Steven Sinofsky at CES
*Here we have industry veteran Steven Sinofsky visiting CES in Las Vegas for 2020, and his extensive, much-documented, multi-decade point of view is the best CES reportage that I’ve seen this year.  The business about the "fragility" of the smart home is well-observed.
https://medium.learningbyshipping.com/ces2020-primordial-soup-of-innovation-208571f15c94
CES is a show where invention meets innovation — inventions are the ingredients of products, not necessarily products. An innovation is the result of an invention meeting the best execution of product, price, place, and promotion, usually taking many iterations from many companies.
(…)
The remainder of this report looks at 12 different technologies/categories and what I saw.
(…)
Folding Screens: It folds, so now what? 8K TV Is Here: That’s a lot of pixels 5G and WFi 6: So many frequencies! Home Automation: So many nice touches, but… Home Security: Consolidating Health and Monitoring: Watch out! Mobile Phones: Two screens Transportation: So many choices Smart Everything: There’s an app for that Pro Photography/Video: Hybrid! PCs: Pendulum swings back to power Energy: Batteries!
(...)
Going all the way back to universal remote controls that could do magical things like open window blinds through X15 and now ZigBee and others, home automation has been the next big thing at CES for, well, forever. The journey continues.
Every once in a while something new is introduced that will be the technology that brings everything together and allows us to cross into that magical world of the Jetsons. This past two years have all been about Alexa (and to an arguably lesser degree Hey Google). This year the voice efforts were entirely ubiquitous so as to be uninteresting, but the problems have not been solved. If anything the problems continue to compound because nearly every device is getting or is offered with its own microphone and voice controller.
I feel like this year reinforced for me that the journey needs a break. While for techies and people with the time to futz, things can be made to work, the fragility is overwhelming. Unlike say a programmable remote or light switch that doesn’t work, a garage door opener or a sprinkler system that fails becomes a bigger problem requiring immediate attention. Clothes that don’t get cleaned or ovens that don’t turn on can be more than annoying.
This section was supposed to be a look at the marvels of new scenarios — there were plenty of neat new home devices, like entry doors with face recognition built into the door (how’s that for commitment to be around in 30 years?) or a wardrobe screen/mirror that knows what you have in the closet, or a plethora of remote controlled washing appliances. These are all nice and many solve problems people have today, but with a very high cost in a relatively short time.
The problem is homes are designed around a 10–20 year cycle, and tech does not yet work that way. My feeling, especially as I run a home like a laboratory for all this stuff, is that what is really holding everyone back is the focus on retrofitting. We have 75 years of modern homebuilding (thinking of the GE Carousel of Progress!) with codes, replacement parts, and more. Tech isn’t set up like this. Even modern appliances are hugely problematic (why is it that ovens randomly differ by like 1/8” between model years making replacement difficult, or why does when a washing machine break those parts never exist). Add in a tech factor and it gets much worse in much less time.
Some of us will pick one scenario and make it work — doorbells is the breakthrough one (see below). I have a garage door and connected up to Amazon Key and it is amazing. Except it only works half the time when I summon it through HomeKit.
I wanted to pick one example that seems so simple yet illustrates this point — the ubiquitous decora socket. This socket has been a marvel of safety and utility for generations. For a while home automation was suggesting to replace these with CAT5 wiring to lights, and then those homes are left hanging trying to figure out what to do for a remodel that doesn’t involve ripping out all the walls. At least line voltage always works. With USB seemingly taking over powering most everything imaginable (maybe DC and Edison were right!) many of us now have USB in these decora switches. They are easy but a pain to install, probably don’t match the other switches precisely.
Then along comes USB-C. Time to update those. And if you’re not an electrician or live in a rental good luck. Then in a year, along comes USB PD so even those need updating.
These aren’t even for automation, just to connect to stuff. I think the break we need to take is that someone, probably in Korea, is going to start commercial construction from a blank slate (like a forward-looking Carousel of Progress) and rethink how home or more likely offices should be built for automation. It could be that using what’s available today can work, but that will still be a big commitment.
On the lookout for devices that don’t require home construction, this year featured endless Roombas all extolling how smart they were at navigating your home.
(…)
Home Security, perhaps out of a modern but sad need, is an area that in just a couple of years has progressed marvelously. What started off as systems with door and motion detectors and a home base have blossomed into systems that ADT would not have been able to create for 100X the cost. Truly impressive.
CES is a perfect showcase of the integration or bundling/consolidation in the space. There was one startup that made the first smart door lock, taking advantage of Bluetooth, wifi, and the cloud. Many thought this would disrupt the likes of Yale, Schlage, and more (who never even came to CES until locks added radios.) Instead those companies through organic and M&A are leaders in locks now (a great story). Even relatively complex tech like biometrics is making its way into locks. The vulnerability of PINs is driving wave of locks supporting biometrics from all the makers (what is old is new).
But now locks are part of a bigger picture and consumers want integration — apps for locks, alarms, garage, gates, smoke/fire, and more are a ridiculous combination. That is like trying to get a zigbee solution to work or worse to make “automation scenes” work without a professional installer.
The product lines that have emerged, from SimpliSafe to ADT (yes them) and Amazon Ring (and more) are incredible. A huge part of this has been replacing complex integration at the edge over fragile radios with WiFi (when the power profile allows for it).
A great (but hardly only) example of this is the Ring product line, called Ring X. Inventing to integrate into existing infrastructure (24V electronic bells) the product has expanded to a “professional” level that requires (and leverages) homes to be more wired with CAT6. Doing so gets a doorbell, cameras, gate control, and lighting, and more. But this is a remodel. Will this work still in years? It could be because DC current is pretty predictable and likely that connectivity will be wireless down the road. Those choices seem like great bets. If you use more high end WiFi you’ve also experienced the joys of power over ethernet (Ubnt, or Eeero have kits).
Some parts of home security are more acute, like receiving packages. Every year there are new attempts at creating products to enable package delivery to unattended homes. This one made a showing this year and though it requires line voltage provides a viable alternative.
Across all the security systems, cameras themselves are starting to build recognition into the feature set. Many feel this is driven by the China market where these cameras and recognition are ubiquitous (and many devices are made.) It remains to be seen how this will play out globally. Huawei had this demonstration going on which the irony of a US showing of this by them was probably lost in translation. This is the photo above with me in it....

GE Healthcare and Microsoft are bringing a COVID-19 patient monitoring tool to health systems
GE Healthcare is extending its longtime collaboration with Microsoft to launch a cloud-based COVID-19 patient monitoring software for health systems.
GE Healthcare had originally intended to debut its Mural Virtual Care Solution at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society meeting earlier this year. When the COVID-19 epidemic scuttled those plans the company went redesigned the software offering — initially intended to be a new feature for its Edison platform — to focus on a COVID-19 application that could be distributed quickly to hospitals that need it using Microsoft’s Azure Cloud.
GE Healthcare and Microsoft are waiving everything but the installation costs for the software until January 2021, the companies said.
The software is designed to provide a central hub from which hospital staff can monitor patients in intensive care units — including those on medical ventilation.
