FIFA: Soccer’s Harm to the Environment

“Go Canada!”. It’s all I could make out through the loud cheers and excitement as I tuned in to watch the World Cup Qualifying Game where Canada beat Jamaica 4-0 to secure their spot in the 2022 World Cup.  As the referee blew the whistle, the energy was ecstatic as the fans and players celebrated Canada’s completion of the quest to Qatar 2022. As a fan of soccer who never expected Canada to gain a spot in the world cup after 37 years, I was happy for Canada! However, their win was not the only thing on my mind. 

I began to think of the social and environmental impacts of the FIFA World Cup. For starters, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which has yet to begin, has already had mass implications. It has sparked human rights concerns. It has been reported that more than 6500 migrant workers have died in Qatar after the country learned that it will host the 2022 World Cup, 10 years ago (The Guardian, 2021). Many of these workers likely died while working on World Cup infrastructure projects. However, Qatar has argued that these deaths are not related to the World Cup but rather due to “natural causes”. It was also found that many of these deaths are due to heat stress (The Guardian, 2019). 

Despite the social impacts of the world cup, it has also brought out great environmental concerns. The 2014 World Cup held in Brazil had immense impacts on the environment. This event generated 2.72 tonnes of carbon emissions (Edie Newsroom, 2018). To put into perspective. This is equivalent to the yearly emissions of 560 000 cars (Ahir, 2022). Thus, there is great fear about what the upcoming World Cup will cause the environment. 

Amid the criticism, FIFA intends to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2040. However, this received great criticism as it was proposed at the same time, they proposed having the World Cup every 2 years, instead of every 4 years (Kurmayer, 2021). 

This is not the only time that FIFA has been accused of unsubstantial climate initiatives. In the 2018 World Cup, FIFA encouraged fans to “offset” their carbon emissions from flying. FIFA said that for each application, they will offset 2.9 tonnes, the average emission per fan flying to the World Cup in Russia (ClimateChangeNews,2018). However, it was clear that this was nothing more than greenwashing. This seemed like a branding scheme rather than climate action as the association has yet to take serious steps to reduce its emissions by financing and implementing more greener projects. 

The environmental impacts of FIFA’s World Cup reveal the backwardness of corporations and their selfish nature. The capitalist system that exists in society promotes limitless growth and FIFA is seeking maximum growth. Their total revenue for 2015-2018 was $5.6 million (FIFA, 2021). It’s clear how exploiting the environment through such destructive events is financially benefiting them. FIFA is taking advantage of the capitalist system that enables and promotes endless growth. 

Besides the World Cup’s contribution to global emissions, pollution is also exacerbated through food waste, spills, and improper recycling. Until FIFA takes adequate steps to reduce their environmental impacts, fans must also learn to respect the environments of nation hosts. The World Cup should promote or encourage fans to do so. Some examples include encouraging fans to use public transit or even bikes to get around the host nation and reduce their ecological footprint. I truly hope FIFA begins to take genuine steps to reduce their environmental impacts as the climate crisis is worsening.
