autumn is in the air!!! today i could feel it in the breeze and smell it in the wind. it was only 14 degrees outside and it truly felt like a fresh, crisp autumnal tuesday. my longing for the ber months has officially been ignited! i’m sooo excited for fall to arrive and everything it’ll bring with it; honeycrisp apple picking, trees full of golden leaves, my town’s little annual fair, etc etc etc. this year my boyfriend and i are going to try and watch more horror films in the month of october; particularly foreign horror, because there’s a few french and korean films that have been on our list for years now that we still haven’t gotten around to (*ﾉωﾉ)

anyway i stumbled across this lil patch of pretty pink flowers today and i wanted to share them, because i thought they were just the cutest things and they made me smile (ㅅ´ ˘ `) i hope they make you smile, too!

i sat by them for a little and watched a fuzzy lil bumble prance from flower to flower, working hard!! i took a picture of the bumble, too ehehe c: they’re below the cut, if you wanna see! εწз

There’s some rewriting past actions and relationships and a lot more world-building but the kind that creates more questions. This chapter also contains many statements and observations that make no sense due to lack of previous context in the series (or outright lies), so I’m just really fighting my way through. And it’s only the first proper chapter.

The chapter begins with Jordan giving Jace Jedi training.

An independent eye → Jace cracked his eye open.

God forbid they actually want to spend time together as well and support Jace.

Jordan and Jace have very different views on things that are relaxing and so the meditating session isn’t going well. Then Simon and Clary appear.

Fact check time. Clary and Simon go to Java Jones in City of Bones chapter 3 “Shadowhunter.” Simon immediately goes to get them coffee and Clary goes to find them a seat. A random blonde girl asks Clary whether Simon was her boyfriend, had a girlfriend, or was gay. Clary doesn’t get to respond as Simon returns with their coffees and:

Clary tried to hide a smile as she watched him. Normally she never thought about whether Simon was good-looking or not. He had pretty dark eyes, she supposed, and he’d filled out well over the past year or so.

Clary has an inner battle whether to tell Simon about the girl being interested in him, but decides to tell him and they talk about girls. Clary is resentful and Simon is gloomy and then agitated and then looks faintly greenish. Neither of them seemingly are having particularly fun time nor are laughing like the scene here seems to imply. Then Jace appears and Clary leaves Java Jones going after him. After that the phone call happens and Clary leaves with Jace to check on Jocelyn.

→ There is strange insistency on rewriting history when the scene in Java Jones was nothing like this. They were barely even there before Clary left. The only thing true here is Clary leaving Simon behind and following Jace out to talk to him.

Aside from totally loving the subtext being once again spelled out

→ tense change, new thought, so new paragraph

→ Clary has yet to convince me

Period.

Participle phrases indicate concurrency. Jordan be gone, as in no longer present, while still being in the middle of leaving (in line of sight).

→ He gave a mock salute and slipped into the trees, vanishing with the silent tread…

Blood doesn’t have a pulse. Either “his veins pulsating” or just “pulse”

That’s anything this series as a whole has. Besides, what do you expect, kissing out in the open and right in front of them? (It’s a joke, I know)

→ Would’ve loved this energy in the other books as well, not just in the final one. That makes this rather disingenuous.

→ How would Alec know when Jace has a strange way of showing it (meaning not at all)?

By all accounts there is so much reliable narrative and evidence of Sebastian being a threat. They, whoever they even are, don’t want to believe it because it’s convenient for the plot. Again.

The transition from this to Jace (and Clary) being well-loved by the Clave is weird because there no proper bridge between the two points. Also interested in seeing where this book takes Clary’s trauma, because I don’t remember a lot.

Go away, Clary. This also doesn’t really explain why the bodies could not be examined nonetheless. Old remains can still be examined.

In the Codex it is said that it is often believed that when a Shadowhunter names a seraph blade, the blade not only becomes engulfed by heavenly fire, but some of the named angel's spirit is infused into the blade as well. So is it not believed or is it not just true? Where would the belief and thus the heavenly fire come from if they never managed to capture it in a weapon?

