A Daring Rescue

Impact blinked awake as he heard the door to his cell opened. He quickly closed his eyes and hoped that his captor hadn't realized he was awake (he wouldn't be able to deal with one more season to 'make sure he didn't escape', not right now at least, his arm still hurt from the last round).

When he felt a hand touching his face, he did his best to remain un-tense, as if he did, he would be hurt again.

"Impact?" Said a voice, a-a vod's voice.

Opening his eyes in surprise, Impact came face to face with two vode, Coric (who was kneeling in front of him) and, if he wasn't mistaken from the times he tried to spend time with the Torrent, Denal (who was near the door).

*blinks awake slowly in his bunk, having been sent back to the barracks by Coric to continue to rest, waving away Redeye’s panic with a heavy arm* ...huh?

Oh, ‘s fine... just make sure they don’t mess with the calibration... Fives fixed that perfectly for me last time, and I don’t wanna bug him to change it again...

I wouldn’t tell Rex, vod, don’t w-worry... *sneezes into his elbow, looking a little embarrassed before glancing back at his blaster with interest* ... so what’re they doing? Any cool upgrades I should know about?

Ghosts || The Bad Batch x Reader AU

Summary: A personal AU of mine where Hunter can see ghosts based on the idea that animals can see spirits when humans can't. Reader is the former medic of the 501st.

Warnings: Mentions of death and blood. Mentions of drinking to cope. Swearing. Angst.

You lay in your bunk, hands shaking. The Batch had landed on the heavily besieged planet of Hyrus and you’d immediately been drafted as a field medic. That was a mistake. You should have stayed with your squad.

It was complete carnage. Plastoid littered the ground like broken glass, clones dropped like flies. The air was thick with dust and the smell of blood.

More than once you’d been forced to choke down bile when you came across a body. But you pushed through. You saved as many as you could and lost three times more.

It was like Umbara all over again.

Now, three days later, settled peacefully on Coruscant, you couldn’t stop from trembling every time you closed your eyes.

Those clones, those men, those wonderful soldiers, they looked like your boys. Of course they did. They were all brothers. But it didn’t change the fact that as life left their eyes you saw every person that you failed to save.

You shook yourself, reaching for your datapad to check your time. Another mistake. The first things that came up were group pictures of the 501st, at varying times.

The first one was of you, Rex, Jesse, Kix, Hardcase, Redeye, Mixer, Fives, and Echo. It was shortly before the attack on Kamino that would see Fives and Echo promoted to ARC troopers. And just before the deaths of Redeye and Mixer.

You didn’t know them well, but they were kind. Redeye would bring you caf on long shifts and Mixer always had a comment to make under his breath that would make you laugh.

The second picture was just after Fives and Echo’s promotion. You were standing between the two, your arms over their shoulders and theirs behind your back as you grinned at the camera. Rex had taken that picture if you remembered correctly.

And then Echo had made him dip his hand in blue paint and slap it against his new chestplate. You remembered the look of amusement on the Captain’s face well as Echo held up the paint bucket teasingly.

That handprint was gone now, replaced by the signature skull of the Bad Batch. Fives was gone too.

You should’ve put the datapad down by now. But you couldn’t.

Another photo, this one of the boys in the civvies you bought for them. It was before Umbara, around the time Dogma and Tup joined your little group. You were at 79s, in a booth. Rex was watching with a soft smile as Jesse teased Tup. Kix was approaching with shots. Somehow, Fives had managed to coax you onto his lap and had promptly latched onto you. Hardcase was beside him, mid speech as you laughed. Dogma was the only one not smiling, looking rather uncomfortable out of armor.

This was the last time you were all together like this. And the knowledge of that hurt. It hurt so much.

You looked at your datapad with hollow eyes, a heavy feeling settling in your bones and an ache in your heart. Gently you traced a finger over your missing boys’ faces. “I dream of you almost every night. Hopefully, I won’t wake up this time.”

Jaw set and eyes fighting against tears, you stood and pulled on your vambrance and chestplate. You didn't spare the cockpit a glance as you left the Marauder, flagging down the nearest taxi-speeder, comlink tucked into your belt and vibroblade in your boot.

You were definitely drunk, Hunter could tell. You staggered onto the Marauder at three in the morning, smelling like booze and tears, giggling when you tripped over a wrench.

The ghosts that normally followed you around -ghosts of clones that looked at you with love in their eyes- were barely there, unable to draw energy from your drunken self.

The most prominent one, the only clone out of the group with a beard tried to guide you, but when his hands passed through your shoulders he gave his brothers a despairing look.

“Where have you been?” Crosshair asked and you jerked, looking at him with hazy eyes.

“Why do you need to know?” You shot back, words slurred.

“You’ve been gone for hours,” Echo said. “We were worried.”

