The Lone Walk to Eternity
Within this Horror Unwaking
Louis laments the many regrets he has in life. Eternity is a long time to pass; the list of nightmares could only span so far, no?
[Chapter 1, Crossposted on Ao3]
To think that either path damns his dearest all the same.
The crew defeats the frenzied Silva, leaving the relics to take Luciel's body as their new host. Luciel sooner finds the new additions to his body twisting his very being from the inside—it is by Louis's intervention that the Queenslayer does not complete his rebirth as the Queen.

THE SILENCE THAT ENSUES RINGS DEAFENINGLY CLEAR. Deep is the blue that spills forth in the wake of his resolve, his royal decree; the brand that sealed his deal with destiny. But what quality marks nobility, if not the sacrifice it demands of those who wish to stake their claim upon it?
The sway of indecision is a dead adversary by now. A gallant knight is he to renounce his own heart if only to avail his dismal duty: the leap that tears him of hesitance’s manipulative strings. A shambling fool no more, he finds his limbs moving with fluid ease as they bring his sword through flesh and bone and the wicked Queen’s then-beating heart.
And like so, his prove to be the hands that ply the blade, that sever this world from the fount of its suffering.
From chaos delivered.
But what of this cold mask of stoicism when it finally lets up, cracks and melts?
Down with his verdict comes bitter tears unbidden like the storm that had rained for many nights before.
“Leave the rest to me,” is the meagre much Louis could mutter out. A gruesome conclusion attained in solace; a pathetic attempt thereof.
And the Queenslayer, oh, crushed as he is under the weight of his sanction, could offer naught a word in reciprocation.
Both men suspended in a static of their own pain, time grinds to a halt for them. The rest of the world is a distant abyss whereupon desolation’s forbidding knell descends—a shallow fanfare for a hollow victory. Shatter goes the Queen’s judgement thorns as they are called to resonate, swallowed up in the void harmony.
Louis could just hear how his blood sings in beat with his rapid pulse; mayhem blaring in his ears. It stings in his eyes, to be so rife than ever before with sentiments, each a contradiction of the other. Tears ripe to fall—bountiful fruits of his soul. What more can they (his eyes) betray?
Every next breath comes with a needle down his throat. Air sifts into his lungs in uneven chunks; so awfully thick they are that Louis could not help but to choke on them.
Every next breath grows shorter and shorter for the Queen in death’s waiting. Whatever awaits him on the other side? When the blade is withdrawn from his heart, what then, will become of him? How absurd it is that the question seems to weigh heavier in Louis’s mind than it does in Luciel’s.
For what else has he to worry about? To resent? To regret? As far as Luciel is aware, order will be restored upon Vein. Everything is proceeding in accordance with their initial plan. Naught falls outside of his foresight. Or does his silence bespeak of something other than acceptance?
No, for it is not Luciel’s heart that is in conflict. He has long since decided and is content to forever hold his peace.
Tick-tock; as precious seconds fleet away, Louis finds the steel chain that holds his will together coming loose. What paltry resolve he had garnered over the course of their journey as though evaporates; trickles to waste through old cracks that have begun to resurface all across his heart.
Tick-tock; the present moment he takes for granted in favour of questioning what could have been done differently. Yesterday’s regret was over his lack of strength to spare the previous queen from a fate worse than her already disgraceful demise. Today’s sorrow is brought forth by his overcoming of that weakness. How his heart yearns for another answer, asserting a different question: why, why must it come to this again?
Why was he not strong enough to steer fate away from this outcome altogether?
Tick-tock; even with much of it stolen, time has never made it to his hand in enough the amount. Though he had made the most of what he was given, regret finds him all the same, all too soon.
All over again.
Nada; the seconds have passed him by before he can string together a single conclusive thought.
The moment carries him worlds away that for a moment then, he is granted the clemency to forget his immediate plight. It really matters that little when Luciel’s body fails and falls before him, hanging limp on the blade of his sword.
As the light leaves his eyes—as he draws shorter and shorter breaths, so too does the sword become too heavy for Louis to bear. Even with both hands on the hilt and his entire strength put into the effort, life is still too hefty a thing for him to hold, to fit in his palms, to be taken in indifferent spontaneity.
A deep inhale steadies his trembling figure. With nary much else, Louis pulls out the sword in a single swift motion. Like a puppet bereaved of its strings, Luciel collapses onto the cold hard ground, sprawled as he welcomes death with arms outstretched.
The next spill to join the bloody mire and feed into the Gaol’s unquenchable thirst is the blue of Luciel’s own life essence.