→ Why are two former Shadowhunters celebrating Thanksgiving while it seems to escape a Shadowhunter that is oblivious of such mundane celebrations? For the joke? Okay.

→ Why would the Shadowhunters be annoyed at being left out? Since here they evidently have their own celebrations as well. Why would they care about mundane holidays based on mundane religions they do not even adhere to because ALL THE STORIES ARE TRUE? The idea of being “left out” is stupid because they do not celebrate it with mundane world anyway. Additionally it seems the Shadowhunters celebrate Christmas in a very modern sense (a cultural celebration) because their celebration has nothing to do with Christ, and Clare actively seems to avoid the original meaning of Christmas (being central to Christianity).

→ How thoughtful of you to remember that.

The Lightwood-Herondales have to return to the Institute for a shindig, and Simon and Clary go for Christmas/Hanukkah shopping.

Why would they be though? They are Shadowhunters, but they can appreciate the atmosphere of Christmastime still.

→ Can’t believe we are still in this point after the whole debacle in City of Fallen Angels.

→ We have encapsulated Isabelle’s essence to perfumes (and Magnus to body glitter). Calls nicely back to City of Bones, but per Clary’s judgement then, Isabelle wants to smell like desserts. (love the transition from contempt to support though)

Since we have touched upon the subject here, I still hate the thought never goes deeper than that. So I’ll direct here.

Can’t trust the Clave to handle anything but can trust the Clave not to drop the ball with Simon. Right.

Worried Jocelyn appears out of nowhere and tells Clary they have to go to the Institute at once.

Just for the sake of having pointed one these (of the many) out → A Cold washed through her veins.

We cut to Jace visiting Magnus.

Once again, I’ll direct here. Love that no matter what, Jace has Alec’s back despite Alec being in the wrong (in principle, but what I think is elaborated in that other post.)  Also the idea that it would be a happy relationship if their friends managed to convince Magnus is just nonsense.

→ What a dumb fucking question (in the seemingly obvious context of Jace being Alec’s parabatai, not that his actions in the past generally ever indicate this being the case)

→ You could’ve fit ‘my brother’ in there somewhere

→ You don’t really care about yourself so the bar is not that high

Jace gets a call from Isabelle. She tells him to return to the Institute immediately because they have learned that Sebastian has happened. Jace leaves Magnus with an epic burn and we cut to the Institute, where Sebastian’s actions are revelead.

→ Why aren’t they fully informed?

→ Why did they not react after the first? Why wait for this meeting after two?

→ Why the breaches are such a mystery? Sebastian, no matter what, is still Nephilim. What stops him from entering any Institute at will anyway?

→ What intelligence and where? How did they come to this conclusion?

→ Why didn't they take into account the safety of the Institutes as well? It’s ridiculous that none of the Clave have brains.

The Clave has called for immediate evacuation for all the Institutes. Yay, we’re going back to Idris.

Finished City of Fallen Angels and I’m SO UPSET. Jace literally cannot win and it’s making me MAD!!! WDYM HE’S BONDED TO SEBASTIAN NOW! GET THAT FREAKAZOID AWAY FROM MY BELOVED! Ugh I’m so pissed…and I have TWO MORE BOOKS TO GO…shit is gonna get wayyyy worse before it gets better I fear…poor Clary she can’t catch a break either…smh. Also the whole turning babies into demons thing was so fucked like wdym Lilith had a whole room of dead babies…girlie was on something methinks. Mind you I’ve read much worse *COUGH* Tender Is The Flesh *COUGH* but still…anything involving torturing infants always gets me. ANYWAYS. I love Jace bro PLEASE CASSANDRA MAKE IT STOP! LET MY LOVE LIVE! LET MY BLONDE SARCASTIC BLORBO LIVE! Ugh. Also this book took me wayyyy longer to read, so I’ll be reading something else in between this one and City of Lost Souls. Maybe Bloodguard by Cecy Robson…I need something terribly written as a palate cleanser.

