After a long day, Clement returned home to the elegant apartment his girlfriend had gotten for them. He turned on the light and noticed a piece of paper on the kitchen table. He went over and read it. On it was a message from Sandy:

He reached into his pocket for his cell phone to see if she had actually called him. It's no surprise that he didn't pick it up, since the phone was completely dead. He put it on the charger on the nightstand next to the bed in the bedroom, then went back to the kitchen and took off his leather jacket, which he threw carelessly on the barstool. He went to the fridge and got himself a bottle of cold beer. He sat down on the couch in the living room and turned on the TV, which was playing an old classic movie on one of the channels. He took his gun from his back pocket and placed it on the coffee table to make himself more comfortable. With the beer in one hand and the remote control in the other, he sat back and surfed the channels. He managed to find one that showed documentaries about notorious murderers. This pleased him and began to watch, while he slowly drank his beer. Not long after, due to alcohol and fatigue, he fell into a deep sleep.

He found himself in a stranger's kitchen, which looked like it had been taken out of an IKEA catalogue. At first, he didn't understand it, but then he remembered: a few days ago, he and Sweety had scouted where their next, potential rich mark lived. The rich guy's kitchen obviously didn't look like this in real life, but this is how it was pictured in Clement's subconscious.

"Is anyone here?" he asked, but when there was no answer, he went to the fridge and looked in to see if he could find some "dream beer". There was plenty of drinks on offer and when he was about to get a bottle for himself, he heard a deep voice behind him.

"Who the hell are you?"

He turned as fast as he could and in the dim light he saw a blond figure wearing sunglasses and a long gray coat with a knife in his hand. As a first reaction, he reached back for his gun, but he didn't have it, so as another idea, he took out a bottle from the fridge and threw it at the stranger, who only had to bend slightly in order to not be hit.

"Stop!" said the man and walked closer to him.

"I'll ask you one more time: who are you?" he asked angrily. Clement didn't understand who this was or how he got there. What was certain that it was not the rich guy, as he was bigger and had darker hair.

When he realized that he was only dreaming, he said.

"I could ask the same thing!"

"Me? My name is The Corinthian.” replied the stranger, pointing at himself with his sharp knife.

”The Corinthian? What kind of fucking name is that, are you a performer? Because if so, I'm sorry, but I've never heard of you." Clement replied phlegmatically. The knife man continued.

"I'm a nightmare and I'm supposed to kill a big guy, but you're not him."

Clement's eyes lit up.

"Nightmare? Kill? Hm, then it looks like our situation is similar, because I am also a murderer. I mean, in real life, not in dreams. And my name is Clement.” he said, a little more relaxed.

"Really?" Corinthian looked in front of him questioningly. "Interesting. Then that's why you didn't run away from me like others did."

Clement looked at the fridge. "Would you like something to drink?" he asked politely. Corinthian didn't ask for a drink, so Clement didn't get himself one either. "I think we should sit down at the dining table and talk for a bit, I'm interested in this knife-nightmare thing."

They both sat opposite each other and started talking.

"Tell me about yourself!" Clement said excitedly.

"Do you know who The Sandman is?" Corinthian asked.

"Well, I know the Metallica song, if that counts." Corinthian scratched his head.

"Close enough. The Sandman, the King of Dreams, is the one who lulls you to sleep. You, humans, enter The Dreaming in your dreams, where he, I, and many other dreams and nightmares come from. I am his creation, I just ran away from there.” Clement listened to the story with interest.

"Wow! You know, I don't believe in hocuspocus stories, but this sounds really exciting. When and why did you run away?”

"A long time ago, to find out what it feels like to be human." said the nightmare, spinning the knife on the table.

"Well, if you ask me, it's fucking awesome to be human! Drinks, cool old cars and music, hot women, what else do you want, right?” he asked him with a big grin. "And then you kill with that knife?"

"Well, as a matter of fact, I only scare people in their dreams, I kill in real life. I will stab them and then eat their eyes with my teeth-eyes.” Corinthian said casually. The grin slowly faded from Clement's face and he looked in confusion.

