Dr. Nadine Burke Harris (October 5, 1975) is a pediatrician who is the 1st Surgeon General of California (2019-22). She is known for linking adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress with harmful effects on health later on in life. She is an advisory council member for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Clinton Foundation’s Too Small to Fail campaign and the Founder and former chief executive officer of the Center for Youth Wellness. Hailed as a pioneer in the treatment of toxic stress, her work has been featured in Paul Tough’s book How Children Succeed.

She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is of Jamaican heritage and lived in Jamaica before the family moved to the US when she was 4 years old. Her father is a biochemist and her mother is a nurse. She received her BS in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley in 1996 and her MD from UC Davis. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, within Stanford University School of Medicine. Following receipt of her MS in Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, she went on to serve a residency at Stanford in pediatrics.

Her graduate studies were supported by The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.

On January 21, 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed her as the state’s first Surgeon General. She was sworn in on February 11, 2019.

Sen Menendez indictment of the day....

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Federal prosecutors in New York filed new charges Thursday against United States Sen. Bob Menendez, the New Jersey Democrat, of violating a prohibition on members of Congress from acting as an agent of a foreign principal. The superseding indictment said Menendez "made multiple requests for the U.S. Department of Justice to commence an investigation against another person for allegedly failing to register under FARA." The indictment was filed in Manhattan federal court on Thursday. It says the conspiracy occurred from January 2018 to June 2022. It includes four new charges and appears to mark the first time a sitting member of Congress has ever been charged with conspiracy for a public official to act as a foreign agent. The indictment said Menendez conspired with his wife, Nadine Menendez, and New Jersey businessman Wael Hana to have the senator act as an agent of Egypt. Perry, Iowa school shooter

The suspect behind the Perry High School shooting has been reportedly identified as senior Dylan Butler, local outlet WHO 13 reports. Police confirmed the shooter’s identity. While several were injured, one boy, a 6th grader, was killed. The shooting took place in the morning prior to the start of the school day during a breakfast program. The Thursday morning shooting in the Iowa school around 25 miles northwest of Des Moines, Iowa saw three people injured, including school principal Dan Marburger who was rushed into surgery.*** Butler allegedly had a TikTok account where he went by the username "tooktoomuch." The student’s last post was him inside a bathroom stall with a duffel bag on the ground next to him. The still video featured the words "now we wait" with a song called "Stray Bullets" playing. Police are investigating these assets. HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A grand jury declined to file charges against the man who shot and killed a robber at a southwest Houston taqueria last year. The shooting happened on Jan. 5, 2023, at the El Ranchito taqueria on South Gessner Road. Eric Eugene Washington, 30, was shot and killed as he walked through the restaurant robbing people, according to police. In the wake of the shooting, there were calls for the shooter to be charged. Some called him a "vigilante." Others called the man who shot and killed the robber a hero.***

In 2013, he and others were charged with capital murder after a man was killed during an armed robbery, according to prosecutors. Oxford University will be awarding the Rhodes Scholarship to two outstanding Israeli students this year, according to a university statement.One of the oldest and most well known educational awards in the world, the Rhodes Scholarship funds two to three years of advanced study at the prestigious English university, including full tuition, a living stipend, housing and airfare, among other things.

The potential scholars must possess a 3.7 GPA, be between 19 and 27 years old, and have lived as a resident in Israel for five of the last 10 years.This will be the fourth year that the university will offer Israeli students the opportunity to become Rhodes Scholars; six Israelis have so far received the award.Notable previous Rhodes Scholars include former US president Bill Clinton; astronomer Edwin Hubble, whom the Hubble Space Telescope is named for; Nobel Prize winner Howard Florey; three Australian prime ministers, and American television host Rachel Maddow.

Previous Israeli winners include University of Haifa graduate Lian Najami, who went on to intern for the US Senate and is working towards a dual degree at Oxford in public policy and comparative social policy, and Nadav Lidor, who earned his CS undergraduate degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Stanford, and then his MA in public policy at Oxford while working to advance AI within British government offices. Dr. Nadine Baudot-Trajtenberg, former deputy governor of the Bank of Israel received the scholarship around 30 years ago.

