Chris Kurtz is trying to keep his sense of humor. Even after the VA told him last summer that he no longer needs a caregiver.

"Apparently my legs grew back, I dunno," he says with a laugh, and sinks into his couch in Clarksville, Tenn. And then he mentions that he probably can't get out of the couch without help from his wife.

In December 2010, a bomb blast ended his Army deployment to Afghanistan. He lost both legs above the knee and half of his left hand. Heather, then his fiancée, joined him at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the VA suggested she apply for their new caregiver program.

The program was set up to support family members of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. They're mostly wives and mothers who receive a VA stipend to provide home health care that would otherwise cost the VA millions of dollars.

When it started in 2011, vets signed up in huge numbers, quickly overwhelming the VA staff assigned to the program.

In recent years many VAs have drastically cut theirrolls — often with little explanation to the caregivers.

The cuts come at a time the program is supposed to be growing. Congress approved a major expansion of the program in May, though implementation could take years.

Congressional sources confirmed that the VA has missed its first deadline in October to implement new information technology for the caregiver expansion — raising serious concerns of further delay. VA says the department will not deploy the new system until it is ready and has been tested thoroughly.

But VA also recently blew through a deadline to fix the IT for a new GI bill rule, and did so without initially telling Congress about the delay.

Chris and Heather Kurtz had been getting the highest level of support — Tier 3. That meant a stipend, health care for Heather and quarterly visits from a nurse. But earlier this year, Heather Kurtz was told her standing in the program was being evaluated. And without anyone from the VA even coming to see them, the Kurtzes got dropped in July.

Not reduced to a lower tier, but simply told that Chris no longer needs any help from Heather.

The power of prayer, proper diagnosis, treatment and therapy. I chose to believe that miracles are possible, and God’s promises never change. I also believe that God has given us wisdom including modern medicine. To deny either of those in my opinion is just plain stupid. For me, it’s all about balancing faith and wisdom in whatever ever form they may take. With that said, my career in law enforcement will now serve as motivation as I begin preparing to gain acceptance into medical school. Had I never accepted that if I didn’t get the help I needed, I would lose my family. We would never have never known what balance and true happiness looks like. Through the course of my journey, my family and I have lost some of the people closest to us. As we (my family) look back now, we realize it had to happen in order for us to have this new opportunity. FYI we are not selling our house and moving away, but my career with CPD is drawing to an end...which means I better start selling some houses so I don’t have to start stripping to pay for college (FixItJesus). So ya...hopefully this helps someone who is or has a loved one who struggles with any type of issues. One of my biggest Intrusive thoughts is thinking that I don't have a legacy. I was raised by so many people growing up. My parents couldn't raise me and the state was about to take me away. I mainly lived with my grandparents but I was also shuffled around a lot when I was little. Because of that there was a lot of trauma. On top of that I'm trans and I've given up my religion. Because of that I've felt like I don't have roots and I've wondered what if anything I inherited from this woman. After countless hours of thinking I finally figured it out.

There was a time when I was about eight and Mom and I were at Kroger. We bundled all of our groceries together and now we just had to walk the quarter mile to my grandmother Pat’s house. It was a grey sky with looming black clouds on the west. When we walked outside we started to get that prickly feeling in our arms where you just know a big storm is coming. We knew that we had to move quickly to outrun this storm.

Now everyone that knows my mom Margaret Young knows that she could not move quickly, she couldn't see very well, and she was making decisions on a…higher plane…than the rest of us. She walked to the Dollar Store where she bought two ponchos and an umbrella. She wrapped me in one of them, threw our groceries in a borrowed shopping cart, and covered them with the second poncho. Off we went behind the Krogers and up the hill to Pat's house with me in a poncho that looks like a dress, pushing a cart full of groceries with my half blind limping mother leading the way.