"What?"

"You heard me right."

Clement leaned back in his chair and eyed Corinthian suspiciously.

"Are you telling me that you have teeth instead of eyes? Are you fucking serious?” the nightmare nodded.

"Oh come on! I believe it when I see it!" he said and the nightmare lifted his sunglasses and indeed, in place of his eyes, there were small teeth, the same as his own, in his mouth. Clement almost fell over with the chair, so shocked at the sight.

"What in the fucking hell is that?" Do you see anything at all, I mean, how, HOW?” he searched for words.

"Just so you know, I can see perfectly, even better than you." Corinthian said still in his usual chill manner.

"Come to think of it, that's both the most fucked up and coolest thing I've ever seen." Clement said laughing. He also felt a little embarrassed for reacting to the unusual eyes like that. After all, this was just a dream, so nothing should startle him!

"Well, you've heard enough about me, now tell me about yourself. You said you were a murderer too.”

"Yes. I kill, but only if I have to, or if someone fucks up my mind. I'm originally from Oklahoma, but I've been in Detroit for a while. I have done a few things back home that made me earn the ’Oklahoma Wildman’ name. Now, me and my buddy, Sweety have Judge Guy’s little book to extort money from rich people and if someone doesn't want to pay…” he said with his fingers imitating a gun shot. Corinthian found this interesting, but Clement himself even more so. Actually, he really liked him…

Clement continued.

"Until we get our money, we'll stay here, but later when we have it, me and my girlfriend, Sandy, will go to Aruba."

"Really? What does she look like?” the nightmare asked and Clement took out his phone and showed him a sexy bikini picture of the blonde girl.

After some awkward silence, Clement continued the conversation.

"Let's talk about something else, let's say, music. Who do you love, who do you listen to?"

"Um, I don't really have a favorite, I'm an omnivore. I mean, when it comes to music.” Corinthian hoped he had caught the hint. "In fact, I don't really listen to music, I don't have time for it. Why, what kind of music do you like?”

"Classics, mainly rock and funk rock. Among the newer ones, my absolute favorite is The White Stripes. All their songs are fucking good, Jack White is a genius!”

"Yeah, they're good." agreed Corinthian, though his thoughts began to wander…

"In fact, I sing, too!" Clement said excitedly like a little kid. "Would you like to hear my voice? I am interested in your opinion!"

Corinthian honestly would have preferred to do anything else, but ended up agreeing to listen to him. This dream could not have been more surreal, and this thought came from him, who was not an ordinary being himself.

"Um, okay, let me hear it."

Clement performed Seven Nation Army with the enthusiasm of being in the finals of a talent show.

"So, how was it?" he asked after singing, waiting for the evaluation.

"Well, I've heard worse," Corinthian said with a shrug.

unpopular opinion about each Boyd?

I’d like to preface this by stating that these are just my subjective opinions, and I have zero issues with someone having a different take! For instance, I do love me some fluffy Stavier! But… here we go!

Steve Murphy: I don’t think Stavier would be very fluffy!! Steve and Javi have a pretty combative and complicated relationship - they don’t fully trust each other, they’ve regularly gone behind each other’s backs, and there’s just a lot of general friction between their personalities. I see a lot of sweet and wholesome Stavier in the fandom, but personally, I think if you introduce sex into an already tense and fraught relationship (which theirs absolutely is) it’s not likely to help!

Donald Pierce: Pierce really wants to be the good guy. I think it’s easy to overlook, because he’s so much the villain in Logan, and he’s kind of an unrepentant prick, but I think he’s actually being very genuine when he calls himself and his team the “good guys” to Caliban. Pierce is someone that idolized mutants like the X-Men! It seems like he’s fully bought into Rice’s mission statement about the importance of their work! I think deep down he probably knows some of the shit he’s doing is… not exactly heroic (to me, it sort of seems like he very quickly loses a lot of steam after Gabby is killed, culminating in a very manic interrogation of Caliban before mostly just… going fairly subdued for the rest of the movie), but he’s not great at figuring out the “right thing” on his own.