“Choosing these students is about choosing the next world leaders, so they must express an interest in public service and demonstrate a desire to contribute,” according to National Secretary for Israel of the Rhodes Trust Doron Weber, who notes that the main criteria for selection includes not only academic excellence but also leadership ability.

Nadine Burke Harris (born October 5, 1975) is a pediatrician who is the 1st Surgeon General of California (2019 -2022). She is known for linking adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress with harmful effects on health later on in life. She is an advisory council member for Hillary Rodham Clinton's Clinton Foundation's Too Small to Fail campaign, and the Founder and former chief executive officer of the Center for Youth Wellness. Hailed as a pioneer in the treatment of toxic stress, her work has been featured in Paul Tough's book How Children Succeed. She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is of Jamaican heritage and lived in Jamaica before the family moved to the US when she was 4 years old. Her father is a biochemist and her mother is a nurse. She received her BS in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley in 1996 and her MD from UC Davis. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, within Stanford University School of Medicine. Following receipt of her MS in Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, she went on to serve a residency at Stanford in pediatrics. Her graduate studies were supported by The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans. Nadine Boustani was born and raised in a brownstone in Brooklyn, smack-dab in the middle of the vibrant, historic pre-Civil War 9th Street. She was the only daughter of a Lebanese cardiothoracic surgeon and an Italian American liaison with the UN, and would attribute her penchant to overachieve to the fact that both of her parents, Maheer and Alessandra, were equally successful in their respective fields. Nadine was the youngest of her mother’s children – born only two years after her older brother Alexander – though her father had two daughters from a previous marriage.

 There was never a more tightly knit unit than within the Boustani’s Brooklyn brownstone, which served as a revolving door for the eclectic guests breezing in and out of Nadine’s parents’ presence. It wasn’t unusual for the Boustanis to host world-renowned heart surgeons within their four-walls;

nor was it uncommon for her parents to engage in heated political discussions while breaking bread with members of The Hague. Whether cross-legged on the carpet or draped over the dining room table, Nadine kept a curious ear to the affairs of the city – to the critiques her parents’ company lobbed at the Bush or Clinton administrations, and to the hushed Arabic with which her parents privately chided their colleagues.

 Only thirty years prior, her father, Maheer, had purchased that brownstone for a fraction of what it would be worth now. Within it, he’d planted the roots of his American dream, nurtured with the soil brought from his homeland, bloodied by a Civil War of its own, and with the memory of his first wife – who’d been among the hundreds of thousands of fatalities. He’d watered his dream with the nectar of perseverance and instilled in Nadine a passion and grit that would lead her to clear-cut success. In many ways, Maheer Boustani was his youngest daughter’s greatest hero.  

 Teenaged Nadine would attend a wealthy all-girl’s school in the Upper East Side, where she was baptized in her mother’s Roman Catholic faith (as many of her WASP peers were). She was successful, well-liked, and graduated with the highest distinction. Her heritage, coupled with her own merit and the benefit of having attended expensive private schools, paved an inevitable path to an Ivy League education. It was not so much as celebrated, but simply expected, that Nadine would gain acceptance into Harvard University. When she did, her father’s response was a quiet, affirmatory nod that gave to Nadine all the confidence required to begin a new chapter in her life.

 She’d remained permanently in Boston after graduating, beginning a series of internships, jobs, and relationships in that city on a hill – though Brooklyn remained a persistent sirens’ call in the back of her mind. Brooklyn was home, and for years, she scoured for ways to return to it. When one came, however, she desperately warred against it. In her second year of law school, Nadine’s father was diagnosed with a form of advanced stage lung cancer. It was an ironic end, considering he’d spent the majority of his life dissecting and removing what killed him in less than a year. She withdrew from school, moved back in with her mother, and began a job as an assistant in the Kings County District Attorney’s office, specializing in the Orange Trial Zone Bureau.

 Unlike most reporters for the New York Times, the position had, more or less, fallen into her lap – whether the product of happenstance or luck. She’d built up years of experience with exposure to crime in the city, and through the Bureau handled a full-range of offenses from violations and misdemeanors to drug sales, assaults, burglaries, robberies, and attempted murder. She’d been promoted from an entry-level position to a supervisory role in the span of four years. She was twenty-six when a victim’s mother crooked her head at her and said: you should write a book about the things you’ve seen. I’d read it.
