Capote was, “totally abandoned but also indignant”, he continues. “He even said, ‘Hey! What did they expect from me? I’m a writer!’”
Capote had form. “Remember, this was something he had done with Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” explains Burnough. “When you think about it, Holly Golightly is essentially a call girl, yet with Audrey Hepburn [playing her], and because it was so beautifully written, lots of New York socialites were saying, ‘Holly was based on me!’ There’s [even] a quote in The Capote Tapes where Babe’s daughter [Kate] says, ‘Mummy was so excited to be immortalised by such a famous author.’ So, I think he was certainly expecting great praise.”
Babe Paley was Capote’s most aggrieved victim of “La Côte Basque 1965”. In it, Slim Keith’s alias, Lady Ina Coolbirth, reveals to the fictionalised version of Capote, PB Jones, the story that Paley is said to have told Capote about catching her husband, CBS head Bill, in bed with another woman. When Capote rang the Paley household to see what they thought of “La Côte Basque”, Bill is said to have lied, claiming that it was thrown out before either of them could read it; a distraught Babe, who had read it, and who considered Capote her closest confidante, had terminal lung cancer at the time of its publication and never spoke to Capote again before her death in 1978.
Such dismissal of his work would have affected Capote, says Burnough, but the fallout from the Swans leaving him would have been even worse. “Babe Paley was his North Star. She was everything he aspired to be and everything his mother aspired to be. [His mother] had always wanted to be a socialite, so his obsession came from her wanting but not being a part of that world, and then abandoning him as a child. There’s a lot of mother psychology there.”
It makes total sense that Babe Paley was the victim of Capote’s worst betrayal, says Lisa Pomerantz, the New York-based brand expert with a lifelong obsession with Capote and his era of social commentators. “She was the one that opened up the most to him. He took total advantage of her because the others – Lee Radziwill, CZ Guest [et al] – were always more guarded,” she says. “The question is, did he do it knowingly? He was a tortured soul, mostly because of his relationship with his mother – that combined with his natural obsession with this aspirational life and Babe and Bill being the epitome of it.”
Having been sent from New Orleans to Alabama to be raised by relatives after his parents’ divorce, Capote is said to have been a lonely, introverted child searching for a sense of belonging. So why, having infiltrated the glitzy New York scene as a bonafide player, did he blow it all up?
In tandem with craving acceptance, psychologist Carolyn Mair muses that, deep down, Capote resented the world he had managed to become a part of. “People warmed to him and wanted to protect him as he projected an identity of both child and woman, yet his wit could be razor sharp. His ability to remember conversations verbatim made him a good source of gossip,” she says. “Yet as his psychological problems worsened, it seems reasonable to assume that his judgement also worsened.” Shocking others, she adds, “can also be a way of getting attention”.
The backlash from other circles would also have been keenly felt by Capote, continues Mair. “The Swans were the high society who lived aspirational lives and were the envy of women across the States and elsewhere,” she says. “Ordinary people would have read about these women and their lifestyles in the press and fashion magazines and would relate to them as if they were also their friends. The publication of ‘La Côte Basque 1965’ would likely have triggered a shocked sense of betrayal amongst the readers of popular and fashion press at the time.”
Perhaps the most interesting upshot of the “La Côte Basque 1965” scandal, though? The ways in which it laid the groundwork for tabloid culture, says Burnough. “This was an era [in America] when no one even talked about the fact that Franklin Roosevelt was in a wheelchair, let alone the affairs people were having, let alone as graphically as Truman did. As the late, great John Richardson said, ‘[Capote] took the lid off a pile of shit’ and it started the exposé culture we have today. It was a real ‘gotcha!’ moment for the rich and famous.”

Written for @roguegambitweek, Day 5: First Child.
I started writing ‘At the Seams’ for Rogue/Gambit Week 2021. As I pondered what to do for R/G Week 2023, I decided it was the perfect time to continue working on Chapter Two. I didn’t quite manage to finish this chapter, but still wanted to share with y’all. This chapter focuses on Rogue, Remy, and their first child, Irene. Enjoy this excerpt.
