About me
Tumblr media
because i've never actually introduced myself properly oops
Basic Stuff
Aypa - he/they - 22 - autistic - french
I live in France and I write my stories in french first (duh), I was an english major and i'm currently doing whatever the fuck i'm doing in my master degree
I'm a writer so I obviously love writing but I also like psychology and the wonders of how human work (because I'm autistic so instead of masking in an effective way I just started analysing everyone around me)
For now i'm writing Morbid Minds, a coming of age story about weird guys in high school, but most of the time I write fantasy, just not now, my brain is focused on these idiots
I've got a few others stories in my head that I never talked here (and that are older than Morbid Minds) but there's Midnight Whisperings, a fantasy story about anthropomorphic cats and oppressions (in a medieval era with kingdoms, banned magic and religion, this story has been there since 2017), Chronicles of a Broken World about getting out of a cult-like facility that wants to use you for your power (in a 80s urban fantasy setting and a pinch of the "indigo children" myth from the New Age movement, there's 3 arcs with different main characters every time) and Teenage Headache, a coming of age story similar to Morbid Minds but the teens are french this time
so if someone is curious you can ask about one of them too ! Maybe i'll make post about it idk

I have what I call a "evil special interest" on Warriors Cats because it was my special interest growing up but now the writing and inconsistence piss me off so I will rant about it if provoked and that's not a joke, that's a threat
but the real evil special interest I have is about crimes because i'm not gonna go far in society with this one but oh well at least I can incorporate a lot of details about criminal cases in my story

I made a horrible mistake in telling @ludwig-and-co about Dark on Me from Starset is from Sam's perspective of how he lost Cruz and how he's living through that pain, THEN THE MOTHERFUCKER DID THIS
Tumblr media
TO ME VIA USING DARK ON ME LYRICS AND I'M CRYING INTERNALLY CUZ HE SAID THIS IS REVENGE FOR ALL THE ANGST AND FEELS I'VE PUT HIM THROUGH. I am the in Pain™ over this and I want to squeam. Also I linked the story and some of the parts here are also semi-spoilers cuz I have yet to even write those out. Except for the 4th panel which is something I've already written thankfully. But yeah!
Also to anyone who sees this, Anubis/Ramon de Romero-Cruz is my be RvB OC and I love him lots so now you get to perceive him and the fact I ship him with Sam.

🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
LET'S SEE. it's always so hard to choose these lol. I'm gonna go for a ffxii one cos I'm writing fic for it atm, so surprise! Cid/Vayne - my headcanon is that they were fucking nasty regular style in Cid's office- no i jest. I think Vayne spent a lot of time at Draklor ostensibly overseeing Cid's developments, but in reality just enjoying spending time with him as their relationship deepened. I'm still undecided whether they fucked before the end of the game or not (I like both!!), but if they did I think also that Cid is an incorrigible sex toy maker and Vayne is his fave test subject. In this essay I will-
🪐 ⇢ name three good things going on in your life right now
I'm back writing in my fave fandom for a ship I've not written for like 12 years!
ffvii rebirth is FINALLY OUT and I got tickets for not only Crosses but also Starset again and I'm meeting Mark Sheppard at a con next month and then after that going to my first trek con ever!!
Very nearly 50k of intensely iddy, hot, sappy old man oc ship that's feeding me every day and making me go absolutely fucking insane with the need to bite clean through my phone!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
🦋 ⇢ share something that has been on your heart and mind lately
Moderating my very first ao3 exchange, which has been both an intensely fun and incredibly stressful experience lmao. I feel like we've run the whole gamut of Things That Happen In Exchanges and we haven't even had reveals yet!!! AUGH!!! Having fun tho, AND I got to make spreadsheets, so who's winning really?! The answer is me, cos not only did I get to make spreadsheets, I also shook my gift and THE TAGS LOOK SO GOOD I'M FUCKIN VIBRATING 👁️👁️👁️
(btw we have 2 post deadline pinch hits that still need picking up if anyone fancies it! Please check this post for details and instructions!!)
Thank u for the questions bb!! 💖💖

Hey BB!
V/D here haha
I was listening to some of my music and suddenly while listening to one thought of Worship!Altair
It's Bringing it Down from Starset
Something about the line "hanging from heartstrings dripping in bleach" conjured the image of a bloody sword Altair haha
Random thought I decided to share haha x3
I also think the vibe/emotion? In the music also got me thinking about him. Hard to explain cos I'm usually a vibe for songs person - so if the sound of a song fits I feel like it fits my character etc so I think that's maybe where the thought came from
I also think maybe Fever from Citizen Soldier might actually fit his actual character in the fic more?
Sorry for the rambles haha, just wanted to let my random thoughts known but I didn't wanna comment them on the fic cos it feels silly? Idk
Just based on some other people who've suggested music to me Starset in general tends to be a Vibe with most of my music lol. Idk what it is but Starset music absolutely fits my writing as far as Vibes go.