Herewith does the Queen’s life meet its end—slain before the throne in the midst of his ascension by the very sword that had sworn him fealty. His was an abrupt birth that has found its true pair in an equally abrupt death.
Luciel tries his best to retain acceptance until the very end. He thought that mayhaps, it would make it easier for Louis and everyone else. That, maybe, he would have a better time fading from their memories if he were to go out without much commotion.
But as pain sets in and instinct overtakes, there is not much that Luciel can do about the way his body jerks reflexively in defiance of its shutdown; a desperate struggle that only serves to choke the last of his fight out of him.
Only then does he feel the agony of flesh sundered and he could not hold back the urge to scream from being crushed under the intensity of it all. Before even a drop of syllable could be given sound, however, Luciel has bitten down on his tongue, persisting to wallow in silence.
His eyes flicker, searching through the haze of his vision until they find their mark in those of Louis's. But faced with the terror and anguish alike residing within those crimson depths, Luciel stays his tears, his tongue gone still on its own.
“I’m sorry…” Luciel mutters only above a whisper. “…Thank you, for…” He breathes his gratitude—and weaker yet, he mouths, “…you.”
Louis does not spare himself any of the details. He witnessed it all; holding Luciel’s gaze until he was sure the latter had breathed his last. There is no harm in that, no? It is the least—the only measure of comfort that Louis could provide.
The rest of the crew gives him a wide berth. They turn a blind eye to his gleaming tears and a deaf ear to his unceasing sobs, pretending otherwise. They yet respect his vision of an infallible leader, even while every gulp of air crushes the tender swell of his heart in, while he bleeds himself dry with every breath.
“Louis…” calls a voice he is most familiar with. “We don’t have much time.”
Louis makes an attempt to answer, to voice his compliance, but all that falls when he opens his mouth is a slew of pitiful blubbers. He bows his head lower as though in sombre prayer, hiding his sorrow—hiding from his sorrow, for behold: the nightmare that had caused him many a sleepless night has reared into reality before him.
“We’ll help you take it from here.”
But Louis remains a trembling mess that he was. Having abandoned his speech entirely as it seems, his companions again afford him the peace to grief.
There is then the clamour of footsteps, closely followed by the Gaol’s ambient silence.
True enough, when Louis cast his gaze to take stock of his surroundings, there is not a single soul left in the vicinity aside from him.
And…
His gaze next sweeps over the soundly slumbering form of Luciel. At the sight, his feelings come at him once more, each and every at once. Finally does he buckle and yield under the bulk of his conscience after denying it for so long.
The coarse stone digs into his knees and shins. But Louis could not care less about it; the gnawing pain that creeps over to his palm as he haphazardly crawls closer to the revenant he so cherishes.
Louis turns the stiff body of Luciel over with care so as to not disturb his sanctity of death. How distraught is he to find that Luciel’s eyes remain unclosed postmortem, blankly staring back at him. Tears well upon those lifeless eyes, while some had run and formed trails down his face. Stilling his shaking hand, Louis brings it over Luciel’s eyes, gently dragging his lids down to a close.
Then, he wails. He throws his head onto the crook of Luciel’s shoulder and wails. He wails and wails, hollowing himself of the words he has lost the chance to speak, of the feelings he never before allowed to be known, of the ache in his heart that had broiled overlong. He wails at the top of his lungs; until his throat goes sore, so sore that his tongue could fall out.
Loud as he and his anguish are, the person he is calling for never stirs.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers. “I’m sorry.”
I’m sorry; a litany of apologies he utters without end with what little voice he has left.

Thank you for reading! This was actually my proudest work of 2023. I hope you enjoyed it! There will be a second and third part, but I regret to inform you that I may not be able to dish it out anytime soon (the perfectionist within me treats this fic like an Asian parent's firstborn son, it needs to be EVERYTHING; I would know). Please look forward to it still!
If you enjoyed this fic, please don't forget to leave a like and reblog!

~ When the Bells Toll ~ - PROLOGUE -
Day XX - Month XX - Year XXXX It wasn't suppose to be like this, the error of things had gone to hell I could tell, but when was it all going to end, the blood the ruins, the pain, when will the world come to a stand still, when would the pain end. All I knew was when I opened my eyes, I saw someone who looked familiar calling my name, but why did they look sad, why were they crying? Oh .... I remember now I was to die to be a sacrifice to save others, the one who was there with me held me close, oh it was louis I could tell now, his face came into sight now, looking into his crimson deep red eyes I searched with my golden hues, trying to muster words was hard as hell, it felt like acid was covering my wind pipe, but I had to speak even if...even if it were to be my last I had to tell him... Putting my shaken had on his cheek I smiled, then that's when I noticed , his love for me was pure and true, I had to end this I had to let him go..... but could I do it with what strength I had left? Louis: Come on Mari!! you need to hold on! No this isn't right! what happened to respawning, this has NEVER happened before ! Yakumo help me! we need to get her back to base come on! Yakumo looked like he was about to finally brake down and cry he was close to Mari just like everyone else was, Io on the other hand stood back from them, she was hiding something....knew something that could help, and Mari knew this. Mari looked over at Io and just slowly shook her head now, That was when Io looked to the side holding herself with the look of confusion and pain on her face. Louis noticed this tears falling at a fast speed he shouted. Louis: Io!! you know something that could help don't you!?! DONT YOU!!!!
