Since I could remember I’ve always known Nancy. From the first time we could walk or do test we’ve been in the same class but never got the chance to talk to one another. And for that I’m grateful I’ve always found her so uptight and so much of a priss! I mean how could anyone like her? I mean I understand her dark curls that distracted bees in the light from the illusion of honey. Or her huge blue eyes that bore into you like some doll. Or I guess it’s her slim body easy to grab and take hold of. Any boy or man for that matter would love that…a small girl they could hold and take control of. And Nancy…well Nancy the thing is.
SLAM
I flinched outta fear of the sudden loud noice and rush of cool air. “Wake up L/n!” Steve was the one to shut my locker I rolled my eyes. His huge puff of curly hair and dark spots on his face. You know I understand why the girls jump their pillows at night at the thought of him. But for me… “oh come on you gotta come!” He’s an annoying fuck. I rolled my eyes “I got work to do Harrington. And you do too.” He huffs crossing his arms. “Baby y/n please. You never go anywhere fun with us!” I scratched my eyebrow and scoffed in annoyance. “Plus we all need it after the upside down.” He leans in to whisper. To this is stopped dead in my tracks my eyes widened as a shiver ran through my core. The thought of being picked up and strangled near to death was trauma inducing or knowing Steve and Robin where there too getting hurt and that Eddie….oh god no Eddie. I took in a breath turning to face the five eleven boy and puffed my chest out “fine! Just don’t bother me during this party.” He smiles pumping his fist into the air “yes yes yes!” “But!” He raises a brow placing his fist down. “For a week you have to clean up the back shelf’s in family video.” He smiles “oh come on it’s not like you’re gonna last during the party. Let’s make a deal. If you make it to….hm 2:00 clock I’ll do it. But if you don’t I can drag you wherever I want.”
I shrugged “deal.” I held out my hand as he spits on his and hold it out. My face contorts in disbelief and disgust “Ew Steve!”

Four hours later and here I stood in front of clay Thomsons house. The white build of the place was beautiful that’s for sure. And the red outlining was different from the rest on the block. Three cars parked out front sitting on the side of the road while others had bikes racked up wherever they could place it and two cars in the drive way with a bike. For me I’d token my skateboard and with a huge breath and reinsurance I walked up to the door. And stepped in. Immediately the smell of smoke, sweat, pizza, alcohol and weed filled my nose I placed a hand over my face almost gaging at the sudden rush of horrible smells. I turned my head towards the out side letting out a sigh before taking another breath and rushing through the grinding and horny bodies of people who held each other with the smooth music held to a minimum to keep the police away.
I gripped my board as people rushed into each other talking making out. It was all too much and not my environment. But all I had to do was find Steve and Robin. Stay with them for the night and make it to 2:00 o’clock then I’ll be free from this poison. This room was dim. And I couldn’t see I was literally starting to panic not being able to find Steve or maybe Robin hell if Johnathan was here I’d ask for his help.
But I was stranded at the middle of sweaty bodies that didn’t give a fuck about me. Ones that didn’t mind pushing to their goals to have sex with each other. The room felt like it was spinning as I did looking for Steve. I frowned as my breathing seemed to thicken with the heat of the room. My throat burning as my eyes teared up. My chest tightened. I felt like the walls were closing in and i couldn’t shake myself outta my body trembling under the gaze of random people who raised a brow and laughed. I stumbled backwards holding my skateboard close to my chest before crashing into someone.
“I’m sorry I’m so so sorry.” I started out babbling the tears and heat from my face finally set loose as I cried out. “Hey! Hey it’s okay can you breathe for me?” A voice called back to me over the humming music and sound of rumbling people. “You’re okay.” She said again this time grabbing a hold of me placing a finger underneath my chin forcing me up to look at beautiful blue eyes that never seemed to end with deep details of hints of gray and maybe a flash of green. “Hi.” She said softly. “H-hi.” I stutter back. “Have you ever been to a party?” Her eyebrows creased in curiosity yet worry. I just shook my head slowly as she stood us up. She softly smiles and says “that figures. Why don’t we go to a quiet place hm?” I nodded as she claps her hands holding onto mine. “Come with me. I’ll keep you safe I promise.”
She pulls me along with her. All I could look at was the back of her golden hair that lit up with every pink light and light blue shine that hit it. We pushed up the stairs. The music becoming more muffled and less people were up here. Eventually we went into some room and closed the door behind us locking it and turning the lights on. I blocked at the sudden blinding “so what’s your name?” She turns to me with a kind smile. “Y/n…” something sparks in her eyes like a realization. “So you’re the famous y/n that’s Robin and Steve talk about huh?”