On listening to those songs. Yeah. Vibes. Especially for my Tortured Blorbos. (hilariously most songs that fit my old worst blorbo Altair also fit my new worst blorbo Shin. When your type is the Worst Men Alive)

Feel free to not take my request if it doesn’t inspire you but I have this idea that Todoroki and the female reader in the between friends and lovers stage and their feelings come out after articles are written shipping/ talking possible romance between them (much like all their classmates) after a successful team up with their (round 2) work study agencies. Either way, thank you for taking the time and writing such lovely pieces !
sparks flying
✰ pairing: todoroki shoto x f!reader
✰ wc: 1257
✰ warnings: not proofread!
✰ summary: when the news starts speculating a potential romance between you and todoroki, the two of you talk and come to a realization about your feelings.
✰ a/n: 1) sorry this took so long, nonny. hope you enjoy and thanks for requesting! // 2) the reader has a galaxy themed quirk and Starset is their hero name ^-^
Tumblr media
Your blood was boiling. Even though all of you knew being heroes would mean your privacy would be totally invaded all the time, seeing it happen in real time was worse than you’d imagined.
“Don’t pay attention to it, kid,” Hawks said, grabbing the magazine sitting open before you and tossing it in the trash. “It gets easier to ignore the longer it goes on.”
“It is just dumb speculation,” Tokoyami nodded beside you. “They did it to all of us, but all they picked out were strong friendships.”
“I guess,” you conceded.
“Exactly. All it means is our team-up with Endeavor’s Agency was a success.” Hawks ruffled your hair before stretching, getting ready to head out. “If you and Shoto are friends, don’t let these stupid articles get in your head.”
“Yeah, that’s what we are,” you pouted. “Friends.”
“Ohh, so that’s how it is,” your mentor smirked.
“W-what do you mean?”
“Maybe you ought to mention the magazine to him after all,” Haws said with a wink. Tokoyami just sighed. “Anyway. Tsukuyomi, Starset, I’ve got some stuff to deal with so I’ll leave you in my sidekick’s capable hands again.”
With that, he sped out of the buildings and took to the skies. Really, you should have been focusing on the team-up. Like Hawks said, it was successful, and you actually got to learn from the hero himself for once. He always seemed to be busy with something these days, though neither you nor Tokoyami knew what.
Alas, all you could think about was the countless articles and stories covering the round 2 work studies, and speculating about all the possible relationships.
“Are you ready to go?” Tokoyami asked, rising from his seat.
You nodded. “Yeah, let’s go.”
You’d just have to deal with your worries later. The only question was, should you listen to Hawks final piece of advice. True, it could be just what you need to get out of the awkward stage you were in, but it could also ruin everything.
~~~~~~~~~
Todoroki’s face was as expressionless as ever as he stared at the TV screen in his dorm room. To any observer, he’d seem mindlessly engrossed in the program. In reality, however, his mind was running a mile a minute.
“As many fans have speculated in the past, heroes-in-training Shoto and Starset seem to be deeply in love,” one of the news anchors on the screen said.
“They certainly do have chemistry,” her co-anchor eagerly agreed. “They’re even ranking top in the polls for people’s favorite ship.”
That got Todoroki to flop back on his futon. He didn’t particularly care to see the numbers. Still, he listened.
“Is it any wonder? Just look at Shoto’s adoring gaze as Starset uses her galaxy themed powers,” the original anchor spoke again. “I mean, are we sure those are Starset’s signature stars that she’s throwing, or are they just sparks flying?”
“Exactly! And I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone of their team up during the Sports Festival’s cavalry battle. It-”
He’d finally had enough, flipping through the channels until he landed on some sitcom, desperate for anything that wasn’t talking about what the other program had been.
While the corny laugh track played in the background, Todoroki opened his phone and scrolled through the article he’d pulled up: How to Tell if You’re Crushing on Your Best Friend. Each point it brought up convinced him even more that he was in love with you.
It’s not like no one had suggested that he was before; it’s just different when Midoriya brought it up to him, letting him know the whole class thinks they’d be cute together when he asked; it was an entirely different story when a slew of media outlets were discussing it.
Anyway, even if he did like you, how was he supposed to tell how you felt? Any articles he tried to find on that weren’t as helpful, often contradicting each other. It was a lot easier to discern his own feelings than interpret what was just you acting like his friend and what was you giving hints you felt something more. Even if Midoriya insisted you clearly felt something more for Todoroki.
There was a knock on his door, accompanied by your voice. “Sho, can I come in?”
He quickly closed the article he was looking at and sat up again. “Yeah. It’s open.”
You seemed nervous as you came in and sat next to him. The air was awkward, something that had never happened between you before.
“So,” you began, “I assume you’ve seen… any news outlet, really.”
“Yeah.”
You scratched the back of your neck before continuing. “What do you think of it?”
Todoroki shrugged. “I’m kind of used to the invasion of privacy being the kid of the number two hero.”
He watched as your face contorted into a frown before you turned your head away. Though he wanted to reach out, say something else, he wasn’t sure what would comfort you. As close as you were, he still hadn’t gotten the hang of that.
“I-it doesn’t bother you at all?”
He thought for a moment. “In some ways, yes, it does.”
You faced him again, face calculatingly blank. “What ways?”
“Well, I don’t like that they dragged you into it. I know it’s stressful.”
“Oh. Well. Thank you.”
