"Moomin and its casual relationship with religion/Christianity is something that's truly understated by the fandom or forgotten about entirely and I think it's one of the more fascinating aspects to dive into. I dunno, I could ramble about for quite a bit."
Please do! I would love to hear it. If thou wished so. That is.
Okay SO.
I'm gonna elaborate in that I don't know what Tove's relationship to religion/Christianity is? I know she had a Jewish friend who had to flee the country in WW2 and she probably celebrated Easter and Christmas but otherwise I haven't read anything on her views of religion or what flavor of Christian she is, so I'm just going to base this entire post on what we see within the franchise and try not to speculate on what the Janssons believed.
But like, anyway, the subject of religion in Moomin is pretty subtle in that uhhhh
... maybe it's not too subtle... but I blame it on people not reading the books or comics and watching the 90s and 2019 series as it is almost clean of religious dialog or plot points except for, like, the existence of Christmas I guess.
And the existence of Christmas instead of, like, some unchristian equivalent to it in Moominland is telling in itself. What alot of people don't realize that despite all the magic and shenaniganery that happens in Moominvalley, Moominland is still a sort of.... slightly tweaked, absurdist portrait of the real world. In the books there are references to Mexico, America, Finland itself; Moomintroll mentions venetian curtains which implies the existence of Venice, Tarzan as a pop culture icon is referenced. In the comics the Moomins time travel to Wild West era southern USA, ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, they wanted to travel to 18th century France but they forgot to switch the location, there are references to Soviet Russia and Australia gets mentioned and the Moomins travel to a Mediterranean beach town which is basically a fusion of 2 real life Spanish towns down to the combined naming (Although Majorca also still exists??), brands like Old Smuggler's and Lyle's Gold Syrup and Maxwell House and Lipton get shown directly on the pages... so many other things... point is, Moomin isn't a fantasy world separated from the real one and with all of this you can't argue about alternate origins of the Christmas holiday, it just is there as it is celebrated in the real world.
In Comet in Moominland, Sniff name-drops the Moses of the Bible in reference to Snufkin being found in a basket like him and the kids have a conversation about how dangerous it was to send a baby down a river:
‘Haven’t you got a mother?’ asked Moomintroll looking very sorry for him.
‘I don’t know.’ said Snufkin. ‘They tell me I was found in a basket.’
‘Like Moses,’ said Sniff.
‘I like the story about Moses,’ said the Snork. ‘But I think his mother could have found a better way of saving him don’t you? The crocodiles might have eaten him up.’
‘They nearly ate us up,’ said Sniff.
‘Moses’ mother could have hidden him in a box with air-holes,’ said the Snork maiden.
‘That would have kept the crocodiles out.’
Mr. Hemulen begs the heavens to protect and preserve him:
‘Heaven protect me!’ gasped the Hemulen,
(...)
‘Oh, heaven preserve me!’ exclaimed the Hemulen,
In Finn Family Moomintroll, Muskrat makes more tangible references to Heaven:
(...) the Muskrat gloomily sucking his moustache. 'The earth can crack and fire come down from heaven for all I care (...)
(...)
'(...) Well, I hope the Muskrat heaven is a peaceful place, because I shan't be here much longer.'
In Moominpappa's Memoirs, the Ghost name-drops Hell:
"By all the Hounds of Hell," began the ghost,
In Moominsummer Madness Mymble Jr believes they're going to die and euphemistically mentions Heaven while Little My whines about having to go:
‘That’s the very least,’ replied the Mymble’s daughter. ‘Try to be good now if you can find the time, because in a little while we’re all going to heaven.’
‘Heaven?’ asked Little My. ‘Do we have to? And how does one get down again?’
Emma the Stage Rat says rest in peace for her late husband:
‘Really, thank goodness,’ she cried, ‘thank goodness that my beloved husband, Stage Manager Fillyjonk (mayherestinpeace) can’t see you all! You don’t know a thing about the theatre, that’s clear, less than nothing, not even the shadow of a thing!’
