Image and character not of my authorship
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
Cyan.
- Cyan is another one of the witches with a very small part in the series.
- Very little is known about her and she never really spoke in the series.
- But to my mind, she seems like a quiet girl anyway, I'd say she wouldn't speak even if she had the chance.
- She seems to be the kind of excluded girl who is very quiet and who just focuses on her goals in life.
- Her name means the color greenish blue and maybe her powers have something to do with the aspects of light.
- Everyone knows that witches take their power from darkness, but no one ever sees the bad aspects of the light itself.
- All types of magic have two ways of being used depending on their purpose and intention.
- I would say that Cyan can blind her enemies and can make illusions based on the distortion of light.
- A witch who uses the dangerous aspects of light, like Stella in Fate, but Cyan does it on purpose.
- She seems studious and seems to have been the type who didn't mind taking the test a second time upon entering Cloud Tower.
- Cyan might be one of the trickiest minor witches to face, not because she's too powerful, but because you can't trust your eyes when facing her.
- Although, unlike Mirta, Cyan can only distort light, so her illusions are not tactile, they cannot be touched.

okay but because of the ask i just realized the Trix genuinely get no sun for their main s1-3 era. they start at cloudtower that's perpetually, well, cloudy, on the best days. then they get psychologically tortured at light rock that has at least normal sunlight. and then they go right back to no sun ever by first hanging out with Darkar, underground, for the next few months, then Omega, that's all underground ice caves, and then Valtor, who's primary hideouts are all either at cloudtower or... underground. again
is it a witch thing to be biologically fine with no sunlight ever or are they all suffering from critical vitamin D deficiencies while going stir crazy without realizing

Sketch of Griffin, might colour… at some point. Will also try to add Ediltrude and Zarathustra onto this page.
Drew her in Edwardian clothing, as her hairstyle in the series somewhat resembles that.
It has only been edited to make the pencil clearer.

TWO PROOFS OF THE FACT THAT WITCHES ARE CANONCALLY GOOD
first:
Tumblr media
from @winxwiki post. here is their translation (i slightly edited it):
Cloudtower knows and researches evil: it (the school) takes advantage of the enormous energy to take it over and replace it, taking its disruptive force. Both schools (alfea and cloud tower) fight for the same end but in very different ways.
It means that they fight evil by controlling it rather than destroying it
second: (from s2ep16)
Tumblr media
Unfortunately in the english dub she says otherwise:
which is a school where witches use magic to be destructive rather than do good
This is shameful! Cinelume dub is a mess in fact im making a compilation of most of their errors through season 2, which is the least faithful to the original dub.
in general think about it. witches are mostly never opponents of the winx, just in season 1 and season 6 (those girls were freshmen manipulated by the trix). In the rest of the cases they help the winx or are neutral (or get controlled). Ms. Griffin herself is a good person who likes to make pranks to the fairies, that's all.

So you remember the Gala for the new students event in Alfea in season 1, don't you? The one in episode 3. In the show Red Fountain and Alfea hold a party in Alfea to welcome the new students. I always wondered why it were only two of the magical schools and Cloudtower was missing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So in my headcanon it always had been an event for all the three schools. They all worked together and held several events together to strengthen the bond between specialists, fairies and witches. However this bond broke:
In the last semester, the school year before Bloom attends Alfea, there had been an accident involving three witches and a fairy. The accident was mentioned in canon: Stella blew up the whole potion laboratory. In the show it's a funny accident, that shows how Stella has a hot temper. In my headcanon Stella didn't only blew up the potions laboratory, she also killed a witch by accident. It happened, that one night three witches entered Alfea to get Stella's ring. Stella however, was all alone, since she didn't have formed a friend group that year and the witches chased her through the nightly corridors of Alfea in order to catch her and her ring. She fled in the potions laboratory, where the witches faced her. The three witches were Icy and Darcy under the command of Lilith, a witch in her third year of Cloud Tower. Lilth has a special connection to the dragon flame and views it as her personal right to possess it. Since the royal family of Solaria inherited from the royal family in Domino (also my hc) Lilith suspected the dragon flame to be kept in Stella's ring. (False assumption as we all know.) I'll make a post on Lilith once I made her backstory up in my fanfiction. She however didn't fear any consequences. She wanted the ring and she would get it even if she had to kill for it. So she faced Stella, hurt her, tortured her (Stella has a big, fkn witch trauma) demanded the ring. Stella however all alone and scared af tried to defend herself, her powers went out of control and she blew up the whole laboratory with Lilith in it, whose body was burned to death. Icy and Darcy managed to escape and were only slightly hurt (and under shock, especially Icy who saw her friend, her leader dying. She has also a big fkn trauma and it's the reason for her hatred towards Stella. There will be only one fairy soon, whom ahe hates more). That all however wasn't made public. In fact no one really knew what happened: Faragonda and Griffin came to the conclusion that it was a usual fight between fairies and witches which went out of control. As a result Faragonda reduced the contact with Cloud Tower to a minimum and excluded it from the gala and all other events. Griffin is deeply hurt and pissed af. She always valued Faragonda as a close friend, an important friend. That friend who was once an enemy but helped her escaping Valtor. This close friend now turned her back on her and, as she sees it, betrays her. Not only did she lose her best student (Lilith), she also lost her best friend. That's why she doesn't prevent the Trix messing with the fairies. She deeply believes Lilith's death had been an accident and doesn't see the banter between Winx and Trix as something dangerous. How few she knew...