Of course it started storming immediately. We’re steadily trudging along. Our shoes are getting soaked, the road is getting slippery, and Momma’s umbrella turned upside down within two seconds. We crested the hill and I could see through the rain that Pat’s house was not that far away so I ran the cart down the last hundred yards. I stood on the porch and yelled back to her “run Mom, run”. My eight year old brain didn’t know that this was the most dangerous part for her. She can’t see and she’s walking down a slippery hill hoping that she doesn’t slip and slide the rest of the way. I have a feeling that all she was thinking was “I have to get to the house because I have the key to get in.”

We get in and Momma gets my wet clothes off and puts me in the bath. Eventually Pat comes home and she is treated to a sight that was all too common: a shopping cart in the middle of the yard, a soggy grandson, and a crazy tale from Mom. When she heard all this she asked the question that was probably on all of your minds as you read the story.

“Why didn’t you wait on a bench under the awning of the store and wait for the storm to clear?”

My mom, with a straight face, looked Pat dead in the eye and said, “What would be the fun in that?”

I think this is what I inherited from Momma: the ability to walk through a storm and laugh at it. No matter what that storm was: my own illness, homelessness, adversity, or healing I've been able to walk through it all with my wife Dana by my side while thumbing my nose at the thunder.

I flew back to Clarksville from New Jersey for Mom's funeral. I was such a bundle of emotions. I was mad, weary, distraught. This was my first time home since coming out as trans. This was my first time back in four years. We kept on saying that we were going to come home for Christmas but then the pandemic hit and we were so scared. We were also scarred both emotionally and physically. Three days before this I had my second therapy session talking about my trauma. I had been living my whole life in a storm. For the life of me I couldn't find my way out.

On my first morning in Clarksville I got in front of a group of family, friends, and people from the church I had fled from years ago. I started with a throwaway joke like "I don't think there will be another person like Margaret Young and that's great because I don't think the world was ready for her the first time." Then I heard the ripple of laughter cascade through the crowd. No matter what I thought about these people the one thing that bound us in that moment is that they had loved my mom. Then as I got through this story I heard more laughter. Most of the people in this room had their own Margaret Young story. It was our initiation ritual into this little club of people whose lives were affected by her life.

Then I said this: "For all of you that have been walking in life with Margaret these past years take this one truth to heart: her storm is over. She's safe now and free from pain and worry." My grandmother broke down. This person that I was harboring so much anger and animosity towards at the moment, the person I was so afraid of, was human. No matter how much she was the author of my trauma she and I both had been in this storm together with mom. I could feel the same burden fall off of her shoulders as it had mine. I now know that I hadn't been walking in this storm alone. We had both been in this together and somehow we are forever bonded by this trauma. Just like with Mom I can't walk this part of the journey with her. I just hope she can find her own rainbow on the other side.

Chapter 28

December 25, 2014: Tennessee:

Lucy chose to celebrate both Christmas and New Year at home with her family. Knowing deep in her heart what her mother’s diagnosis was, she didn’t want to spend her mother’s last potential Christmas and New Year away from her. Her grandfather came in from Canada, and the family took plenty of photos for memories. They really made sure to enjoy each moment they had together.

Lucy had plans to enter law school, but due to her mother’s illness, she elected to take a semester and the summer off to be with her. Her mother’s health slowly deteriorated. The family made the decision to fly to Rochester, Minnesota, to the Mayo Clinic in a last-ditch effort to see if anything could be done and in hopes that the diagnosis in Tennessee was wrong. Lucy found herself crying to sleep bargaining with God. “Please, please God. If you save Momma, I’ll give up all my future happiness. I won’t get married. I won’t have kids. I won’t even go to law school. Just please don’t take my Momma!”

February 24, 2015: Wheat, Tennessee:

“It’s 7:00 pm. We HAVE to get on the road, Daddy!” Lucy said.

“I know. Your mother is just moving slow,” her father replied.

“Why don’t we just stay home tonight and leave early in the morning to drive to Minnesota?”

“That’s not a bad idea. I will get tired driving.”

They go together to mention it to Ann. Ann responds by crying and saying, “I want to leave tonight!!” They know her mind is slipping and crying has become a norm. So they agree to leave once she gets ready.