Yakumo grabbed onto Louis and held him as he held onto Mari Yakumo: Stop! Stop Louis don't snap at Io she didn't do anything ! we will help we will all find away to save Mari... we all don't want to lose her! so please.... please Louis.... please stop... Louis looked down at Mari her eyes were now closed barely hanging on they knew what they had to do. Getting up jack rain into the area they were all in seeing the sight before his eyes .... he was speechless, with shaking eyes he laid his sights upon a bloodied Mari and gritted his teeth, rushing over he told Louis that the path to leave was not cleared, everyone was about to escape when an enemy leaped out knocking Mari from louis , he slammed into the wall and she flung into a pillar, with opened eyes she looked at him for what felt like forever before she mouthed Mari: I love....I Love you Louis... Am-Amamiya... As the Lost's were dealt with Mari's body went limp, the only sound that could be heard was the heart shattering screams of Louis... Io walked over to louis only to smile at him.... Io: Its begun, soon she'll be knew. This left so many unanswered questions and looks from everyone...what did Io mean.... // Well this was my first take on a prologue for the "When the Bells Toll" Fanfic of Code Vein, If you liked it and want for chapter 1 let me know ^-^ honestly had fun writing this. But fear not there is more to come!//

The sky is dark, not a pitch black, it is a deep and dangerous blue. Dark enough to hide the stars, but not dark enough to hide the clouds that looming above two boys. Those two run side by side, they are tired, yet, they continue without stopping at least once to rest.
They can't stop, if they do, the monsters would kill them since they are just mere humans. The world is no the same as before, is at the verge of destruction as it has fallen to a mysterious calamity known as the Great Collapse. In order to fight the monsters that began emerging around the world, humanity created the Revenants: human corpses brought back to life by implanting a Biological Organ Regenerative (BOR) parasite within the heart, acting as vampiric fighters with unique abilities.
Still, not all humans are protected by the Revenants, that's why those two  are running for their lives, trying to find a place where they can be safe.
They heavy boots thud against the sidewalk and it thud harder when they run against the howling wind. They feel it blowing through their coat, chilling every part of their skin.
In the fading moonlight, Rathion stops running and his friend Louis stops too. His friend took a good look at him, seeing the state he was in: his side was ripped open and his guts were spilling out. Rathion was on the verge of death, but his face was just a little pale, his calm gaze made Louis worry more. He knows that Rathion is suffering, but he still keeps that calm look on his face, so as not to worry his friend.
"Are you ready to leave me behind?" Rathion asked seriously, while coughing up some blood.
"I've told you before, I'm not leaving you behind."
They weren't out of the woods yet, the monsters were still behind them, maybe they had lost them for now. If they keep moving forward, there is a chance they could escape, but in Rathion's state, continuing is not an option for him. He will die soon, he can't be a burden to Louis anymore, if he stays by his side, Louis won't be able to escape.
That's why he must find a way to make Louis leave him behind, to save his precious friend's life, Rathion will do anything, no matter if it means being hated.
"Stop being a fool, there is no salvation for me. Haven't you noticed by now?"
Louis is aware of the state Rathion is in, but doesn't want to give up hope of escaping together. Rathion is still breathing, so Louis doesn't want to give up.
"It's still too early to say that, you're still breathing and you're still on your feet, there's still hope."
That little hope that Louis speaks of, had already been extinguished within Rathion's heart, he knows perfectly well that there is nothing that can save him. His destiny is to die in this desolate ruined city, but Louis can escape that cruel fate, he still has time to leave before the monsters find them.
"You want my sacrifice to be in vain, get away from here now!" Rathion raised his voice, still keeping his cool.
Louis remained silent, looking at his friend who, despite suffering, stands firm without showing any kind of weakness. He gritted his teeth, feeling frustrated that he couldn't do anything, that he had been a burden on Rathion's shoulders, causing him to get hurt. Yes, it's all Louis' fault, Rathion risked his life to save his.
