Pumpkin Spice Craving

Day 2 of Clextober 21 - Pumpkin Spice

It’s late at night. Or early in the morning if Lexa felt like pretending she’s awake early instead of late. It’s dreadfully cold outside, autumn settling in harsher this year, windy grey mornings with rainy and freezing afternoons that extend through the night, the work around their tiny farm rushed in the early hours of the day so they can enjoy a cozy afternoon inside by the fire. Lexa enjoys it, a step up from the scalding hot summer that had just passed, and that left her uncomfortable and sweaty every second of the day.

Although, the baby might be more to blame than the actual weather.

Just shy of thirty-four weeks, Lexa finds comfort to be something scarce and short-lived. She misses the sight of her painted toes, the ability to walk more than five steps without needing to catch her breath. Although the cravings are the ones Lexa finds herself hating the most; never has she ever craved food so bad she feels like crying if she does not taste it.

They are manageable for the most part, weirder than they are inconvenient, and even if Clarke will scrunch her nose at Lexa’s request for pancakes drenched in syrup and pickles, she’s always nothing but ready to prepare whatever her pregnant wife asks for without so much as a complaint.

A particularly violent gust of wind hits the window of their bedroom, whistling between the tree tops and making the old glass shake. Clarke moves in her slumber beside her, eyebrows frowning at the sound before she finally settles closer to Lexa, hand gently finding its way on to her bump. Lexa stares at her lovingly, and debates whether she should even try and awaken her peacefully sleeping wife for a simple craving.

She could make it herself; they should have everything she needs in the pantry. It would take time no doubt, the narrow stairs that lead into the hall being a challenge in itself, but it is doable before the alarm clock rings. Or so she hopes.

Clextober Day 1 - Red Orange & Yellow

Lexa quickly turns around, eager to continue the debate, but Clarke is already making her way out of the coffee shop. Clarke spins and leans her back against the door when she gets to the exit, taking a big swig of her latte.

“Should’ve guessed,” she quips with a smirk. Then, the bell above the door dings, and Clarke disappears down the sidewalk, leaving Lexa standing there stunned, annoyed, and if she’s completely honest, mildly impressed.

Happy Clextober2021!

Here is a snippet of Day 1: Red, Orange, and Yellow!

Out of the four seasons Lexa has always loved fall the most. It wasn’t because the world put such an emphasis on magic and witches due to the October Halloween holiday. Most of that was factually incorrect and if anything only annoyed her. Instead her love of fall came from the colors. The reds, oranges, and yellows that the leaves changed too. The small markets that pop up around town that have scarecrows and pumpkins. Those same pumpkins then carved into jack-o-lanterns standing guard on her neighbors front porches. She loved it for the cornfield maze at the edge of town that she got lost in as a small child and cried in until her mom found her. The same maze she has gone back to every year since then. But most of all her love for the fall stems from the overall cozy comfort that she feels during the season. The chilly air that replaces the summer heat and humidity. Early mornings on the balcony with a hot cup of coffee and her favorite blanket wrapped around her as she reads a chapter or two of her book.

This morning was a perfect example of just that only she had one thing better. She had Clarke wrapped up in the blanket with her reading a book of her own. Clarke had officially moved in with Lexa the month before but has had such a crazy month at the hospital that they’ve barely gotten to spend any of their time just relaxing together at home. “How does it feel knowing you have the next four days off?” She asks running her hand up and down Clarkes side, causing the blonde to snuggle further into her. Clarke closes her book and turns her head to settle into Lexa’s chest.

Day 1 - Red, Orange & Yellow All things Fall here. Cozy sweaters, flannel shirts, apple picking, changing seasons, fall festivities, sports team colors, bonfires, hayrides, baking, raking leaves! 

Does Clarke keep stealing Lexa’s favorite orange sweater, much to Lexa’s annoyance? Does Clarke’s red scarf fly off in a blustering autumn breeze only to be returned to her by a striking stranger with chestnut hair and the greenest eyes she’s ever seen? Is Lexa new to town and bumps into the most gorgeous woman she’s ever seen while at the annual Fall Festival? Does Lexa’s neighbor, Clarke, offer to rake her leaves for her, and while Lexa is very particular about her lawn care, she can’t say no because the thought of watching Clarke do manual labor is far too tantalizing? Does Clarke hide in a pile of leaves, waiting patiently to scare Lexa?