The clone ghost with the beard gave him the same loving look he usually reserved for you.

“I made it back didn’t I?” You scoffed. “No need for all this fuss, Hardcase.”

Echo flinched and so did one of the ghosts.

“Where’s Kix? Or Rex?” You asked, looking at the Batch like they weren’t truly there. “I gotta tell them I’m hammered. So they know to leave out the caf and pills.”

“Captain Rex is not here,” Tech said. “And I think you need to go to bed. You appear to be experiencing drunken delusions.”

You barked a laugh, but it wasn’t like your usual laugh. This laugh was pained and bitter. “Go to bed, that’s a riot.”

You squinted at him. “Which one are you again? Nevermind. I’m perfectly fine. Well, I’m not, but at this point, anything’s better than kriffing sleeping.”

Tears had suddenly filled up your eyes and the faded ghost with the teardrop tattoo drew closer to you.

“I can’t keep doing this,” You whispered, swaying on your feet. “Every time I close my eyes they’re there and when I wake up they’re gone again. And it hurts.”

The tears were slipping down your cheeks now. “It hurts so much.”

You looked up at Hunter, eyes pleading. “Why won’t it stop hurting? Make it stop, please.”

Then your eyes drooped shut and you fell face-first to the floor. Luckily, the long-haired clone moved fast enough to catch you before you broke your nose on the cold metal.

You woke up with an aching head, wrapped in blankets, chest plate lying on the floor, and arm bracers at the foot of the bunk. You didn’t remember taking them off. Hell, you didn’t even remember getting in bed.

Groaning, you raised yourself up. The gray walls spun for a moment and you shivered in the cold recycled air.

You glanced at the other bunk, Echo’s. It was empty and you picked up your vambrace to check the time.

It was technically late in the afternoon and you winced. You were supposed to take a shift in the cockpit at 9 cycles.

Unsteadily, you swung your legs over the edge of the bunk and stood, moving to the cabinet to retrieve a loose pair of pants and a faded red top. You needed to use the fresher and badly.

On your way out of your room, you knocked back the small cup of water and pills that had been left out for you.

The door to Crosshair and Tech’s bunk was open when you stepped into the hall and you could feel the sniper’s gaze on your skin.

Languidly, the tall clone moved to lean on the wall of the corridor, subtly blocking your path. “Care to explain last night?”

You squinted at him. Vaguely, you remembered getting drunk, unable to cope with the recurring pain of losing your boys, but after the 3rd vodka mixer, things got a little fuzzy.

“No.” You said, determining that to be a good answer. If you’d done anything dumb, you didn’t particularly care to relive it.

Crosshair raised his brows. “No?”

“That’s what I said. Now if you’ll excuse me,” You nudged him aside, continuing your journey to the fresher.

As you closed the door, you saw the look the sniper gave you. Not quite sympathetic or sad, Cross could never be described as something like that, but it still felt concerned.

You rested the back of your head on the door, inhaling deeply. The headache was receding, but your brain still felt fuzzy.

You pushed yourself up, dropping your clothing on the tiny counter and sparing a quick glance in the mirror.

Unsurprisingly, you looked exactly how you felt. Messy and worn out.

Your hair was a borderline rat’s nest and the dark circles that had started forming beneath your eyes were more prominent than ever. Your eyeliner was smudged around your eyes as well, adding to the roughed-up raccoon look.

A chill ran down your spine then, like someone had pressed a cold fingertip to your spine and unconsciously you found yourself peeking over your shoulder.

No one was there, but when you glanced back at the mirror your eyes fell on the form of a lean male standing just behind you.

“Fuck!” You shrieked, jerking back into the fresher wall with a loud slam.

Fresh pain spread up the back of your skull, but the form of the man behind you in the mirror didn’t change. In fact, it seemed to clear, enough for you to make out the sight of blue lines running along the figure’s skull and kind gold irises.

You raised a hand to scrub at your eyes disbelievingly.

“Hardcase?” You breathed and the man in the mirror grinned at you.

Hey Pretty. He mouthed and you pressed the back of your hand to your lips to stifle a low sob. “This isn’t real. I’m still dreaming. Or drunk.”

Hardcase shook his head and placed a hand on your shoulder. The same chill you felt on your spine returned and when you tried to raise your hand to cover his own, it just passed through.

“How-“ You started to ask but Echo’s voice came from outside the fresher and made you jump and jerk your head towards the door.

“Mesh’la?” He asked. “Are you alright in there?”

“I’m-“ You paused and looked back at the mirror. Hardcase was gone and so was the lingering chill on your shoulder. “I’m fine.”

