Coding With Scratch Coach Interview: Connor
Tumblr media
Over the course of the summer we were able to work with hundreds of Scratchers during our Coding with Scratch program on Pursuitery.com. None of that would have been possible without the much-needed -- and much appreciated! -- help of our Scratch coaches, who assisted with everything from answering questions to making example games that illustrated code in context.
We recently took some time to chat with one of these coaches, the esteemed Connor (aka Technoboy10), because we were impressed by both his commitment as well as his enthusiasm for Scratch. We would also like to thank Connor, as well as our other amazing volunteer coaches, for all of the hard work he (and they!) put forward this summer to help kids all over the world learn about programming.
(Read more below, and check out our Coding with Scratch YouTube playlist here!)
Hi there! Would you mind introducing yourself?
Hi! I'm Connor. I'm a high school senior.
Where are you from?
I live near Boulder, Colorado.
How long have you been coding with Scratch?
Quite a while! I've been using Scratch on and off for about 7 years.
And how did you get your start with Scratch?
My dad introduced me to it, and I basically just played around with it.
So you volunteered as a Scratch coach and worked with us this summer on Pursuitery. Thanks a lot! Could you tell us about your experience as a coach?
It was super fun. I enjoy helping other people fix bugs in their projects, and I got to do a lot of that during the class.
Do you have a favorite project from your time as volunteer? If so, what was it?
I created some example projects for some of the harder challenges, and seeing other Scratchers base their projects off of mine was really gratifying.
Did you have any standout experiences? We were absolutely swamped with entries for quite awhile there!
The other coaches were really awesome, so it never felt overwhelming.
What kind of things do you like to do when you're working on your own Scratch projects? Feel free to share any links that you might have!
When I make Scratch projects, I try to find some interesting technique that I haven't used before, and play around with it for a while. If I find something really cool, I'll make a bigger project with that approach.
What are your plans for the future, as both a coach and in general?
As a coach, I'd love to help out with the Scratch classes this fall. In general, I'm working on finishing high school and applying for colleges.
Do you have anything you'd like to say to any of the summer participants who may be reading this?
Don't stop coding! Scratch is awesome, and there's so many possibilities for unique projects.
We appreciate you making the time to speak with us, and we thank you for volunteering this summer. We couldn't have done it without you! Do you have any final thoughts you'd like to share?
Thank you guys so much for organizing this! It was fun volunteering, and fun to see all the projects people made. Keep geeking out. :)