In Tales From Moominvalley, Mymble says My wouldn't go to heaven if she keeps swearing:
‘If you say things like that you’ll never go to heaven,’ the Mymble started instantly,
Snufkin euphemistically uses Heaven while telling the story about his mother's aunt;
Her wonderful belongings gave her no comfort. On the contrary, they only made her think of the day when she’d go to heaven and leave them all behind her
And Sniff echoes this twice;
[Snufkin said] '(...) feeling rather like a balloon, a happy balloon ready to fly away…’
‘To heaven,’ Sniff observed drily. ‘Now, listen…’
(...)
‘I know, I know,’ Sniff said crossly. ‘You’re exactly like Moomintroll. I know how it turned out. Then one evening she gave away her bed too and then she went off to heaven and was so happy, and the right thing for me to do is to give away not only Cedric but everything I have and then hand in my spade and bucket on top of it all!’
And of course, Tales From Moominvalley has the entire short story about Christmas.
Of course, I could be missing or forgetting alot from the books but it paints a very clear picture, I think. And then in the comics...
The use of words like sin and damned and religious exclamations are used alot throughout the comic, and I can't even show all the examples I have collected because of the picture limit, but it's there.
The Black Prophet in Moomin Begins a New Life uses religious language and quite literally lives in a place called Puritan Street, he claims that any form of enjoyment or self-satisfaction is sin, such as looking attractive or eating food you like, and that one must live life in according to one's duty and the betterment of society as opposed to the hedonist view of the White Prophet to abandon all law and order and do only what one pleases.
The plot of the Lars comic Sniff Goes Good founds itself in the event of Sniff having an implied nightmare about going to hell and takes it as a sign that he should morally correct himself.
Moominpappa kept using the word damn (and damned and the blazes) throughout Moomin and the Sea.
The strange thing about the comics is that it uses alot of religious exclamations but replaces God/Lord or Jesus with Edward the Booble which is a really fascinating implication about Boobles in this world but that's beside the point, Groke is also used for more negative exclamations. Just about the only time I remember a character using God/Lord in the comics is that panel of Moominmamma saying Oh Lordy as shown above, otherwise references to God or Jesus themselves are very much missing, I don't know if it's something to do with newspaper censors or what (I could swear there was maybe a cross or a reference to the Devil somewhere in the Lars comics but I can't remember where).
None of the characters seem explicitly religious, atleast with their language, there's no church in Moominvalley or crosses thrown about, which...
Makes the 1969 Moomin series and its reboot, New Moomin, absurdly funny.
DO DO-DO-DO DO DO DOOOOO...
DUN-DUN!
DUN DUN!
DU-DUUUUNNNNN...!!
(yes that is a real church, part of a whole episode's plot, it has the cross and everything on top, I just couldn't get a better shot of it than this)
As someone who has watched the subtitled episodes available for each series I can say that it is... hilarious whenever it pops up. The usage of Christianity in such a heavy-handed way throughout the shows is very amusing but also fascinating.
It's important to consider that these are a japanese production, and these days, Japan only 1% of the population is self-proclaimed Christian despite the celebration of Christmas and the Christian-style weddings they perform. I couldn't get exact data on Japanese religion in the 20th century but it's doubtful that Mushi Productions, the studio that made these shows and is based in Tokyo, was particularly influenced by the religious colonialism of western Japan (please correct me if I'm wrong, I know I'm not a historian but this stuff fascinates me).
The absurd presentation of these elements feel like it comes from a fascination with the religion than any tangible experience on how mundane, rural European Christians act or believe? Like it's kind of parodying it to get across the fact that this is supposed to be taking place in Europe? The praying, the constant references to Heaven (unrelated to death), Hell, God or the Devil, Snufkin and Moomintroll compelling the Hobgoblin with the Power of Christ, the church that was never in the source material, it's all a bit tacky and I love it??