Day 2 - Pumpkin Spice Pumpkin patches, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin carving, pumpkin spice candles, all things pumpkins! 

Do Clarke and Lexa brush their hands as they reach for the perfect pumpkin in a pile of pumpkins? Does Clarke mercilessly tease Lexa for her exorbitant candle obsession but finally give in when she stumbles across the decadent scent of pumpkin spice candles? Is Lexa a barista who makes the best pumpkin spice latte on the planet and Clarke just has to stop by every day, for the latte of course, not the alluringly hot girl making it? Does Lexa bake Clarke, her new neighbor, pumpkin muffins as a welcome gift?

Day 3 - Monster Madness Vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, graveyards, aliens, beasts, frankenstein, demogorgons, creatures!

Is Clarke a human suddenly caught up in a civil war between the reigning vampire queen, Lexa, and the werewolves who are trying to overthrow her? Does Clarke lose a bet and has to walk into a graveyard at night, but just as she’s about to totally chicken out, her crush shows up daring her to go with that infuriating eyebrow raise of hers? Are Clarke and Lexa star-crossed lovers, destined to be together but forced apart by ancient traditions? Is Lexa the captain of the USCSS Nostromo, and Clarke is the new Executive Officer who insists it’s a good idea to land on an alien planet? 

Day 4 - It’s Haunted For Sure  Haunted houses, ghosts, urban legends, myths, campfire tales, creepy slumber parties, a spooky thrift store find!

Does Scaredy Cat Clarke try to put on a brave face when her best friend (aka her crush) insists on telling the creepiest stories she’s ever heard at their annual Halloween sleepover? Do Clarke and Lexa attend a haunted house with their respective dates only to wind up clinging to each other instead? Does Clarke buy an old radio from a thrift store when Lexa had a bad feeling about it, only to find out it has a mind of its own? Is Clarke a makeup artist for a haunted house and has to get up close and personal to a VERY gorgeous Lexa? Do Lexa and Clarke buy a house from the 1800s that Lexa insists has charm only to find out the place is being haunted by the little old lady who used to live there? Day 5 - Magic & Mystery Spells, potions, broomsticks, black cats, wishes, curses, witches, magic, murder mystery parties, Clue, escape rooms, unsolved murders, serial killers!

Is Clarke suspicious that Lexa might be a witch because of her massive collection of candles? Does Clarke find an old photograph of a gorgeous woman hidden in a dusty trunk only to be sucked into said picture and meet the mysterious woman from another time? Is Lexa a true crime fanatic who lures her girlfriend on a tour of the most infamous crime scenes in the country? Does Clarke go to a murder mystery party super confident she’ll figure out the murderer before anyone else only to be completely thrown off her game by the annoyingly aloof and beautiful Ms. Scarlett, aka Lexa?

Day 6 - Party Time Costume party shenanigans, clubbing, bobbing for apples, Halloween bar crawl, cider tasting, nighttime festivities! 

Does grumpy Lexa get dragged to a Halloween bar crawl but really start to enjoy it when she keeps running into a progressively tipsier (re: flirtier) Clarke? Does Clarke start a micro-cidery with her friends and decide to launch it on Halloween night, which turns out to be the best idea ever when the reporter assigned to cover the grand opening is none other than her former college crush, Lexa Woods? Do they click at a costume party but have no idea what the other looks like because, duh, costumes? Does one drunkenly confess her love for the other because she’s dressed as Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman isn’t afraid of anything? 

Day 7 - Free Day Happy Halloween, everyone! It’s FREE DAY!

New Rules - Clextober Edition

Day 2 - Pumpkin Spice

A Clextober-inspired mini addition to our Modern AU. It’s wildly out of the timeline for the fic as it is, so we’ll only be posting it here on tumblr for now. If you don’t mind minor spoilers and are in the mood for some short (rated G) fluff, read on below the cut!

"Sorry I'm late."