They load up the car and pull out of their driveway at 7:30. They drive to Clarksville, Tennessee, and stop to get gas. They also decide to grab some food for the road. The only option was Wendy’s, which is a fast food restaurant where Lucy got food poisoning her sophomore year of college. She hadn’t eaten it since. She looks to her brother, Will and says, “Well. I guess it’s time I try their food again. Hopefully, this time I won’t get food poisoning.”

After they drove for another hour, they stopped at a hotel. Will offered to keep driving for his father, but Thomas refused, “Your mother is tired. We need to rest.”

The next day, they are up at 8:00 am to continue the long drive to Minnesota. Will does help his father out on the drive, but once they get to Iowa, Thomas refuses to let his son drive.

“Will, there’s still a bit of snow. Let me drive.”

Ann insists on stopping by a local Target to get a new make-up mirror after Thomas accidentally dropped hers loading it in the car. He rolls his eyes but agrees. Will looks to his sister, “It didn’t shatter, though...”

“I know, but she’s insisting.”

They go into Target and waste a good hour. Thomas was starting to get irritated because it was getting quite late. They finally get back in the car at 9:00pm with still 5 hours to go until they reach Rochester.

They pull into the Residence Inn around midnight and get checked in. They know it’s going to be a long few days.

February 25, 2015: Rochester, Minnesota:

The family loads up in the car to drive the few blocks to the Mayo Clinic. It’s 18 degrees, and their Southern blood is not accustomed to this type of cold. They walk in the building and Lucy says to her family, “Geez, I didn’t know we were going to freaking Canada cold.” She immediately regrets the decision to not bring a thick jacket.

They get all checked in and wait for their time to be called back to meet the neurologist. By 9:45am, they are in the office of Dr. Josephs. He walks in the room and shakes everyone’s hand. He sees that Lucy is wearing a Tennessee shirt, and he says with a smile, “Oh no! I didn’t realize I’d be treating Vol fans!”

Lucy laughs and says, “I think we should rethink this thing since we found out he’s a Florida alum and Gator fan.” The family and Dr. Josephs talk SEC football for a few minutes to break the ice. Dr. Josephs jokes to Will that if he wanted to be successful in the NFL, he should have played at Florida. Will says, “Sorry, sir. I’d rather lose as a Vol than ever win as a Gator.” That gives the entire family a good laugh.

Dr. Josephs examines Ann. He makes her walk around the room, speak, move her tongue, and tests her strength. Lucy’s dad has tears in his eyes as he looks to his two children and says three letters, “ALS”.

Lucy, still in denial, shakes her head. The doctor completes his evaluation and organizes an array of different tests for the week. One sleep test will have to be completed overnight in the hotel. Ann and Thomas attend the meeting on how to work the machine while Will and Lucy send text messages and calls to family back home in Tennessee to update them.

The next day Ann has a PET scan, EKG, speech therapy, and lung exam. After the tests, Ann wants to go to the local mall. The family agrees, and they spend a few hours together trying to forget their troubles.

February 27, 2015:

Ann has an appointment at 8:00am. Will and Lucy decide to stay back since the room will be small for all four of them plus the doctor. They end up watching the Minnesota Wild interviews and mocking them the entire time for not being their Boston Bruins. They spent a lot of time growing up in Quebec with their maternal grandfather, but no matter how hard he tried, they refused to cheer on the Montreal Canadiens. He told Thomas, “You’ve ruined my grandchildren. You have them cheering on Boston!”

Thomas told him, “No, sir. That’s just good parenting.” They have a good relationship, so jokes like these are the norm.

Lucy and Will are ready to go when their parents return. Their mother wants a short nap before they drive to Minneapolis to go to the Mall of America.

After a couple of hours, they load up and head to the mall. They park in the garage and look to see their level. It said EAST TENNESSEE. Ann joked, “Well, we won’t be able to forget that now will we?”

They decide to eat at a barbecue restaurant in the mall. Will tells his father, “Well, the food is good. It’s just....”