Cap Hatfield: Something weird and uncomfortable happened between him and Jim when he was younger. I think that’s why he lashes out so suddenly and uncharacteristically when Jim is whipping Nancy. Cap’s usually someone who’s intensely obedient and devoted to his family! And it’s not like he has a relationship with Nancy that would compel him to defend her! It’s an interesting moment, and makes me squint suspiciously at Jim.

Clement Mansell: Clement is actually the softest of the Boyd’s! This doesn’t negate the fact that’s he’s also an impulsive, violent, and mildly deluded criminal, but he *is* soft. He wears his heart on his sleeve, he’s openly desperate for attention and connection, and he can be very easily manipulated by someone giving those to him.

The Corinthian: Oh jeez. So, my unpopular opinion for Cori is that people tend to conflate Holbrook’s portrayal of him with how he is in the comics. Holbrook’s Corinthian is actually more similar to the second Corinthian – in the comics, the first Corinthian is a pretty crude and uncomplicated sort of predator, lacking in a lot of the layers other writers would eventually give his successor. A lot of the stuff people adore about Corinthian – his vulnerability, his connection with Jed, his politeness, even his sexuality – aren’t really taken from the first Cori in the comics.

I always raise my eyebrow a bit when I see people arguing comics!Cori is the patron saint of gay men, or better rep than Netflix!Corinthian because he’s specifically homosexual vs Netflix!Cori who’s more… omnivorous. The Corinthian from the comics is specifically stated to be into boys; not twinky young men - underage boys. And based on Nightmare Country, Corinthian 2 still favors that demographic for victim/plaything, despite his tastes having expanded beyond just that. And don’t get me wrong, I think comics Cori is still a really fun character! And ~problematic~ characters are delightful! But… I do think there’s a contingent of the fandom that kind of whitewashes comic!Cori because they loved Holbrook’s portrayal so much.

Eli Klaber: I think Klaber’s a little more resilient than people give him credit for (including myself!). He’s a dumbass, and he’s absolutely desperate to belong, but I get the sense things just… aren’t as complicated for him as they tend to be for the other Boyd’s (maybe because he’s kinda dumb!). I don’t think there’s much internal conflict in him, and I think a lot of stress that might destabilize other Boyd’s generally bounces right off him.

Ty Shaw: Ty’s family is dysfunctional as fuck. Yes, they love each other, and yes, they have plenty of good traits, but also, there’s… some things going on under the surface. Granny pretty dismissively calls her deceased granddaughter “a huge pill-popper”, the mom seems to entrust her son, Ty, with the management of the house/family, and at one point she gives an odd little speech about how life is just a series of regrets. Despite how close-knit the family seemed, they definitely kept some big secrets from each other, and the massive age gaps between the kids, plus the way Ty explicitly says he’s the only man in Abby’s life, makes me wonder about the Shaw family history.

Quinn McKenna: He loves Rory in his own way, but he doesn’t like him very much. The movie ended with the two of them seemingly on better terms, but tbh I don’t expect that to last. Quinn didn’t really seem like he had any huge perspective shift or change of heart about his kid or his role in his life, and I fully believe that once things get frustrating for him again (and they will), he’s gonna pull back. He just isn’t parent material.

@windsweptinred dear, the time travel idea is absolutely stunning and I adore it!! 💓💓 I agree wholeheartedly, I am particularly tickled too by seeing Daniel interacting with the First Corinthian and in this regard I remember reading a writing prompt a while back that made me think of a funny scenario: Morpheus, having retired to live in the Waking World, has taken the First Corinthian with him as his guardian (both have feelings for each other without these ever being revealed). They have to meet and go on some mission together with Daniel and the Second (which act practically as a married couple without realizing it). Various screwups happen, with the First trying to flirt with Daniel to make Morpheus jealous; the Second being on the verge of cutting his predecessor's throat out of jealousy; Morpheus just wanting to enjoy his retirement in peace; and Daniel, as a good millennial, not understanding what the heck is going on!

