This was not my first attempt at painting Light. I prepared a set of sketches last month, to let my Patreon members decide which should I do. The sketch they voted for was actually very different from this. It was more of an action pose, but I felt totally blocked with it and thus started over from scratch! In the end, I do love this piece now and have no regrets about the start over.

Lastly, I want to talk about Light.

If there’s one trope that gets to me more than found family, it’s the defrosting ice characters. Those who start out aloof, abrasive or uncaring, and gradually warm up to the people around them and open up. I love them. And Lightning? She is definitely that.

I really, really like Lightning. At the start, she was quite rough to others. She didn’t seem much bothered if Sazh died or not, and the safety of anyone else was secondary to her mission. After becoming a l’Cie, that personality trait only seemed to become more severe. I’ve heard that some people found her a dislikable character, or thought she was some Cloud clone for being brooding and antisocial and a solider. But I wonder….Did those peolpe really pay attention to her story? Or did they only see the start and judge from that?

I do think her character was very justified by her backstory. She lost her parents. She felt like she had to be strong for Serah. To be a tough big sister than she could rely on….Even if that meant she couldn’t be a warm big sister. She’s so compelling, when you think about it….Her whole life had become duty. To her job, to her sister. Doing what it took to survive and keep Serah safe. Most likely shelving her dreams so that Serah could keep hers. Is it any wonder that she became suicidal when she thought Serah was dead? Her sister was all she had. Without her, there wasn’t any purpose in her life.

It’s also just intriguing. What made the young Lightning think that she had to change her name to change herself? To feel so strongly that she wanted to not just modify, but erase her previous identity? She still has a lot left to be shown.

Her character development is very strong, I think. I absolutely loved seeing her slowly warming up to Hope. At first, she was so indifferent to him, if not outright irritated, but after their fight against Odin, she really started to take him under her wing. Their relationship is so cute! She’s like a protective big sister to him….Going from wanting him gone to protecting and guiding him the way she did was so heartwarming to see. Theirs interactions are many of my favourite parts of the entire game. And I really appreciated that it just felt like her; it didn’t feel like in a lot of Japanese media, where women are written to be maternal figures, as if that was just what she “should” be doing or something because she’s a woman. It felt like it was natural progression based on the story and her character. I loved how she went from not wanting him around, considering him a burden, to being willing to sacrifice herself just to give him time to run away.

I also really liked how she warmed up to Snow. I was very much with her on that; I really hated him at the start, too. Can’t blame her for not liking him, given his “hero” thing. But seeing her become kinder to him as she found out about the true nature of l’Cie crystalisation, and getting to see him finally bite to match his bark…I really liked that. Even more so as she grew to not just accept him, but depend on him, too.

Also, she’s just really fucking cool. I loved her from her very first scene. Look how she took all those guys apart! So damn cool. And she only got cooler from there. Most of the most stylish cutscenes in the game involve her significantly. The opening one, jumping out of a falling ship after Hope and Vanille, the return to Cocoon….She has so many cool sequences.

I hope she gets to be happy. Properly happy. Have a life of her own, not just duty. She has a new family now, not just Serah. And she should have a girlfriend in Fang, if only she wasn’t in crystal stasis!

She’s absolutely a fitting protagonist. I adore her. I’m very glad there’s more of her to come.
