“All these, however, were mere terrors of the night, phantoms of the mind that walk in darkness;” The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Washington Irving 23rd June 1819, first publication of “The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." by American author, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat Washington Irving. The collected stories written under the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon, contained the first appearance of his now famous stories, `”Rip Van Winkle", and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". The work was among the first widely read works of American literature, both in the United States, Britain. The stories were written during Irvine’s residency in England and around Europe from 1815 to 1832. While in England, Irvine met Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. They both shared the friendship of the American actor John Howard Payne, who offered his hand in marriage to Mary in 1826, but she refused. Payne then tried to persuade Irvine to propose to her, although there is no evidence whether this proposal took place. Mary never married after the drowning of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley despite numerous proposals, and so it is likely that Irvine’s proposal would have also been rejected. The story of the ‘Legend of Sleepy Hollow’, originated in 1798, during an outbreak of yellow fever in Manhattan, where his family sent him to Tarrytown, New York. It was in Tarrytown he became familiar with the nearby town of Sleepy Hollow, with its Dutch customs and local ghost stories. Art shown is original and inspired by the story, it can be found on the website: www.ofgraveconern.com You are invited to follow @ofgrave.concern for more gothic tales #gothicliterature #gothicfiction #classicliterature #halloween #halloweenfiction #washingtonirving #thelegendofsleepyhollow #sleepyhollow #ichabodcrane #headlesshorseman #maryshelley #maryshelleysfrankenstein #ripvanwinkle #classiclit #classiclitmemes #gothictales #literaturelover #classicbooks #classicbookstagram #tarrytown #yellowfever #regencygothic #gothicstories #percyshelley #percybyssheshelley #sleepyhollowcemetery #sleepyhollowart #gothiccandles #darkart #darkartists https://www.instagram.com/p/CQjMGJxHvbk/?utm_medium=tumblr

25th May 1816, publication of ‘Christabel', ‘Kubla Khan: A Vision’ and ‘The Pains of Sleep’, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge published by John Murray in London.‘Christabel' begun in 1797, tells of the magical and pagan encounter in the woods of the strange figure of Geraldine, who Christabel meets when she goes to pray amongst the large oak trees. ‘Kubla Khan’, also written in 1797 describes Coleridge’s opium fueled dream in which he visited Xanadu, the palace of the Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan. The Poems were finally published on Lord Byron’s advice when the two poets met. On the same day Coleridge mentions in a letter meeting Byron, stating that Byron’s face was ‘so beautiful, a countenance I scarcely ever saw’ and ‘his eyes the open portals of the sun – things of light, and for light’. Alongside his fellow poet and friend William Wordsworth, Coleridge began the romantic movement in England, founding the Lake Poets. In 1798 they jointly published ‘ Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems’, The publication gave birth to the Romantic movement in English literature. Lyrical Ballads and the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, are featured in the Industrial Sublime Tarot, a Tarot Deck with original art featuring the historical characters of the years 1760 to 1848. Prints of the cards are for sale at www.ofgraveconcern.com/industrialsublimetarot1760-1848 Also shown are hanging books which are made from actual antique salvaged books which are lovingly repaired and then the pages are fixed in place, featuring the reproduction of a title page of a classic gothic work from the 18th and 19th century alongside original artwork.