This element is less present in New Moomin probably due to criticism but it's still very much there. It's probably one of the stranger bits of the series besides the violence of Moomin 1969, but like the rest of the adaptation it feels like it's done in earnest despite its lack of adherence to the source material.
...
All this to say, there's probably a Moomin Jesus who died for their Moomin sins in canon and that is still absurdly funny to think about in an abstract sense after all this time.

Mowing Lawns
Thanks to @leprecon98 for pointing this one out.
There’s a business card or magnet on one of the fridges we see in “Pass the Parcel” for Roy’s Mowing. This is based on a real business.
Jim’s Mowing is a franchise-operation lawn-mowing company in Australia, with a logo similar to the one in Bluey.
They also operate franchises that do other services like house cleaning.
According to Google, the average hourly rate across Australia for mowing lawns is approximately $55 AUD.
Lucky’s Dad needs this company, look at his lawn here.
One last bonus lawnmower pic, from the bonus content on the DVD box set.

Thoughts on the upcoming Garfield Movie (2024) [SUPER LONG POST]
Chances are, unless you've been living in a remote cave in the mountains, you are aware that there's a new Garfield movie coming out in 2024. Yes, that's right. Twenty whole years after the disastrous live-action movie, and seventeen years following that film's sequel, and we are treated to the fat cat's antics on the big screen once more -- In full animation, no less.
However, you're probably aware of another quite notable aspect of this upcoming popcorn flick. An aspect of the film that has drummed up endless controversy, and it's the fact that the titular feline is voiced by none other than the internet's favorite punching bag, Chris Pratt.
Now, something like this isn't new. I remember when The Super Mario Bros. Movie was in the works, and they announced the cast, hearing the fact that this far-from-Italian man was going to be playing one of the most prolific video game characters of our time no doubt turned many people off. (It certainly didn't help that the trailers for said film showed him speaking in a so-called "normal voice") But once the film actually came out people had already started to warm up to him playing Mario.
But him playing Garfield somehow broke the entire internet, and it looks like people aren't going to be warming up to it the way they warmed up to Mario.
I personally think it boils down to the fact that Chris Pratt is already an pretty well un-liked name in the movie industry. First and foremost, there's his political controversies. I'm not going to go into too much detail, as I like to avoid talking about politics on my Tumblr, but Pratt has a well-documented history of racist actions. In 2019, he once wore a Gadsden flag on a T-shirt, a flag designed during the American Revolution which has been co-opted by white supremacists. He has also worn a Betsy Ross star baseball hat, which although not widely considered as racist, has been tied to other racist controversies, most notably one with Nike that same year. And let's not forget that Chris' brother, Cully Pratt, may be a member of the far-right supremacist militia Three Percenters, and Chris himself has alleged ties to the Zoe Church, a church in Australia that practices anti-LGBTQ+ conversion therapy.
So, yeah. He's not exactly what I would call a clean individual. On top of all this, he's seen as a rather boring individual by some, and upon reading up on these controversies, it sort of soiled my enjoyment of his other films, such as the aforementioned Mario and the Lego Movie.
Going back to Garfield, the other thing I would like to bring up is the fact that Garfield really only has two genuine voice actors (or three depending if you consider the live-action movies canon)
Without a doubt, the most well-known voice actor for Garfield was and still is Lorenzo Music, who portrayed the cat in numerous animated TV specials and the animated series Garfield and Friends. (1988-1994) He is the voice most people think of when they think of Garfield, but sadly, he passed away in 2001 at the age of 64. He also played other roles such as Peter Venkman in the The Real Ghostbusters, and Super Pac-Man in the Pac-Man animated series.
But it was Garfield that gave him stardom, and to this day, there are some people who say Garfield just doesn't sound the same unless it's done by him. But here's the kicker - He's been dead for 22 years. So, we need to find replacements.