Hey Rist hope you're doing okay! Since by this point I've noticed that we all dislike Shadygonda with passion I've wondered do you think our girlie deserves a redemption?
ohohoHOHOHO MASSIVE misunderstanding here my friend! Shadygonda (imo) is a cunning-petty-powertripping-sweetly-selfserving little BITCH — and I love her SO MUCH!!! I want her to be worse if anything!!!
Let’s talk about her character in canon and in my personal little fanon head bubble for a moment, because I think she's by far the character I’m most curious about when it comes to motivations and goals. Because she's so. So much, all at once, and none of it seems to fit together but somehow it DOES!
Here's an incomplete list of what we know, chronologically:
Faragonda is a part of the Company of Light, alongside Bloom's parents, the blacksmith guy she keeps flirting with, Saladin from Red Fountain and Griffin from Cloudtower. In her brief flashback to their prime, they look all super young, maybe a little older than the Winx are during their school years. Early to mid twenties maybe? Thirties would be pushing it, but could work. We don’t know how their age gap is to Oritel and Marion, but probably not that big.
Griffin started out as Valtor's accomplice, but ended up joining Faragonda and the rest, presumably after having met them a few times in battle and building enough of a relationship with them that she could dare to take that final step
Tumblr media
(I wanna emphasize: In Griffin's flashback in s3, she looks back towards her time with Valtor in a way that’s not displayed very literally, but rather plays with symbolism and stage acting a little bit. One of these days I wanna do a full breakdown of that, but for now let’s focus on the very last scene. Griffin, alone and vulnerable, clearly in distress, lands at the gates of Alfea, which open for her immediately. Alfea, not Domino or Red Fountain. The place most heavily tied to Faragonda. This, to me at least, implies that it was Faragonda who offered her a way out and welcomed her with open arms — maybe she's even the one who convinced her to defect in the first place.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The company of Light continues to fight the ancient coven, Daphne is born and grows up (16-20 years old?), Queen Marion gets pregnant with Bloom. Faragonda is presumably present for all of that, and has a good relationship with all characters involved. (Except maybe for Daphne, we never see them interact. But nothing is stated to the contrary either.) The final battle happens, Oritel and Marion are missing, presumed dead, their children as well. Hagen fucks off into irrelevance. Faragonda, Griffin and Saladin are the only ones who survive and stay in contact.
There's a non-specific time frame in which we don’t know anything about Faragonda, roughly from the Fall of Domino — or maybe a few weeks prior to that, if we assume Valtor's capture happened before the final showdown on Domino — to the day Bloom arrives at Alfea and kicks of the main story. What was Faragonda up to in all those years? Nobody knows.
Current time! Faragonda greets her new students, like every year. Welcomes them to Alfea, like every year. Tells them to, and I quote, “Stay away from the Witches of Cloud Tower”. You know, like every year. We know she does that every year, because this is Stella's second rodeo and she knows the warning by heart already.
Already we have a FASCINATING new question: what happened between Griffin and Faragonda??? She and Saladin are still on good terms, but Griffin's school is EXPLICITLY warned of and constantly uninvited to events, which is straight up hilariously petty. The last we knew of them, they were allies, trusted friends even! What DELICIOUS drama occurred while no one was looking? So many possibilities.
Next thing that happens is she finds out that there's a student under her nose who enrolled under a false identity — and immediately got into mischief. Which, as it turns out, she finds delightful. Bloom gets to stay with Faragonda's personal, explicit permission, and against the wishes of Griselda. Why, you ask? 'Cause she can. Faragonda's a boss ass bitch who don’t need no reason, that’s why. She seems to think it’s funny lol
My memory of s1 is a little blurry, so I might be missing some events. The next thing I can think of is Bloom's escapade in the library, which Faragonda — or maybe the librarian at Faragonda's behest? — gets under control again. Faragonda finds out that Bloom is looking into Daphne. Faragonda, who has first hand knowledge of the fall of Domino, the battle against the ancient coven, and presumably met Daphne IN PERSON on several occasions. Chooses not to share any of that. And instead collects EVERY SINGLE SOURCE on Daphne she can find, and personally REMOVES them from the library Bloom has access to. Why, you ask? WHY THE FUCK NOT, I SAY!
Shit escalates, plot happens, you know the deal. Conflict occurs that could have been avoided entirely, if Bloom had been aware of her origins or followed Daphne's cryptic warnings earlier. Faragonda helps Bloom find out all the plot necessary details, and happily assists her in her journey to regaining her powers. Does she ever mention her reasons for not doing so like, 8 months ago? Does she? No I’m asking, I literally cannot remember if she let out a wise old “You Had to Find Your Own Way”, or perhaps a “You Weren't Ready Yet”. Either way, I don’t remember her sharing her thought process here in any great detail. Why, you ask, and plug your ears as to not get swept away by the shock wave of my booming voice. To which I take a deep, long breath, break several ribs in the process, and holler into the aether: WHY THE FUCK NOT YOU PEASANT!? ARE YOU AFRAID OF FUN? DO YOU HATE HIJINKS AND SHENANIGANS? Do you not like delicious drama or perhaps a good, shocking reveal?? Do your parents even love you?
And it just keeps GOING like this! The doylist explanation is obviously that the writers were making shit up as they went with every new season they got greenlit on, but the in-universe implications are FASCINATING!
