Eurovision 2003 - Number 7 - Botnleðja - "Euróvísa"

This video is 2:52 long. The band only start singing and performing 35s in, after engaging in some audience encouragement and instruction in how to clap in time. If you thought t.A.T.u. were rough and propulsive, I give you Botnleðja from Iceland's amazing national final.

The band have been going since the mid 1990s, have a string of four previous albums and one released this year as well as another two released under the band name 'Silt'. What will really interest Eurovision fans is that shortly after 2003 two-thirds of Botnleðja will head-off to form another band - Pollapönk.

Euróvísa is what they do - alt-punk/alt-rock played fast. Very fast. It is noisy, feedback-loving, shouty, percussive (perhaps concussive) and has a little bit of audience participation/reassurance at the top of the song. It's followed by some jangly guitar before bassist Ragnar Páll Steinsson plants his foot firmly on the accelerator and the band take off.

There is an English language version of this song on their final album (Iceland National Park) but it's called Human Clicktrack and I'm pretty sure those English lyrics bear no relation at all to the Icelandic ones. This is a band that's effectively an outburst from an exceptionally tight rhythm section (Haraldur Freyr Gíslason on drums) accompanied by howls of expression from lead singer Heiðar Örn Kristjánsson.

Confession time, this is very like the stuff I listen to in my day-to-day non-Eurovision life and again, I may have seen them live without realising. They supported Blur on tour in the UK in the 1990s. Did all UK tours involve Icelandic support bands post Britpop? I love the idea that something like Euróvísa was even considered by a national broadcaster as a possibility for Eurovision.

It did very well. In fact it came second on a 100% televote. Iceland you crazy, crazy country. Iceland got drawn to open Eurovision 2003. Can you imagine Terry Wogan's reaction to this?

The band broke up between 2003 and 2006, but out of the ashes, came Pollapönk. A very different proposition with their own Eurovision history that I'm sure I'll get to eventually. But one little Pollapönk fact that illustrates how close Botnleðja are linked to the UK 90s and 00s indie music scene. The English language version of their Eurovision song had the translation written by John Grant

The biggest problem with Le Mis was the attitude some of the main cast had to the songs. Hugh Jackman and Anne Hataways insistence on extreme body transformations, Russel Crowes singing style clashing completely, and no one knowing what a clicktrack was. And Tom Hooper. Tom Hooper was a big part of the problem.

Both leads in Wicked having musical experience and respect for the orchestra showed. They made the songs their own, but they were still following the tempo.

generally i'm still pretty anti-singing live for movie musicals just bc filming schedules are generally so gruelling that even pro theatre performers would find it grueling however. the stark difference in quality between les mis and wicked actually so insane.

I've been trying a little music/life experiment. For the entirety of November the only tempo I played, practiced or recorded on any instrument was 215bpm (not counting No Cigar rehearsal or shows). Now for December I've settled into 175bpm. Each month will be a new set tempo. I'm curious if this will affect my day to day or my overall perception of time?... SHUT UP SHUT UP NO WAYYYYYYY!!!!! (pun intended)

got to meet the assistant conductor and take a masterclass w her today!!!! we learned ex-wives (i was boleyn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) then did a q and a!!! quick notes from memory!

so it's a silent stage production, meaning all the instruments are electrical! I didn't know that!

this assistant conductor often fills in for joan on the keys, and I got to see her as joan! bc shes the conductor, but also playing onstage, there's a small camera on her while she's playing and she conducts with her head, as well as having her own internal mic that goes to everyone else's earpiece!

speaking of the earpieces, the Queens don't get a clicktrack!!! (lucky, I hate clicktracks lol) they just get the feedback of the instruments/voices/conductor counting them in, which is fascinating!

last thing on the earpieces,I promise, during the in ear check, they tell eachother bad dad jokes to make sure they can hear each other!!!! cute!!

another backstage joke they have (at least the tour cast, can't speak for the others) is assigning astrology signs to each other (moon/sun rising and whatnot) but with queens instead of signs! like howard with aragon rising!!!idk what that means but it's sick!

lastly, I learned that the music director is very intentional about when vibrato is used in the show, only used three times in ex-wives for example! the idea was to be as straight-toned pop sounding as possible so that the special moments with vibrato could shimmer and stand out!!!! (obvi each queens solo is more up to performer interpretation, but the idea is still used!)

i think that's it for now?? I gotta go to bed, but enjoy these fun facts I learned!!!!!!!!

literally was so healing for the inner child, as I was sitting there waiting for the show to start, with the harpsichord covers of pop songs in the background, icould FEEL the love and joy i got from this show come rushing back!!!! when the Queens entered for ex-wives I couldn't help it man, I cried!!! full tears!!!!! thats what brought me to tumblr!! those characters amd the incredible performers is what gave me the passion to be here today!!!!!!

obviously the show was fantastic, i love six so so so much (i also teared up at Jane's first bad joke... i missed these characters sm), and the boleyn tour cast ATE, I loved hearing their interpretations of the songs and how they put their own spin on everything!!! chani's aragon had such amazing command over the crowd and everyone onstage, gaby's boleyn was just so fun and bouncy and sassy and silly (and was my dad's fav!), kelly's Seymour mightve won my heart tonight, her HoS had such power, and her DYNAMICS bro she was controlled and POWERFUL, danielle's cleves had such a levity and whimsy to it, she was a joy to watch, alize's howard... WOW!!!! excellent excellent energy that highlighted such a weariness to the end of AYWD that I LOVED, and ofc tasia's parr was STUNNING, her acting was *chefs kiss* and i was pulled in to her every word!!!!!!!!!

Playing to 100% click no music or band (as you can see). This requires not only the ability to stay solid to a click track but to remember all of your parts 100% without ANY reference. Honestly I take pride in being able to do this because when I’m recording it allows me to focus on my hits and parts to make sure everything is consistent.