Garfield's most prevalent voice actor for the past few years (while not the only one) has been Frank Welker, a voice actor who has acted in countless cartoons, but is easily best known for his long-running role as Fred Jones in the Scooby-Doo franchise, as well as voicing Megatron in numerous iterations of the Transformers franchise. Welker's role as Garfield has also been the source of controversy; You either love him or hate him, so I'm told.
Long tangent over. Back to the movie. What do I think? I'll give you my thoughts in the form of a checklist.
✅I like the trailer.
✅I don't like Chris Pratt's voice. (Or, just him in general.)
✅I think this film may will still be somewhat decent.
One of the defining (and probably most jarring) bits of the trailer to me is unfortunately, Chris Pratt's voice. As someone who grew up accustomed to hearing either Lorenzo Music or Frank Welker coming out of Garfield, hearing this distinctly human-sounding voice seemed rather odd. It worked with Mario, I think, because Mario himself is a human. Garfield is a well-fed tabby cat with the personality of a grumpy old man. And hearing Chris Pratt's rather upbeat voice coming out of him sounded rather jarring.
But in a way, I kind of liked it... at first. I thought it sounded not too far off from Frank Welker's Garfield voice, just with a slightly higher pitch. So, what made me change my mind?
Hot take incoming!
I think it may have had something to do with me learning about Chris Pratt's racist past and right-wing ties. That might have soiled it for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm still probably going to see the movie. But I feel that if you do go out to see this movie, at least be somewhat aware of who you're giving money to. I know the people who watch Guardians of the Galaxy aren't necessarily bad people because they watch Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. But they need to be somewhat aware of the kind of people getting royalties.
So now, whenever I hear Chris Pratt's voice coming out of one of my cartoon icons, all I can really think is "This guy is a piece of crap in real life." And it's a shame too, because there's one part in the trailer that shows Pratt can deliver a decent, Garfield-y sounding voice.
In the part where Vic (Garfield's father, played by Samuel L. Jackson) asks if Garfield has ever jumped out of a train, Garfield responds with "I've never jumped." And this phrase is delivered in a deep monotone that sounds perfect for Garfield. I figure if the entire trailer had been done in that voice, it would have had a far less negative reaction from fans.
As for the rest of the trailer, it honestly looks good. I particularly like the character designs, and yes, Baby Garfield is just precious. Forget Baby Yoda, this one wins the award for cutest marketable character.
I'd also heard some people complaining about Odie's design. I previously made a post talking about how Odie's design may have been based on his original 1978 version, so I won't bring it up here.
Personally, once you can get past the confusing mess that was Chris Pratt's vocal performance, you get what looks like a decent film. I imagine it will end up a lot like the Mario movie -- Not a real critic pleaser, but I'm sure fans of the franchise will like it okay.
So, to put if brief, I'm somewhat excited. But I'm also in a conflict of interest. I honestly don't mind other people doing the voice of Garfield. I personally believe that people can be so bound to their nostalgia that to hear something that looks familiar but sounds different can come across as somewhat uncanny.
I grew up with Garfield. I had the Garfield and Friends: Behind the Scenes DVD as a child. I loved that DVD, and the free mini Garfield plush that came with it. So growing up, I knew Lorenzo Music as Garfield, despite being born after his death. So hearing Lorenzo's voice is nostalgic to me. But I refuse to let nostalgia get in the way of criticism. Just because something's new doesn't instantly mean it's bad.
With that being said, Chris Pratt as Garfield isn't terrible. He's just not a great Garfield. If the folks at Alcon Entertainment could replace him with a better voice actor, that would be great. But sometimes, it's not that easy. We are so close to May of 2024, and by then, the film will already be out. It would take a good while for them to scrounge a new Garfield voice. The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie had to be delayed a good few months to tweak the character design, and I imagine it would be the same if they were to find a new Garfield.
