Writing day with The Claire. I made lemon madeleines (new recipe!) and brewed a couple pots of tea and, time spent on the Seahawks notwithstanding, we’ve had a pretty good day in our respective stories.

I added +8300 words to the novel this last week and there are 2.5 weeks of ‘finishmybookcation’ left. I’m going for it.

i. How many works in progress do you currently have?

I have three AU’s on AO3 that sorely need updating, and three fics in drafts on my google docs.  There might be an idea here and there in my notes as well.  Let’s just round it off at 12 ideas at any given time.  

ii. Do you/would you write fanfiction?

Yes I do.  I like that it gives me the flexibility to work with character emotion, maintain character consistency, and experiment with world-building if I so choose.  I keep almost every scrap of writing because you never know when you might need it for a bigger work. 

iii. Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?

I’ll find free e-books if everyone’s gushing about a book and I want to get it read fast so I can join in the discussion (what I did with Six of Crows), but I love paper books.

iv. When did you start writing?

oh man, my sister told me that when we shared a bunkbed (I would have been around 4),  I kept her up at night with storytelling.  In eighth grade, I wrote in my yearbook that I wanted to be a novelist, and that’s probably when I started.  Fifth grade would have had my first story about .... a girl whose skin turned all colors of the rainbow.  

v. Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?

I had my boyfriend read one ficlet... because it was inspired by all the cuddling we do.  And I also pitch ideas to him, he gives me information about particular eras, guns, armies, etc.  I’m very excited for all the writing I’ll be able to do when I live with him.   He’ll be gaming and I’ll be writing lmao. 

vi. Where is your favourite place to write?

Oh.... I think I can write just about anywhere.  But I love nooks and corners of rooms.  

vii. Favorite childhood book?

Harry Potter, but the Little House on the Prairie series had a huge impact on me as well.

viii. Writing for fun or publication?

Writing for fun now, hopefully publishing in the near future.  If I can get my life together, maybe I’ll have an agent by next fall. 

ix. Pen and paper or computer?

This is a tricky one for me because I feel like I’m always fucking up the format on A03. I definitely use pen and paper when I need to get in the zone, but I type up quick ideas and use that for the final editing.  

x. Have you ever taken any writing classes?

We have a creative writing class at my college but all my older friends who had taken it told me not to, that the teacher was insane.  Otherwise, I don't think so.  

xi. What inspires you to write?

everything.  Nature, sometimes.  Stories my friends tell me, media posts.  And sometimes I just have an idea that grows into a spiraling vine of possibility

DUDE YES It was sooo good. I WANT LIKE 5 MORE with that kind of originality, and bravery!

It was so good.  So many people try to do these big commentary projects on scale with the world, but Bong Joon-ho took the world and made it small enough to fit on a train and it was so effective.

Spent this evening writing with @clairesalcedo. This is her last week before fall classes begin (she’s a professor) and we’re setting aside several days to write some short story drafts we can polish throughout the fall.

It’s like we’re late summer canning fiction, not fruit.