“So we made it to Tatooine,” a voice with a noticeable Mando'a accent began as the holocam view spins slowly around taking in yellow dunes and a cloudless sky. “Most of the settlements are in the northern hemisphere of the planet. I say settlements, but this is pretty much all there is in the north. Sand and looking over here, even more sand. And what’s over in the west? Sand. The south? Almost no one goes to the southern hemisphere because there’s absolutely nothing to see there either. Except sand of course. There’s nothing to see on this entire, Force-forsaken, garbage masher of a–”

“Are the scramblers in place?”

Even through the helmet, one can see the visible eyeroll that question causes. “For the tenth time Joc, the scramblers are in place. We’re good to go. As soon as He gives us the signal, we go in and we get everyone out.”

The holoimage shakes and wobbles.

“Stand still, will you?” Another helmeted figure hisses. “We’ve got the easy part.”

“You say that but where’s the signal, huh? Why hasn’t He–“

Static garbles the holo-transmission for several seconds and there is an ear shattering boom.

“Move, move!” a trooper orders and they are on the run, bursting through the subterranean tunnels and breaking down every door they can find. It’s dark and only the lights from the clone trooper helmets’ illuminate the cells and the huddle broken figures packed inside.

From the high angle of the holoimage, the viewer can see a male Crolute is standing on a raised stage before a raucous crowd, shiny datapad in hand. “I hear 32, do I hear 40? 40 peggats for this fine specimen. She’s still got some youth to her, do I hear 48? 48 to the Lady Murra, thank you for you bid. 56! Thank you, sir. Do I hear 64? She’ll earn you that back in a week, look at her!” he crows reaching over to pull off her barely closed shirt exposing her to the eyes of the crowd. “Do I hear 64?”

The girl, barely into her teens, simply keeps her head lowered. She makes no move to cover herself. She stands still and silent on the stage.

“Tell me I can kill him,” a voice mutters darkly.

“Wait, Redeye.”

“I want to kill him. I’ve got the shot. Let me take the damn shot, Captain.”

“Wait.”

“Sold!” the auctioneer roars and two Weequays take hold of the newly purchased slave and drag her from the stage. The Crolute motions for the next lot and the guards drag forth a Twi'lek child from the holding pens. The child is barely old enough to toddle on his own two feet. His face is a howling mask of grief and pain.

“Ryma!” the child cries, his hands reaching desperately behind him to the figures packet tightly into cages. “Ryma! Ryma!”

“Skrag this,” Redeye swears and the holocamera captures perfectly the moment where the guards and the auctioneer are taken out with three quick headshot blasts from sniper rifle.

“REDEYE!” a voice roars.

“Go ahead and put me on report, Captain. I don’t care!” Redeye yells back as the camera angle shifts again and again as he snipes people in the panicking crowd, taking out slavers execution style with one perfect headshot after another. “I’m not watching one more second of this kriffing, messed up–“

There is a thrum of an engine, the familiar whine of a troop transport. Air support casts a large shadow over the auction square. A dark blurry figure falls from the sky to a land amid the screaming chaos of bodies. The mic on the holocamera picks up an all to familiar snap-hiss.

“–so introduce everyone already, Echo!” the trooper out of the holoframe, but holding the camera, calls out.

“Right, so this is Xian,” Echo says pointing at one of the people sitting with him in the courtyard. They are a motley crew each standing or sitting with slug throwing rifles in their hands, braced against their shoulders, resting on their bent knees. “And this is Lore, Etamin, Kor-Joo, and Anequis. They’re here helping us with the liberation of the planet. Lots of people are willing to help, which sure makes a change from the Wars. They’re helping us organize. Say hello to the rest of the GAR everyone!”

The holoimage moves around as if the camera is being held by someone drunk.

“Put it into focus. No! Not like that! Push the other button!”

“I can do it, CT-9779! I’m not a nerf, you know.”

“Could have fooled me,” CT-9779 replies under his breath.

“Shut up.”

“Can you just let me do it? It’s my camera! I don’t want you to break it. What are you even trying to do?”

“I’m trying to– ah-ha!” The image stops shaking and then zooms in quickly on the building. Hanging by a chain from the highest tower is a bulbous blurry mass. Then the image comes into focus.

It is the body of a Hutt, dangling in the air. It is wrapped and strangled by chains, purifying in the desert heat, and covered with insects feasting on the rotting remains.

“Really? Of all the things to use my camera for, you want to take a holo of that? You think people want to see that festering pile of–“

“Are you kidding me? This is THE holo. This, right here. People are gonna want to have this framed and in their homes, I tell you. Jabba, dead at last! I only wish we’d managed to get a holo of that moment where He used the Force to wrap the chains around him and choke him to death. The look on his face!”

“Put the weapon down! Put it down!”

The richly dressed man presses the blade even deeper into the young boy’s throat. “I’ll kill him. I’ll kill him if you don’t let me go!”

“Put the weapon down and release the boy or we’ll fire!”

“We can come to an arrangement. You can take this one if you leave me be. I’m a reasonable man! I’m being reasonable!”

