Part 3 of DIABOLICAL YURI POSTING!!

In chapter 4/5 (don’t know yet haha), Emmy comes up with a plan to find out who the masked gentleman is! D.Y Emmy!!

She sets up a date for Hershel with the Masked Gentleman, thinking I’d be a good plan to find out who’s under the mask. Hershel tries her best to refuse this idea since she doesn’t like men that much but figured she’d give it a try. Emmy and Flora are on the balcony area looking down at the table where Hershel and The Masked Gentleman is sitting.

The Masked Gentleman Eventually reveals themselves to be a woman and the long lost lover of Hershel, Randall ascot. After some crying and hugging, Randall holds onto Hershel as she flys them up and into one of the hotel suites. Leaving Emmy to take care of Flora for the rest of the day. Emmy tries to tell the information to the police but they don’t believe her since she has no visible proof with her other than Herself and Flora. After this attempt fails, Emmy decides to take Flora to one of the local casinos. Knowing Hershel would get mad at her, she does this anyways to be “cool aunty Emmy” (Flora’s words, not Emmy’s).

Speaking of Flora though, HERE SHE IS!

In this au, Flora is Hershel’s adopted daughter! After the loss of Lady Dahlia and Baron Augustus, she felt obligated to take her under her roof. She’s 10 years old and hasn’t been enrolled in school for a while. After the events of Her game and Randall’s game, Hershel decides to enroll her in school!

Some Info Regarding Dahlia and Augustus;

Hershel knew Dahlia in her college days, they dated for a bit but split paths when Dahlia met Augustus and Hershel met Claire. Though they continued to be friends and kept in touch after college. Hershel would write funny little puzzles in letters she’d send to the Reinhold household. She got a final letter from Dahlia, talking about a trip she and Augustus were taking out to sea to look at rare stones in shrines and temples. After this letter she hadn’t heard from Dahlia or Augustus in a while till Emmy showed up and talked to Hershel about visiting them.

Dahlia and Augustus discovered the rare stones and wanted to bring them back to their home. Unfortunately, Targent came and ransacked and destroyed the boat they were on.

After arriving to the Reinhold household, Emmy is extremely surprised to see what looked like Dahlia and Augustus, Since she was the one who took out their ship.

Emmy info- She works for Descole, Targent, and Hershel! When she gets information from Hershel, she’ll tell that to either Descole or Leon. If she gets information from Descole, she’ll tell Leon. She doesn’t pass information to Hershel to not break the bond that she has with her and Flora. After Randall’s game, Emmy would do anything for Flora and to see her happy. She never really liked kids, having none of her own, but Flora changed that. She is very proud to be an aunt in Flora’s eyes.

This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.

GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.

WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.

WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.

WHAT ABOUT THE PUZZLE LADS/LASSES?: I only plan on including characters that we can speak to in-game, so no Puzzle Lads or Lasses. Sorry to the people who like them 😔

WHICH CHARACTERS ARE INCLUDED, THEN?: Anyone who isn't an exception listed above that is in the profiles of the game! A full list is enclosed below.

WHEN WILL THE TOURNAMENT START?: More information forthcoming on that! I have to seed the bracket first :)

WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.

WHAT CRITERIA SHOULD I VOTE ON?: Whatever makes you happy :)

ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.

US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.

Character Introduction: Claire Augustus (she/her), from Questionable Content

"Claire is introduced to the comic as 24-year-old graduate student in library sciences interning at the college library where one of the main characters Marten works. She eventually starts dating Marten and moves in with with him & his roommates. After graduating, she started working at the coffee shop that most of the cast hangs out at, while still trying to find a librarian job. In the currently ongoing storyline, she got a job opportunity to be head librarian at Cubetown, a research community created by AIs (the fictional actually sentient robot kind, not the real world ChatGPT kind) floating off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. She and Marten are planning on moving there for the job."

Helena's sorry has two main timelines and four different branches. Here's a little summary of each

Timeline 1:

She's severely mentally ill and lives with her parents. In the summer of 2021, she goes on a vacation to Spain with her little brother. While there, she meets Ione and goes to the hallway.