She says sitting on the bed. I sit beside her nodding. “Apparently so. And your Mrs wheeler that that Steve so loves to talk about.” She smiles and laughs a bit. “That’d be me. But please call me Nancy.”
We smile at each other enjoying the company. “So why did you come? I mean I’ve never seen you at any other party before.” I shrugged looking forward at the empty tv screen. “Steve and I made a bet. If I stay till two o’clock he has to clean for me. And if he wins well I have to party more.” She hums nodding. “Sounds like king Steve alright.” She lets out a sigh laying back on the bed letting her head smother and some else’s sheets. I tilted my head falling back too my head beside hers.
“Let’s play a game.” She sat in a dull manner “how about 21 questions hm?” She fixes her head to look at me. Blue eyes hitting my average brown ones. “Okay..”
And for hours we sat there talking learning about each other laughing and pushing each other….maybe she wasn’t so much of a priss nor a stuck up asshole who needs to learn their place…but a human. A human girl with very high standards but…reasonable. She’d told me about her break up with Steve. And Johnathan we shared a lot of things even exchanged numbers and houses.
Later on I found myself sound asleep. But Nancy stayed up her blue eyes darting over my face. Soft slim fingers tracing and pushing hair behind my ears. She smiled leaning in and batting her long eyelashes “goodnight. Y/n.” Kissing my forehead and laying back herself closing her eyes and dozing off.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Me being the first to wake up I notice our intwined bodies. Her warm hand on my him while the other underneath her head. Legs tangled like a puzzled waiting to fit and the smell…oh the smell of fruit punch and mainly peaches that’s stood out. I took in a breath letting my body collapse to hers. Before slithering away to work.
“Looks like you had a fun night.” Steve laughed out to me while Robin butted his stomach. “What he means is where were you last night.” She takes over. I rolled my eyes tiredly. “At the party….i couldn’t find you two so I went upstairs and slept…woke up at 3:00 in the morning. That’s it.” They looked to each other again. When I get behind the counter. Lazily I stare off into space my mind trembling back to last night and this morning…I shivered at the thought of her warmth. The taste of her cherry blossom colored lips and the smell of her. I took in a deep breath sighing.
Hours later I sat reading a book at the counter. “Yo, y/n me and Robin are heading out to get some ice cream?” I shook my head “nah, I was late I should take this. But have a goodnight.”
So I sat alone in the store for about 30 minutes or so. Before it started raining hella hard and a car pulled up a blue one to be exact and a woman stood out of it with a huge gray sweater and white thin pants. She ran to the store the wind moving her curls bouncing it in a way that makes it like some love movie. The door bell rings as the girl enters with a drenched body. Her blue eyes lock up to mine with a small smile. “Nancy?” She tilts her head nodding holding something to her chest “hi y/n. You left your board in the room and Steve told me you’d worked here so I brought it.” My eyes widened looking at the huge bag in her hand. “Oh yea. I left it in a rush this morning.” I said thoughtfully “well I wish you’d woke me. I could’ve drove you.” I raised a brow looking into her dull blue eyes. Something told me I should apologize something told me I should… “yea sorry about that.” I scratched my ear looking into the far corner of the room. I could hear her wet shoes clacking on the floor. Her presence way closer than before “so uhm…what are you reading?” “Oh uhm.” I blushed hiding the book away. She lets out a sigh setting my board down.
“Well, since there’s no one here” she looked around the store. “Can you take this as a lunch break and talk to me?” She places her hands on the counter leaning in. “Please?” Finally I looked up to her beautiful blue eyes and let out a sigh. “Okay. Let me just put up a sign.” I leaned down shuffling and finding the ‘sorry out for lunch’ sign and placing it up. “You can come to the back and we can talk.” She nods picking up my board walking around the floating island and walking towards the back room behind me.
My keys clicked and clacked as i unlocked opened and pushed the door ajar. The dark room loomed until i flickered the light on and pushed the door open fully reviling a long table in the middle, chairs, microwave, counter, refrigerator basically a mini kitchen. “So? You hungry or anything.” We walked into the room. She hums “why do you have anything for me to consume?” She questions. Looking around the room. “Hm. If you want I have a huge sandwich my mother made for me.” I took it out the fridge handing the long Italian bread to her. She raises a brow and smiles. “Your Italian y/n?”
My eyebrows creased as I shook my head “what no?” She laughs placing and hand I between my chest. “Chill I was joking.” My eyes widened my heart pounding the smell of peaches and mangos god she leans in and kisses my cheek and my body heats up. Taking the bread from my hands and turning to sit at the table. I blinked twice before sitting across from her.
And for a bit we sat there eating in silence but once we finished I looked up to the clock. “Looks like my shifts over.” I mumbled. I crossed my arms listening to the rain. “Hey..about when I left. Are you still up to giving me a ride.” Her eyes shimmered with happiness as she nods. “Ready when you are.”
