I forget who said it, but I stand by the Headcanon that Neal got this way of holding Henry from his own papa. Yes, he’s carrying a pre-teen boy (a sleeping one at that) and that adds on more weight, but that’s also how one would have to carry a child if they’re also balancing a cane.

Once Upon a Dream: Deleted Scene

This scene was deleted from Chapter 12 of my Swanfire fic Once Upon a Dream. Henry and Neal discuss the fire and explosion at City Hall.

"Hey Neal!" Neal heard Henry cry as he ran up to him. "What happened? We heard something explode! Is everyone okay?"

"Hey buddy," Neal replied, his lips pressed into a thin line as he looked at what was left of the town hall. He'd been tempted to go to the hospital with Emma, but he knew she needed space. It wasn't the time to try to make up for everything, not yet. Not while they had to tip-toe around Regina. "I'm not sure what happened but there was some sort of fire and explosion at the Town Hall while your mom was inside. But don't worry. Everyone's fine – Emma saved her. And everyone'll be ready for the debate tonight."

"There won't be a debate tonight," Regina suddenly said from behind them. There was a glint of disgust in her eyes that was just subtle enough to go unnoticed by most people. "Given Miss Swan's injuries, Dr. Whale has informed Sidney that she will be in the hospital for a few days. We'll do the debate then."

"Hospital? What happened?" Henry asked, his eyes wide with concern.

"I told you. She saved your mom's life trying to get out of the building. She cut her hands on some glass," Neal explained. "Don't worry buddy. Do you want to go visit her?"

Henry nodded, and Neal looked at Regina nervously. "I can take him if you want to go home and get some rest. I'm sure today was exhausting for you too."

Regina nodded slowly, giving Neal a slight smile that didn't have chills going down his spine. "Would you really? Thank you Mr. Cassidy. Henry, I'll see you at home for dinner."

Henry nodded as Neal guided him toward where his car was parked.

"You're sure she'll be okay?" Henry asked as he climbed in the passenger's seat. "When I brought her here I didn't think…"

"Henry, don't you dare blame yourself for this," Neal said when he was sure they weren't going to be listened in on. "The curse needs to break. You wouldn't want to leave all of these people trapped without their memories, would you?"

Henry shook his head.

"This is just like another one of your stories, and you know that sometimes the hero gets hurt. Harry Potter gets hurt once a book… at the minimum. But everything turned out okay in the end for him."

The ten year old bit his lip as they pulled into a parking spot. "I guess."

"Think of it this way. This is like… Order of the Phoenix. You're Harry, and you know something is desperately wrong, but most people don't believe you. At the end of the book, everyone will know the truth."

"But that means someone I care about is going to die."

Neal bit his lip and tilted his head. "What if it already happened? What if it was Graham?"

Henry's eyes widened. "Whoa. You're right. It could have been Graham."

Neal nodded seriously. "So what do you say, Henry? Think you can hold on for a couple more books? Emma's gonna you to help her believe."

He watched his son pause, before nodding. "Yeah. Okay, yeah. The operation is back on. Will you help me?"

Neal hesitated. "As much as I can, Henry. There's a lot between Emma and I that still needs to be worked out. Now c'mon. Let's go see her."

Neal doubted Emma would want him trying to tell her about a curse, but he would do what he could in order to help Emma see that the world they lived in was more than it appeared.