Another silence lapsed as the sitcom he had on continued to play in the background. Unable to take the awkwardness—especially because you were the only one he’d never felt awkward with—Todoroki took your hand, lacing your fingers together and resting his head on your shoulder.
“You know, Sho,” you chuckled, “it’s almost no wonder why they think we’re a couple.”
Afraid he was hurting you in some way, he tore away. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
“No, no! It’s not that!” You quickly seized his hand again. “I promise, you didn’t.”
“Oh.” He waited a moment, hoping you’d say more unprompted. When it became clear you wouldn’t, he ventured a question. “What is it then?”
You puffed out your cheeks then slowly exhaled. “I kinda wonder sometimes if we’re a couple. I mean, obviously I know we’re not, but sometimes-”
“It kind of feels like we are one,” he finished for you.
“Yeah. I think we’d be good at it, the whole dating thing.”
Todoroki never particularly thought he would be before, but with you? Yeah, he did. He really did. And he’d have to be crazy to not try to have a relationship with you, his best friend, the person he cared most about, the only one who could draw out the unreserved smile currently painted on his face.
How long had it been since he’d known such joy before he met you?
“Will you be my girlfriend?” he asked then, only slightly rushed, yet not so much it sounded strange.
“Yes,” you breathed with eyes wide. “Yes, Sho! Yes! And will you be my boyfriend?”
He smiled at your cheeky tone, suddenly enthralled by your nature being, and gaining a surprising bit of confidence.
“How’s this for an answer?”
With all the tender sweetness of a fairytale prince, he cupped your face and kissed you, lips doing a dance together. When you did finally part, he was blushing all over.
“Hm, I’m not sure,” you teased, elated. “Perhaps you could repeat-”
He wasted no time in kissing you again. “Yes. Yes, I’ll be your boyfriend. And I’ll be happy to repeat my answer as many times as you want me to.”
For the kissing prompts : 12 "Sneaking away to a hidden corner to share a secretive kiss." + kylux.
(Not sure if you're saving them for later or actually want requests? So no pressure!)
Hey, there! I am taking requests, although my brain latched onto this prompt so hard the moment I saw it in my inbox that I couldn't not write it anyway. Hope you enjoy it!
-------------------
The celebrations last five days.
It’s the longest week of Kylo’s life.
He understands the need for extravagance. As the Supreme Leader and the Grand Marshal, they represent the all-powerful and resourceful seat of the First Order. With the way congratulatory notes—both digital and physical—rained upon them after the announcement, each trying to secure an invitation to the ceremony, they couldn’t book anything short of a two-mooned planet to accommodate their hundred-page guest list, allocating the time to personally greet and entertain every individual.
Why the kriff that means he can’t be alone with his husband for five minutes on their own wedding, he doesn’t understand.
Hells, he doesn’t even know where Hux is. Since they got pulled in different directions earlier, he’s only caught glances of Hux here and there—schmoozing with dignitaries from systems under their rule, laughing with sympathizers they’re trying to sweet talk into a formal alliance, making sure the holocams get his good side.
The official schedule puts Hux in the Gold Coast Hall, which is bantha shit; Kylo’s just been there and didn’t see so much as a flash of Hux’s black-gold uniform. The Wanderlust has been off limits since that incident with the Chiss aristocrat. That leaves seven rooms Hux could be in—rooms that are connected to the next one with long, narrow glass walkways that show off the rust-brown ocean under their feet, full of guests Kylo would rather cut off his left arm than interact with a second longer—
Cloaking his presence with the Force, he flees from the building.
The gardens are as artificially lush as the rest of this cursed planet. He follows the glass pathway until he stumbles upon a free bench surrounded by garren trees, where the pressure of minds against his isn’t as persistent and the deep notes of the orchestra blends into the background noise.
Part of him feels like he’s failing Hux by hiding out here. They’re equals in responsibility as much as power. Kylo should be by Hux’s side, keeping the conversation flowing when Hux gets too tired for it, redirecting the attention onto himself before Hux gets overwhelmed. Is Hux disappointed with him? Does he regret marrying a lousy excuse of a co-ruler even before the ceremony is through?
If he is, Kylo wouldn’t blame him for it.
Someone clears their throat.
He jerks his head up with a crack, his hand flying to the empty lightsaber holster at his waist. Against the backdrop of streetlamps lining the pathway, Hux is a vision. His golden laurel and the lines of his uniform shine under the low glow; the rest of his outfit eats up the light like a black hole. His steps are quiet on the soft soil as he approaches the bench, the hem of his cape dancing by his ankles.
How did Kylo get lucky enough to call him his husband?
“Will you remove the—” Hux gestures vaguely in Kylo’s direction. “—the Force around you? I’d like to be able to look at you directly.”
Ah. Kylo dispels the cloak with a wave. Even though it’s not a physical barrier, a cool breeze surrounds him immediately, untucking a few strands from his loosened bun.
Brushing his hair out of his eyes, “I needed some air,” Kylo explains—a weak excuse even to his own ears. “I was about to go back in.”
Hux raises a brow in amusement, sitting primly on the bench. “Were you?” he asks, crossing his ankles. “Shame, I was looking forward to having a few moments alone with you.”