As Dr. David Rhew, the chief global medical officer of Microsoft noted, the remote monitoring tools could help hospital staff limit their exposure to infected patients and help conserve needed personal protective equipment.
“If you think about what the solution was originally built on it was built on an on-prem solution that would take weeks to install and would take time to set up the servers,” said Rhew. “It clearly is a great way for us to more efficiently monitor… [And] because you don’t need to walk into the room it saves PPE… decreasing that risk… of exposure.”
A Mural installation can monitor a 100-bed, multi-site ICU network with just three senior nurses and two intensivists, according to a company statement. The software collects real-time data from ventilators, existing patient monitoring systems, electronic medical records, labs and other diagnostics into a single surveillance hub, the companies said.
“Facing the daunting outlook of a COVID-19 surge, it is imperative that I and my fellow healthcare workers use virtual ICU technology to safely monitor and care for our sickest patients while preserving PPE,” said Matthias Merkel, M.D., Ph.D., OHSU’s Chief Medical Capacity Officer, Vice Chair of Critical Care Medicine, and Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, in a statement. “Remaining closely connected and supported through technology enables us to progress our patients’ care across a geographic distance that we would otherwise be unable to manage.”

Melvin Feller MA Describes Necessary Life Skills
Melvin Feller is known as “The Entrepreneur’s Mentor” because Melvin walks his talk. Melvin Feller has been there and done that and more importantly, Melvin Feller knows how to transfer the skill set for success. This is main reason that he has been the sought after coach to hundreds of small business owners, entrepreneurs, Realtors, Real estate investors and service professional internationally. Melvin Feller’s main talent is to show you how the step by step process to build and enjoy a successful 6-figure plus business while having a balanced life. Melvin Feller maintains an office in Texas. Melvin Feller is currently pursuing another graduate degree as an MBA.
There are times that you feel driven and motivated, and sometimes you just feel both totally down and like a loser. There are also times when you accomplish amazing things and achieve your goals. And then there are times when you hit roadblocks and face challenges and are unsure if you are even on the right path at all.
Just like what Steve Jobs said in his commencement speech at Stanford, “Sometimes life’s going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.” It is great to understand that life is a series of seasons. You can experience the best the world has to offer in that one moment, and at next, the worst of life can hit you. However, please understand that it is not what you go through that defines you; it is how you deal with the issues.
Remember, it is your choice and your decision that determine your life. It is what you do that makes you, and you are the only one. Therefore, it is imperative that you choose to do the right thing, and that you live a remarkable and meaningful life.
Here are a few suggestions of what you can do when life gets hard.
Understand that things will change
One of the most important keys is to understand that things will never stay the same forever. If you are facing some tough times right now, do not worry because things will never remain the same. After all, It can never rain forever, right? Once the rain is over, the sun will come out and shine. Just endure the challenges, learn from them, and the good times will eventually come.
Study history and you will understand that things will change over time. In addition, look at the stock market, it can never continue to rise, nor can it fall and remain low all the time. It will rebound when the time is right. The same goes for your life. Things may not stay the same for the long-term. However, when you are facing difficult times, understand that they are not here to stay as well.
Change is necessary
Yes, difficult times, challenges, setbacks, failures, and defeats are a necessary process in life. Regardless of whom you are or what you want to accomplish in life, these are common learning experiences that you must pass through. It is a normal occurrence of life.
Take it as a challenge, as a test from God, and as a stepping-stone to your success. How do you think Thomas Edison was able to discover the filament to make the light bulb works? Well, it was through failures. Without failures, there will never be successes. Failures, defeats, and challenges are what contributes to success and achievement. You learn the most when you fail.
In fact, people have learned, achieved, and evolved much more from their failures than their successes. Look at extraordinary people like Elon Musk, Michael Jordan, and Steve Jobs, etc., they were able to achieve outstanding results in life because they went through tough times and learned from their experiences.
Have a positive outlook
This is easier said than done. However, the saying, “Every cloud has a silver lining” is true. You cannot see the positive in the situation because you have not found it yet. Napoleon Hill, the best-selling author of Think and Grow Rich once said, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”
Richard Branson discovered the idea to start an airline because he became stranded in an airport due to his flight being canceled. He was frustrated with the problem, but yet he chose to look from the positive side and he chartered a plane.
Steve Jobs said that dropping out from his college was one of the best things in his life because he had to sit in a class that did not interest him, the same one in which he managed to learn calligraphy of which the Mac uses today.
So look at the problem from a positive point of view and welcome frustration as a learning experience. You know that every problem and difficulty contains an opportunity to learn and grow. Therefore, just face it with courage and a smile.
No such thing as failure, only lessons
From what you have just learned, there are no failures, only lessons to learn. Even if you cannot find the opportunity hidden within the problem, it is all right as long as you treat the failure as a source of feedback and then fail forward.
The problem is that most people choose to look at failure as a defeat rather than a source of feedback and do not learn from it. It does not matter how many times you fall as long as you choose to get up and learn the lesson.
If you are a parent, are you going to stop your baby from trying to walk because she falls? Not at all, in fact, you will encourage her to walk and even teach her the proper way. Therefore, remember the same principle in your life as an adult to learn from your failures.
Focus on what you can control
Sometimes, situations are beyond our control and no matter what we do, we cannot change a thing. Moreover, if you cannot change the situation, why worry? The if you can change it, then just do it.
I know that this is easier said than done, but it is a fact that every one of us must accept. We need to learn to focus on only what we can control. Many times, when a problem occurs, people focus on the problem and are trying to blame or find an excuse to get away from the problem. Do not do this. Instead, choose to focus on the solution.
When you fail to achieve your goal or your target, just learn from the situation and focus on what you can do right now. Stop spending time thinking about the problem, the defeat, or trying to find out whom to blame. Always work on the solution.
God has a better plan for you
Sometimes when life gets hard, you have to realize that God has a better plan for you. I am not saying that you should give up or quit at all, but rather, I am saying that you need to choose to believe that God has something better for you in store. Maybe God wants you to learn something that will change your life for the better forever. Alternatively, maybe God is testing your determination to see if it is something that you truly want. On the other hand, perhaps God is trying to show you another path to achieve something with greater returns. You just need to believe that something better is coming.
When you believe that something better is on the way, you will feel excited and thrilled rather than feeling worried and frustrated. In addition, when you feel good, you will often find the right path or the solution to your problems.
Reignite your motivation
Another important thing that must be done when you are facing hard times in life is to reignite your motivation. While it is true that you cannot solely depend on motivation because it comes and it goes, but sometimes, you need it to go through tough times.
What you can do is to revisit your purpose. Ask yourself why do you do what you do and always remind yourself of your purpose in life. More importantly, you can practice visualization and affirmation to keep yourself driven and to stay on track. Listen to motivational songs and read inspirational materials.
When your level of motivation is high, you will ask better questions even during tough times, such as instead of asking “Why me”, you will begin to say, “Try me”.
Third-party perspective
It will be difficult when you are feeling stuck and looking at your situation from your own point of view which may not help much. Therefore, step out and try to think from a third-person perspective. Look at the situation from another person’s point of view and see if you can find any angle of attack or any other solutions to your challenges.
