Rightly regarded as one of the all-time great classic sports cars, the muscular, fire-breathing Cobra succeeded in capturing the hearts of enthusiasts like few of its contemporaries. Only 1,000-or-so Cobras of all types were built between 1962 and 1967, but such was the model's enduring popularity that production was resumed in 1982 under the auspices of Brooklands-based Autokraft. 

Convinced that a market existed for an inexpensive sports car combining European chassis engineering and American V8 power, Le Mans-winning Texan racing driver Carroll Shelby concocted an unlikely alliance between AC Cars and the Ford Motor Company. The former's Ace provided the simple twin-tube chassis frame - designed by John Tojeiro - into which was persuaded one of Ford's lightweight, small-block V8s. It was discovered that the latter was lighter than the six-cylinder Ford Zephyr unit that AC was using, yet with vastly greater potential. To cope with the projected power increase, the Ace chassis was strengthened with heavier gauge tubing and supplied fitted with four-wheel disc brakes. Weighing a mere 1.5cwt more than a Bristol-engined Ace yet endowed with double the power and torque, the Cobra turned in a breathtaking performance, racing to 60mph in 4.4 seconds and reaching the 'ton' in under 12, exceptional figures by early 1960s standards and none too shabby even today.

The 260ci (4.2-litre) prototype first ran in January 1962, with production commencing later that year. Exclusively for the USA initially, Cobras - minus engines - were sent from England to be finished off by Shelby in California, and it was not until late in 1963 that AC Cars in Thames Ditton got around to building the first fully finished cars to European specification. 

After 75 Cobras had been built with the 260ci engine, the more powerful 289ci (4.7-litre) unit was standardised in 1963. Rack-and-pinion steering was the major MkII up-date; then in 1965 a new, stronger, coil-suspended MkIII chassis was introduced to accommodate Ford's 427ci (7.0-litre) V8, an engine that in race trim was capable of producing well in excess of 400bhp. Wider bodywork, extended wheelarch flares and a bigger radiator intake combined to create the definitive - and much copied - Cobra MkIII look. Keeping ahead of the competition on the racetrack had been the spur behind Shelby's adoption of the 427 engine, but some MkIIIs to 'street' specification came with Ford's less powerful 428ci hydraulic-lifter V8. 

But for Brian Angliss, the Cobra story would have ended in 1967. The Autokraft boss had built up a business restoring Cobras and supplying parts, and in the early 1980s acquired the rights to the AC name plus a quantity of jigs and tooling from the old Thames Ditton factory. Keeping the overall style of the MkIII, Autokraft produced the MkIV, which was appropriately updated to meet current legislation and powered by a 'Federalised' Ford 5.0-litre V8 engine. Around 480 were built. 

Chassis number 'CSX2116' was invoiced to Shelby American on 16th April 1963 and shipped to Los Angeles three days later aboard the 'SS Loch Gowan'. Invoiced on 18th June 1963 to Burton Motors of Sacramento, California, the Cobra was sold new to a local doctor who used it for a few years before giving it to his daughter. She used the car as daily transport for several years before the clutch failed, at which time it was sold to Steve Dangremond of Santa Rosa, California. The Cobra was advertised for sale by Mr Dangremond in late 1977 and bought by Dr Grant Hill of Chotoka, Alberta. Dr Hill fitted Weber carburettors and raced 'CSX2116', eventually trading it to Fred Yule in Portland, Oregon. At that time, the car was still finished in its original colour scheme of dark blue and retained its original black leather interior. 

'CSX2116' returned to the UK in the late 1980s and was advertised through Hampson's Ltd, by which time it had been refinished in red and fitted with a full-width roll bar. Subsequent owners in England were Dr Carlos Barbot, Trojan boss Peter Agg and Formula 1 racing driver Rupert Keegan. 'CSX2116' was last restored in 1988, records on file indicating that an extensive mechanical restoration was undertaken at this time. The car still retains its original black leather interior though the Weber carburettors have gone, replaced by an easier to maintain four-barrel Holley. There is considerable additional accompanying documentation including correspondence between previous owners, a copy of the original bill of sale, Shelby American Automobile Club letter of authentication, FIA papers and Swansea V5 registration document. The car has belonged to the current owner since 2006.  Early Cobras are offered for sale only rarely and this example represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a fine example of this classic of Anglo-American sports car design.

The Portland Art Museum is pleased to announce The Shape of Speed: Streamlined Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1930–1942, a special exhibition debuting at the Museum in Summer 2018. Featuring 19 rare streamlined automobiles and motorcycles, 

The Shape of Speed opens June 16 and will be on view through September 16, 2018.