When Faragonda is not busy flirting with old colleagues, she is revealing plot-relevant, potentially life-saving secrets — or keeping them from coming out. She is sending the Winx on dangerous missions — or specifically forbidding them from going on dangerous missions! Faragonda is oscillating wildly between maternal overprotectiveness, stone cold commanding tone, wise mentor or strict obstacle on the Winx's path, and she does so with an air of lovable silliness that contrasts wonderfully against Griselda, and an aura of real, threatening power that scares off enemies for the Winx more than once. She doesn’t really feel inconsistent to me, more like she contains multitudes, and her status as someone with both power and knowledge elevates that even further. She becomes a person that is wrapped in layers and layers of different personality traits she seems to pick and choose from in any given situation. She is both incredibly powerful and deeply unserious — the latter only serving to highlight the former. She isn’t really concerned with impressing the people around her, the way Valtor would be for example, but she does get cold and serious when faced with the parent committee trying to expel Bloom, or any other threat her students might be facing.
Her concern for her students, I believe, is one hundred percent genuine. She risks her life for them. She pretty much gets killed in the attempt to lure Valtor away from the main battle at Alfea, where her students are. And after that, she goes RIGHT BACK to fighting him the NEXT time the Winx are facing him alone. No hesitation, no fear, this time she has back up and she kicks his ass.
Which just makes her decisions to distribute knowledge so sparingly all the more baffling! What is WRONG with her? (affectionate)
This is where we enter my personal fanon territority, because canon never does answer those questions. And my theory is, that Faragonda is a fucking control freak.
Girlie LOVES to know more than others. She THRIVES knowing something you don’t! She's like a chipmunk going hee-hee-hoo-hoo as it smugly shovels nuts into its cheeks. I think her changeable demeanor and very flexible persona is a conscious, deliberate choice on her part, cherry picking what she thinks best serves her interests in any given situation. Her lovable goofball energy makes her the fun parent, compared to Griselda's strict parent, which I think both feeds her ego and gives her an in with students who see her as the lesser evil / someone on their side. I think Faragonda has the cunning to be an excellent manipulator, to the point where every single interaction with her becomes a very one-sided chess game, even when there's nothing on the line. Personally, I think that is both the reason why Griffin chose to trust her, and the reason Griffin and her had a falling out. I think she put all her mind and effort into convincing Griffin to leave, to get out while she could, to HELP the Company of Light and find a better life with them. I think she was using all her people skills and mannerisms to earn Griffin's trust and affection, which probably saved Griffin's life in the end. And I think after the war, when there was no more strategies to come up with, no more battles to plan and no more pieces to analyze and move, the very cunning that first drew Griffin to Faragonda became UNBEARABLY irritating. (Personally, I think they fucked nasty and then had an even NASTIER divorce. This place isn’t big enough for TWO morally ambiguous bitches. Faragonda got custody of Saladin it seems lol)
And to get back to that s1 decision: My theory is that she didn’t remove the books about Daphne because she didn’t want Bloom to find out the truth — I think she didn’t want Bloom to find out the truth before SHE HERSELF did.
But why, you ask, and this time I am going to actually answer without causing bodily harm to you or myself. Why does she do all this? What is her goal?
Nothing. Fuck all. Faragonda isn’t manipulating people because she wants power, or because she's secretly evil or anything. Faragonda is probably mainly acting out of habit, because she doesn’t see anything wrong with being the smartest person in the room. If you asked her point blank why she always needs to be the person that knows the most, she would probably say that that’s just her job. She's the headmistress. She's a member of the company of light. She's on out of just three surviving members. It's her job to protect her students, and to do that, she needs to know what the threat is, how to stop it, and who needs to know what in order to accomplish that. If one of her students knows more than her, who knows what decision they would make that she has no way to foresee. They're like, 17. Teenagers are dumbasses. She's the most qualified to call the shots, so call the shots she will.
You could dig into trauma for that if you wanted. Survivors bias. She's the one that lived. Oritel and Marion died; even Daphne, a literal god-like nymph, has died, but she survived, and she got Griffin out as well. If she's the one in control, things work out. If she's the one ensuring that people think what she wants them to think, feel what she wants them to feel, these people live. (All three of Oritel, Marion and Daphne were very independent from her, mind you. They were royals of a sovereign planet, the most powerful realm in existence at the time: Faragonda had no power to give them orders, and was probably more of an advisor in that dynamic. But Griffin, the traitor witch? Saladin, the young mage? They were likely much more within her power to lead and control, and both of them LIVED.)
Add to that that she's navigating a tough political landscape. She has to answer to the parents' board, which consists of like. Every single monarch in the dimension. Leave aside that this lady is probably stressed the fuck out, she has to be very aware of the way her actions, and any events in her school, reflect on her on the global level.
So, to come back to your question. I think Faragonda is a DEEPLY untrustworthy person who likes to cause problems on purpose :3 TM but also genuinely cares. TL;DR:
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for your ask, I LOVE getting to talk about these characters. If I were to do any sort of “redemption” for Faragonda, it would have to just be 6 months of straight up therapy and pedagogy training lmao. And maybe a nice, chill vacation.
That being said, I will not stop making fun of her absolutely LUDICROUS, obstructionist nonsense and shadiness lol, I think that’s the best thing about her. In my head, I have like an entire spin off sequel series running on that’s JUST about the company of light and Valtor during their heyday. There is SO much potential in the dynamic between Faragonda, Griffin and Valtor alone, and that’s BEFORE you add in the aloof, too powerful, had-to-grow-up-fast mystery that is Daphne. Rainbow pls text me back I just wanna talk PLEAS—