When you are lost in the jungle, one of the methods to find your direction is to get to a higher ground and look at the place from a bird-eye view. This same strategy should be applied to your life. When you are, feeling lost or facing difficult times in life, step outside of the mess, and then look at the situation from a bigger perspective.
You have to free your mind and think from a different angle. Trying to figure out a way to get out of the labyrinth. However, when you look from the outside, things are much clearer.
Worst-case scenario
Yes, ask yourself what is the worst-case scenario whenever there are hard times. What is the worst that can happen? The reason being you will often find that the worst case is nowhere as bad as you imagined. Once you understand that things are not as bad as you imagined, you will feel calmer and more at peace. This is at the point when you can become creative and make better decisions.
People are often feeling that life is too hard because they are too obsessed with the fears that they imagined in their head, which most likely are not going to happen anyway. Remember, life is hard because many times you are being too rigid or are trying to hold on to something too tightly. It is your attitude of how you look at the situation that determines if your life is going to be hard or easy.
When you understand that the worst is not as bad, and you can still survive regardless of whatever happens, you will feel much better.
Express gratitude
To put it simply, being grateful means showing your appreciation for everything in your life. You need to appreciate whatever you currently have and this act makes you feel good and at peace. Many studies have been conducted on this subject, and they found that when you express gratitude it is one of the keys to living a good life. When you appreciate what you have, you feel wealthy with what you have. When you do not appreciate what you have in life, you feel like you are living in poverty and everything is not enough no matter how much you actually do have.
When life gets hard, write down the things that you are grateful for in life. You can even express your appreciation by calling someone you are grateful for and telling them about it. After doing this, you will discover that the challenges and difficulties you face will become less significant especially when they are compared to everything great that you have in your life right now.
You are not alone
Realize that you are not alone in this world. If you are having tough times with your finances right now, notice that there are others, who are battling even tougher situations than you are. No matter what you go through in life, there is always someone going through the same thing or even worse things than what you are facing currently. Therefore, you are not alone. Because of this, it is not the end of the world. When you feel like a failure, think of someone who has gone through an even more difficult situation than you and those who were able to bounce back even stronger.
A great example for this is the motivational speaker, Les Brown. He has been labeled as “education mentally retarded” since young and has gone through many tough times on his journey to success. He has slept and bathed in his office, before he was rejected and had failed several times, and he bought a house for his mother, but it had to go to foreclosure due to his financial constraints.
As you can see, many people out there have gone through a life that is hard as well. However, these people never give up and they continue moving forward despite going against all the odds. Therefore, learn and become inspired by these extraordinary people.
Share your story
Whenever life gets hard, find someone and share your story. However, be selective and only share your story with someone who will support you and not someone who tries to drag you down. Everyone needs someone by their side from time to time. Nobody can survive alone in this world. This is especially true when you are facing some challenging times and you need the encouragement from others.
You can choose to share your stories with people you know like your friends and family, and with strangers in forums or groups. One very important key to remember is that not everyone will understand your situation and you should not listen to what everyone has to say, especially advice from strangers. Only choose to listen to positive and constructive advice. Otherwise, just ignore this method and choose to do something else.
Focus and thoughts
Whenever you feel like everything is coming down around you, choose to change your focus your thoughts. There is no point to stay at the same stressed and frustrated state. Instead, to choose to do something else that will change your focus instead.
For example, you can play games, go for sports, do something that you like, follow your hobby, jog, swim, read a book, go shopping, watch a movie, and so forth. Whatever you do, you want to switch your focus and take your thoughts away from the situation so that your mind can have time to relax and think it through with your subconscious mind.
After you return to solve the problem, you can now think clearer and there is a higher chance that the solution will come to you from the middle of nowhere.
Stop and reflect
Getting yourself out of a slump is a conscious effort, and this is why you need to stop and reflect on what has happened to you thus far in life. However, if you continue to live life as it is, you will continue to stay at the same point without going any further.
It is when you stop, reflect, and make the necessary changes; you will be able to make sure that you are traveling in the right direction, heading to your desired destination. Most people allow life to happen to them as it is. They never question and they never reflect. As a result, they feel powerless and have no control over what is happening to them.
If you are serious about getting to a higher ground and improving your life, you must take time to reflect. Your previous actions and decisions got you where you are today. Therefore, if you reflect, review and make better choices, you will eventually end up getting to a better place.
When life gets hard, it is a signal telling you that something is not right. Hence, you must reflect on what went wrong and what you can do to course-correct.
Get active
Do you know that exercise can relax your muscle and help release your stress? The University of Florida states that exercise can improve your body image. Living an active lifestyle can make you feel more confident because you feel like you have accomplished something. Not only that, exercise stimulates energy production in your body cell, which makes you energetic and allows your brain to function better.
Write it down
Another thing you can do is to write it down. Yes, you can write down your frustration, worries, anxiety, and stress. In fact, a psychologist from UCLA has proven that an individual may feel less angry or less sad if they put their feelings into words. When you write down your feelings and put them into words, you are activating the prefrontal region of your brain and seeing a reduced response in the amygdala. The amygdala is the vital part of your brain that processes your emotions.
Therefore, the next time when you are feeling stress, life is not proceeding according to your plan or feeling that the world is falling down around you; choose to put your feelings into words. You may feel less emotional.
Ask for help
Rather than sharing your story with someone else, seek help from someone else. When life gets hard, go and get help. You will be amazed that people are more than willing to help you. Of course, getting help from someone is one of the most powerful ways to turn your life around, but how can you do it?
The best way is to get the right help from the right people. For instance, you can seek out the experts within your industry and try to ask for their help. You will never know who will come to the rescue. Or else, find someone who can help you from your own church or community.
Push through it
This is more like an inspiration to you to work through the tough times. When life gets hard, hustle through it. Put in more action, work harder, pour in more effort, and work your way to get out of the seemingly impossible situation.
When you think about it, it is what all the successful people do to achieve extraordinary results in life. No matter what situation or what kind of difficulties they face in their journey, they choose to hustle through it.
Timing may not be right
If you have tried all the above and nothing seems to work, perhaps, you should accept that it might not be the best time to work out the issues you are going through.
Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, started his internet career in 1995. He built the “China Yellow Pages”, but somehow, the people of China were not ready for the internet and Jack had to delay his dream to a later year. He started once again in 1999 and founded Alibaba, the e-commerce giant that dominates the world today.
As you can see, sometimes, the time may not be the right time. Yes, life can be hard when you are trying to go against the movement or when things are not ready. No matter how tough you push, if the market is not ready, there is no way you can create the breakthrough.
Therefore, sometimes you have to accept that the time is not suitable and you may have to come back later. Remember, delaying your dream does not mean giving them up. When Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, the company he started, he was devastated, but he accepted the fate that he was not good enough. He took 3 months off for the holidays and discovered that he still loved what he does. Thus, he went on to found NeXT computer and bought Pixar. Jobs then learned and improved his leadership skills during those years. When he returned to Apple, he became the great visionary leader that brought Apple to prominence.
Perhaps, if Jobs had not been fired, he would never had learned and became the great leader he was and transformed Apple into one of the most successful companies of the decade. Hence, sometimes, you may need to accept that it may not be the right time to strike.