I sat in the front got her car watching the rain race down the window. Secretly hoping the one on the left would win. “Y/n.” I turn to Nancy with a “hm?” And she smiled at me for a second as we pulled up into some forest like area. “Where are we?” I looked around slightly panicked “it’s okay I just wanted to ask something.” I again look to her the girl next to me who seemed now shy and nervous “do you remember Mrs p class?” She asked my eyes widened. “Our second grade teacher?” She nodded I was shocked she remembered her or that I was even there with her.
“Do you remember her little rants on soul mates?”
I slowly nodded as we smiled. Suddenly the girl I’d known my whole life placed a hand on the dashboard and on the middle box of the car her knee dug into the seat as she leaned into me. When did she unbuckle herself? I’d asked myself I could smell the mint from her breath that’s how close she was. “Do you remember how she spoke about that feeling? When you found them they’d always be on your mind? Make your heart race with enjoyment and most of all. You’d always be with them unconsciously?” My heart beat quickened as i slowly nodded her hands rubbing my knees and she undid my seatbelt. “Do you believe it?” She asked in a husk tone gosh her voice was so low and sensational so…hypnotic.
“Yes.” I breathed out I knew at this point my face was red redder than the blood or any fruit that passed for a vegetable.
“Y/n.” She said. “Yes?” She licks her lips as our nose touched. “Can I….kiss you?” I let out another shaky breath nodding and saying “please.” Suddenly she attacked me with her lips on mine. Biting and nibbling on my bottom one leaving it swollen from the harsh behavior. I let out another breath but of pleasure as she climbed into my lap. Kissing down my neck her tongue assaulting me in such a delicate way. I moaned out gripping her waist as she sat on me taking a her sweater off. I gasped at the sight of beauty. The pale skin and silk white bra. My mouth was practically watering. “Can we?” She whispered out breathlessly. I nodded. “Please.” She nods her hands traveling up my shirt as she rubbed her body against mine. “Please…please.” I hushed out as she suck and bit my neck hopefully leaving light marks behind. BUMP
We jumped at the sudden noise our attention to the left of us. We smiled laughing at the confused doe that wondered near. I rubbed Nancy’s back kissing her should when it left. “Oh my god we were just robbed.” She laughed out. I smiled leaning down to kiss her stomach. “Well maybe we could do this at my place?” Her eyes sparkled. “Lead the way y/n.”

Poem of the Day 1 December 2023
James Thomson. 1700-1748
On the Death of a particular Friend
AS those we love decay, we die in part, String after string is sever'd from the heart; Till loosen'd life, at last but breathing clay, Without one pang is glad to fall away.
Unhappy he who latest feels the blow! Whose eyes have wept o'er every friend laid low, Dragg'd ling'ring on from partial death to death, Till, dying, all he can resign is—breath.

Benson Henderson vs Frankie Edgar 1
It is wild to me how many new fans don’t know who Benson Henderson (30-11) is. The former UFC and WEC lightweight champion has now fought in the Bellator cage for more years than he did in the UFC and WEC combined, so I guess that isn’t too surprising.
For those that haven’t followed Bendo’s career, the man has one of the better strength of schedules you are going to see out of any lightweight ever. He fought Donald Cerrone (3x), Anthony Pettis (2x), Franke Edgar (2x), RDA, Josh Thomson, Gilbert Melendez, Nate Diaz, Jorge Masvidal, Clay Guida, and Jim Miller before he left the UFC and has added names like Michael Chandler (2x), Andrey Koreshkov, and Patricio Pitbull to the ledger since joining Bellator. Crazy to think how a match up between Bendo and Khabib Nurmagomedov was really talked up way back in like 2014-2015. Sadly, we never got it but we are getting a consolation prize many years later.
Smooth Benson Henderson has been a champion everywhere he has been except for Bellator MMA. With his previous attempts at gold falling flat, he will try possibly one last time this Friday (March 10) in the opener for the Bellator LW Grand Prix. His opponent will be champion Usman Nurmagomedov (15-0) and the fight will serve as the main event of Bellator 292.

People use art to help their well-being but also to draw attention to societal changes and issues. The combination of art and nature allows people to explore the natural world, create more profound meaning for themselves, and connect people through understanding and viewing their artwork. This article will discuss the importance of integrating art and nature and how various artists used nature to inspire them.
Throughout time, artists have used nature as a muse or motivation for creating different forms of art. Nature can provide endless forms of inspiration, and it can be a critical theme in many forms of artwork. Henry Matisse said, “An artist must possess nature. He must identify himself with her rhythm, by efforts that will prepare the mastery which will later enable him to express himself in his own language.” Artists use nature to express themselves but also to understand their work and themselves on a deeper level. To do this, artists may even use nature within their creations, such as wood, clay, water, and graphite, which are all-natural mediums.