it just hit me that bloom is like 15-16 in the first season of winx yet she gets to attend fairy college for some reason. like. alfea is referred to as a college several times (with cloudtower and the specialist school being referred to in a similar manner)... what's that about. also more generally how do you decide how to run a school where the student body is literally made up of students from different planets. what do their history classes look like. are there realms that get more attention than the others? is there a "history of earth fairies" class that bloom takes because she figures she'll be able to pass it pretty easily and then they're talking about shit from 3000 years ago and keep saying things like "the last earth fairy..." meanwhile bloom is like hi. yes. Me. Fairy from earth here. and the professor is like YOU'RE LITERALLY THE ONLY SURVIVOR OF DOMINO'S DESTRUCTION, HAVE SOME NATIONAL PRIDE, THERE R NO EARTH FAIRIES AND THERE IS NO QUEEN OF ENGLAND and then season four rolls around and bloom has Roxy go tell the professor they're an idiot

soooooooo watching kpop demon hunters had me thinking. yknow winx in concert?
Tumblr media
the album that had the winx in a band? well..
Tumblr media
What if the Trix formed a girl group to rival the winx band?
The dynamic between the girls in the movie remind me of the trix but good so it just sounded fun.
Yknow who bobby, their manager, would be?
Tumblr media
Knut.
I can already imagine this.
The Trix see the Winx band on stage on earth from Cloudtower or wherever their home base is, decide to cause some chaos, and form a band of their own, darcy mind controls their fans into liking them, and knut is magically disguised as a human manager.
Right when the Winx see them, they can immediately tell that they're indeed a trio of evil witch sisters from another dimension. Stella and Tecna are watching them like a hawk. Bloom is ready to burn those bitches, Flora has a vine shaped sword at the ready, Aisha has the entire ocean on standby and Musa is this close to cutting the sound on only their song.