Lucy interrupts, “It’s not our barbecue. There’s no spice. It’s all sweet here. They can make their damn ribs sweet, but God forbid them make any sweet tea!” This, of course, sets the whole family into a fit of laughter.

They explore the mall with Lucy wanting to try the CSI Experience, but her father reminds her that her mother wouldn’t be able to go through it. Ann was getting tired quite easily, and something like that would only exhaust her. Ann, Thomas, and Will decide to go into the Brookstone store. Lucy has her sights set on Zara. She tells her father and wanders off.

Around 30 minutes later, her family appears beside her as she’s looking at scarves. Ann looks to Thomas, “I told you. I know my baby.”

Lucy is confused as she looks to her brother. Will responds, “Well, we realized in Brookstone that you weren’t with us. Dad remembered you saying you were going to another store, but he didn’t know the name of it. Mom walks out of Brookstone and immediately comes here and to this section. So, she’s telling Dad that she knows her child.”

Lucy hugs her mom and says, “Oh, Momma. I love you.”

They end up heading back to Rochester and a bit disappointed in the Mall of America. Both Lucy and Ann were expecting more, while Thomas and Will were expecting nothing.

The next day they see Dr. Josephs again. He orders a few more tests, but they couldn’t be scheduled until May. So the family chooses to begin their drive home the next day. They want to take the scenic route by going through South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas.

March 1, 2015: Omaha, Nebraska:

They family is driving through Omaha as they hear a phone ring. Thomas answers to hear Dr. Josephs on the line. He pulls over to the side of the highway and speaks to the doctor for a moment. After he hangs up, he tells his family what the doctor said.

“He said that he had a patient a few years ago with the same symptoms. It turned out that it was Lyme disease and not something more serious. He wants you to get another blood test when we get back to Tennessee and send it to the Mayo.”

Lucy breaks into tears and calls her aunt, “They said it could just be Lyme disease! So it’s not ALS!” Lucy took this as a sign that her mother would be alright, and things could get back to normal.

The family decides to eat at Longhorn Steakhouse before finding a hotel for the evening. Lucy gets chicken fingers and notices that they are extremely salty. As a lover of salt, she thinks nothing of it.

They have to drive for another hour to find a hotel with a room available. They settle in, take their showers, and lay down to sleep. About 4:00am, Lucy wakes up feeling sick. She gets up to go to the bathroom but the nausea subsides. She lays back down, but just a few seconds later the sickness is back. She jumps up and goes to the bathroom. She lays on the floor for a few minutes before she gets sick three times.

She goes to wake her mother up, out of habit, to see if they have any medicine to calm her stomach. Her dad gets up and finds some in the suitcase. He asks her, “Lucy, why didn’t you wake me up instead?”

“I know, Daddy. It’s just a habit. You automatically go to your mother.”

He hugs her and tells her to take the medicine and lay down. He gets her a cup of water and tells her to take tiny sips until she knows her stomach can handle it. She finally falls back asleep wishing she could just be dropped off at the Kansas City airport to fly home instead of having to continue on the 13 more hours home in the car.

