How to Clean Your Brass and Copper Utensils at Home Hi Retails
Brass and copper items are timeless and have been cherished for their aesthetic appeal and cultural significance, especially in Indian households. Whether it's a brass pooja thali, brass god idols, or a copper and brass utensil set, these metals are often found in the kitchen, home décor, and religious items. However, with time, these metals naturally oxidize and may lose their shine. In this blog, we will guide you through the best methods to clean and maintain your brass and copper items at home, ensuring they retain their natural luster and remain as beautiful as the day you brought them home.
Understanding Brass and Copper Oxidation
It is entirely natural for brass and copper to undergo oxidation over time. This is when the surface of the metal reacts with oxygen in the air and forms a layer of tarnish, giving it a dull appearance. This oxidation can be accelerated by factors such as moisture, temperature changes, and exposure to chemicals. While this aging process may add a vintage charm to some items, it’s important to clean your brass and copper items regularly to prevent further tarnishing and maintain their beauty.
Home Techniques to Clean Brass and Copper
Luckily, you don’t need to rely on harsh chemicals or professional cleaning services to restore the shine of your brass products and copper and brass items. Here are some easy and natural home cleaning methods that can effectively clean your brass gift items, decorative brass items, and copper utensils:
Tumblr media
1. Vinegar and Baking Soda Solution
One of the easiest and most effective methods to clean tarnished brass and copper items is using vinegar and baking soda. Here’s how to do it:
Mix equal parts of vinegar and baking soda to form a paste.
Apply the paste to your brass or copper item using a soft cloth or sponge.
Gently rub the paste on the tarnished areas in circular motions.
Rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly with a clean cloth.
This mixture helps break down the tarnish without damaging the metal surface. This method works wonders on brass gift items, including brass water bottles, pooja thali sets, and brass idols.
2. Lemon and Salt Cleaning
Lemon and salt are also great natural cleaning agents for brass and copper items. The acid in the lemon and the abrasiveness of salt combine to remove oxidation effectively. Here’s how:
Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle salt on the exposed surface.
Rub the lemon directly on your brass or copper utensils.
Leave the paste on for a few minutes before scrubbing it gently with a soft brush.
Rinse with water and dry.
This method is particularly effective for brass metal idols, copper and brass products, and brass god idols for decoration.
3. Tomato Ketchup Method
Believe it or not, tomato ketchup can work wonders on brass and copper items. The acid in ketchup helps remove tarnish while maintaining the metal's shine. Simply apply a thin layer of ketchup to your copper and brass products, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a soft cloth. Rinse and dry thoroughly for a sparkling finish.
4. Commercial Brass Cleaner
If you prefer a quick and professional solution, a commercial brass cleaner is a great option. These products are specifically designed to remove tarnish and restore the shine of brass and copper items. They can be easily found online or at your local brass idol shop or gift shop items retailers. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for best results.

This is a cleaned up clock I got from my grandmother who smoked cigarettes. She died three years ago.
The wipe came back yellow and smelt like her cigarettes.
This clock has not been around any tobacco products in 3 years.
Don’t smoke cigarettes

found a drabble in my drafts that was written at some point during empires season one:
“no one ever remembered meeting him, but it was a well known fact that pixl had been around for a long time.
citizens and rulers alike inquired on his age, in which he would always reply with something around thirty-four.
it added up look wise, but his connection to the vigil and the desert as a whole.. or the shrine only he knew about, it seemed like he formed the desert himself.
his love of copper, something used little by the more modern empires, and yet he clung onto it in a way that could only be described as nostalgic.”

So it turns out you can make a homemade solution to clean brass, copper and bronze out of three ingredients.
Salt, vinegar and flour.
There’s a few different ways but it seems to mostly be mix together, put on the copper alloy you’re cleaning, let sit, rinse and dry.
Do with that information what you please (but I recommend double checking the measurements online).

Restore Shine: How to Clean a Copper Pipe for a Sparkling Finish
Copper pipes, prized for their durability and aesthetic appeal, can lose their luster over time due to tarnish and grime buildup. Whether for plumbing, decorative purposes, or crafting, maintaining their pristine condition is vital. To master how to clean a copper pipe, start by gathering simple household items: white vinegar, table salt, flour, and a soft cloth.
Create a cleaning paste by mixing equal parts of vinegar and flour with a pinch of salt until it forms a thick consistency. Apply this paste generously to the copper pipe, ensuring every inch is coated. Allow the paste to sit for about 20 minutes, which will break down the tarnish and grime.
Next, rinse the pipe under warm water, gently scrubbing with a soft-bristled brush to remove the paste and reveal the restored shine. For stubborn stains, repeat the process or immerse the pipe in a vinegar solution for a deeper clean.
After rinsing, dry the pipe thoroughly with a clean cloth to prevent water spots. For a finishing touch, buff the surface with a dry, soft cloth to bring out its natural gleam. Proper maintenance not only preserves the copper’s visual appeal but also extends its lifespan. By following these steps on how to clean a copper pipe, you’ll achieve a professional-grade finish with minimal effort.

Pour water in the copper vessel and leave it overnight. When water is kept for over 8 hours in the copper vessel, it acquires anti-bacterial properties. Drink it empty stomach in the morning for best results.
Wipe the outside surface with soft cloth
Mix lemon and salt in warm water in a container
Put in the mug and leave for 15 minutes
Shake and rinse with clean water
Pure Copper may get oxidised and become discoloured when exposed to air. This is perfectly normal. To remove, please wash properly and regularly.