Clarke apologizes without preamble, ducking into the back of the black Tesla that's become as familiar to her as the back of a yellow cab. She's a fluster of rushed limbs and bags, her purse hanging from one shoulder, her briefcase quickly herded into her lap; she has to grab the corner of her trench coat and tug it into the car before she closes the door on it herself.

Lexa, by contrast, is the very image of serenity. She sits with her ankle over her knee, scrolling through a tablet balanced between both. A travel mug sits in the other hand, today's choice of the six identical mugs she cycles through each week. She doesn't look up as she sips from the top.

"I think you'll be saying that until the day you die," she comments mildly. 

"You're the one who decided to date a lawyer."

With the door closed, her things settled, and Gustus pulling away from the curb, Clarke is finally free to do what she's been itching to do since that morning: Lexa looks up as she turns to her, a soft kind of habit in the motion, and happily accepts a kiss.

It's a quick thing, a moment of casual intimacy that's beautiful in that it's unremarkable. Or rather, it would be unremarkable, if the taste left on Clarke's lips was the expected roast of lukewarm, slightly stale coffee. 

Instead, she's met with a riotous sweetness laced with the smell of coffee, yes, but with hazelnut and nutmeg too. Clarke pulls back and fixes Lexa with a stare; Lexa, who went immediately back to what she was doing, only notices after a beat. 

She eyes Clarke without quite lifting her head, wariness eaking out of the angle of her eyebrows.

"Yes?"

“Is that…” Clarke licks her lips to confirm her suspicions, “pumpkin spice?”

They look at each other in silence for several seconds, Lexa's expression impassive while Clarke's splits into a slow, slow grin. Then Lexa goes back to scrolling.

"Buckle your seatbelt."

“Sweetened pumpkin spice?”

“It’s a pumpkin spice latte,” Lexa says derisively, and lifts the mug to take a pointed sip. “I’m going to tell Gustus to pull over.”

“Fine, fine.” Clarke rolls her eyes, but does as she’s told. Lexa has made good on that threat before. “Though as I recall, you weren’t so concerned with seatbelts the last time we were in the back of this car. Certainly not for their intended purpose.” 

That has the intended effect. Pink creeps up along the edges of Lexa’s collar, and her eyes dart up to the rearview mirror. Gustus doesn’t seem to be paying attention, however.

“A time and a place, Clarke,” she mutters around the mug’s edge.

“Much like a pumpkin spice latte,” Clarke points out with a smirk. It’s far more difficult to enter Lexa’s personal space with her seatbelt on, but Clarke makes do. Her hand catches Lexa’s scrolling fingers and gives them an affectionate squeeze even as she teases, “It’s not even October!”

“Take that up with Starbucks!” Lexa protests. She allows her hand to be pulled into the middle seat between them and, despite her defensiveness, twines her fingers with Clarke’s. “They introduce it earlier every year; I certainly don’t tell them to do so.”

“I had wondered if your mastery of the universe extended to Starbucks, so I’m so glad you’ve clarified.”

Lexa rolls her eyes, but her fingers maintain a tight hold on Clarke’s. That’s been a nice development in the past few months; even when Lexa isn’t entirely focused on Clarke, she’ll often maintain physical contact between them. To remind either Clarke or herself - or perhaps both - that she’s still conscious of and pleased by Clarke’s presence.

“May I ask why you’re drinking a latte at 6pm on a Friday?” Clarke cocks her head as she studies Lexa’s expression. “I was under the impression that we were bound for tapas. That doesn’t strike me as a particularly pumpkin spice adjacent theme.”

“Some of us choose to stay up late to finish work instead of making their partners wait, and need a pick-me-up as a result,” she answers haughtily. But this is a defense; Lexa cuts her eyes hastily at Clarke before much more mutedly admitting, “...and I wasn’t able to have one earlier. They premiered today.”

Clarke chuckles and lifts Lexa’s hand to place a light kiss on her knuckles. “Of course. Next thing I know I’ll find you sneaking Halloween candy in the middle of the night.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” Lexa actually holds Clarke’s gaze after that, and smiles a small, soft smile as she lies: “I wouldn’t sneak it.”

Clextober 2021- Day 5 - Magic & Mystery
