Chapter 9: The Eye of the Storm
No one remained by the tunnel’s entrance, leading Lexa to hope the Polisians who evacuated the city before the tsunami hit had made it out in one piece. However, it seemed an aftershock had since gotten the better of the weakened structure. Tivy’s headlights showed rocks of various sizes all over the road.
“Should we go on foot?” she asked hesitantly. There wasn’t enough space for Tivy, and they would likely be forced to abandon the horses, but pedestrians could climb over the debris and wiggle between the larger boulders. In theory…
“We shouldn’t,” Clarke answered after worrying at her lower lip with her teeth. “There’s no way to know if the path ahead is clear, and without Tivy, we won’t have any light. Besides, if another aftershock hits, we could be buried alive.”
“Fuck. What do we do then? Go over the mountain on foot? It will take us ages, but it’s doable. Xanthus and Balius can carry the weakest among us.”
Clarke sighed long and low before grabbing her laptop. The keyboard click-clacked as she tapped away almost brutally. Lexa wanted to smooth the furrow between her brows with her thumb before it became permanent, but it was neither the time nor the place.
“All right,” Clarke said a minute later. “The good news is Mount Weather is still pretty quiet. There are minimal gas leaks, which is concerning, but not enough to indicate an eruption. We should be good to stay while we wait for help.”

Chapter 8: Survivors
Cold. Darkness. Need for air. Lexa’s brain, fueled by her panic, couldn’t immediately comprehend what had happened and how her day had gone from bad to fatal.
As her instincts pushed her to fight against the waves dragging her away and deeper, she couldn’t tell which way the surface was. Lost in the raging flow too opaque for the sunlight to pierce through, up and down were relative notions.
Something large and hard, likely a tree, hit her in the back. She opened her mouth reflexively to gasp and swallowed a gulp of muddy water. Her stomach and lungs protested violently, making her cough as it burned her airways and esophagus.
I’m going to die, she thought.
The lack of oxygen had her chest contract so hard she wondered if she had cracked her ribs, and for a second, Lexa wished she would lose consciousness. She was tempted to stop struggling. To relax, inhale, and let the water claim her. She let herself float, arms away from her torso, her legs lazily kicking.
Flashes of Aden and Madi’s faces popped behind her closed eyelids. What would happen to her children, already orphaned once, if she died? Anya would take them in, but who knew if her cousin had made it out alive? And to imagine them, traumatized and alone, under her parents’ judgmental and strict watch…
As if she had stuck her fingers into a plug socket, Lexa’s entire body jerked. She couldn’t give up yet. Not as long as her heart beat in her chest.
With an energy born of desperation, she reached her hands ahead and pulled. Again. And again. She repeated the move until stars danced before her eyes and the last bubbles of oxygen left her nose. Until she thought she might have passed out yet continued to kick her legs.

Chapter 6: Mount Weather
The watch buzzed incessantly around Clarke’s wrist until she was forced to open an eye to turn it off. The vibration was, usually, a nicer way to wake up than the blaring of an alarm. That morning, she stared at the device as if it had offended her for a moment before she rolled on her back.
Her hand landed on the cold, empty space next to her, a brutal reminder of her situation. Of the loneliness she hadn’t minded before, but which had become so heavy in recent weeks. Since that night at Lexa’s, when she had held another body all night for the first time in… She couldn’t even remember the previous time; if there was any.
When the urge occasionally became too pronounced to bear, she found someone in a bar or on Tinder to spend a round with in the sheets. Two if they were good. A cute man or woman who kept her warm and, for a moment, distracted her from her solitary life. Clarke was out of the door before they mistook the arrangement for anything more than it was, never staying for cuddles or pillow talks.
Seeing Lexa again had been a mistake. If Clarke hadn’t returned to Polis, time would have eventually cured her of her infatuation. She would have resumed the course of her life, unbothered. Untethered. Instead, those beautiful green eyes haunted her nights and distracted her during the day, reminding her of how screwed she was. Because two evenings together were enough to make it crystal clear—she wanted more. More of Lexa. More time with her and her children. More places and occasions than dinner at the Woods’. Clarke, the poor lonesome scientist from Seattle, didn’t want to be alone anymore.