So in closing: Chris Pratt as Garfield? Big, fat hairy deal.
(Edit 1/1/2024: I reworded part of the ending to reflect my feelings about the voice a bit better.)

NCIS: Sydney Season 1 Episode 1, “Gone Fission,” uses a high-octane mission to successfully establish the NCIS franchise’s first international edition.
With a charismatic cast of characters and a gorgeous backdrop, this series is bound to draw in franchise aficionados and newcomers alike.
NCIS: Sydney knows that it comes up against some iconic NCIS duos.
Still, “Gone Fission” teases something special with Olivia Swann and Todd Lasance’s chemistry. The performers bump against their characters’ archetypes in this heavily expository episode, but the moments that let them breathe are when the future of NCIS: Sydney and their roles on it shine through.
The strongest scenes between Swann’s NCIS Special Agent Captain Michelle Mackey and Lasance’s AFP Liaison Officer Sergeant Jim ‘JD’ Dempsey are when the case slows down, usually from reasons outside of their control.
The potentially dangerous bulletproof vest becomes Chekov’s Gun for NCIS: Sydney and a trust test for Mackey and Dempsey by the end of “Gone Fission.”
While the former builds tension, the latter pulls back Mackey and Dempsey’s facades long enough for different aspects of their characterization to appear. Lasance is excellent at subtly shifting from Dempsey’s lighthearted persona to a more serious side in retaliation to Mackey’s perceived injury.
Meanwhile, Swann showcases Mackey’s sense of humor with the delivery of the line, “That was some shot, cowboy.” Ultimately, the chemistry between Lasance and Swann is undeniable by the final act of “Gone Fission.”
Understandably, “Gone Fission” spends most of its runtime establishing baselines — with Mackey and Dempsey’s being the strongest.
The episode noticeably offers more between Mackey and Special Agent DeShawn Jackson than Dempsey and AFP Liaison Officer Constable Evie Cooper.
DeShawn spends more time with Evie during NCIS: Sydney‘s first episode. Still, their dialogue reveals enough about his history with Mackey to raise questions and leave plenty to be discovered. Not to mention, DeShawn’s comments come full circle with Richard Rankin and when Mackey defends DeShawn with her life.
However, “Gone Fission” doesn’t find a sticking point for Evie’s dynamic with JD, which also predates “Gone Fission.” It’ll be fascinating to see how NCIS: Sydney details their dynamic if it follows the same trend, at least for a while longer, and frequently pairs Mackey & Dempsey and Jackson & Cooper.
Alternatively, “Gone Fission” finds an expectedly delightful dynamic between Doc Roy and Blue. A man who has done this job for 40 years learning from someone younger than him and vice versa opens both characters up to loads of potential. From fun turns to tense clashes, NCIS: Sydney has options with Doc and Blue.
That dynamic — and the team overall — leans heavily on the archetypes the NCIS franchise has come to strengthen over multiple series since 2003.
Similarly, NCIS: Sydney harnesses that familiarity in allies and adversaries like Susan Quinn, the Australian Foreign Minister, and Lewis Fitz-Gerald as Richard Rankin and sets that feel reminiscent of NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans.
So, even when “Gone Fission” leaps into Sydney Harbour with an intense first case that sometimes muddies the waters more than cleans it, NCIS: Sydney anchors itself in the setting and (most of) the characters that outlast it.
After such a big swing (That helicopter pursuit of a boat!), the show has time and space to slow down with smaller-scale cases that showcase more of Australia and the characters throughout it, which includes Mackey and Jackson now.
Fundamentally, “Gone Fission” suggests that the NCIS franchise’s first international venture will only improve as it learns how to balance its tone and all the interesting characters and dynamics that call for more attention.
NCIS: Sydney is only getting started, and its future looks bright.