Kylo’s heart expands painfully in his chest. Hux smiles like he’s content to waste his time doing nothing with Kylo, seated with his thigh and shoulder pressed against Kylo’s on a bench for five. Kylo throws an arm over the backrest and Hux burrows into his side, unconcerned with rumpling their uniforms.
In their periphery, the venue towers over the tallest trees, bright like it’s trying to be seen from the space.
“Won’t they come looking for us?” Kylo can’t help asking. This feeling of eyes on his back, of being hunted down, has followed him since they stepped foot onto this planet. He isn’t sure that he’ll be able to shake it off even after they leave.
“Not soon. I’ve got nine lieutenants stationed in every room, telling people I’m somewhere else when asked. By the time somebody realizes I’m nowhere, the night will be over.”
Hux, scheming to get away from work? Narrowing his eyes, Kylo turns to look Hux in the face, feigning disapproval. “Are you playing hooky, Grand Marshal?”
Hux shrugs his free shoulder, a glint in his eyes. “We are playing hooky, Supreme Leader,” he corrects Kylo, sliding a hand over Kylo’s chest, shoulder, nape before tangling his fingers in Kylo’s hair. Kylo is leaning closer even before Hux pulls him in, his heartbeat quickening. “And we’re winning.”
Hux’s lips carry the plum wine they serve in the Starset Lounge, a syrupy aftertaste that Kylo chases blindly. So that’s where he’s been, crosses Kylo’s mind briefly before Hux’s fingers tighten and Kylo couldn’t kriffing care less anymore.
Inside, the ceremony goes on, thousands of souls celebrating in their name.
Dustin Bates: A Crazy-Ass Artist Profile
All artists have some sort of origin story. Whether it’s a bat-shit crazy way of making themselves famous or a gradual rise to stardom, all artists have come from somewhere. STARSET’s lead singer and songwriter Dustin Bates has his own story, one of which I feel is quite interesting and a fun thing to hear about.
Despite being such a fantastic musician, Dustin did not attend college for music. His interests were more in engineering, as he attended Ohio State University for a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and followed that with a master’s degree in avionic engineering. With his degrees, he then went on to do research for the United States Air Force, followed by gaining a teaching position at the International Space University located in France.
Pretty fuckin’ wild story so far, right? We haven’t even begun talking about his musical background yet, and there is a lot to unpack there as well. The theme that has been developed so far is basically, Dustin is a very well rounded individual and artist.
Eventually, Dustin co-founded a rock band called Downplay, which started as a cover band who released their first studio album titled “Saturday” back in 2005. This was Dustin’s first attempt at publishing music, and while I personally don’t like the music that the group put out at the time, it was a good starting point for them. The band would then go on to release a couple more records in the following few years.
Come the year 2013, Downplay takes a very unique shift. The band didn’t completely dissipate, but instead morphed into another group and changed their name. This would be known as the birth of the band this entire blog is about, STARSET. The newly named band released their first album “Transmissions” that same year, with the hit track “My Demons” that started it all. This album, and slightly more specifically the aforementioned track, would mark a huge milestone for Dustin and his band, with the song gaining over 280 million views on Youtube by 2016. Within that same year, Dustin then goes on to publish a book related to the music of STARSET, titled “The Prox Transmissions” which follows the fictional story of Dr. Steven Browning as he tries to reclaim his lost memory and decipher a cryptic transmission he receives. This book reveals the start of the hidden lore within STARSET’s music, and would mark the beginning of one of the greatest fictional stories a band has ever told through their music.
youtube
In January 2017, STARSET dropped their second studio album, titled “VESSELS”. This album also had a hit single, titled “Monster” which would be one of STARSET’s most commercially successful songs, gaining the No. 2 spot on the Billboard US Mainstream Rock Charts later that year in May. The album’s song “Satellite” gained the No. 12 spot on that exact same chart. This would mark another turning point for the group, as they started to use much more live recorded string instruments on their tracks like violin, viola, and cello, which added a whole new layer of depth to their music. STARSET was beginning to take the world by storm, and it only got better from there.
youtube
Fast forward to April 5th 2019, Dustin published something a little bit different than what his audience would normally expect, as he decided to take a small break from writing and producing music under STARSET. He adapted the name MNQN for a side project he was working on, which was an album of electronic music also named MNQN, featuring popular songs that were released as singles prior to the release of the whole album like “Man on the Moon” and “iGhost”. The music is much different than the normal STARSET music, taking on a much more chill and almost lo-fi aesthetic. It was a deviation that was based on a different kind of music Dustin wanted to try writing, and while it doesn’t fit the normal STARSET vibe, the music is still great. Since its release, Dustin has talked about more music being released under the name MNQN, but nothing has been released since.
youtube
The next release from STARSET came on September 13th 2019, this being their album “DIVISIONS” which was and still is enormously popular. This album started to lean more on different kinds of electronics and synthesizers, those of which had timbres and sounds that weren’t used in previous albums released. They also started messing with the form of their songs more, which made for some super catchy and interesting music. This album also had record setting tracks, with the single “MANIFEST” reaching number 14 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and the other single “TRIALS” reaching number 8 on the same chart. The aesthetic with the story STARSET was writing took a sharp turn with this album, as music videos released were less focused on futuristic technology/transmissions and more focused on the evil corporation in the story called New West and the rebels attempting to stop their development of a dystopian future. This was also seen in the band members’ outfits, as they went from wearing custom spacesuits to tattered, apocalyptic clothing.