Chapter 11: A New Start
Clarke checked her reflection in the car’s rearview mirror and adjusted the rebellious lock that refused to stay behind her ear. Would Lexa be partial to her new haircut? The shoulder-length bob had sounded like a good idea at the time, but maybe she shouldn’t have been so impulsive. Her makeup was too obvious. Lexa had seen her without any during most of their time together. Although feminine when the occasion called for it, she was more of a practical girl. Would she find this version of Clarke strange? It was rather new for Clarke herself, and…
“You look as beautiful as you did five minutes ago, honey,” her mother chimed in. “Lexa would have to be blind not to appreciate the sight.”
Abby stared at her daughter with fond amusement as she waited for her to get over her silly panic, perhaps slightly twitchy herself. It was unfamiliar territory for them both. Clarke had never introduced any significant other to her parents, her brief encounters over the years not worth mentioning. And there they were, parked at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, awaiting Clarke’s girlfriend and her two children after a three-week separation.
The morning following the rescue had been overwhelming in many ways. More journalists had heard about their daring escape and requested interviews, and the authorities didn’t know what to do with thousands of people suddenly left with nothing. They set up camps in gymnasiums to host them until a better solution could be found, but it quickly became clear that they hoped the survivors’ families would step in and welcome them. As for those who couldn’t rely on the family, like Anya and Lexa, well…

Chapter 10: A World in Fire
Lexa woke with a smile on her face and a delicious ache between her thighs. Clarke’s arm, tightly wrapped over her waist, kept her warm and pressed against her body as if she had feared Lexa would disappear during the night. She remained there for a few minutes, enjoying the calm morning and the quietness around them. After the devastation of the day before, the cries, the sound of broken glass, and the thunder-like roar of the ocean crashing over Polis, the silence was relaxing. Until it suddenly became unbearable, and Lexa twitched.
“Shh,” Clarke whispered in her hair. She pulled Lexa closer, although it hadn’t seemed possible a second before, and placed a kiss on her neck.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“It’s fine.” Clarke yawned before nuzzling Lexa’s nape. “Are you okay?”
Lexa had been up to a minute before. She felt silly as she admitted in a small voice, “It’s too quiet. I don’t know why it bothers me. My house’s the same, and that was never an issue.”
Clarke didn’t immediately reply. She wiggled back and tugged on Lexa’s flank until Lexa turned around to face her. One of her fingers caressed the side of Lexa’s jaw down to her chin, gently forcing her to raise her head so their eyes met.
“I slept with the light on for weeks after returning from Japan,” she said. “The eruption released a massive cloud of ash that obscured the sky for miles, so… It’s okay to feel whatever you’re feeling. I won’t judge you for that considering I’m still not a fan of the dark, although it got better thanks to therapy.”

Chapter 5: Evening at the Woods’
Clarke swallowed back a yawn as she parked in front of the city hall, her obnoxiously large truck standing out in the almost empty parking lot.
After her long journey and two nights spent on Tivy’s relatively comfortable floor, she had slept like a baby. And jolted awake when her alarm rang, with drool down her chin and bed hair worthy of a picture. Even two coffees and a toast later, she wished she could return to the soft bedding of Polis Hotel and resume her dreams. Hopefully, she would find herself in Lexa’s arms once again.
Clarke stepped out of Tivy and headed for the entrance, determined to make the day count. The city hall should have records of past eruptions and earthquakes in its archives. Not that the Earth’s moves and tantrums were easy to predict. But she would feel better knowing she had done everything in her power to ensure the locals—Lexa and her family—were safe.
Before Clarke could reach the doorknob, it opened abruptly to reveal a tall, thin woman with hair so blond it was almost white. The icebergs she had observed the year before gave off more warmth than the pale blue eyes that sneered at Tivy before refocusing on her.
“Is that your vehicle?”
Curbing a shiver, Clarke squinted defensively and withheld her hand. “Yes. Dr. Clarke Griffin. I’m here to consult the city hall’s archives regarding—”
“Mayor Nia Queen.”
Like an iron gauntlet, the emphasis on the title landed heavily between the two women. Ready to take up the unspoken challenge, Clarke bristled until Lexa’s previous mentions of the mayor came back to her. This was the woman she needed to convince evacuation drills weren’t a waste of time. Lives could depend on it.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” she said with a plastic smile. “I was hoping to run into you. As you might know, I was here when the hurricane hit three months ago.”
Mrs. Queen pinched her lips and glanced at Tivy. “Yes, I thought I recognized this monstrosity. What brings you back here? We spent tens of thousands of dollars on repairs after the storm. I hope you’re not here to tell me we should expect another one.”