Pray and have faith
One of the easiest things you can do when life gets hard is to pray and have faith that it will turn out all right because of God’s hand. Whatever you do, never underestimate the power of prayer and faith. When you truly believe in a higher power and you pray sincerely, something in you will change. You may feel more relaxed and less stressful because you are letting go and allowing God to take care of the situation for you.
You may start to see miracles and opportunities because you believe that God has created a path for you. So pray and have faith that things will become better no matter how dire the situation.
Perception
Regardless of the situation, you go through in life, whether it is hard, challenging, tough, or the other way round, you have to understand that you are the one who gives meaning to it. Meaning to say, if you think that life is hard, it is because you are making it hard.
How do you define life being hard? For some people, life can be hard. On the other hand, someone can go through the exact same situation and feel nothing at all. It is your perception, my friend. If you think that something is difficult, then yes, it will be difficult for you. However, if you think that something will be easy and life is joyful, then it will be so to you.
How you look at things matter. While it may be a fact that you may feel financially strapped, not having enough money to put food on the table or you are late on your bills, you can still choose how you want to respond to the situation.
Just like how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson puts it, “When life puts you in tough situations, don’t say “Why me”, just say, “Try me! “”
You are the one who is in control of your responses in life. Thus, you are the one who can choose what kind of life you want to go experience. When life gets hard, just increase your level and get stronger.

A History of Your Office Phone
The office phone is an underestimated tool that business owners and employees probably don’t put much thought into. Due to advances in cloud computing and increased access to communication tools, we use the office phone every day without much thought about how it became such an integral part of our business communications. To get a better understanding of this, let’s start at the beginning. Humans have been communicating since the dawn of time; whether through sounds or images. If you’re familiar with the history of telephones, then you know that Alexander Graham Bell was the one who invented the telephone on 1876 and successfully executed the first bi-directional transmission of clear speech, but the way office phones operated and looked has seen its highs and lows. In the years after Bell’s invention, telephone switchboards were used to connect two parties so that they can communicate. Telephone lines were already connecting individuals in Massachusetts by 1877 and a phone call meant using a switchboard that required an operator to manually connect the two callers using a panel of jacks and wires. In the beginning, people were using phones that were made of wood and hand-cranked; then, Bell made some much needed improvements to the telephone and introduced the candlestick telephone, we can imagine this as an office phone sitting upright on the desk. In 1878, two years after the telephone switchboard exchange was invented, the first commercial North American telephone exchange opened in Connecticut. Although the first North American telephone exchange was designed and built by George W. Coy, it was actually Thomas Edison and Tivadar Puskas who initially proposed the idea of a telephone exchange which was then built by the Bell Telephone Company in 1877 and inspired future designs. With this new communication technology taking hold of the country, switchboards were increasing in size and eventually had to be separated so that multiple operators could handle the switchboards. As a result, there was a conversion to a Panel Machine Switching System in the 1920s, which was an early type of automatic telephone exchange that eliminated the need for multiple switchboards. Almon Strowger further pushed the development of communication and the office phone in 1892 with the invention of the rotary dial telephone, advertised as “one of the answers to the modern cry for greater efficiency in everything.” The first installation was in 1892 and shared the telephone market with the candlestick until the 1930s. The rotary dial telephone remained a popular choice as a home and office phone until the 1960s. In 1951 the first direct dialing distance service was implemented in New Jersey, which allowed a caller to call any other user outside of the local calling area without operator assistance. At this time, there were only 11 cities that were able to dial using an area code and seven digits. Modems started being used in 1958 for direct connection by way of phone lines which were used to transmit and decode digital data. The introduction of modems eventually led to the introduction of echo cancellation, broadband, radio, and our beloved Wi-Fi. As cell phone electronics were being developed in the 1960s, push button phones were replacing the rotary dial phones. The office phone was now easier to use and with answering machine technology gaining popularity, people’s behavior when it came to communicating was changing. Early versions of VoIP were being explored in the 1970s for improved circuit redundancy and network availability in the event of infrastructure failures, since circuit-switched networks were more vulnerable to failure. Regardless of this idea, the circuit switched network remains at the center of infrastructures. For the next two decades, advances were made that lead up to the creation of the Asterisk Private Branch Exchange and what we know today as the modern office phone system. Office Phone Systems of Today There’s no doubt that office phone systems have seen monumental changes throughout the decades. Although the way we communicate has evolved to meet growing demand, our need as people to communicate with one another will never disappear. POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), also referred to as Analog, was the standard service offered by telephone companies from the year Bell invented the phone in 1876 to 1988. Today, there are several options for office phone systems, including hosted PBX, IP PBX, and mobile solutions. Today’s office phone systems are much more convenient and can even centralize your business communications without much tech experience. If your office phone systems aren’t allowing you to stay in touch with the people most important to your businesses success (i.e. customers, employees, and partners) then how can you expect your business to grow? If you’re looking for robust and easy-to-use office phone systems for your small business, rest assured that there are practical choices for your business communications and getting all the right components to meet your unique demands and needs.

The office phone is an underestimated tool that business owners and employees probably don’t put much thought into. “That’s right! That’s what’s important, my new cookbook. And my husband, and my family, and making a perfect home. It’s a lesson every gal needs to learn, especially you.” – Bobbie Markowitz, “The Stepford Wives,” Paramount, 2004

Mixed in among the really important stuff like drones, smartphones, laptops, entertainment systems, VR headsets, cars; CES has got to be the biggest congregation of tech toys you’ll find– except maybe the Hong Kong Toy Fair.
I’d love to buy a lot of it for my kid so I could enjoy it.
Then, there’s the stuff hyped for the Millennial mom and kid.
I wonder how in heck we raised two reasonably normal kids.
We had them, took them home without an instruction/operator’s manual and fumbled through the process of raising them, faking most of it; and damn …. they survived!
However, today, in our increasingly connected world; there’s a barrage of new technology being added to tried and true solutions that seems to say, “This will ensure you can maintain your busy professional/home lifestyle and raise a happier, more advanced child that is ready to face the challenges of the world he or she will inherit.”
CES Collection – Folks are developing a lot of overly connected things for millennial females to maybe make them think they’re doing the mom thing, right? Like (l-r) on-the-go breast pump, preparation for college baby bed and really useful Legos you can program and make robots.
Times have changed and Millennial moms obviously must need certain things like:
–        Pregnancy monitor on the stomach (my wife hollered at me)
–        Milking machine
–        A $1,100 bed to keep the little tyke happy
–        Diaper devices that tell you the kid has done something normal
–        Tablet-mounted stationary trike so the kid can experience new trails
–        Spy cameras to track him/her in their room
–        Legos that let the kid practice programming early (now that I think is cool in our digital world)
–        Toys that talk to them and feed family info back to somebody’s cloud
–        Other really expensive stuff we couldn’t afford when we started our family.
Even though GjK reported that less than nine percent of baby products sold last year were “tech,” parenting blog, The Bump, found 76 percent of moms consider technology an important feature they look for so, who am I to knock it?