Your idea for the fake/forced marriage is also amazing!! 👌👌👌 this is one of my favorite tropes, I was also thinking of a story in which Daniel is (for some strange reasons) forced to take a consort so he asks for help from his very own trusted Nightmare, who although dying at the mere thought of someone taking Daniel away from him, decides to help in the search. But all the candidates turn out to be inadequate and in the end Daniel realizes that the ideal consort he was looking for and had in mind is indeed the Corinthian 😭💐👰

I was thinking also of something darker, actually I have this idea set in a psychiatric penitentiary, where Corinthian is interned for obvious reasons, and where Daniel is interned too (by mistake? who knows). The boy immediately attracts the attention of our serial killer, initially for unvirtuous motives but then because the Corinthian realizes that this boy with angelic, delicate features can be as merciless and bloodthirsty as he is. Love and gore galore (and an escape, as befits the most romantic love stories 👨‍❤️‍💋‍👨)

P. S. can't wait to read the new chapter of TOTW, the idea of using the Walker siblings memories is really great!!!! 🔝

corinthiel au: what scenarios/tropes do you think would be perfect for our beloved boys? ❤️

Oooohhh, so many. But one that's been rotating in my mind recently is Time travel shinnanigans. Essentially... A Dream switch.

Pick up Morpheus and put him after the fact, say even during the time of Nightmare Country when everything has settled down into a new normality. And put Daniel into Dolls House/Lost Hearts. Morpheus with the new Corinthian (2.0) and Daniel with the original... Trying to find their way back to where they should be. Imagine the exploration into characters and the compare and contrast of Corintheus and Corinthiel you could do! Not to mention the deep, slowly burn realisation the Corinthian's/ Dream's can come to. Being presented with an alternate version of the other, the same yet different. And coming to understand/ appreciate their own all the more for it. You could also really have fun playing with the world at large around them, how Dream siblings, residents of the Dreaming etc would react to the return of Morpheus and the arrival of Daniel.

(I'd actually been contemplating using a similar kind of conversation exchange in the Winter chapter of TOTW, using the Walker siblings memories....My mind is obbsessing over Daniel interacting with the the original version of the Corinthian.)

Another one for funsies 🤔... Fake/forced marriage all the way. The arrival of a new Dream has all the advantageous suitors banging at the castle doors. Daniel has enough on his plate to deal with, without this. And it's slowly sending the Corinthian into a maddening protective/possessive frenzy. The answer, well because of some ancient law (cough made up bollocks Daniel came up with in the fly cough) and their complicated history, The Corinthian actually laid claim to Daniel somewhere down the line, so technically he's already engaged... Definitely off the marriage market... Sorry, what can you do? Lol.

Cue the usual hijinks of each having the other but thinking their true feelings aren't returned. Despite it being obvious to everyone else and their second cousin once removed that they're crazy for each other. Extra points if the Corinthian has no clue it's a ruse, sending him into spiraling thoughts about how knowingly or not, he's 'trapped' Daniel. The selfish intent must have been there. Is he really any better then his previous incarnation?

Oooh, oooh, anon asks! For the Boyd Holbrook Characters' Union, after a rough scene of any sort, what kind of comfort/aftercare would be most effective for each one?

Steve Murphy: Ooh I get the sense Steve gets a little snappish on the heels of a rougher scene. He’s feeling a little brittle, but maybe can’t always tolerate a ton of overt comfort - he’d like to get the chance to distract himself by burying his attention in his work for a little! If his partner sticks around while he does that, and maybe silently fixes him a drink and eventually gives him a neck massage when he’s ready, that’s ideal for Steve!!

Donald Pierce: Oh Pierce absolutely wants comfort and sweetness, but he does *not* want his partner to directly mention the scene, besides maybe a fond, apologetic “aw, baby, sorry for hurting you”. He doesn’t want a debrief, he doesn’t want to have to say what parts he liked or didn’t. He just wants to cuddle against someone, and have them bring him snacks and let him pick the movie while they pet his hair and act like they adore him. They’ve gotta act sort of grateful he let them use him!