Branch 1:

While in the hallway, she gets lost and becomes a soldier in the warring world. Because of a curse on this world, she forgets who she is and is renamed to Finetty. After some years there, she becomes a commander and is "gifted" the phoenix curse so she never dies. After 131 years of living like this, a man named Angus is sent to assassinate her, but he falls in love with her. She remembers who she was and they elope, running away to a peaceful world. While there, they have a daughter named Rose. Angus dies while Rose is still a toddler so Helena has to raise her alone, but she has several friends who are all more than happy to help. This ending is bittersweet.

Branch 2:

Delilah brings Helena to Nova (the world that train and tragedy takes place in). Helena becomes close friends with Augustus because of her connection to Delilah and she becomes his right hand man. She helps him fight the monster infestation and she dies in her 60s after being wounded on the battle field. She lived an alright life but died with few friends and loved ones. Overall, she's not very happy in the Nova branch.

Timeline 2:

She's doing much better mentally and lives alone. In the summer 2021, she moves to Spain and gets a job as a pharmacist. While there, she becomes good friends with Augustus, Francisco and Claire.

Branch 1:

Helena, Augustus, Francisco and Claire are normal people living normal lives. Nothing remarkable happens and they're all fine. This is the nice, not sad timeline for all of them.

Branch 2:

Despite not being as easily susceptible to the hallway, Helena still gets stuck there. She ends up in the cruise world, where L1-H are exceedingly rare. Everyone wants to experiment on her and her lifespan is extended by thousands of years but that entire time is spent in labs. At the end, she escapes and runs off to RM-778 where she befriends Maya and Frederik. They know of Finetty (as in, the other timeline) and take care of her but she dies after only some days with them.

dude the misogyny in pl is so bad. like just off the top of my head there's like twice the amount of plot-relavent women/girls who are dead (sophia, claire (x2), melina, rachel, aurora, des's wife, des's daughter) to the plot-relavent men who are dead (augustus, duke herzen, evan barde) like. they really took the girls behind the shed and put them down to further the men's characters 😭😭😭

it really fucking sucks like. fandom is Not Immune to Misogyny either but at least the people I've encountered over here believe the female characters deserved better (at least Flora if no one else)

and there are a lot of different types of misogyny in the games too -- it isn't just the amount of female characters that are fridged (though I will say: Newton Belduke gets added to the count of male characters, and while both Mrs. Belduke and Mrs. Cantabella are dead, neither of them really fit the bill for fridging, since they're barely relevant beyond "this is how Eve and Espella exist", which is a Different misogynist trope but not fridging...) it's also:

the mishandling of Flora in DB and UF, who was shafted out of a character arc

characters like Espella and Aurora, which while prominent don't have much going for them in terms of characterization since they're more "mystery" than "character" -- you can read my essay about that here

and the fact that characters like them exist shows that PL knows they had issues with female characters and rather than actually Fixing The Problem they were like "oh! we'll just give female characters more screen time! this will fix everything!"

there's these two NPCs in Diabolical Box you interact with on the Molentary Express. they're named Steve and Mitzi. they're husband and wife. Steve has about double the amount of lines as Mitzi, despite the fact that you interact with both simultaneously. this was the example that made me want to graph the amount of lines female characters have versus the amount male characters had

why was Katrielle's game almost marketed as "Lady Layton" I know it's to give her a fancy title like Professor but like. Changing it to Layton's Mystery Journey was the right move imo, Lady Layton sounds like it's "puzzles: girl edition"

Diane Makepeace should have been the final villain of Mystery Room actually. She should have gotten to take in how completely wrong she was about Alfendi and watched her conceptions of the case crumble. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a redemption arc. She doesn't have to express remorse about killing those at least five other people. (And yes I acknowledge the racist tones of the whole "Mariana Etista" thing, these are not mutually exclusive)

this is localization specific but according to a couple friends of mine who are collaborating on a comparison between the EU-US-JP versions of Last Specter/Spectre's Call Emmy's character is very different in the US version, she speaks a lot more passively in the US version compared to the EU version which uh. Yikes

Katia's family history being mansplained by Layton since it's the "mystery" of DB

just like. they never acknowledge Hoogland's deal? like the women that were ""sacrificed to the dragonlord"" were running away from loveless marriages, sure, but why did those marriages exist to begin with? and now we (the protagonists) have taken away that escape route for women trapped in (probably) abusive relationships because the dragonlord was a lie and azran tech was causing the wind. sure we might have fixed the natural disasters but we sure didn't fix the other problems!