Millennials are now the biggest target segment for marketers; and well, kids have kids.
Of the 80 million Millennials in the U.S., one-quarter are parents. Or, put a different way, 83 percent of new moms are Millennials, so the market is rather large.
Most of them are the household CFO (chief financial officer), which means they have tremendous spending power ($200B). So, she’s rather important to you; whether you’re selling stuff for the kid, for the home or just about anything that you market to families.
Smart Parents – Millennials are today’s prime audience to reach and sell to. And they’re the ones most in tune with IoT, smart stuff and augmented intelligence. It’s all good if only it all really worked together without the user having to study real hard.
They’re a lot like their (your) mom with traditional values and lifestyles. They’re ambitious/determined and take pride in handling all aspects of their lives including raising kids, managing the household, building a career and maintaining awareness about the world around them.
Understanding Her
But, according to Carat research, they’re also different.
Sixty-seven percent are multicultural (half Hispanic, most bilingual), four in 10 are single parents, often live in multi-generational households and are the main wage earners for the kids.
As powerful as they are with their influence, more than a quarter of them told researchers at Fluent that they seldom or never received marketing messages specifically directed to women.
Whether they receive a gender-specific or neutral message (or are in the market for something), they check online customer reviews and browse products online before heading to the store.
Online First – When today’s females consider buying anything, the first thing they do is go online to learn everything possible about the product, the company, quality and support as well as where the price is. If it’s a “fair trade,” they’ll share their information with you.
They are somewhat more likely to follow brands on social media and sign up for email marketing news than their moms.
Regardless of their income, BabyCenter found that 66 percent are tightfisted in their spending so a smart stroller with headlights, phone charger, distance monitoring and similar “features” might not be high on their gotta’ buy lists.
To maximize their budget, they constantly go online for their research and, according to Edison Research, eight in 10 use their smartphones continuously. Research Now found that they use the phone in-store and outside and that most (75.2 percent) search for the best possible price.
Smart Shoppers – Today’s female is smarter than a lot of male marketers seem to think. Sure, they like a bargain, but a bad bargain just isn’t something she’s willing to risk.
Six in 10 download mobile coupons, while seven in 10 “always look for special offers or hold off buying until they are on sale.”
However, even in lower-income households, they don’t simply snap up the cheapest product because they’re concerned it might be a dud. So, they shop intelligently and thoroughly doing plenty of research before they buy something.
So, they’re very tech savvy!
According to a recent Nielsen report, while working mothers have the most access to these devices and platforms, stay-at-home mothers have more of a penchant for them.
There are 25.1 million females in the U.S. who are between the ages of 18 and 49 and have one or more child under the age of 12. Almost three quarters of them are in the work force.
The one issue I have with most of the Millennial mom research is that they divide the group into working moms and stay-at-home moms. Seriously? I think they both work!
I sure wouldn’t want the job!
But I’ll use the industry’s breakdown so the percentage of working moms increases with age: About 71 percent of moms 18-34 are working, whereas 77 percent of moms 35-49 are working.
Tools of the Trade – Being a mother, whether it’s one that spends full time at home or one that juggles two careers (office/home), women use today’s communications tools to stay abreast of the world around them and to contact friends/family.
Mothers who work outside the home tend to use their devices more than stay-at-home moms. Working mothers also tend to be more affluent and highly educated, and are therefore more likely to live in high-tech homes.
Compared with stay-at-home mothers, working moms are more likely to own technology across the multimedia board. This includes 98, 80, and 74 percent for smartphones, tablets and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) respectively.
Stay-at-home moms use their technology and consume content differently.
While they may have fewer devices, stay-at-home mothers use them for longer periods than working moms.
Devices – We found it counter intuitive that the stay-at-home mom used all of their devices more frequently.
Obviously, out-of-home working moms do more non-live TV viewing using DVRs and SVOD services. But both feel these options are more of a convenience than a necessity.
Stay-at-home moms tend to also use their PCs, smartphones and tablets more than those who work outside the home.
They want the best for their kids – everyone wants things better for their kids than they had – but I’m not certain she’s getting a fair shake in the deal.
According to the APA (American Psychological Association), Millennials are more stressed than earlier generations and women even more so.
Juggling Workload – When working moms have an enlightened employer, they often set aside certain days when they can work from home and juggle office work and children.
They juggle work, family, money, bills and now the industry lays on the unsaid concern that they aren’t giving their kids technology fast enough so they can be prepared for their future.
They have a higher overall stress level than their partner or parents, especially when it comes to money.
The gender stress gap is most notable in recent years, when women reported their stress at 5.5 and men at 5.3. A couple of years ago, those numbers were much farther apart, at 5.2 and 4.5, respectively, and men’s stress was going down at a faster rate.
Throw kids into the equation and the problem becomes even worse.
Beyond the Sale
The challenge seems to be that company and organization management still fails to appreciate and address the issues as well as their importance and contributions in business of business.
In today’s work-life economy, businesses have a difficult time adjusting their support to women who want to grow, exceed in their careers and then go to their second job of household management, child care and stuff.
Even Sheryl Sandberg, of Facebook and Lean In, has said balancing family and job isn’t easy.
Stress – I’m not quite certain why stress has decreased over time; but the APA says it’s dropping. However, women seem to have more than their share.
Unfortunately, most marketers (guys) view them as sales targets rather than understanding the whole woman and appealing to her wants/needs:
–        Being a Millennial mom is a tough, challenging, complex job. In our increasingly complex, dangerous always-on world; they want to be both free but have peace of mind.
–        They’re constantly bombarded with new studies/facts on nutrition, education, physical fitness and work guidelines; and every one of them swears to gawd they are the definitive answer rather than “you’re doing a good job and we’ll help you along the way.”
–        According to the Connell Partners’ Millennial Mom Project, two in five feel the pressure of having their life and family all together and use social media as an outlet to share problems, issues and imperfections. That’s why ads show Millennial women come in different shapes/sizes; and leaving a project early to catch a kid’s game is a good thing
–        Growing up, they were constantly told they were an individual/original; but at work and at home, they’re expected to fit a pre-conceived mold.
Perhaps before we start viewing Millennial moms as sales targets we should view them as productive members of the global community, which means equal treatment–including pay.
Pay Inequality – Most firms today at least recognize that equal pay for equal work is simply the right thing to do and progress is being made. Someday (soon, we hope), individuals working side-by-side will be paid the same.
That seems to be a slow process. The Lean In Organization reported last year that women will achieve pay equality in 100 years … that’s like a bunch of generations!
Women not only get less pay (overall) than their male counterparts in most positions, it turns out that having a child could be a poor career move, according to a recent report by the American Sociological Review.
Motherhood Penalty
The journal’s study aptly called it a “motherhood penalty” of four percent per child. And if she happens to be a highly-skilled, highly-paid employee; that penalty climbs to 10 percent per child.
As if that weren’t bad enough, according to the Center for Work-Life policy, these prime marketing targets often drop out of the working environment entirely after a few years because they don’t get adequate maternity leave. Note: the U.S. is the only country in the developed world that doesn’t offer government-mandated paid maternity leave.