Chapter 7: Nature’s Wrath
Clarke frowned at the report on her laptop. She switched from picture to picture with deepening concern, checking and rechecking her findings until the letters blurred. After hours spent in front of her laptop, she could feel the beginning of a migraine build behind her eyes, but her research mattered more. Lives could be at stake. Lexa’s life could be at stake.
They had gone on two dates over the previous week, plus a lovely day on the beach with Aden and Madi, and Clarke would have been hard-pressed to hide the extent of her feelings. She was falling for Lexa. Hard. Ridiculously hard. So, she would do everything in her power to keep her and her children safe, even if that meant facing a dragon.
Clarke swallowed the rest of her long-turned cold coffee, closed her laptop, and strode out.
The café was located near the city hall, and Clarke chose to walk rather than park Tivy in front of the building. Mayor Queen had made her dislike for the vehicle plain during their last encounter, and Clarke needed her in her best mood—if such a thing was possible.
Getting the mayor’s assistant—a sulky albeit pretty dark-haired woman who looked as if she wanted to gouge Clarke’s eyes out for daring to interrupt her boss—to add her last minute to Mrs. Queen’s schedule took some convincing, and Clarke was already jumpy by the time she made it into the large, richly decorated office.
“Ms. Baldwin,” Mrs. Queen greeted with a sneer, barely glancing at Clarke before refocusing on the evidently important files open on her desk.

Chapter 4: Return to Polis
The armored truck swallowed the miles leading to the tunnel running through the mountains. The one heading back to Polis. Back to a certain green-eyed sheriff too amazing to forget.
Clarke hummed the song on the radio and did her best to ignore how her heart rate increased as the distance between them diminished. How her fingers tapped faster and faster on the wheel with each passing minute.
She had hesitated for days before deciding to return to Polis. Would Lexa understand? Would she be happy to see her? Clarke had promised her a night free of consequences. Showing up unannounced after three months felt like a betrayal. Not that Lexa had any reason to be embarrassed. Nothing had happened between them. Not really. And, ultimately, it wasn’t a courtesy call. Clarke had a job to do. One many lives could depend on one day.
Yet, she couldn’t help but look forward to seeing Lexa again. Despite her best efforts, the woman continued to occupy her thoughts whenever Clarke let her guard down. When she was tired, lonely in a hotel bed, bored while studying reports and measures. When she touched herself and imagined how those long, elegant fingers would feel inside her…
The tunnel exit came into view, and a “Welcome to Polis” sign greeted her before she could sort out her emotions.

Chapter 1: Meeting in a Hurricane
“A hurricane is coming. Please remain inside and barricade your windows. I repeat; a hurricane is coming. Please—”
The car slowly driving around the main streets of Polis, CA, swerved to avoid a flying tile. Sheriff Lexa Woods swore under her breath before bringing the megaphone’s mic back to her mouth as if nothing had happened.
“Please remain inside. Do not go out. Barricade your windows and stay safe.”
Lexa let go of her mic and squinted through her windshield. She had hoped until the last minute hurricane Becca would deviate and miss her town, but no such luck. The storm hit with frightening accuracy, bringing squalls and a rain so heavy that her wipers couldn’t keep up and she could barely see where she was heading.
Worry grew in the pit of her stomach as the wind intensified and debris flew around. Her children were at school, and she wished she could be with them, making sure they were safe. But she had a job to do, stubborn people to warn. Besides, she reminded herself, Aden and Madi were as safe in school as they would be at home if not more. Their teachers would know to keep them away from the windows.
On the plus side, most of her fellow Polisians remained diligently inside, and she had to order surprisingly few people to seek shelter. Harassing Mayor Queen to sound the storm alarm had paid off. It was almost worth the passive-aggressive comments she would receive for days to come for telling Her Majesty how to rule her city.
A few broken branches landed near her car, making her curse. Hopefully, her deputies were safe and back at the station. There wasn’t much more they could do until the hurricane abated. Getting themselves hurt out of sheer stubbornness would serve no one.
Exhausted, Lexa turned around and headed back for the city hall, repeating her message on the megaphone.
She was crossing Forest Street and Main when something unusual caught her attention and made her hit the brakes.
In the center of a mostly empty parking lot, an obnoxious armored vehicle occupied two spots. Bigger than a Ford truck, with spikes dug into the ground — the owner would have to pay for the repair — and a turret. It looked like one of those trucks Lexa had seen on video, the kinds driven by adrenaline junkies hoping to go viral on the Internet.
Fuming, she turned on her megaphone. “Please exit your vehicle and seek shelter immediately. I repeat; please exit your vehicle and seek shelter in the nearest building.”
Lexa assumed she had been mistaken when she received no answer. She would have resumed her journey if a tuft of fair hair visible through the turret window hadn’t suddenly betrayed a presence.
“Oh, that does it.”