Bringing back this AU concept i thought of a long while back where Alec loses his memories at the end of the Shadowhunters TV universe instead of Clary as punishment for not only summoning a Prince of Hell but wagering deals with one or whatever idk I didn't get that far but ANYWAYS.

Him living with his mom and going to college while working at a cute coffee shop / wearing a pride pin on his apron and Magnus being his favorite customer because he always tips him really well :(

And wait over time he’d develop a crush on Magnus but like he doesn’t want to say anything because the man is a customer and he’s obviously married by the looks of the wedding ring on his finger :((

He likes Friday night shifts because that’s open mic night and there’s this band called Rock Solid Panda that plays and they sound ok plus the singer’s friend had really weird tattoos that Alec just can’t seem to wrap his head around :(((

And the lead singer's girlfriend once called him hermano when he came to clean up their dishes after a show and now his coworkers tease him about it, but strangely, she does sort of look like him :((((

Sometimes him and his classmates go to this bar after a really hard exam and the bartender is nice and funny and they like to share complaints about annoying customers they had both dealt with that week but he feels bad for her because she has a big scar on her neck :(((((

And he’s not really the religious type but his mom insist they go to church some nights, and there’s this new pastor there, he seems young but he’s good, in fact sometimes if he looks over his shoulder he thinks he sees a man that looks like Magnus standing in the back, he looks proud??

Also he likes to donate blood at the local hospital sometimes, the nurse there is really sweet, he asks her about the drawings pinned on her station wall, she smiles softly and tells him her daughter drew them. But why do one of the men in the drawings look like him :(((((

Oh and some nights when he’s drowning in homework his mom’s boyfriend comes by and brings Chinese food, Alec really likes it and asks Luke to show him a menu for the next time he wants to order it, but, that’s a strange name for lo mein, and what are seelie kelp noodles?

He typically works the closing shifts at work, he tends to prefer the night shifts because they are slower and he can focus on his school load, he loved being a public policy major but god was there a lot of reading. He heard about a study method that included scribbling on a piece of paper while he read. One time, he was locked in on chapter when he heard the front door chime and in walked a tall blonde man in a leather jacket, when he greeted the man he looked downright nauseous, which, Alec wasn't sure what was to be said about his own appearance in that moment. The man ordered a black coffee to go but avoided eye contact with him which confused Alec even more, but nonetheless he turned to the coffee maker and began to pour him a cup.

It was when he turned back to hand him the cup, when things got weird. The other man was staring intensely at his notebook, thinking he was probably confused by the random scribbles he went to explain when he realized the page was indeed not filled with random scribbles but rather the same scribble over and over again.

The man left before Alec could say anything more, leaving him with the cup of coffee. But something changed in that moment, seeing the unintentional drawing, its resemblance to the tattoos he had seen all around him but this one specifically not being one he had seen on any of his customers, coupled with this strange man who, if Alec was completely honest, felt like someone he knew deeply, maybe in this life or another.

So strange, definitely a story to tell his mom once he got home.

Of Morgenstern family history, inconsistencies as to previous books and plot, and me generally just not getting it.

Not as glorious as she makes it sound because it was less to do with glory and more to do with stupidity. First she makes the demons aware of her presence and then tries to battle them with ornamental axes, which probably would be funny if I had more tolerance for Clary’s bullshit.

Back to the point I made in chapter 12: Why does it matter where to rune is placed? The series has barely told us anything about the workings of runes, it has barely made any sense with the use of them. Do you benefit more having the mendelin rune where Clary has it or does it actually matter?

I don’t understand how unbuttoning a shirt hides any stains.

