1899 Character ages

Reasons to consider watching 1899 if you'd like to, maybe:

Periode drama vibes with beautiful costumes and set decorations

Big cast with every character having a backstory that you get glimpses of which make you want to know more

Actors in the cast are beautiful and they all speak their own language or more or less broken English which makes it all seem so much more real

Unsettling music that fits the atmosphere super well and keeps you hooked

The characters are complex. Lucien acts like a miserable asshole but you can't help feel for him too. Iben is terrifying and cruel but you can tell where her devotion to her god comes from and again you feel for her. Not one character was simply good or bad in this show

Eyk crying. Don't know what it is but a grown ass weathered by the sea man crying his heart out makes me feel things

Ángel starting out as a wolf (his words), self centred and taking what he wants, only to crumble in Ramiros arms once shit hits the fan

Tove. I love Tove and I would die for her

I love Olek and I would die for him but he'd probably die for me first cause that's just the kind of guy he is

Whatever Jérôme and Clémence have going on

Whatever Ling Yi and Olek had going on

I want to cradle Krester in my arms and give him some soup

All those fucking Danish names sound so fun to me like sure there's a guy named Anker

The actress who played Maura put her everything into this performance and I respect that

I think clèmence is a straight up ai or code or something. Maybe programmed to be a helper or part of the machine (as realised in 1899 as someone programmed to be an ideal wife or mother) who starts to break under her programming - because she doesn’t want her perfect marriage. And she doesn’t want children. Or even to live our her code. Can’t get out of my head the fact that

a) beyond almost anyone else she’s always identified by the triangles that hang from her ears

b) the detail she probably didn’t have a letter, but instead took it from the pocket of the trousers she took from ángel’s room. She’s pretending to be invited onto the ship, even if she was already part of the ship

c) no fucking backstory at all

d) an AI programmed to serve breaking into sentience meet upper class society woman from 1899 breaking free see what they’re doing see

Clémence wearing these gay ass pants was definitely a choice; but this would’ve snapped me right out of existence ... I mean ... look ... look ... a little bow tie ... a massively oversized jacket ... a straw boater hat ...  the ‘Gay Nineties’ were truly a win for the sapphics huh ...

The wolf-obsessed stokers are hilarious (aside from being a bit rude to Olek). Do you think they'll be in season 2? I sure hope they are.

I mean, the Eyk/Maura question is a fascinating one, and while I can only offer up speculation, I can't help but think that they way that they are immediately drawn to each other from the first episode has to mean something. (There's also all the inadvertent touching and the hugging and the longing stares... and the adjacent pods...) There are mysteries to this show that we're clearly not going to solve in the first season, but I suspect we'll learn the nature of their relationship beyond the simulation in the future. (For now, though, there's always the consolation of reading/writing fic, one of my favorite season-hiatus pastimes...)

The spaceship, I suspect, is reality, but if it's another simulation and we are in some kind of Inception-esque simulation layer cake, I am going to lose my goddamn mind.

Clémence is a goddess and I covet her triangle earrings. She and Tove can stay BFFs or just say "fuck all men" and become a lesbian powerhouse couple that buys a farm in Vermont and raises Tove's baby together.

Jérome and Olek bonded over bread and being imprisoned by mutineers and they haven't looked back since. After Olek proposes to Ling Yi, he'll ask Jérome to be his best man, who will throw him an epic bachelor party that will be talked about for years.

I hope the stokers show up in every season of the show. I like to envision them instantly appearing every time a new simulation starts, sweaty and covered in coal dust and spouting off nonsensical conspiracy theories about fluoridated water and the moon landing.

I think Clémence and Virginia are the only ones that neither have their own memories nor feature in someone else's, tho. Very suspicious. Not in the way I think they might be Ciaran lol, but wondering what's up with that.