The concept of streamlining has fascinated people for generations. Beginning in the 1930s and extending until the outbreak of the World War II, automotive designers embraced the challenge of styling and building truly streamlined cars that were fast and fuel-efficient. They were encouraged by the confluence of aircraft design with the sleek shapes of fast railroad locomotives; new advanced highways such as the Autobahns; and events like the 1939 New York City World’s Fair, which showcased futuristic design.

The Shape of Speed presents a select group of rare automobiles and motorcycles that demonstrate how auto designers translated the concept of aerodynamic efficiency into exciting machines that in many cases, looked as though they were moving while at rest.

The Museum will display 17 cars and two motorcycles—the best of that era’s streamlined offerings—from Europe and the United States. Engineering drawings and period photographs will show some of the aircraft, railroad, ship and yacht designs that influenced the automakers.

Featured designers and engineers include European streamlining pioneer Paul Jaray, along with Richard Buckminster Fuller, Norman Bel Geddes, Raymond Loewy, Harley J. Earl, Hermann Ahrens, Georges Paulin, Joseph Figoni, Dr. Wunibald Kamm, Otto Kuhler, Jean Bugatti, Hans Ledwinka, Gordon Buehrig, and others.

In contrast with the decades following World War II

—when advanced aircraft and rocket designs propelled carmakers toward fanciful and impractical designs—

the automobile designs in the pre-war period were more organic, emulating the classic teardrop shape thought, at that time, to be perfect for cheating the wind.

The results were brought to life in cars with then-startling shapes that looked as though they were ready to be embraced and caressed.

Even if they weren’t noticeably faster than their predecessors, they looked fast.

In a few cases, the conservative public balked. Sales of well-known brands slipped, then recovered as consumers tentatively embraced and then accepted this brave new look.

The design influence of streamlining was felt far beyond automobile styling in this period. The school of architecture now known as Streamline Moderne had an effect on the shape of radios, appliances, transport trucks, and railroad locomotives, along with such disparate items as table flatware, water pitchers, toasters, pencil sharpeners, and cocktail shakers.

A few of the automotive marques featured in The Shape of Speed include Mercedes-Benz, who have restored one of the carmaker’s Stromlinienwagens (streamlined cars) from 1938, along with Bugatti, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Voisin, Talbot-Lago, Delahaye, Cord and Chrysler.

In addition, The Shape of Speed includes two motorcycles: a radically streamlined Henderson KJ and a BMW concept R7 motorcycle that was developed in the mid-1930s, lost for decades in a missing crate, recovered in 2005, and completely restored.

The latest exhibition in the Portland Art Museum’s design series, The Shape of Speed is guest curated by Ken Gross, former director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Gross previously curated the Museum’s 2011 exhibition The Allure of the Automobile, which enthralled visitors with its lavish presentation of automobiles as kinetic art—a form of rolling sculpture. With this new exhibition, the Museum opens the door to another fascinating exploration of automotive design.

“The Shape of Speed celebrates great design that moves us,” said Brian Ferriso, The Marilyn H. and Dr. Robert B. We're drawn into Xi's story as he goes from living peacefully with his tribe to being thrust into a completely different reality when they start hunting down any remaining cases of coca-cola at stores all over town! It also touches on some deeper themes such as the cultural modern world where his customs and rituals mean nothing. Xi's journey is our own as we watch the culture clash of modern society, with all its good intentions and never-ending thirst for new things to consume, come into contact with a simpler time that has long since passed by. The humorous film release was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film but lost out to Italy’s Cinema Paradiso (1988). 11) Caddyshack Released in 1980 this classic comedy film by Harold Ramis is widely considered one of the funniest movies ever made by fans and critics alike. The Salkinds decided in 1977 that they would simultaneously film Superman and its sequel. Principal photography began in March 1977 and ended in October 1978. There were tensions between Richard Donner, the original director, and the producers. It was decided to stop filming the sequel (of which 75 percent was already completed) and instead finish the first film. BMW M is sending the successful BMW M4 GT4 motorsport model into its fourth racing season with four exclusive new designs and is offering the four spectacular winning designs from an internal design competition in a limited edition to interested customer teams, BMW M fans and car enthusiasts. Since 2018, the BMW M4 GT4 has been taking part successfully in numerous racing series around the world. In addition to the car’s performance, BMW customer teams also appreciate its rational features in areas important to this segment such as mileage, cost efficiency and ease of maintenance. The BMW M4 GT4 can be used in sprint formats as well as with an endurance package in long-distance races. "Powersticks" make it easy to adjust the power levels to those that are relevant in terms of Balance of Performance. 30 designers took part in the worldwide creative competition organized by the BMW Group and the BMW Group company Designworks. The four-member jury consisting of Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design, Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design, Markus Flasch, CEO BMW M GmbH, and Jens Marquardt, the BMW Group Motorsport Director at the time, selected four spectacular designs. "The quality of all the designs we received was impressive and shows just how creative and passionate our designers are about motorsport. All four selected designs emphasize the highly dynamic character of the BMW M4 GT4. The jury was particularly impressed by the perfect interplay of the topics of BMW Motorsport history, classic BMW M icons and how the number four was interpreted.