They also depart the workforce because they don’t have enough flexibility in dealing with their dual home/work careers.
Damn!
Of course, the obvious answer is to get the Stepford gals to help them. You know as Bobbie Markowitz noted, “And you’re selfish! You wanna rule the world! I can fix you. I can change you.”
Or, instead of just viewing them as marketing targets, we could think of them as part of the team that keeps businesses working.

Essay #4 Technology in Today’s Workplace
“Technology is a body of knowledge devoted to creating tools, processing actions and extracting of  materials.” (Karehka) There has always been a need for faster processing, less errors, and mobility in the workplace. The introduction of computers, cellphones and tablets helped to meet those needs, however these devices have also created undesirable side effects. These devices can help us accomplish so much in a short period of time, yet we abuse them. Technology took the world by storm though these three stand out most and were so innovative that no one cared to think about the effects these devices would have on our everyday lives. Imagine being an accountant 50 years ago, when everything was done long hand. Today, we can process vast amounts of numbers and other information easily thanks to technology, though it still creates controversy. Computers, cellphones, and tablets have changed how many professionals conduct themselves in the workplace. If utilized properly, technology can lead to a much more productive work environment, but if not, they can be an employee’s and a business’ own downfall. This paper will discuss the historical causes and effects of technology in the workplace and the ideal solution to certain main technological problems, and the controversies they created. Everything has a cause and effect. A cause is a need that has to be met and the effect is the outcome of the new idea after it’s put into action. Technology is a prime example of this. For instance, I interviewed with my friend John for this paper. He informed me he needed a new cellphone with better cellular signal so he could get in touch with his boss in case of an emergency while working. A few weeks ago, he met that need by joining Sprint and getting the new iPhone. John now has better cellular signal at work and can use his phone in case of an emergency, but he can now access Facebook, Twitter and Instagram anytime he wants which, in effect, causes him to get distracted and fall off task. (Hill) There were needs for faster processing, less errors, and mobility in the workplace; the introduction of computers, cellphones and tablet met those needs though also creating undesirable side effects. The biggest technological invention was the computer. Before computers, large sums of numbers where figured out by hand or using an abacus. The computer was first developed to be a high speed calculating machine, which allowed for a huge step forward in scientific research. Computers were designed to meet a need for a faster processor. It took about a decade for the computer to be utilized and exploited for business purposes. (Browne) Though computers were initially created to help with scientific research, they have become a big part of business and improved how tasks are accomplished. We have become so dependent on technology, it’s difficult to imagine how such tasks were completed before the invention of the computer. Today, computers are widely used in the process of graphic designing. According to an online article, What Is Graphic Design, “Graphic design, is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content.” (Cezzar) Savio, a colleague of mine, has a job where he is constantly using his computer for graphic designing. He is the Store Designer and Visual Merchandise Manager for Sugarfina, a luxury candy boutique. With graphic design programs such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Savio is able to design all the Sugarfina boutiques on his computer and then email his plans to contractors who are then able to build his vision. The need for mobility led to the creation of the laptop which paved the way for the transition from bulky computers to mobile workstations. Savio has to travel all over the country and Canada for his job and must be able to access his blueprints via his laptop from anywhere at any time. Mobility is so important in today’s job market that it has become an essential requirement for someone seeking a new job. However, with all pros come cons. Computers and laptops have changed the way many professionals complete a task. A wide range of professionals ranging from carpenters to doctors, use computers and they have become a vital tool in everyday task execution. Though computers help with so much, they also have caused many problems. According to another online article, “Technology demands attention. The time saving advantages are often outweighed by the constant distractions.” (Markovich) With the internet, video chatting and so much information at our finger tips, how could we not get distracted? At work, it is easy for our minds to wonder off after working on something tedious. With the amount of information accessible on our work computers and laptops, why would our minds not wonder off and think about what’s happening on social media? Sometimes checking out of work and checking social media can help clear the mind, but if done regularly it can cause a problem. With most daily job duties requiring a computer or laptop now, it is up to us to show self-discipline to stay focused on tasks at hand. Though computers and laptops were the first of many technological bomb shells that changed the way tasks get completed we must not let them deter us from getting our job done effectively, efficiently while staying accountable. Another technological bomb shell was the cellphone, which quickly evolved into the smart phone. The first stage of the cell phone was known as a car phone because it was too big to carry around and remained in the car. Later in the 80’s, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x arrived on the market which was truly considered to be the first mobile phone. (Ray) Today we can do so much more than just talk on our cellphones. With constant access to the internet, we can check our bank accounts, place a Starbucks order, and even order an Uber with a simple tap. They have changed the world and the way we do business. In the U.S. alone, there are more than 100 million iPhones in use. Field agents for many companies have a great need for iPhones or other cell phones in their line of work because they travel so much. Being on the road all the time really makes it difficult to know what’s going on at other places or even what needs to be done. Cell phones have really helped with the communication process. One company for example is CN Utility Consulting, a company contracted out by Edison to control vegetation around power lines in Southern California. Most of CN Utilities’s employees work in various parts of SoCal and each have grids that they maintain. This keeps them on the road and out of the office on a regular basis. These employees are given tablets, cars and iPhones to help maintain their grids. Since they are all traveling and on different schedules, conference calls are held weekly to discuss safety concerns and discuss important issues as a team. Field agents had a vital need for a device that allows for better communication when out in the field and the cellphone met that need. Cell phones have greatly accommodated mobility more than laptops, and like the laptops, they also have come with some undesirable side effects. The convenience with cell phones is that they are mobile and so much is accessible from almost anywhere. This also happens to be a disadvantage because they can easily become such a distraction. “Cell phones for the most part are no longer productivity tools in business, but rather a major distraction. The promise that they would increase employee productivity has died, but the addiction remains.” (Moltz) So many people are addicted to updating Facebook status, checking twitter feeds and liking pictures on Instagram that devices and what social media unlocks is taking precedence before something that could be more empowering. Going back to my discussion with John, he told me that he previously read a lot in his spare time at work and now, with better cellular signal, he's not reading as much. (Hill) Being a distraction is a huge negative effect with cellphones. Cellphones have become such a vital piece of everyday life but, like laptop computers, they can end up controlling us if they are not properly utilized. Last but not least is the tablet. Tablets were created to fill the need of a device bigger than a cellphone though smaller than a computer. Though tablets have been in circulation since the 80’s, they didn't really take off until the introduction of the iPad in 2010. From the Linus write top tablet in 1987 to 2016’s unveiling of the iPad Pro, tablets have become quite innovative and in some professions, a key tool in everyday tasks. The top features of a tablet is their portability and how diverse the software applications are. Portability and mobility are very crucial in today’s job market. The tablet opened a whole new vista of opportunities because of its size and capability. Today, sales reps in particular have really utilized the power of tablets. For example, before tablets, most sales reps had to either write down orders longhand and make sure they were delivered to the office, or carry around a bulky laptop bag all day visiting their accounts. Now, most companies have switched their reps to tablets and with a few swipes and taps, their orders are placed and sent to the office.  