At the Seams - Chapter 2: Irene by DayenuRose
“….Now, get your sexy Cajun ass over here, so Ah can give ya a kiss.”
“Yes’m,” he crawled up the bed to his wife’s side and snuggled at her side.
Rogue leaned over and kissed him as promised.
“You take my breath away, mamour.” As he pulled away, his gaze fell onto Irene. “Both of you.”
As Irene finished her mid-night meal, Remy reached for the cloth on his nightstand. Taking his daughter from his wife, he settled Irene against his shoulder. “Come here Immy. Come to Papa,” he crooned.
Rogue smiled. “Are ya really gonna call her that?”
“Oui,” he pressed a kiss to the top of their daughter’s head. “I like it.”
“Well, I know better than to try and talk ya out of a nickname once you’ve made your mind up about it. Just ask Stormy. But, tell me,” Rogue snuggled up against Remy’s side and closed her eyes, exhaustion catching back up to her, “how do you get Immy from Irene?”
“Ah, ma belle femme, the answer is simplicity itself. It doesn’t come from Irene—at least Irene alone.”
“All right swamp rat, Ah’m too tired to play guessin’ games. So why don’t ya just tell me.” She yawned, proving her point.
“Well, this little petite, her name is Irene Mattie. Which means her initials are I- M-. Put them together, add a y, and you get Immy. Isn’t that right ma précieuse fille?” He added the last bit directly to their daughter in a soft, crooning murmur.
“And adding a y was necessary?” Rogue poke the ticklish spot along his side. He twisted, pressing his side against the propped up pillows and making it harder for her to continue her attack, all the while keeping Immy undisturbed by their antics.
“D’accord Roguey.” He kissed her temple where her hair changed from white to cinnamon, then pressed a kiss to Immy’s head where her hair changed colors in the same fashion. In the company of his wife and daughter, he could not imagine being happier or more content.
“Looks like she’s asleep sug. Ya want me lay her down?”
“Non. I got it, mon coeur. You get comfortable and I’ll join you once she’s down.”
“Thanks Rems.” Rogue yawned again and snuggled under the blankets.
Yes, Remy thought as he watched them sleep. I am the luckiest homme in the world.
Thanks for reading. The rest of the chapter will be out soon. I appreciate all your encouragement and support. <3 <3 <3

Good Things In 2022
“It’s that time of year again! Time to remember all the good things that happened in 2022. I’ve done this since 2017, and highly recommend doing this as a fun way to reflect (and to have something for future reference when you are feeling Down.)
feels like I literally just did this for 2021, and yet.
just under the wire...
PERSONAL
I MOVED ACROSS THE WORLD!!!!! I am now living in Dublin, Ireland. it was a move I'd been aiming to do for years, and once I received my citizenship and Irish passport, I decided to give it a shot. I've been here for nine months and am having a wonderful time.
I did more traveling this year than I think I ever have in a single calendar year.
In Ireland, I've visited several counties and lots of Dublin, including: Malahide, Howth, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin Mountains, Glasnevin Cemetery, Little Museum of Dublin, GPO Museum, National Gallery of Ireland, National Museum(s) of Ireland, EPIC Museum.
I finally went to Paris for a few days in June! Visited: Musée d'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Coeur, Notre Dame (closed to visitors due to renovation/restoration work but wandered around the outside and had a fabulous lunch). Bonus points for the Paris Métro, which fuckin rules.
I finally went to Italy for a long weekend in October! Got to see my folks that weekend as well. Spent time in Venice and Florence. Ate a lot of good food and gelato.
My beloved Seattle Mariners broke a 21 year drought and made it to the PLAYOFFS!!!!!!
I have been puttering away on a ROGUE ONE-FRINGE fusion/AU, ENDLESS FORMS MOST BEAUTIFUL. it has been super slow going but I am trying and I WILL finish it.
Similarly, sorta, I took a writing class! I shared a snippet of my original writing which was well-received. I got some lovely comments from my teacher which is currently sustaining me.
Anything bolded below is something I particularly enjoyed and recommend.
