I just started watching the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix and had NO IDEAAA what to but lord, that start was a car crash (that was bad but I couldn't help myself).
*For context: (credit to r/goblin0100): Carlos Reutemann hit and killed a mechanic who fell from the pit wall during practice and there were protests over mechanic safety from the mechanics of all teams before the start of the race due to this. Many drivers also joined the protest which was occurring even as the warm up lap started so their cars were vacant sitting on the grid. Once the drivers did go to the cars, Piquet accidentally went to the wrong grid position and so only Piquet went around again and regained his original position. By the time Piquet had got back around, everyone was overheating and the Arrows of Patrese lost the engine. He frantically waved to show the engine was gone but the starter gave the green flag anyway. An Arrows mechanic had already jumped over the pit wall to restart Patrese's Arrows and from a little further back on the grid, the other Arrows of Siegfried Stohr was blindsided and went straight into the back of Patrese, crushing the mechanic's' legs. Stohr jumped (and fell) from the car and then practically collapsed in grief over the situation as the mechanic had a seizure on the race track. The race wasn't even red flagged, with an ambulance car on the track and loads of mechanics along with the two smashed Arrows cars the drivers went straight past, although most of them dramatically slowed once they realized. By the next lap, the drivers had had enough and called their own red flag and stopped the race of their own accord, but no red flag was given to stop the race by the organizer.
Thank goodness the Arrows mechanic recovered fully from his injuries but the severe lack of safety precautions that existed in F1 back in the day is lowkey horrifying. I've no illusion that F1 today is 100% safe bc no motorsport could EVERRR be considered safe, I'd like to think though, that mechanics, engineers, marshals etc are at way less risk now than they were back then.

I'm on the 1982 San Marino GP and having read a well-written article dissecting the whole debacle that was the Driver's World Championship of 1982, I am:
1. Not prepared for the tragedy that is to come (Gilles Villeneuve has been my favourite through this classic F1 watch and I'm not prepared for his premature death 💔)
2. Intrigued and excited to witness that chaos that was the final lap of the 1982 Monaco GP 🤭
3. Keen to see the whole Piquet v Salazar incident and confrontation that took place at the German GP
I'm definitely going to do a little post about all the fun stuff I've learnt from this classic F1 watch of mine and also kinda share some rambled thoughts I've had throughout. I'm honestly glad I decided to get F1TV bc I'm only through 1970-1982 and it's already been such a fun, eye-opening experience looking back on how F1 used to be.

Tomorrow all will be full of Senna’s face and we will remember his history and the legend he was. But we always forget to talk about Roland Ratzenberger, we have to remind that it is his 30 anniversary too.
He was not able to perform that historical races and it is obvious that he is not going to be so well remembered as other drivers are. But I think it is our duty to just dedicate some words for him.
At this point we have a really good documentaries from Roland and I would recommend to every classic F1 fan dedicating some time for watching them. We have to remember the man he was and how devoted he was to motoracing since his childhood. He was not lucky, and at the moment he arrived to the Formula 1 he left us.
At least, we are able to remember Roland by histories and memories that we have found through all these years. And although we have not been able to see his performance in F1, I am sure that everyone reminds him as the man with that charming smile that we lost in that awful weekend for motorsport.❤️

not to senna/schumacher post on main but do you ever think about this picture
Tumblr media
[ nicola larini and schumacher being told that senna was in critical condition ]
or this clip of michael being asked if equalling senna meant much to him
do you ever think about the fact that michael was in denial when confronted with senna's death and only admitted to accepting it two weeks after the fact. do you ever think he would have felt guilt realising he watched senna sustain his injuries a few corners ahead during a seemingly "innocuous crash" whilst chasing him. do you ever think, retrospectively, that he felt like he shouldn't have won at imola. do you ever think about the fact that even in death senna continued to dominate headlines, eclipsing schumacher's win. do you ever think about the fact that schumacher and senna would occasionally meet after races to discuss where they had gone wrong/where they had lost speed. do you ever think about schumacher realising that would never happen again. do you ever think about the love that was there.
because i do.