youtube
The most recent release from STARSET came out on October 22nd, 2021, this being their new album “HORIZONS”. In a recent interview, Dustin called DIVISIONS and HORIZONS “sister albums”, saying that HORIZONS is an expansion on what DIVISIONS has built previously in terms of music, form, and story development. Something unique about this album is that people are finding a lot of literary and even historical/literary references in this album, two examples being a snippet of the Icarus and Daedalus story being told at the end of “OTHERWORLDLY” and a potential reference to a book by Carl Sagan in the song “DEVOLUTION”.
youtube
To date, that is everything that Dustin Bates has been up to. For someone who is only 34 years old, the man has lived quite a sizable sum of different lives, and I personally look forward to seeing what he does next, especially with where he takes MNQN since that was such a unique deviation from his normal work. This was a long one, so if you made it this far, you’re a beautiful individual and I hope you enjoyed! You should definitely check out the new album HORIZONS, and I’ll see y’all in the next one. Peace.
Welcome!
Hey! Hi! Hello! I'm Roarelle, from @the-starset-system ! (You can just call me Roar or Bug tho)
You can find more information about me and this blog below ↓
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
🌠 What's this blog for / about?
This blog was made for me to goof off and indulge in things I like without disturbing those who follow our main for more educational leaned stuff. I'll mainly be ranting and reblogging stuff, mostly aesthetics and fanart. I may post art every now and then as well, so we'll see!
Tumblr media
📖 About me
Well, for starters, I'm the host of a traumagenic DID system. If you don't know what that means, then I recommend looking at our main to understand better.
But, with that out of the way, My name is Roarelle as I already stated, though I also go by bug. I don't have any preferred name, so it's just what you can remember ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I identify and pansexual and genderfluid. Any pronouns are alright, just nothing dehumanizing.
I'm a minor, sixteen, so please do not engage any nsfw interactions with me, please.
Tumblr media
💫 Interests
I like drawing and writing, not much said there ┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌
I've been into Undertale pretty much since it came out, though the multiverse side of the fandom is what interests me.
I enjoy playing video games, Minecraft is my go to, but I also adore Skyrim, greedfall, and the assassin's Creed franchise.
I also like the dream smp! (Reminder that I don't support some of the content creators actions or words, nor do I really keep up with that stuff, I just like the storyline they've made :P)
I have a hard time getting into shows, but anime is cool ig, I think astroid in love is really cool.
Tumblr media
⚠️ DNI'S
I don't want Endogenic / non-traumagenic systems here, nor supporters. NSFW accounts should be pretty easy to understand why they shouldn't be here.
Any other basic criteria's apply, please be respectful of my choices.
i’m a big fan of treating music like poetry, because music really is just, poetry with rhythm and/or melody. and i had it drilled into me when analyzing poetry that the author is not necessarily the speaker, that even when a poem says “i” that doesn’t mean the speaker is the author.
and LIKE i know with music, most lyrics are written where the author and the speaker are one and the same. but i’m also a big fan of songwriters being able to write outside of their experience, and also them being able to retain privacy regarding whether or not a song is from experience or not. so i really don’t like to assume that the person who wrote the lyrics is writing from experience, so when thinking about a song i always like to distinguish the speaker as someone separate from the writer. the only times they should be treated as one and the same, i think, is when the writer confirms that yes they wrote this from experience and that this song is about them
SO like when looking at the genius pages for starset songs it’s always like. “dustin loves this girl” it’s like................... why are you saying dustin for? why are you assuming things about him? this especially rubs me wrong with songs from divisions which are yknow, about an unhealthy relationship, and it’s like... has he ever said that he’s writing from experience? i don’t really pay attention to the real people from the bands i like, so maybe he has, but i don’t remember seeing it anywhere. so like, why are you assuming something so deeply personal about him just because he wrote it?
it’s like.. perfect machine is from the point of view of someone who is the abuser/toxic person in a relationship. to say that, just because it’s written from that point of view, and written by dustin, that it’s from DUSTIN’S point of view is just.. huh? especially considering that perfect machine obviously ties into telekinetic, but that song is from the abused person’s point of view, but dustin also wrote it? so dustin is both the abuser and the abused? he abused himself???
like for the love of god just say “the speaker.” yes dustin wrote it and sang it but it’s not actually HIM. there’s a story being told here and to ignore that just.. does a disservice to this album?