Jeanette Omega Quinn West

Jeanette Omega Quinn West passed away February 8, 2020. A lifelong resident of Spartanburg, she was born on March 24, 1935 to the late Albert Cleveland Quinn and Minnie Lee Hope Quinn Perry. She was the youngest of seven girls. She was the loving wife of Sam Ray West for 62 years. She is survived by her daughters, Pam Gault of Boiling Springs and Cindy West of Spartanburg; two grandsons, Brad White (Jen) of Spartanburg and Justin Gault (Kimberly) of Greer and three great-grandchildren, Abigail Quinn White, Skylar Justin Gault and Liam Williams. She is also survived by one sister, Joan Goins of Clarksville, TN, one sister-in-law, Polly Jones of Spartanburg and one brother-in-law, Charner West of Landrum. She was a member of the Love Class at Cudd Memorial Baptist Church in Spartanburg. Omega retired from Milliken and Co. after more than 20 years of service. Upon retiring, she and Sam were fortunate enough to be able to travel, sometimes with family and sometimes with friends, but they never hesitated to make the most of their retirement. For many years, they were avid ballroom dancers and what a handsome couple they made - Omega in her beautiful ball gowns and Sam in his tuxedo and matching cummerbund and bowtie. If you ever had a meal that Omega fixed, what a treat! It was generally two meats, maybe six vegetables, a couple of desserts and the best iced tea around. You didn’t forget it and hoped to be invited back real soon. She could bake the best cakes. Her door was always open for family, friends and strangers for a meal, a bed or just to visit. Nieces, nephews, and many others often thought of Omega as a second mother. Talk about a green thumb…she had two green thumbs. She loved working in her yard, said it was her therapy, and her yard was always beautiful. She loved going to Lowe’s, buying flowers from their “sale” section (which usually were pitiful) and after a week or two of her green thumb magic, they would be beautiful. She just had that touch. Omega was the ultimate caregiver. After she retired, she sat with and cared for a number of different people over the course of several years. She didn’t just “sit” with them but made every effort to give them the best possible care. Her last “job” as a caregiver was taking care of Sam, which she did with tender loving care. She was so blessed, and we were so thankful, that in her final days she was able to be at home and was cared for daily by her grandson Brad. He took good care of his Nana. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her (including her granddog – Coco) but we are so thankful for all the wonderful memories. Visitation will be at 10:45 – 11:45 AM Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A funeral service will be at 12:00 Noon, at the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Dusty Martin. Catherine and Tim Peterson just recently opened their quilt shop on Church Street in downtown Selbyville.

Not only is it efficient to do, my turnaround is usually less than a month,” Catherine Peterson said. “I know, some places, it’s a six-month turnaround. I wouldn’t want my quilt gone for that long. Standard sewing machines can’t easily handle much more than a lap blanket or baby quilt, but Catherine’s Quilting can handle large-scale projects.

“Doing that at home is really hard on a home machine. There’s not enough space. Trying to fit all that fabric under there is hard,” Peterson said. “Usually people bring in twin, king, queen… because those are the larger ones that you can’t do at home.”

Customers can choose from about 100 styles of stitching, from simple swirls to complex feathers and flowers.

“Most people want a fairly simplified but elegant pattern” based on their quilt design, Peterson said. “We talk about what they want to show off, what they want to bring out. You want it to complement it and show the strengths of the piece. … I’m there to complement them.”

The professional finishing touch lets customers enjoy more detail, so they can put “a little more heart into it,” she said.

Catherine’s Quilting uses an Innova longarm quilting system.

“It’s a computerized machine that runs with robotics,” but Peterson still threads the needle and bobbin herself. The machine automatically sews a complete row before Peterson positions it at the next block. It automatically knows when a thread breaks or stitch skips.

She stitches the final binding by hand.

Peterson said she always enjoyed sewing but was inspired by her own mother (a quilting guild founder) and quilting shows with hands-on demonstrations.

Peterson has quilted for more than 20 years, including professionally for the past six years from her home, as Cladagh Quilting. This is her first freestanding storefront.

After decades as an electronics shop, the Church Street property re-opened as the Petersons’ quilt shop in December.

“It’s been a fantastic experience,” Peterson said. “Everybody that comes — people just come in to say hello — they’ve just been so friendly. The town has been so wonderful. It’s been a really, really good experience. I’m glad I jumped into it.”

On a Clarksville farm, the Petersons are raising their own boys, some chickens, donkeys and a herd of Shetland sheep (a heritage breed whose wool Catherine Peterson hopes to someday use for yarn). The Selbyville shop opened with help from the whole family.

Of why she loves quilting, Peterson said, “It’s my therapy. … I’m also a nurse. I’ve been in critical care, ICU, for over 26 years now … and I find myself coming back to this, as I need to slow down and re-focus.”

Her goal is to retire from nursing to do quilting full-time.