With most companies switching from computers to tablets in various departments, other forms of distractions were created which ended up hurting employee work ethic. Tablets have again changed the way we do business just as computers and cell phones have. Today, all three devices of technology are key factors in the way orders are placed, prescriptions are filled and so much more. Even though these devices have enhanced the way that we compete tasks, they have also deterred us from really being able to stay focused.   Like anything else, there’s a downside to using and relying on technology. Uses  of computers, cellphones and tablets, at any age, can leave one prone to the unfortunate side effect of loss of interpersonal communication skills. From the article, The Disadvantages of Technology in the Workplace, “interpersonal communications, critical to building business relationships, are more complicated and require courtesies and listening skills not necessary in social media. Too much reliance on electronic methods of communication not only can increase unnecessary traffic [distractions], but can decrease vital personal interaction.” (Nestor-Harper) Today we are taught to communicate through a device instead of face-to-face, personal communication. Even though our future is progressing rapidly in the digital age, face-to-face communication is still very important. Face-to-face communication is more effective and has certain advantages such as nonverbal cues, touch, and the ability to read body language. Since interpersonal skills are diminishing, we need to make sure the foundation to hold a decent conversation is instilled in future generations. Family dinner is an example of a great platform to build communication skills. During this time, all members of the family should be required to interact with one another including discussing problems and events of their daily lives while leaving devices away from the table. This instills a value, that you can’t always hide behind a device and also helps with building interpersonal skills early on in life. Even though we use technology and media for just about everything now, the simple ability to communicate with out a device is timeless. The purpose of innovative technology is to create more effective and stream lined methods to complete tasks so more can get accomplished during business hours. While technology has certainly helped with the completion of tasks, it has also causes a side effect of laziness. Employees feel that they can slack off and then rely on technology to get the task done when it comes down to crunch time. According to Karehka Ramey, a journalist, “Simple tasks like calculating sales and tracking inventory are being done with computers, so you will find that employees do not put their brains at work, they can’t solve high-end business problems because a computer or software will do it with no challenge.” (Karehka) This is an example of how technology has transformed that way we do business, but there is more to just using a device. No one really thinks about additional costs when buying a new computer, cell phone, or tablet. A new device can be quite costly, and people think it just stops at checkout. That simply is not the case. Additional costs include upkeep, insurance and protection costs over the lifetime of the device. If you plan on replacing your device often, there is no need to invest in the additional costs; though if you want your device to last, you will have to invest in keeping the device(s) maintained and protected. Insurance should always be bought for higher end devices, not to mention accessories needed for daily use. “Many small businesses can not afford the cost of hiring a full-time technical person, so they resort to monthly tech contractors who charge them for work done. If business technology tools like computers are not well maintained, their performance will decrease and the process of buying new computers or any other business technology can even be more expensive.” (Karehka) Keeping these devices maintained and is just another thing for an employer to worry about. Not only do you have to worry about the upkeep of a device but you also have to factor in how fast technology is upgrading and how rapidly systems and software are progressing. With these constant upgrades, employees have to take time to learn what’s new, which can take away from valuable work related hours. “Technology is constantly being improved, which requires constant and costly upgrading. Each upgrade requires employee training, taking time away from production. The loss of productivity, combined with costs of software and implementation can reduce overall profitability. Each upgrade may also lower morale as employees struggle to learn new applications and to meet new performance standards.” (Nestor-Harper) Anything that takes away from productivity hours is not desirable. This also affects the age group that companies look for during the hiring process because companies want employees who can keep up with the technological times. The hiring of post undergraduate students and millennials reached an all-time high. This ended up creating another big controversial issue surrounding technology. With the hiring process discriminating against older generations, the age discrimination act of 1967 was added to the equal employment act of 1965. This meant that employees would not be discriminated against or terminated because of age, race, sexual orientation, gender, creed or religion. This gives all of those entering a new workplace an equal chance in the hiring process. Security is a very big factor in technology, not to mention a major downfall.  There are vast amounts of personal information on our devices and sometimes we fail to think twice about it. From passwords stored in our notes to personal information we entrust to companies, technology and security need to always work together. For example, Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in her Paris apartment because she posted a video on Snapchat of herself alone at 2am while showing off her 4.5-million-dollar ring. If Kim was more careful with her presentation on social media and more vigilant about her security, the robbery could of been avoided. It may not be convenient to worry about security and privacy while keeping up with technological trends, but for your own personal safety, it is an important factor to consider. Everyone is prone to distractions and, unfortunately, technology is the biggest distraction of them all. With apps, websites and ways of concealing what you're doing on devices, procrastinating tasks and distracting yourself to make time pass is easier than ever. According to The Huffington Post, “Gloria Mark, a professor who studies digital distraction at the University of California, Irvine told the Journal that between digital and human factors, there’s typically only three minutes of consistent focus before an employee gets interrupted (or self-interrupts). Mark pointed to studies that have shown it might be 23 minutes before a worker gets back to whatever task he was completing before the interruption occurred.” (Bindley) “In addition to costing employees time, distractions cost companies money. A survey released in 2011 found that businesses might lose more than $10 million a year — or more than $10,000 per employee — thanks to distractions and poorly designed technology, Fox News reported at the time. Of the 515 people who took the survey, 45 percent reported working interruption-free for 15 minutes at a time, or less. And for 53 percent of respondents, at least an hour a day was taken up by various interruptions.” (Bindley) These studies prove that employees are getting distracted and the sad thing is we've all done it and will continue to do it. Giant corporations have implemented all these technological innovations to speed up the working process but these studies also show that more needs to be done. The internet, in particular, is quite an amazing resource but also a huge distraction. According to a contributor to Business News Daily, “Although the internet is essential for many of today's workers, having that access can still be a double-edged sword.” (Jennifer) The internet holds vast amounts of information and can be accessed so easily that it has made dictionaries, encyclopedias and how-to books basically obsolete. though we don't utilize it properly. The internet can be a giant distraction, but in most professional environments there are firewalls in place so non-work related sites can’t be accessed. This creates a whole new set of problems and controversies that are explained later in this essay. Conflicts about devices at work and access to the internet during business hours can be avoided if employees utilize their time properly and practice self-control. It’s not going to be easy, and will take time. Even the boss enjoys the ability to check social media. We are all affected by and have to use technology today, whether we like it or not. Millennials’, and future generations to come need to learn self-control when it comes to being distracted by devices. Learning the self-restraint to stay on task is crucial now more than ever. It’s a necessary lesson that needs to be learned if we want to master technology and not let it master us. This is vital, must be understood, taught and reinforced or moving forward in workplace innovation, competency and interactive communication will become things of the past. We can work to resolve this issue together.