There has also been some research done on the importance of art and nature to the well-being of others. Thomson et al. (2020) found that creative green prescription programs, which combine arts- and nature-based activities, can significantly impact the psychosocial well-being of adult mental health service clients. They recommended that museums with parks and gardens blend programs to incorporate nature, art, and well-being. Kang et al. (2021) found that nature-cased group art therapy positively affects siblings of children with disabilities. This type of art therapy increased their resistance to disease and their self-esteem while alleviating stress.
The Jan Van Eyck Academy in the Netherlands has opened a lab for artists to do their own nature research. They created a facility to support woodworking, printmaking, photography, video, and metalwork while allowing artists to explore their work and relationship with nature. This lab gives the artists a chance to consider nature in various ways, including its relation to ecological and landscape development issues to begin to bridge a gap between humankind, nature, and art. There needs to be more scientific research on the importance of nature and art; however, we see that artists are already beginning to research how nature affects their work and overall mindset.
How have artists used nature in their work?
Renowned artist Vincent van Gogh, was able to bring aspects of nature to life in his paintings. His work has allowed people to understand nature in different forms and bring people together. A recent exhibit of his work brought people together for a visual and thrilling experience.
Photos taken at the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Chicago from Sam Iwinski 2021
Nature also inspires modern artists, such as Mary Iverson, who draws inspiration from the natural beauty around her. Her paintings offer a contemporary spin on traditional landscape art, and she uses monuments, national parks, and societal issues (like climate change) as inspiration. She began addressing climate change in her art because she wanted to combine her environmental activism and painting interests.
Another modern artist, Miranda Lloyd, creates contemporary abstract nature art, such as trees, birds, and other naturalistic nature scenes. She uses inspiration from her own backyard and paints many scenes that are inspired by the sea. Miranda is an excellent example of how you can be inspired by nature within and outside of your home.
Additionally, items from nature can be used to create new forms of art. Renowned artist Daniel Poppercreates larger-than-life sculptures, and many of them are designed with forms of nature. He currently has an outdoor exhibit at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL, called “Human+Nature.” This exhibit connects people and trees through sculptures and other forms of art. As stated on the Morton Arboretum’s website, “People rely on trees for clean air to breathe, shade to cool, and beauty that can bring joy and relaxation, among many other benefits. In turn, trees need people to care for them to thrive and share their benefits, especially in a changing climate.” Individuals can begin to reimagine their relationships with trees as they explore these large-scale artworks. Below are a few pictures from his exhibit!

This unit was very nostalgic, as reading about the group of seven brought back some memories from middle school. In art class, we had used the Group of Seven as inspiration to create mini paintings using clay and layering it over each other. Although I do not have my original painting, I recreated the one from Tom Thomson below, called “The Pool.”
Nature is quite often used as inspiration for art, and it creates an emphasis on the different types of beauty present in nature. Art is sometimes able to capture details the human eye may not catch. Oftentimes, it creates the sense of self-fulfillment with reference to Maslow’s concept of self-actualization (Beck at al. 2018). When interpreting nature with art, we create a connection between the two and most of the time it is beauty. Immanuel Kant, a famous philosopher, said that beauty is the one way nature can appear meaningful for humans, and that beautiful nature allows humans to make a purposeful connection (Flodin, 2021). We tend not to look at the uglier side of nature when creating art, but rather look at more appealing things such as blue water, colourful leaves, sunsets, and more.
I also tend to view the more “beautiful” side of nature per se, and I capture the beauty of nature using pictures. As humans, we tend to ignore things like muddy waters, dead trees, ugly insects and more. However, all of these elements make up the nature that we should attempt a connection with.
The gift of beauty is made up of several elements in my opinion, and is not subjective in any way. Both the “ugly” and the “pretty” elements make up the beauty of nature, for example we may see an appealing lake in front of us, but under the lake there may be elements that are not visible which could change the visual appeal. A natural scene that may seem beautiful to one may not look the same to someone else.
Additionally, the gift of beauty can be further seen or understood by introducing the element of risk. For example, climbing the mountain to see a better view of what is below. Using what is in your “back pocket” as a nature interpreter and adding to your pocket may help to enhance your experience in nature, and reduce the amount of potential lemons (Hooykaas, 2023). In my back pocket, I do not have the fear of heights and have experience rock climbing and tree climbing, which can lessen the amount of potential lemons I may have when exploring as a nature interpreter.
Is there anything in your back pocket that decreases the amount of potential lemons you may encounter as a nature interpreter?