Cap Hatfield: Aww, I think it depends how zonked Cap is after. If he’s really tired, he’d like to curl up next to his partner and sleep back-to-back. Otherwise, if he’s got some energy in him, he’d very much appreciate some alone time. Perhaps his partner could maybe clean his gun or shine his shoes while he’s off in the woods, though? That would be nice.

Clement Mansell: Oh man, if there’s any sort of degradation or meanness in the scene, it’s absolutely imperative his partner almost immediately assures him that they didn’t mean any of it. They think Clement is great! Clement is their favorite! Of course they don’t think he’s <X thing they told him earlier>! Yes, they would love to hear Clement sing, that’d be awesome.

The Corinthian: Here’s the thing, the Corinthian definitely appreciates some cuddles after a rough scene, but he’s also hella liable to be snappish and often downright lethal after being put through the sexual wringer. Maybe he’ll hurt you physically! Maybe he’ll just hurt your feelings! Maybe he’ll melt into your arms! Hard to say!! It’s a gamble!!

Eli Klaber: Klaber appreciates being pampered! Nothing makes him feel better than his partner treating him like a princess after some rough play – drawing him a hot bath, getting him some wine, maybe giving him a foot rub.

Ty Shaw: Aww Ty likes physical affection! Cuddles! Massages! Smooches! But he *also* loves being taken out on an actual facts date after. Steve Murphy: Oh definitely the old Lone Ranger television show. After that Steve always knew he wanted to be a cop, but that “hero cowboy” image never left him. He wants to help people, and have friends like Tonto! And maybe ride cool horses too! In his ideal world it’s just him and his super-intimate bestie/partner, going around restoring justice to lawless places.

Donald Pierce: This is sort of a two-part, because I think as a kid the most formative media for him was absolutely X-Men comics, and Wolverine, specifically, shaped his image of masculinity and what a man should be (and also, what an ideal male partner looks like…!). *But* Pierce also watched Clueless during a sleepover with his high school girl BFF, and the character Christian made him feel so many things; this is someone that got to be gay with no repercussions, who got to stay friends and go shopping and be sassy with the pretty popular girl, and also got to be tough and masculine and heroic when the situation called for it! It seemed like an awesome life, but so unattainable and embarrassing to want that he tries not to think about it. He hasn’t watched Clueless since, but it’s still lodged deep in his subconscious.

Cap Hatfield: When he was a kid his mom used to tell him fairy tales to soothe him to sleep, and the one that stuck around in his head the most was Little Red Riding Hood. Except, he never knew for sure if he was supposed to relate to the woodsman, the wolf, or the girl – when he ran around the woods with Jim and his brothers he’d pretend to be all of them at different times.

Clement Mansell: The Cat Stevens song Father and Son made Clement cry *so* many times as a kid. It’s stuck in his brain forever, and he sometimes fantasized about his dad singing it to him if he found him again. Also, when Clement was googling this song one day he ended up running across the Russian film Father and Son, about a father and son who live together and love each other so deeply it becomes borderline incestuous. He… really, really likes this one too.

The Corinthian: I think Corinthian *is* the formative media.

Eli Klaber: Some Like it Hot! This one is a bit of an anomaly because Klaber would’ve been in his late 20’s when it came out, but I think this was still *very* formative for him. A man who crossdresses and is deemed beautiful and desirable enough to be pursued by a millionaire who still considers him a real woman even after he finds out?? Yeah, this changed Klaber’s brain chemistry forever.

Ty Shaw: For Ty, it was the Boxcar Children. Even though his mom was *technically* in the picture, he and Abby had to learn to be independent real fast, and they both latched onto this series because it made independence and abandonment feel a bit like an adventure. And he especially really liked how all the kids took care of each other and make their own home. (Ty always stops reading before they go to live with their grandfather, that part always takes away the magic for him.)

Quinn McKenna: You’d think it would be some fast-paced action movie featuring buff 80’s superstars, but no, Quinn found his dad’s copy of Battle Tactics of the Western Front: The British Army's Art of Attack, 1916-18, by Paddy Griffith and was hooked ever since.