ALSO i love how, when they do this, like equate the speaker and the singer as being inherently equal, they always say that the love interest/other person in the relationship is a woman. like there are NO pronouns in this song other than “you,” there are no indications of the other person’s gender. nor are there any indications of the speaker’s gender either! but by putting dustin as the speaker it’s like ok well the other person must be a woman then. i see this with other songs and bands too and it always irks me. like this is a gender neutral song for both the speaker and their love interest but you just.. make it inherently straight by assigning the male singer to the speaker...
i mean idk i know i’m very standoffish when it comes to the real people behind the music i listen to. i genuinely do not want to know anything about these people. i know that i’ll never know them for who they really are beyond their music, and i’d like to keep it that way. so i literally do not want to assume anything about them because then it feels so so weird. like assigning them these deeply personal things when they never confirmed it actually happened it’s like.. i literally dont know you. and frankly i dont want to. if a musician comes out and says “yes i was in an abusive relationship and this album was written entirely about that” then thats one thing.. it still makes me deeply uncomfortable to know such a raw and personal thing about them, and to always have that in mind when i listen to the album.. but ultimately at least they were the one to come out and say it, yeah? so for ambiguous things where it’s not confirmed that it’s written from experience... to just ASSUME that it was, and like, insert them into a raw and painful song where they never necessarily said that they’re actually In the song, it’s just.. what are you doing? you don’t know this person. you never will. why are you assuming these things about them. IDK i guess tl;dr for this paragraph is that, i know i have very strict boundaries up between me and musicians and maybe that’s where this whole post is coming from.
but also like i just think separating the musician from the music in cases where they aren’t explicitly one and the same also helps with just... the art of it? the art of the story being spun? if i know it’s someone else’s REAL pain and real suffering being poured into this song it makes me so.. uncomfortable. to listen to it in my leisure time and appreciate it musically. when someone’s voice breaks when singing a line it makes me uncomfortable because, yes raw emotion! but knowing that.. there’s a real reason why their voice cracked, why they have such intense emotion.. it’s just, how can i celebrate that? and then i find it hard to enjoy the song or relate to it myself, because it’s about the musician’s experience, not mine. i know they released it to the public for a reason but it still feels like i’m co-opting someone else’s experiences and pain for myself, and i have no business doing that
SO I GUESS it’s just. idk. it’s more personally enjoyable when there’s a line drawn between the musician and the music. and also i think there’s a lot more room for artistic exploration and storytelling when you’re no longer restricted to only what you know and have experienced
it’s just, you can write a book or poem in the first person, but people don’t assume that “I” is referring to the author, right? so why can’t we extend that to music too.
TL;DR when we talk about songs, can we please just refer to the pov person as the speaker rather than the singer/lyric writer themself? unless they’ve confirmed that this is written about their experiences, i just think it’d be more respectful and artistically freeing
Note
1-50 of the writers ask thingy, tell me everything :D
D:
1 : What age-group do you write?adult! ive always written characters my age or a few years older
2 : What genre do you write?sff, mostly fantasy
3 : Do you outline according to big ideas or small details?hmmm, i guess small details? when i get an idea, i get an idea for single scenes or pieces of dialogue or a certain character, so i piece together an outline from that. but i have trouble with a overarching plot lol
4 : Which do you prefer–line-editing or plot-revisions?line-editing, i love editing. revisions suck bc it takes me 10,000 yrs to come up with an idea and now i have to replace it with another??? blasphemous
5 : Do you write better with or without deadlines?ive written my whole life without deadlines except for when i tried nano last year and failed. so without i guess, but then i dont have anything to convince me to write more lmao
6 : What would be the biggest compliment you could hope to receive on your current WIP?idk probably that its someones favourite book, or to see fanart *.*
7 : How long is your current WIP?26,305 words, its a rewrite heh
8 : What author would you be most excited to be compared to?hummmmmm,,,idk when people call new fantasy books “the next game of thrones” it sounds so fake lol but idk who my favourite author is...
9 : What do you struggle most with as a writer?writing
10 : Do you brain-storm story ideas alone or with others?mostly alone but YOU, ASH, help sometimes. its good to get an objective ear
11 : Do you base your characters off of real people?nah lol, im not good at characters
12 : Is your writing space clean or cluttered?clean
13 : Do you write character-driven or plot-driven stories?plot-driven. my writing is extremely fast paced, and i dont tend to like reading character-driven works
14 : Do you have a favorite writing-related quote?ive answered this in previous ask. the 'drunk on writing’ one by ray bradbury
15 : If you transport your original characters into another author’s world, which world would you choose?everyone else’s worlds are so harsh lol maybe id put them in atla so they can fuck around w bending
16 : Would your story work better as a movie or tv show? Why?miniseries ゚*。(・∀・)゚*。 but it would lend itself to a movie yeah
17 : Do you make soundtracks for each story?nah, lazy ass
18 : If you could assign your story one song, what would it be?unbecoming by starset
19 : Would you rather live in your characters’ world, or have your characters come live in our world?honestly? i wanna escape capitalism and wield a sword
20 : What book would you love to see adapted for the big or small screen?zero world by jason m hough!!!! its a pretty big book i think a movie duology or a tv show would work!