Headcanon Cloud Tower.1
Tumblr media
Images and character not my own.
✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍✍
Bianca Blacky.
- A Cloud Tower graduate, she seems to have been a prodigy girl at her old school.
- She became a reporter of the rita skeeter type.
- In my opinion, maybe she likes to know everything because information is power and this can give her many benefits.
- Her powers are based on taking information from others, which means enchantments are her area.
- She can do common incantations that all witches can do, but is probably better at incantations like mind control, forcing people to tell the truth or telling lies.
- She was arrested by the Winx in Solaria.
- If you ask me, I would say she was caught trying to spread lies, fake news or even instigate conflicts between the kingdom of Solaria and some other kingdom.
- She is a lonely witch who works alone, but unlike the other witches, she seems to have no problems or prejudices against humans without magic.
- After all, she is friends with Mitzi, who probably doesn't know she is a witch.
- She must have informants and friends in many places in the magical dimension and must be very influential in the world of magical journalism.

when it comes to the Trix's looks the general fandom interpretation that Stormy is the least feminine style wise out of the Trix continues to baffle me. because there's a lot of things canon is very vague about, but this is one of the few instances where canon is doing the exact opposite and Yet it's still such a common interpretation
to be fair, i think people tend to take her more abrasive louder personality and then draw from it that she should also be the most practically and sporty dress wise in the group and so on
and as a hc it's whatever, it's just really one of those instances where it's clearly the opposite in canon and people seem to genuinely gloss over it, when it's arguably such a funny aspect of her character
Darcy is the one that's always dressed the most practical on top of her hippy inspired fit. she's the only one wearing pants, both in her witch and civillian outfit. (she also knows how to ride a hoverbike for some unexplained reason. which the winx had to slowly learn in s3. some not elaborated skill going on here)
Icy's style moves closer to the preppy, formal ranges, with her collared top - tight skirt - high boots look. the tied back (up) hair also helps. and also the cape. she's got a cape in her witch form, can't stress enough how much of a fashion choice that is on her part
and Stormy's look is just giving summer party. like, it is. you've got a lot of flowy and wrapped fabric, and her open heels (which are a statement piece when your entire power is wind and storms and your signature fighting style consists of rain, lightning, and tornadoes)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
out of them Stormy is dressed the most feminine And impractical at all times. ranging from being completely committed to skirts/dresses to preferring the party club look when her whole bit is hostile weather
actually, it's not even just a Trix thing i think Stormy is just genuinely dressed kind of not occasion appropriate even for a witch in general
this is apparently the general cloudtower/witch fashion
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Stormy pulls up to the wannabe goth convention with her breezy, flowy summer fit with ribbons both on her skirt, top, And on her open toed summer heels. those especially are kind of a bizarre choice on her part, since the predominant fashion trend seems to be boots, ideally pointy. kind of a mix between what Icy and Darcy are wearing. absolutely no one is wearing sandals or even open heels, style wise they're much closer to something Stella or Flora tend to go for even
Stormy is just fully committed to her sunny weather fit which i kind of have to respect
but i'm also mildly intrigued about the why of it? is that her genuine style preference and she just gives absolutely no fucks about what's in or expected witch fashion in general? or is the perpetual good weather fit some inside joke to her with her powers literally being 'bad' weather?
logistically in universe though, would there be some line you shouldn't cross with how much your shoes can look like you bought them from the same store Stella goes to? especially with how image focused and competitive the cloudtower environment seems to be. or would her style just read as completely out of fashion at cloudtower and this is just current fashion trends? we'd never find out because even if people Would have thoughts about it they would definitely not be voicing it to a senior classmate that's one of Griffins top students and can summon actual tornadoes. at that point you really could just do whatever you wanted (which, i mean the Trix already do that)
the take away just ends up being that Stormy clearly doesn't care about a) expected witch fashion, and/or b) what's weather appropriate. and yeah, does fit her character, i think she really would just do whatever she wanted and if that's the ribboned summer shoes that's what it is
(also, sure the flowy ribbons are a kind of funny fashion choice for her, but also, given how wind makes up almost half her powers, they're kind of a good one. those have to be so fun when you're walking or flying around and wind is blowing them everywhere. i get her)