Technology has innovated the workplace endlessly and created a whole new era of how work can be accomplished. With tasks efficacy climbing, we have to remain focused on the tasks at hand and not get distracted by the internet or social media sites like Facebook or Snapchat. With technology comes responsibility. Upkeep, maintaining devices and keeping security and privacy up to par is important. Don't let technology control you. Technology is our present and future but if we don't find the proper balance it will be our downfall. Computers, cellphones, and tablets have changed how many professionals conduct themselves in the workplace and if utilized properly, they can really lead to a much more productive work environment. The biggest controversy about technology is that it’s a great resource used to complete tasks, communicate effectively, and even nurture creativity. However, there is also the distraction aspect. The modern world has a constant need a faster processor, higher efficiency, and mobility in the workplace. Computers, cellphones and tablets meet those needs. Discussed earlier in this paper, is technology is mastering us or are we mastering it? Think about all the technological innovations over the years and how much has changed. Technology has catapulted us into the future while also creating some not so desirable side effects. From the loss of interpersonal communication skills and laziness to the high associated costs, technology is not all it’s cracked up to be. With technology comes responsibility and includes the way you manage your time and the upkeep of the device. To master technology the users must know when it’s time to get serious. These three devices all have had a cause and effect in the workplace and the world. Computers met the need for a faster processor; cellphones the need for better communication; and tablets the need for better mobility. Each was designed and allocated to meet specific needs, though close to obliterating interpersonal skills and costing a lot to maintain.  Today, companies thrive on these and many other devices but they are also hurting them from the inside out. From the distraction caused by social media to additional training on the devices, some would say it just makes things more complicated. Others would argue that checking social media is a nice mental break before returning to work. There has been so much controversy shrouding technology, though not as much as the controversial discussions surrounding technology and certain devices placed in the workplace. Computers, laptops, cellphones and tablets became so innovative in business and so many other professional fields that CEO's and managers just ran with the growing trends. Computers provide fastest processing, cellphones are great for communication and tablets are simply the best for portability and mobility. Are the effects seen such as growing distractions and more time training really worth it? These effects and the fact that the devices were implemented so forcefully has caused a lot of tension. Companies are competing for better performance numbers than their competition really pushed for the advantages technology provided and now we're stuck in the technological era whether we like it or not. Yes, we needed such implementation for better performance in workplace but now some companies want to pull back on technological advances because they realized it's ultimately hurting their profit margins. Pulling back on devices at work and implementing "parental controls," just created a whole new window of tension. I will elaborate on the controversy surrounding these "parental controls," Later in this paper.  We must be the ones to master technology, not vice versa. Technology is on the rise. CEO’s, sole proprietors, and managers have been trying to figure out how to keep employees on task and motivated while using technology during business hours. Thanks to monitoring software such Web Watcher, designed to track key strokes, save messages and monitor location, keeping an employee on task is easier today but has also creating some controversy. Once the needs were met by computers, cellphones and tablets in the workplace, a new need arose. The need to monitor what an employee is doing during business hours and on company issued devices has become crucial. According to an article online and few other sources;           “Electronic monitoring is defined as "the computerized collection, storage, analysis, and reporting of information about employees' productive activities" (Office of Technology Assessment, 1987, p. 27). "Currently, as many as 26 million workers in the United States are monitored in their jobs, and this number will increase as computers are used more and more within companies" (DeTienne, 1993, p. 33). Of those monitored, 10 million have their work evaluated and pay based on the data collected (DeTienne, 1993) (Mishra) With electronic monitoring in place, mangers hope that their employees will think twice before getting off task. There are many different types of programs and systems available for online monitoring, including Web Watcher and Inter Guard. These programs track virtually everything including keystrokes, location, web history, messages, and more. These programs are downloaded onto company issued devices or personal devices that are used for work related matters. Systems that monitor devices are always running in the background of a device which encrypts the data, sending it to the one who implemented the program for review. Created to build a more focused work environment, electronic monitoring programs are still the best form of attack. Even though digital monitoring programs are on the rise and put in place by so many major companies, there remain some controversial issues shrouding them. Some companies issue devices to employees while others allow an employee to use their own devices.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            While employees prefer to use their own devices, there remains an issue with installing the monitoring and management programs on their non-company devices. The reason being that if the device is lost, all work related data can be erased, though this erases all data on the phone and not just the work related information. These programs not only allow an employer to view an employee’s messages, web history and keystrokes, business and personal, employers can fully access devices, remotely, without the knowledge of the employee. (Sweeny) Devices, both personal and business, have been erased without the user’s knowledge due to human resource departments resulting in precious, irretrievable data being lost. These programs are used in a variety of ways to monitor an employee and is surrounded by controversies because of gray areas in the law. These programs are put into place so CEO’s and managers know that they are getting the best of their employees during business hours. Web Watcher and Inter Guard can let an employer track how long breaks are lasting, how often the restroom is used, words and error per minute and how jobs are completed per day. These programs will allow an employer to view messages sent and how much time is spent online or off task. Employers want to know that employees are maximizing time and keeping focused on work related items during business hours. Unfortunately, being Big Brother is what is needed to keep employees on task.  Many employees will argue that checking social media, messaging a loved one or reading a blog while at work is a nice mental break during business hours. This helps to keep motivated and serves as a refresher to finish the day out strong. Though employers want to keep employees motivated, they prefer other methods to build up office motivation. An employee who gets too used to checking Facebook or updating Twitter while at work can really slack on showing high performance and that is the last thing that an employer wants. Electronic monitoring systems are a must in today technological day and age. Unless on break, ultimately company time is company time and employees are paid to remain on task, not to send personal messages or update personal social media. Companies should install monitoring programs if they are the ones issuing the device but should not install monitoring software on their employee’s personal devices. If companies provide devices for an employee, the gray area is eliminated. All devices are monitored and are for work purposes only. Using personal devices for work purposes is convenient but it also complicates a work relationship with an employer. There should always be checks and balances in place to make sure employees and employers are utilizing business hours effectively. Work is a place of seriousness, responsibility and duty. Employees should remember that and stay faithful to the task they're being paid to complete. Even though all employees may feel like they've hit a wall and would like a refresher while working, that is not an excuse to violate the proper place or time to misuse technology. Devices such as computers, cellphones and tablets should be used for work during business hours and personal during non-business hours. So many employees want to muddy up how technology is used during business hours and it’s created so much controversy and mistrust in the workplace. Though a lot of tension can be created when Big Brother is watching, like Inter Guard in today’s work environment, it is a must to keep all those employed accountable. Technology has revolutionized the workplace but we need to question how helpful it has actually been. Some would argue that the pros outweigh the cons, but many would argue for the other side. For all companies and small businesses, it all comes down to the bottom line and how much of a profit is being made. Though some employees misuse computers, cellphones and tablets, many do not and strictly use them for work purposes. If all employees utilized technology properly, we would have a much more productive work environment. Employees of this technological era need to know what it's time to knuckle down and get to work. Though these three devices met many needs vital to propel the workplace and the world into the 21st century, they have also created some undesirable consequences. From loss of interpersonal skills to additional training needed, companies and many small businesses are trying very hard to find the proper solutions surrounding the problems with technology without creating additional controversies. These solutions included implementing electronic monitoring programs, only hiring those who are technology savvy plus a few more. Many employees feel that programs like Inter Guard violate an employee’s privacy and the Equal Employment act later fought against discrimination to employees of older generations. Technology, especially computers, cellphones and tablets, are constant changing. While they are innovative, they are always creating new issues while tackling a few issues along the way. Whether we like it or not, technology is our future and we must learn how to use it responsibly. If we do not, it will be our downfall. Don’t let technology control you!