21 : Do you finish most of the stories you start?no
22 : Has your own writing ever made you cry?no lol
23 : Are you proud or anxious to show off your writing?anxious cz im bad
24 : When did you start considering yourself a writer?i meannnnnnnn do i even now thoooooo
25 : What books are must-reads in your genre?sff is so broad, read whatever tf u want
26 : What would you like to see more of in your genre?diversity, not just in race gender sexuality but in fucking plots like damn give me something w a twist
27 : Where do you get inspiration from?real life, books, movies
28 : On a scale of 1-10, how much do you stress about choosing character names?about a 2, i just search on a generator until i find one i like im not a stickler for names nd i dont usually have placeholder names or anything
29 : Do you tend to underwrite or overwrite in a first draft?chronic underwriter hence the only 20k words
30 : Does writing calm you down or stress you out?calm me down, i have no control over my own life so its good to have complete control over my oc’s lives. i dont tend to have the ‘characters run away from me’ thing, but probably bc i dont see it like that lol
31 : What trope do you actually like?ride-or-die, charas who are knowledgeable and badass from the beginning, i hate following the character learning to do something lmao im impatient
32 : Do you give your side-characters extensive backstories?depends on the side character, every character is fleshed out to an extent but i dont do a massive family tree or anything
33 : Do you flesh-out characters before you write, or let their personalities develop over time?i tend to create characters before plot so i would say i know them pretty well before starting but i do let them develop naturally within the story without forcing them into any box
34 : Describe your old writing in one word.tryhard
35 : Is it more fun to write villains or heroes?mmm both have their merits, i went through a phase where i loved villains but a warped heroes journey or a morally grey/anti-hero can be super good too
36 : Do you write with a black and white sense of morality?nah, murky
37 : What’s one piece of advice you would give to new writers?try anything. anything it doesnt matter if ur nervous or you ‘dont write in that genre’ or you dont even like that genre. its good to train yourself and go out of your comfort zone, makes u a better writer imo. also dont read this and think ‘im not writing an entire historical romance novel bc i hate it’ i mean just one shots. a paragraph or two. try out writing prompts, it really flexes ur skillsalso dont feel like everything u have to write will be published, thats what i mean by try out little paragraphs or prompts. let go of this idea that any of this work will see the light of day [unless u rly want it to] and just have fun, go wild, go crazy, go stupid
38 : What’s one piece of writing advice you try–but fail–to follow?its mostly those ones that help u have cleaner, more beautiful writing. i write really beige-like and its hard to be poetic or flowery
39 : How important is positive reinforcement to you as a writer?probably super important
40 : What would you ask your favorite author if given one question?when ur next book out
41 : Do you find it distracting to read while you’re writing a first draft?nah
42 : Do critiques motivate or discourage you?ive never really had many, so i would say discourage bc i dont have a thick skin with my writing
43 : Do you tend to write protagonists like yourself or unlike yourself?unlike myself, i like to write bold, confident characters and im not that lol escapism much
44 : How do you decide what story idea to work on?whichever interests me the most at the moment, i can jump between projects easily so i dont have a problem
45 : Do you find it harder or easier to write when you’re stressed out?harder, i cant look at my writing if im stressed else ill absolutely hate it and might do something drastic like delete it all lol
46 : What Hogwarts house would your protagonist(s) be in?ary is slytherincyri is ravenclawash is gryffindorcaena is slytherin [i dont know how to spell the house names]
47 : Where do you see yourself as a writer in five years?still writing id hope
48 : Would you ever co-write?nah
49 : Are you a fast and rushed writer or a slow and deliberate writer?i used to be fast and rushed bc i was so impatient i just wanted to see the end product but i realised that i really love being in the world of my wips as long as possible so i draw it out and really mull everything over
50 : Would you rather be remembered for your fantastic world-building or your lifelike characters?both lol? i do love worldbuilding but i think characters make a greater impact
(p1) okei, what i think I can gather about you from your art/writing,(bare in mind i haven't read your long fics/most drabbles yet tho). Your 200+ OC's of different nationalities show you want to live in a thousand cultures, have a thousand lives and live in every part of history, but as you cannot, you have 200 OCs which is almost like containing 1000 souls (very relatable tho).... But 200+ OCs and your longest AU's are massive, show yeah 👀👀 And you enjoy ships that bicker... cos....
(pt2) cos the intimacy needed for that is HUGE. You love the 'i love you, i hate you, but i cannot escape from you' -> bonus points if it's history, language or culture that ties your ship together. Additionally: -completed devoted to the one they love (and would suffer for them) is a dynamic that interests you -u think the italian language is hot af -i get the feeling that michele is either how u want to be loved (idyllic love), or michele is how you love, cos that's your comfort ship (sic/ire)
1. That's pretty accurate! I have this fear that I'll never have enough time on this earth to do what I want (but I've been working on getting rid of that fear. There's enough time). I'm so fascinated by the world that we're living in, what used to be and how it relates to what is. The endless multiplicities of identity that a group can contain or even an individual.
So indeed, I make OCs based on what I learn about the world and in turn the OCs give me a good way to interact safely with the knowledge I find. It's a perpetuum mobile of creativity and knowledge.
And history is just the entirety of human experience on this planet, so trying to breathe some more life into it via Historical AUs is one of my favourite ways to engage with it. I love writing term papers as much as trying to apply the scientific findings to actual people. (I think one of my favourite things may be Sexuality in the res publica AUs, the do's & don't's that aren't the same as they are now. I freed Michele & Lovino from their catholic guilt, only to immediately constrain them with the class & gender expectations of the Roman Republic lmao).
2. I never thought about it like that, but yes! I enjoy bickering because it's an admission of closeness! You can't have friendly bickering if you're not close! (Which is why Hugo & Alois Are Like That. I enjoy them constantly mocking each other greatly, but it's never friendly and it always ends in a mess).
