That’s how it went for those first few glorious days back home. A lot of eating. A lot of lazing around. I wished things could be exactly the same as they’d always been, but I started to see that they weren’t. It was maybe two, three days after coming back, Mama was out and I told my sister I was going over to Clintwood to go see friends. I hopped in Dad’s car and started driving. The town is only fifteen miles down the road, maybe less, but after about five minutes behind the wheel, my heart started pounding something fierce. My hands grew clammy. My stomach did flip-flops. I swerved the car over onto the road’s shoulder, took it out of gear, and sat, idling, breathing, trying to slow my pulse, trying to take stock of what was happening in my head. I remembered once as a little kid I’d gone camping with a buddy. We were real young. Maybe seven, eight. The two of us were within hiking distance of home. We had flashlights and our sleeping bags and two sandwiches each in case we grew hungry during the night. I’d never been afraid of the woods, and I wasn’t afraid then, but it was a similar feeling out alone in the tent to what I was feeling now by the side of the road. If a fella isn’t any braver, he thinks about packing up his gear and heading inside for the night. Well, I looked down the road toward Clintwood. Then I put Dad’s car into gear, pulled a U-turn, and headed back home.
[...] All those years of me being away in the war, I never had such a feeling of security like I did when I was back home. Even when I became a paratrooper. A fella feels confident when he’s in uniform and surrounded by his friends. He feels like he can do most anything he sets his mind to do. But when I got home, well, it’s hard to fully put those other feelings into words, the not-so-good feelings, how I felt in Europe so many times. So cold. So hungry. So scared. There wasn’t enough distance yet between me and those awful feelings, and I didn’t want to give up the good feeling of security I was soaking in at home, even for a drive down the road.

Just watched The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Very good. It definitely won’t become my personality for the next week.
Wait. What’s happening.

A Southwest Virginia family is suing a Bristol abortion clinic, Dickenson County’s Department of Social Services (DSS) and several individuals for allegedly pressuring their 15-year-old daughter into having an abortion against her will and without legal consent in January.
The civil suit claims a DSS employee pressured the girl into the abortion and that the DSS’s local director tried to retroactively get judicial consent “for the unlawful abortion.” Both are named as defendants along with the abortion clinic’s director, whom the suit accuses of joining in the social worker’s efforts to persuade the girl. The suit also names a doctor from the clinic as a defendant.

Clint Eastwood is a person. East Clintwood is a place. in your heart and mind.
Is it like Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville in that sense?

i'm fully prepared to eat these words if it all turns out to have been Part Of The Plan, but having reached roughly the halfway point of this book, i gotta say, it's... not very good? like, stephen king's a big name in literature, the dark tower is one of those Titles that everyone everywhere seems to be at least vaguely familiar with, so idk i was kinda expecting more i guess. i'm no blushing prude, i don't have some kind of Moral Thing against sex in literature. hell, this isn't even the worst Story-Of-How-The-Author's-Self-Insert-Sluts-His-Way-Across-The-Wild-Wild-Wasteland i've read. but at the same time i was kinda expecting a book that'd be at least somewhat interesting if you're not really that into gratuitous mentions of bodily fluids and functions.
this post is already turning into a running review so fuckit, here's what i got so far
- the pacing is... basically nonexistant. we get an intriguing introduction for the setting and protagonist, but then immediately spend fifty pages in an extremely detailed flashback sequence that itself reads like an extended introductory sequence. that's nearly a quarter of the book, and a fifth of that is spent on a backstory-flashback-within-a-backstory-flashback. there doesn't seem to be any reason why all of this wasn't just on the ground floor of the narrative - the gunslinger's telling this story to a random hermit in the desert, but the hermit exits stage left pretty much immediately after it's done, so he kinda feels more like a set piece than someone who adds anything to the situation, an excuse to lay out The Road So Far.
- the titular gunslinger (roland) feels like he's supposed to be the Mysterious Stranger™, but so much is kept close to his chest for so long even from the audience that for most of the story he just reads as empty. a cardboard cutout of clint eastwood who's good at sex and violence and brooding and mostly that's the extent of his personality. on screen he could maybe be carried by the actor's jawline but on paper the word i'd use to describe him is "uncompelling".
- the man in black, on the other hand, is an enigma, in a way that honestly makes him more intriguing than east clintwood. so far it's really not clear at all what his deal is, why roland's chasing him, or why he's apparently decided to leave a string of randomly tormented souls in his wake. he gives the impression of a strange and horrible gremlin man, a well-spoken travelling doctor who raises the dead with displays of creepy acrobatics and all but disappears in a puff of smoke (does king's Clown Thing extend to tumblers? do handsprings genuinely make necromancy more unsettling to him? fascinating.). i feel like this guy was aimed at "sinister outsider" but fell closer to "mildly dastardly rumplestiltskin". looking forward to whatever he does next.
- the residents of undeadwood are all grotesque and small-minded, denizens of a wild west frontier town keeping themselves occupied with incest and religious zealotry, but painted in such an oversexualised way that the author's clearly getting off on it. if they were supposed to be an integral part of the setting they'd mostly just make me mildly uncomfortable, but i cannot get over the fact that we spend fifty pages with roland as he alternatingly skulks around and bangs the barwoman before he slaughters literally everyone and just wanders off into the desert. surprise, we're now a third into the book and the only remaining character who's been present for more than eleven pages is the hollow man. what the fuck.
- jake is a character that at present i cannot fathom. he's a 7-11 year old (?) from new york matching the description of a pint-sized captain america, who was graphically pushed into traffic by the man in black and woke up in the desert just in time for roland to find him. his late introduction to the story only makes the last fifty-odd pages feel even more like a long-winded prologue. my instinctual prediction would be that the grizzled mass murderer and the sheltered puppy are going to develop a father-son relationship over the course of their adventure, and i would be right, because roland immediately decides that he loves the kid and also that the kid is going to be used against him by the man in black. either we're speedrunning this because the kid's gonna be dead by the end of the book or there's just a tragic misunderstanding of "show don't tell" going on here. either way, i say once again: pacing.
- the flashback sequences to roland's terrible childhood reveal very little about his inner mechanisms, aside from his Righteous Fury, which we already knew about, and the fact that he personally identifies with oedipus, which in the absence of many admirable traits to contrast it with doesn't make him as interesting as maybe it's meant to. i'm so tired of reading about this stale saltine cracker of a man, let's get back to the man in black already, at least he seems fucked up in a fun way.
- the Oracle Scene involves roland finding the kid being psychically molested by a nymphomaniac (fkn lol) demon (?) in a stone circle, taking lsd, and banging it out with said demon in exchange for a horoscope reading. it's exactly as uncomfortable as it sounds. somehow king manages to describe a gust of wind breasts first. why, steve. why.
reading the dark tower for the first time and uh. hm. the phrase "breasted boobily" springs to mind for some indefinable reason.