Kael and the Cosmic Guardians
On the Magical Multiverse, many realities exist simultaneously. There is a reality where Music is present anywhere, or technology and magic are one.
Some realities are shiny, others are peaceful, and others are scary...
Earth used to be a reality with magic, until a legion of bad-intentioned Cryptids decided that the fairies had reigned on Earth for far too long, and decided to hunt them down, and any other mythical being who went against their wishes.
Most of the earth fairies went into hiding in a place called Tir Nan Og. And most humans forgot about their existence.
Years later, the council of fairies decides on an arranged marriage between a fairy and the Vampire King as a peace treaty and for fairies to roam freely on Earth again.
The attempt had an effect on the situation, yes, but fairies are far from actually having freedom on Earth.
The peace treaty led to the birth of a fairy/vampire hybrid, Kael, the Sorcerer of the Night.
Kael grew up in a life of terror and fear, surrounded by half-brothers who hated him and the most wicked of fathers.
But now, after years, he finally has the chance to study at the Magix School for Sorcerers!
Nowadays, Red Fountain, Cloudtower, and Alfea all fused into one school, where the students learn negative magic, positive magic and physical combat.
Fairies, Witches, and Specialists are now a thing of the old generation.
Watch as Kael makes friends, learn spells, and faces enemies...
____________________________
So, after seeing @fayflutter 's post-bad-ending AU for Winx Club, I decided to do one for Winx Club as well.
I am actually combinng it with an idea I had a long time ago after seeing people rant on Diabolik Lovers lol.
This AU isn't just a next-gen cause; I am rewriting and changing some stuff about Winx Club, like how the different planets are now realms/realities.
(I am not removing the sci-fi elements, though).
Most of the Winx's adventures from seasons 1-3 are the same. Season 4 didn't happen, though.
The idea of fusing Alfea, Cloudtower, and Red Fountain came from @teawinx 's Roxy Chronicles.
I just decided to also fuse the witches, fairies, and specialists into one group now, just for the plot, and so we can have new types of magic.
The Winxes and all of her generation are the same, though (fairies, witches, or specialists). This change is just for the new generation.
Not enough time has passed for all of the Winx to be mothers.
Flora and Techna work on the new school (which needs a name), and Mirta is the new headmistress.
... And I am using UoW's idea of Bloom and Sky breaking up cause I hate them as a couple :D
I probably won't work much on the AU for now, cause the Hope Hunters and Next Spots are still here, but I may do some art eventually.
Anyway, that's it.

Honestly on a Winx school swap au I'm imagining a alternate universe where through shenanigans Bloom attends Red Fountain, Icy Alfea and Sky Cloudtower
Bloom going for weapons instead of Magic is a fucking mood though I think she'd be a /little/ mad in the 'I discovered a world of Magic only to find out I'm not Magic enough'.
Icy is in hell she's an edgelord surrounded by 'power of friendship' motherfuckers.
Sky as a Witch I'd need to think on more because it's not just changing an alignment like any of the Faerie-Witch swaps it's a whole. Giving him Magic that he's supposed to use and presumably has no underlying issue with is. It changes a chunk of things