The designs of Julia Quentin of BMW Motorrad from Munich (GER), Simon Haynes of Rolls-Royce Design from Goodwood (GBR), Wesselka Mandowa-Maier of Designworks from Los Angeles (USA) and Li Tianyuan of BMW i Design from Munich (GER) were awarded by the jury. The designs were applied to the BMW M4 GT4 using high quality foil. In my designs I always consider how graphics and patterns can emphasize the sculptural geometry of an object. Adding details and colors can completely change and emotionalize a design. I love to create disruptive designs that convey a strong visual message. That's why I designed a geometric pattern for the BMW M4 GT4 with cleanly cut squares and large typography. The eye must first understand the pattern before it sees the shape of the vehicle at second glance"

Vivid Momentum Simon Haynes, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Design, Goodwood The designer from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ coachbuilding division has revived and reinterpreted a legendary paint scheme for BMW racing cars from the 1970s and reinterpreted it as “Vivid Momentum”: "This task was very different from what I do in my normal job, but I was able to bring my passion for motorsport to bear. My design is a tribute to one of BMW's most striking racing designs, which stood out from the other designs of its time. The concentric rings play with the original disc motif and radiate from the front wheel to the rear. In addition, the vehicle has a semitone structure that changes from a solid black to an intense metallic red from front to back. This highlights the sense of speed and gives the vehicle a forward facing attitude"

The Power of Four Wesselka Mandowa-Maier, Designworks, Los Angeles. The Bulgarian-born designer, who after ten years in the service of MINI Design has been working in the Designworks Studio in California since 2019, was inspired by the classic BMW M colors light blue, dark blue and red, which stand for power and dynamics: "I have named my design 'The Power of Four'. I was inspired by the numbers in the name of the BMW M4 GT4, which also stands for the unimaginable power the engine puts on the race track. And only connected to the track by the four wheels. To support this idea in the design, all four views of the vehicle are abstractly divided by four. The classic BMW M colors are vibrant and powerful and give the vehicle additional energy."

Fluid Power Li Tianyuan, BMW i Design, Munich The exterior designer from BMW i relied on influences from his home country for his design:  "My main inspiration was calligraphy and Chinese painting with the contrast of black and white and the perfect balance between elegance and power. The design of the vehicle is asymmetrical. Two goldfish, which in China stand for perfection and happiness, but also symbolize powerful movement with their caudal fins, swim in a circle around the driver from above and place him in the center. In addition to the Arabic numeral 4, this number is also applied to the bodywork as a traditional Chinese calligraphy mark. This stands for the tolerance and openness of a great brand like BMW towards the entire world’s culture and at the same time gives the M4 GT4 a very special, timeless and unforgettable appearance."

Actor and comedian David Spade will be auctioning off his personal 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona today at no reserve. Spade admits that he always wanted a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 and was fortunate to acquire one back in 2013. But now, it is time to part ways with the beauty, and Spade says that he cannot think of a better place to do so than at the renowned Barrett-Jackson auction.

While David says that he will be moving on and looking for something new, he offers no insight into what that vehicle might be. Regardless, it’s safe to assume that fans and Mustang aficionados alike will be more than eager to bring this stunner home to their garage.   The celebrity ownership history is surely going to help attract plenty of bids and raise the price of this ’69 Mach 1 all the same. The only thing that might have car enthusiasts shaking their heads is the fact that this Mustang is not a manual. When explaining why he chose automatic, Spade said that navigating through Los Angeles traffic in his stick shift was becoming quite the chore. He also added: “It’s perfect for doing donuts in the Chili’s parking lot.” 

This 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 features a Dark Gray Metallic exterior paint which Spade explains as an “anthracite” color. It sits on Magnum 500-style 14-inch wheels with Sport Slats rear window louvers, and front and rear spoilers. The interior on this classic is black vinyl and appears to be in excellent condition from the photos provided. Under the hood, this classic is powered by Ford’s 351ci Windsor V8 engine mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. David Space expresses his love for the vehicle as he prepares to say goodbye to his pride and joy. “It drives fast and is a lot of fun,” he adds.

This car was originally ordered through the Twin Cities District Sales Office and manufactured on June 20, 1969. During prior ownership, the engine and transmission were rebuilt, and modifications are said to include .030 over pistons, a polished crankshaft, ported and polished cylinder heads with hardened valve seats, Pertronix ignition, and auxiliary gauges. A standard Marti Report is also included with the purchase of this vehicle.