Sebastian and Clary talk about stuff: what the demons were talking about, Sebastian telling Clary about the plan but actually lying, how Sebastian thinks Valentine was wrong etc. Sebastian then invites Clary to join him on one of his excursions in order for him to prove himself to her. Then we cut to Team Good

This idiot is surprised that Alec defended his sister and didn’t let his boyfriend air out his frustrations unfairly on her. It is to drive the wedge further down, not that Alec would otherwise defend Isabelle since none of them defend each other when actually some standing up is required.

Team Good get the news about Luke being awake, and they begin to plan for the summoning of Raziel. Not a lot happens there on that front, and we’re back with Sebastian and Clary.

Clary has already commented on Sebastian’s looks in the beginning of the book. I don’t get why this point needs to be reiterated here just because he gets glances from girls.

“So this was what her brother looked like. Really looked like, alive and moving and animated. A pale face, all angles and planes, tall and slim in black gear. His hair was silvery white, not dark as it had been when she had first seen him, dyed to match the color of the real Sebastian Verlac’s. His own pale color suited him better. His eyes were black and snapping with life and energy.” –Chapter 3 “Bad Angels”

And it's not even the first or the last time Clare keeps describing him like this.

→ It’s because it is the only sense of humor Clare knows how to write.

→ Jace doesn’t smile either. He smirks and grins like an ass.

→ Sebastian just said that Clary didn’t kill Valentine. Valentine died because of Clary.

→ Funny how Clary never thought to ask Jocelyn about her middle name. Seraphina would’ve been a lot cooler, but also a lot more on the nose and edgy.

→ Clarissa Seraphina Morgenstern. Pretty cool. It’s probably all those Rs that make it sound strong. But Clarissa Adele Fairchild suits her character better.

I did enjoy this part where Sebastian tells Clary about the Morgensterns. It was interesting.

It’s funny how Sebastian paints Jocelyn as the villain and ruthless woman who betrayed her husband in the cruelest of ways, simultaneously brushing past all the horrible things Valentine did to her and was as a person.

Sebastian and Clary then arrive at a place where Clary meets a disgraced Iron Sister Magdalena.

Glad that that plot hole has finally been answered. In the fifth book and not where it was supposed to be.

However, in City of Bones, Luke explains that the Circle ”allied themselves with demons—the greatest enemies of Shadowhunters—in order to procure weapons that could be smuggled undetected into the Great Hall of the Angel, where the Accords would be signed.”

So where do we stand on that now since it was apparently Magdalena who armed them? Also why would they need an Iron Sister arming them when they were just good ol’ regular Nephilim with the access to weaponry anyway? Did Clare just try to cover a plot hole with a nonsensical answer?

Not even the Parisian ones passing by?

Sebastian hands over the chunk of adamas for Magdalena to craft into what he asked. Which we know is a cup. Clary and Sebastian start to leave, and Magdalena makes a comment how they look exactly like their parents. Which fair, because they are the exact copies of them where looks are concerned.

I finished City of Ashes. I love Jace, and I finally like Clary—most of the time. Screw Valentine, he can kiss my ass, and IT WAS TOTALLLYYYY IMPLIED THAT JACE WAS A HERONDALE WITH IMOGEN OH MY GODDDD—

Well….I’m about 8 chapters in to City of Ashes and THEY ARE KISSING…listen. I love Jace. I like Clary, somewhat. She is still growing on me. BUT WHYYY ARE THEY KISSING IF THEY ARE SIBLINGS TELL ME WHY CASSANDRAAAA oh my god. THEY CLEARLY AREN’T SO WHY WOULD SHE WRITE THIS anyways…sighs…this one is much better than the first, and I still love my blorbo, despite all the shit he’s going through. This will become a Jace fan page. Still so weirded out by the siblings stuff but alas…I love Jace too much to not continue…I will say that the plot in this one is much better compared to the first one, and I’m eager to see what else happens. I don’t remember much of these books other than a few big plot points, hence why I’m rereading them. I’ll update once I’m further along!! Also rip Brother Jeremiah he was a real one.