Rathion does not regret saving the life of his precious friend, he thinks that it is better that someone intelligent and compassionate like Louis survive than a good-for-nothing, selfish like him.
Feeling guilt in his heart, Louis was going to turn around and leave Rathion behind, but he noted how Rathion's calm soon reached its limit. His knees bent and his body fell forward, Louis reflexively caught the upper half of his body. The smell of blood that he hadn’t felt so far stung his nose: It was awful.
"I told you it was too late, now leave me here and go." With difficulty, Rathion said those words close to Louis's ear.
Not listening to his friend's words, Louis sat down and rested Rathion's head on his lap. "I want to stay with you, at least until you close your eyes."
Rathion laughed slightly, he always knew why Louis was trying so hard not to leave him behind, despite knowing why, he's been ignoring it for a while now. He knows that he feels the same, but he kept quiet, pretending not to know anything, hiding what he felt in his heart. Those feelings will be buried in the depths of darkness, neither of them will be able to say anything.
The cold wind howled once more, with the possibility of a storm, everything smelled vaguely damp as if preparing for the humidity to come. Soon the tiny crystalline drops of water were trickling from up above, the overcast silver sky split by bolts of pale lightning. It was as if the clouds knew about the tragedy to come and wanted to wash away the sadness with relentless rain.
The water felt like little cold pinpricks as it assaulted his skin, the rain still not heavy, not strong enough to cover the tears on Louis's face. As he silently listened to the raindrops falling one after another, Rathion looked at Louis's face, seeing those beautiful red eyes brimming with tears.
If he doesn't say anything, his words would die along with him, like a smoke without a last sputtering of spit. There would be no ashes, no burnt pieces for Louis to keep. Not even a last strong gasp, or a mark of nails dragged. There wouldn't be no etchings, no last message for anyone to decode.
Everything about him would disappear, his love that had never been shown, would end without a residue of memories, without final words for Louis to remember. There are no photographs of him, there is nothing for Louis to cherish.
"Please tell me you'll fight this fight, I can't see without your light, I need you to breathe into my life." His words broke up and all he could say were stuttering sounds. Hot tears streamed down his face, he squeezed his eyelids shut with the hope his tears would stop. His choppy breathing and watery eyes remained for quite some time as he sat stroking Rathion's hair.
He didn't want this to be goodbye, he wants someone to tell him that this is not where it all ends. "Don't tell me this a is goodbye..." His words broke once again, his hands chaking, being afraid to hear an answer.
"I'm sorry, Louis." Rathion reached out and cupped Louis's cheek, he leaned in slightly.
He felt how Rathion's hand wasn't warm anymore, his hand was so cold, he was dying and Louis couldn't do anything to stop it. He kept crying, those tears that he couldn't wipe away, because they are the only thing he has left, to feel again the same warmth from Rathion's hands that he longed for so much.
The one he loves would be gone, without being able to fight, and with his suppressed emotions kept down. There's so many regrets inside Rathion's heart, but there's not a second chance for him to go back.
"It's time for you to go, they'll be here in no time." The bittersweet words left his lips but he kept the other words at bay -- the ones he could never, ever say. He dragged those deeply rooted words, pulling them until they wouldn't budge, wrapped them in his voice and never let them go.
Before going and leaving everything behind, Louis brought his face close to Rathion's, until their lips met. At this point he didn't care at all, if he end up being hated by the person he loves so be it, he will never see him again. It would be more painful for him to continue suppressing his feelings than to be rejected in the last moments of Rathion's life.   "I had a craving for a cigarette, but thanks to that kiss I don't need anything anymore."
"Don't be silly, how can you smoke in the rain?"
Hearing those words, Rathion laughed a slightly, Louis was right, no matter how much he wants to smoke, he won't be able to do it in the rain.
"Aren't you going to say anything about the kiss?
"I've known for a long time, and I--" Rathion begins to violently cough up blood, causing Louis to panic.
He could already feel how life was slipping out of his hands, in less than a few minutes death would take him away. For a moment he thought about telling Louis about his feelings, but then again it would be better not to say anything, that way it would be easier for him to forget about Rathion.
Without saying what he wanted, Rathion felt a huge sense of tiredness. The numb feeling grew stronger, his thoughts began to become more and more confused and disappeared like smoke. Tiredness has seeped deep into his bones, he needed rest, just a little bit of rest. He knows that if he closed his eyes, he would never open them again, still he wanted it all to end.
The moment Rathion closed his eyes, the rain fell mercilessly, washing away everything in its path, trying to drown away Louis's tears and screams.
"Don't go, please stay by my side. Open your eyes, look at me with a smile like you always did."