(I think the crossover does slightly better here by not portraying becoming a Shade as an escape for women but as kind of an empty existence, but witch burnings are always gonna be a little :/)

the general lack of female antagonists. Darklaw and Diane go a good ways towards filling that but Diane dying is :/ and while I'm fine with Darklaw being not the "final boss" because she’s also an Ace Attorney Prosecutor they just don't like girlbosses. women can be evil too

Marina Triton deserved better than what she got she is actually kind of a BAMF (going undercover in a cult that kidnapped her for years, hello??) but the ONLY reason she couldn't rescue Luke and Layton earlier was because Katrielle needed to be there in a Doyalist sense, which makes Marina knowing how to get them out of the cryochambers even weirder because if she KNEW why couldn't she have freed them EARLIER

Angela and Flora (in DB) being replaced by a male villain for a lot of their screentime (Angela was replaced by Descole after the first present-day conversation, so in all subsequent present-day scenes she’s Not There. Despite Flora being replaced by Don Paolo fairly early on in DB she actually speaks the third-most lines out of the female characters in that game...and I took out all the DP lines for that count)

but yeah the fridging is a problem, even one that persists into LMJ -- a major part of Ernest/Miles's motivations are that his mother died 🙃

domina 2.04 thoughts

- verdict: i would say this is the weakest of the four eps we’ve seen so far but it’s still quite good and even though the pace was a bit slower than the last, it’s setting up some HUGE plot points for the future. it also gives us a chance to catch our breath and assess whats to come since this is the halfway mark of the season!

- this show does such a good job of portraying tiberius and drusus’ relationship and the  “it’s up to us now brother” line really got me, especially knowing that next season, it’ll only be tiberius left :// - speaking of sibling relationships, glad we got another augustus and octavia scene and the little forehead touch between them is a nice callback to season one! - the triumvirate convo was such a jump scare like iullus babe let’s not even go there - before we knew what was to come in the rest of the episode, the julia and agrippa scene after the birth of lucius was so precious. the way he was talking to the kids had me !! - also i think he’s talking to julia the younger bc agrippina isn’t born yet but there’s some foreshadowing there for agrippina and germanicus as he floats the idea of marrying a daughter to one of drusus’ sons - i love claire forlani and she really brought it this ep, especially in the last half of the ep where octavia has to consider talking to livia - i love ben jo batt as agrippa and i think his performance this episode was by far the best. we see him go through the grief, rage and confusion that accompanies infidelity and it’s painful to see because it seems as though he had affection for julia and loved his children and suddenly he’s having to question the paternity of these children who’s futures he was already planning - i loved seeing antonina come into her own and act as a sort of mediator, livia would be proud!! - octavia’s love for iullus making her finally speak to Livia for more than 30 seconds was so poignant and their reunion at the end of the ep was <3 which makes me fearful for what i suspect is coming by the end of the season since clearly marcella and domitius - piso is so real - i feel bad that they’ve made marcella a villain tbh - Agrippa sitting all forlorn crushed me <3 - GAIUS AND LIVIA REUNION, it was so simple but so powerful - did anyone else catch that teeny tiny (and only) moment between drusus and antonia at the dinner party?? - livia showing up to dinner parties after her exiles/absence in both s1 and s2 is such an iconic consistency I love it - octavia toasting to livia, we love to see it

my predictions for next week: obviously, livia is going to have to grapple with the fact that agrippa’s sons are now at the head of the succession line and i think this is going to be an emotionally rich episode for her because up until now, she’s never been at odds with agrippa and clearly she loves and respects him but obviously the possibility of his sons inheriting instead of her sons would mean that all her plans would come to nothing. it’s going to be a difficult situation for her because nudging gaius and lucius out of the succession will put her at odds with one of her staunchest allies and closest friends but her choices are limited. i’m curious to see how much this ep jumps forward in terms of time. i’m hoping we’ll get to see more drusus/antonia next week as well! also im mildly concerned that they’re gonna have vilbia’s agrippa’s friend/brother/other relative (?) get revenge on agrippa and i don’t want my dude to die this season at all but when he does, i want it to be a natural death, not murder or smth for the sake of shock value. let my dude go in peace