“Kriff you, we don’t make deals with child raping scum! Let the boy go!”

The boy who’d been hanging limp in the slaver’s grasp seems to suddenly steel himself. He raises his hands and digs his nails into the arm pinning him and turns his head, heedless of the blade at his throat and bites down, hard.

The man screams, the blade slices, blood arcs, the troopers fire.

The camera jostles and the troopers’ hands come into view, pressing against the boy’s gaping throat as he lies fallen on the carpeted floor of the lavish bedroom. “Sith hell! Get a medic! GET A MEDIC!”

Sharp cracking shots fill the air. The helmet holocamera view is partially obscured by a building wall.

“They’re above the catina! Left Foot! Bats! Do you hear me? They’re above the cantina!”

A woman pushes the trooper aside, steps out behind the cover of the building and brings her slug throwing rifle to bear.

“Get back!” The trooper yells grabbing her and yanking her back under cover. “Xian, are you crazy? We need to coordinate, you can’t just–“

There is a sudden pop and the front of the cantina explodes into a fire ball.

Xian spits and then stands, weapon at the ready and advances into the fray.

“Skrag this! Left Foot, we’re going in!”

The holoimage is dominated by the cockpit of the fighter. Armored hands work the controls. A piece of starry space is visible through the bend of the transparisteel canopy.

“Swinging around for another sweep,” a trooper voice crackles as if heard through a long tunnel.

“Stay in formation, Kickback. We’re having a hard enough time covering the whole planet with this CAP to have you straggling.”

“Negative, Pike. I’m getting something, something from the southern hemisphere.”

“I’ve got nothing on my scopes,” another voice protests. “No one even lives in the southern hemisphere.”

A sliver of the yellow sunbaked planet is visible now through the canopy.

“I’m telling you, there’s something,” Kickback insists, priming his weapons. “Come around to flank me. I think we’ve got someone about to try and run the blockade.”

“Another feeling, huh?”

Kickback laughs. “I haven’t been wrong yet. There! Do you see? Switch to visual tracking. The engine trail. Point five.”

“They’re flying like a mynok outta hell,” Pike remarks. “Unidentified ship. You are ordered to stand down and prepare to be boarded.”

“They’re not answering and they’re not stopping.”

“I can see that Oddball,” Pike responds with exasperation. “Comm the Dauntless, tell them we have our first catch of the day. Kickback, can you--”

“Hyperspace event!” another voice shouts over the comms. “We’ve got someone coming out of lightspeed!”

“Who is it?”

“GAR cruiser, sir!”

“Blast it, forget about that! The ship is making a break for it!” Kickback yelled. “We can’t let them–!”

“Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth or are you just a meat sack in armor with a gun? I don’t keep slaves. Everyone works for me because they chose to,” the woman insists. “It’s a job.” She turns and gestures to the various barely clad species huddled behind her.

“Everyone gets scanned,” the trooper insists. “Denal?”

The trooper steps forward and raises the strangely cobbled together device.

The woman stares at the scanner and her eyes widen and she pales. “L-look, I’m telling you. There’s been a mistake. This is a house of pleasure. The girls and boys here make a decent living. What’s wrong with a little companionship? You, trooper. Denal, is it? Don’t you want to rest a bit? Spend some quality time with one or two of my employees? On the house, of course!”

The device flashes once and Denal turns the screen so the woman can see. “Employees, huh? Then why are they all implanted with transmitters and bombs?”

In the dim light it is hard to make out much, but the clone armor still stands out, reflecting back the emergency lanterns as the trooper digs frantically with his hands, a part of his own armor, and what appears to be the Force, at the side of a mountain.

“Hardcase? Hardcase, there’s nothing more to be done.”

“They were just behind me, sir,” Hardcase explains as he strains to move more debris. “The little one, he was hanging from my shoulders. They’re probably just past these rocks. They’re probably waiting for us to get them out. We just need to dig a little bit more. We just need to prop this up with something--”

With every boulder shifted, ever meter dug, his progress is eaten away by the force of gravity, dragging down more of the mountain.

Hardcase lets out a noise of frustration. “I need some help,” he finally says. “I just need some help digging.” He turns and faces the officer who is trying to get him to stop. “Captain, is Fives up yet? What about Chatterbox? And Cooker? If they’ve recovered, we can clear the entrance together. We can use the Force and–“

“Fives, Cooker, and Chatterbox are still unconscious,” Captain Rex interrupts quietly. “So’s Flare and Bats. They held up the mountain as long as they could. You need to rest too, soldier.”

Hardcase blinks. Then he shakes himself and turns back to his task.

“Just a bit more, Captain. They were just behind me. They’re waiting. I’ve just gotta move a few more rocks. Just a few more, yeah.”

“Anakin? Anakin, enough now. Turn it off, please.”