Seeing the person he loved die in front of his eyes made him feel cold, it is not that simple cold that one feels on a winter day or the chill when drinking a cold drink. It's something hollow and empty. Like something's missing and it aches. A deeply cold and tired soul that he just can't shake, Rathion has left a hole in Louis's heart.
He has lost a big part of him, and he wonders where lies his heart now, that damaged, splintered in shards heart of his. He is alive thanks to the sacrifice of his friend, who was pierced by the arrow of death that captured his last breath.
In that night that sheds to dawn, Ration lost his life, his aura faded into darkness, a tunnel of grey.
Louis had so many things he wanted to say and he knew Rathion left some things unsaid, all of it and the memories they had, good and bad… They're all over the place as he holds Rathion's hand one last time. He couldn't stop crying, realizing this is the end.

CODE VEIN: When The Bells Toll
CHAPTER
                                2
----------------------------------------------------------------
It felt like there was a wait on her chest a warm heavy one, what was this? Opening up her eyes slowly she noticed that the night had come and there was a dim candle lighting the room, was everyone asleep already?
Trying to sit up, she felt that heaviness again, what was it?
Looking down she noticed it was Louis asleep on her. When did he get there?! And WHY was HE sleeping on her?! Not to mention in the same bed as her.....?
Oh no did something happen?! Looking under the covers a little she breathed a sigh of relief .
She still had all her clothes on, wait...why was she even thinking like this?? Louis would never take advantage of her? He's to much of a gentleman and would never do anything out of his element. She shook her head with a slight smile before putting her hand on his head rubbing it lightly.
A smile rose from the sleeping Louis as he spoke softly in his sleep.
Louis:..... No.....that's a good book hah..ha I'll read it for you "
Mari couldn't help but stifle a laugh from coming out, this was adorable in every sense.
Though she was pretty thirsty so she tried to move him lightly so she wouldn't wake him up.
With much success she placed him on the bed and covered him up before blowing the candle out an leaving the room.
Out of the room she turned the corner only to see Yakumo standing near the wall, trying to just walk by him he opened up his eyes and grabbed her wrist as he looked at her.
Mari: C-Can I help you with something Yak-?!"
Before she could say anything he pulled her in for a hug.
Yakumo: why don't you trust in us more? We are here to help no matter what."
yakumo held both her wrist with one hand as his other tilted her chin up so he could look at her more. Looking from her eyes to her lips his heart skipped a beat, damn this wasn't good....
Louis stirred from the other room noticing Mari had left. Getting up he walked out only to come upon a scene that from his prospective wasn't good, gripping the book in his hand he gritted his teeth and he glared at Yakumo.
Louis: What are you doing Yakumo...."
Yakumo: ........
Mari: I-Its not what it looks like I swear boss?!"
Louis: oh....i know how it looks mari, what are you doing up."
Mari: i-i was thirsty but then Yakumo grabbed my wrist and pulled me to him and then..."
Louis walked up to the two pulling Mari away .
Louis: go get something to drink then take a bath .... I'll talk with you an mission here soon so go take care of things."
With that Mari took off fastly and left Yakumo and Louis standing there, tensions high as shit that a knife can cut right through. Walking up closer to Yakumo he gripped his shirt and pulled him in.
Louis: Don't touch her.....shes not a toy..."
And with that he threw him into a wall, Yakumo wiped his mouth.
Yakumo: Well what if I told you I liked her Louis....what then?!"
With a dangerous look Louis turned around and glared with killer intent.
Louis: then I suggest you don't."
yakumo: SAYS THE PERSON WHO HASN'T,SAID SHIT ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL TOWARDS THE GIRL THEY SECRETLY LIKE!"
Dashing into him Louis knocked Yakumo to the ground.
Louis: I take things at my own place! Plus it hasn't been that long since she woke up! Do you think she needs that right now?! Our feelings?! No I personally don't! No stop!"
Throwing him on the ground once more he stalked off.
Coco overheard everything and walked from around the corner only to sigh at Yakumo.
Coco: looks like trouble in bro paradise ?"
Yakumo clicked his tongue as he got up and dusted himself off.
Yakumo: stay out of it coco....wouldn't want you to be pulled into Un- needlessness its between me and louis"
Coco: you mean, over a stunning girl who is oblivious to the feelings of two guys?"
Yakumo clicked his tongue before stalking off as well.
Looking over at the bath/hot spring Coco had a look of worry on her face.
Coco: poor Mari...doesn't even know the trials ahead of her....will she be okay? I wonder..."
In the bath/hot spring Mari just sighed sinking into the bath.
Mari: what.....what was all that about...