[ad_1] Gautam Gambhir (PC: X) Atreyo Mukhopadhyay in Mumbai Sitting in the dugout, Gautam Gambhir tried to remain expressionless as India continued losing wickets during their futile chase of 147 in the third Test against New Zealand. The head coach didn’t betray a lot of emotions when the team slipped to defeats in the first two Tests either. His face remained firm and he was never seen barking at his players during those embarrassing moments. Known for his feisty nature during his playing days, Gambhir has to take some tough calls soon enough. Or else, he might just find himself at the other end of some stern decisions. The future looks grim. After suffering a 0-3 clean sweep against New Zealand, India are set for another harsh examination over five Tests in Australia. The Test series after that is next summer in England. Gambhir’s future in this role will depend significantly on what happens in those 10 Tests. To begin with, India under Gambhir have not lived up to the standards the chief coach wants to set. The former opener was clear before the New Zealand series that he prefers a ‘high-risk, high-reward’ philosophy. Risks were taken against New Zealand. Rewards were not forthcoming. The first obvious risk was choosing to bat in overcast conditions in the first Test. Then, it was laying out turning tracks for the second and third games, which backfired spectacularly. It’s difficult to think that captain Rohit Sharma was singularly responsible for all those decisions. He might have had a big say, but the chief coach couldn’t have been a silent spectator. If he was in disagreement, it was his job to make his point. That’s why he is there. He has not been appointed to keep quiet when he notices something is amiss. That never happened. The odd strange decision is understandable. A series of them suggests flaws in the thought process. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Gautam Gambhir with Rohit Sharma (PC: X) The first and foremost shortcoming on Gambhir’s CV is his total lack of experience of coaching in the longer formats. His only credibility — at the time of his appointment — was one season of success for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. His predecessor Rahul Dravid was in charge of the India A and India U-19 programmes for years before being made the chief coach of India. Gambhir’s coaching team is equally inexperienced when it comes to Test cricket. Abhishek Nayar, Rayan ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel have all worked primarily in franchise cricket. The BCCI accepted Gambhir’s wishes by appointing them, even if it meant overlooking coaches groomed through the National Cricket Academy. Gambhir got what he wanted and whom he wanted. That makes him answerable. There are unconfirmed reports the BCCI will have a chat with Gambhir before the Australia series and ask for certain explanations. Even if that doesn’t happen, questions will be asked. He has been given a free hand and even attended the team selection meeting for the Australia tour. There aren’t many precedents of coaches doing that. As far as results go, it’s been a blank so far if one doesn’t read too much into the win against Bangladesh. These are early days still, in Gambhir’s tenure as India coach, but this New Zealand defeat has made things much tougher for him than anybody anticipated. Five Tests in Australia and five more in England are looking ominous at the moment. Given the shape of the team, ageing bodies and the lack of satisfactory returns from some illustrious seniors — no one can say with certainty that India will win in Australia and England. The focus, right now, is on avoiding complete embarrassment. So, it’s needless to say that Gambhir finds himself in an uncomfortable position. This will only get tougher. Each defeat will bring him under the scanner and the situation is such that nobody can say with certainty that this team will start winning immediately. The forecast is more setbacks than anything redeeming. A World Cup winner in two white-ball formats, Gambhir is in for a testing time.
How he motivates the team will hold the key to his future in this enviable job, which is looking unenviable at the moment.
What are the advantages of starting a cleaning franchise?
Did you know that you will find three times more franchisee outlets per capita in Australia than in the US? The reason is that such businesses can generate a huge annual turnover of around $146 billion with current employment of 470,000 people. The concept of franchisee business makes it intriguing for people who are willing to start their own business under a brand that is already popular in the market. Similarly, if you’re interested in a cleaning business, you can simply choose a cleaning franchise in Perth to enjoy the benefits of being a part of the brand.
You can choose the commercial cleaners in Canning Vale, who have great popularity and start a franchisee cleaning business in other parts of Perth. This ensures that you will be working under the same brand but have your own freedom.