My family had and has its shares of problems, but I know that we love each other. Immensely. We're also that kind of family to constantly poke fun at each others, so I think that's why I instinctively resort to this kind of dynamic, with any kind of close relationships. It's not the ONLY one, because that would be boring, there are so many more ways to express love and it naturally doesn't suit every kind of character.
(I just remembered when we were at the lunch table and my dad spotted a magpie on the stable roof.
Mom: " ... why are my curtains pulled back again?"
Dad: "So that I can watch magpies.")
Here are some more non-romantic examples from my work/with my characters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AA(The last one was a response to a tiktok that was basically "Asking your nice friends for fashion advice vs asking your mean/honest friends for advice")
3. I DO love the "i love you, i hate you, but i cannot escape from you". Maybe also for personal reasons, we're not getting that private on here. It's one of the inherent tragic aspects of Hetalia that has fascinated me for a long time: They're human and they feel like humans, but they lack part of their free will. They somehow have to survive entire lifetimes, loving and hating and remembeand worse, they have to bear decisions they themselves don't necessarily make. The relationships they form with the only other people like them, whether it'd be bonds of platonic, familiar or romantic love, the only solace and stability might have, may be snatched away from them. It can turn to hate or grow cold or another nation can disappear afterall and there is nothing they as individual people could have done about it. It's a double-edged sword - You tie yourself to someone who could be your raft as well as sink you to the bottom of the ocean.
I inevitably ended up keeping this kind of relationship in my "Like Father Like Son" Universe. Now, quick disclaimer - I am not saying they are solely the victim of their circumstances. They're all criminals in my AU and I have zero patience for making excuses for the Organized Crime. I worry greatly about the problematic aspects of my work and am well aware of them. The last thing I ever want to do is actively romanticize the Mafia. I want to add for the following part, too, that I draw as much on the real world as possible, but the structures of the organized crime in LFLS are a little more reminiscent of Monarchy or Aristocrazy.
With that out of the way however, the worldbuilding in LFLS mirrors their existence in Hetalia. Escaping their position would come with great dangers, even though their existence as is will never allow them true happiness. They're different from the people around them and there is a special connection between the Hetalia characters as bosses here - All of them inherited this position. They all basically suffer under the same yoke, they all are faced with the same difficulties. And, like in Hetalia, some of their decisions are out of their control. Business overrides their private life. They have to look out for their own people and families, for their own survival, so they may hurt the ones they love. And yet, and yet, they cling to one another. Try to make it as functional as possible. Take the pain for the relief. It's not pretty, but it's fascinating as an onlooker and fictional tragedies are also a great outlet for one's own emotions.
4. That also kind of ties in with "completed devoted to the one they love (and would suffer for them) is a dynamic that interests you". Hells yeah it does, because two people losing themselves is beautiful. Yes, it can be toxic, yes one should take care of oneself and have boundaries. But unconditional love is something I believe we all yearn for and I hope I one day get to devote myself to someone else again, as much as is healthy.
Again, it's also not just perfect for lovers, but for siblings and guardian figures. Paddy would lay his life down for Harry, Charlie & Soph. ("There's no pain that I won't go through/Even if I have to die for you" - Starset; "I love my children more than anything in this life! I will chose their happiness over mine, every time!" - Slightly changed version of Congratulations from the Hamilton Mixtape).
Gilbert who's so eager to be here for Ludwig and to protect him; to take anything off his brothers shoulder that he can.
And on the romantic side, is there anything better than two people simping head over heels for each other??? Or when a character wants to kiss/fuck another one so bad that it makes him look stupid??? I also love more quiet, more serene relationships, but to appreciate their calm, you have to make a storm to compare them to. All storm or all calm only gets you bored and exhausted.
5. Hell yeah do I think the Italian language is hot af, who'd disagree with me? It also unlocks emotions that were previously unavailable when I listen to Italian music. (German does the same. There is just something to each language that it can express certain feelings in a way like no other). YOU tell me that you listen to Shimmy Shimmy by Takagi & Ketra and aren't hypnotized by Giusy's voice. No other soundtrack for my Sicilians, Greeks and Turks fooling around on a beach and being highly erotic with each other.
6. Hm, this may be tying in with 2 again. I think I'm more of a Harry, personally, to be honest! (Nerdy, got aggression problems, cheeky, hothead, can't really cook). I think SicIre is my comfort ship because it's the type of love my parents had. It's what I am most accustomed to and there's also just a beauty in not caring what the rest of the world has to say and doing your own thing. And Harry isn't the prettiest bloke on the block and will probably never think of himself as beautiful, but that is fine because Michele looks at him like a sky full of stars. And the entire world can tell him Michele's a bastard, Harry won't listen to them. From a hetalia standpoint, these two are islands who had to suffer a lot from foreign occupation and being regarded as backwards & weird. Sicily tries to keep the autonomy it has and makes sure that others know they aren't like the mainland and Ireland fought hard for its independence from the British empire. From a LFLS standpoint, Harry embraces Michele with all of his past baggage and jagged pieces. Harry is the first person Michele never fell out of love with, the only one, and he's here to reassure Harry that he is worth caring for every step of the way.