MOVIES
2022 movies I saw and liked:
TURNING RED
THE BATMAN
THE NORTHMAN
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
TOP GUN: MAVERICK
3000 YEARS OF LONGING
NOPE
SEE HOW THEY RUN
TICKET TO PARADISE
THE WOMAN KING
ENOLA HOLMES 2
BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER
GLASS ONION
BONES AND ALL
THE MENU
AMBULANCE
THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT
2021 movies I saw for the first time and liked:
ETERNALS
THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH
FREE GUY
SPENCER
THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS
UNCHARTED
TV
EUPHORIA (saw season 1, did not watch season 2. lol.)
MOON KNIGHT
FRINGE
STRANGER THINGS, SEASON 4
MS MARVEL
THE SANDMAN
THE CROWN (the first few seasons and then I stopped : / )
1899
DARK (BRO........ BRO........ BEST TV SHOW OF THIS CENTURY?????)
Special acknowledgment: ANDOR. what a trip and a half to see my beloved son on screen once more. I shared some thoughts here.
BOOKS
Did not read nearly as many as I should have! (I did read some other books but they are not on this last as I did not like them).
"Strangers to Ourselves" by Rachel Aviv
"Greywaren" by Maggie Stiefvater
"Babel" by RF Kuang
"She Who Became The Sun" by Shelley Parker-Chan
"Wild Game: My Mother, Her Lover, and Me" by Adrienne Brodeur
"The Hours" by Michael Cunningham
"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reid
"The Burning God" by RF Kuang (incredible series but BOY will it fuck you up!!!!!!)
"The Dragon Republic" by RF Kuang
"The Poppy War" by RF Kuang
"Winter Recipes From the Collective" by Louise Gluck
"You Feel It Just Below the Ribs" by Jeffrey Cranor
"Oscar Wilde: A Life" by Matthew Sturgis
OTHER GOOD THINGS
*some of these things are Good as in well-written or well-made, but maybe not Good in topic.
Saw a couple plays at the Abbey Theatre: "Translations" by Brian Friel and "Joyce's Women" by Edna O'Brien. Quite different, both devastating.
Morocco's run at the FIFA Men's World Cup.
Joplin Sibtain, who played Brasso on ANDOR, shared a reel on Instagram of the SPOILERS riot scene on Ferrix with "Killing in the Name" dubbed over it. Incredible.
Martin Scorsese watches DERRY GIRLS.
Local Man Sees Cheese For Sale At Incredibly Low Price, Makes Executive Decision, Purchases 40 Pounds of Cheese
Is Twitter dying? Probably. Here's a thread where everyone shared their favorite tweets.
This angry little dog.
Mother losing it over her baby's laughter.
Dave Sims' calling Cal Raleigh's home run that sent the Mariners to the playoffs for the first time in 21 years.
Janan Ganesh over at the Financial Times with an incredible and scathing assessment of why Liz Truss and the Tories have never gotten Brexit "right". (Hint: they think the UK is on par with the US.)
Twitter user attempts to summarize RIVERDALE in a thread.
This TikTok of two preteen girls discovering landlines that made me LOL and also made me feel DECREPIT.
Shauna Bowers for The Irish Times with a dispatch from Electric Picnic that featured bangers of lines, including: The most sacred Electric Picnic institution of all remains untouched: the inflatable chapel, where all true love stories begin. “That’s probably the only way I’d be able to get you to marry me,” a woman says to her boyfriend. He says nothing.
Ichiro Girl returns to T-Mobile Park and throws out the first pitch to, of course, ICHIRO.
A story about how dogs are the best.
Pianist named Alex Pian covers "Time" by Hans Zimmer in Lviv, Ukraine, as air raid sirens sound. Really powerful.
Emma Baccellieri for Sports Illustrated explores a topic we've all wanted to know more about: what baseball relief pitchers are thinking when they run in from the bullpen during a bench clearing.
This video of STAR WARS characters singing a classic.... just watch it.
MORE
CONTACT is one of my favorite movies and Rachel Handler for Vulture wrote an oral history for the film's 25th anniversary.
Stephania Taladrid for The New Yorker, on the ground at an abortion clinic in Houston when Roe was overturned. Required reading.

Ma Maison.
Tumblr media

Bisous
