Do You See 2000 IDM / Electro

Alright, back on some electronic shit for today. Here we have a 12-inch sampler from a little, short-lived label out of the UK called deFocus, which was run by Clair Poulton, a woman who first cut her teeth at Aphex Twin's own Rephlex label before launching a label of her own called Clear; and then after Clear closed up shop, she started up this one.

Do You See represents the first of two 12-inch releases that showcased the type of music that deFocus' roster was cooking up at the time at the turn of the millennium, which happened to be mostly different shades of IDM. Some of it was fused with an old school electro vibe too though, like "Touched," which was by a group called Aphelion, and "Mystery One," which was by Mystery, whose own identity (or identities) appears to've indeed been a mystery! Both of these tracks come with pretty standard electro backbeats, but their respective vibes seem to be diametrically opposed to one another—"Touched" has a chemically icy whimsiness to it and "Mystery One" seems to be more interested in plumbing the depths of hell 👹. (And for more Aphelion, you can also check them out as Replicant on the breathtakingly chill, 10-plus-minute beaut' from 1996 that is "Analiz.")

But while those are certainly both two pretty sweet tunes, I don't think that they really hold a candle to another type of IDM that's on here: the more emotive kind that likes to surround all those pecky and glinty, rhythmic IDM bits with captivatingly fluffy clouds of melody and lush synth pads. Plus One's "Mayday," which was written by Plus One himself, but actually produced by the one and only legendary IDM duo of Plaid, is one such example, as it first supplies old and dramatic, cinematic string work, but progressively floods the remainder of its track with a beautiful blend of electronic, intertwining synths that sound significantly much more sci-fi-modern. You think that this song's hitting its creative peak at about a third of the way through when it adds its first new synth to pair with all these strings, but it actually has multiple more levels to ascend through, which is definitely gratifying, but doesn't even seem all that necessary, given that it's already achieved its status as a chief highlight of this record once that first new synth is poured in in the earlier going! 😌

And then for a song that appears to mix some of the electro vibe with that lush and lovely synth work, we have the pretty sublime "Commuter Love" by CiM to close us out. It's not nearly long enough, but in a similar way to Mystery's "Mystery One," it too has a bit of a sinister underlying synth to it, but in this song's case, the light of the trancey twinkling stabs that arrive soon afterwards seem to do a lot to neutralize much of that darkness.

So every track's a highlight on this one as deFocus puts forth an IDM statement here that looks back on the past with a deliberate eye on elements of electro, but seems to have its other eye trained on the future too. And when you have a pair of eyes that appear to be looking in completely opposite directions from one another, then I guess what you can say is that their combined eyesight is definitely, well...deFocused (<_>).

Two You See? 2000 IDM / Leftfield / Alternative Hip Hop

Alright, back on some electronic shit. Here we have a 12-inch sampler from a little, short-lived label out of the UK called deFocus, which was run by Clair Poulton, a woman who first cut her teeth at Aphex Twin's own Rephlex label before launching a label of her own called Clear; and then after Clear closed up shop, she started up this one.

So Two You See is a five-song showcase of the talent that deFocus was breeding at the time at the turn of the millennium. It's short, but it's largely centered around a very good strain of IDM—one that stresses melody through chiptune-y synth work and incorporates hints of electro too. But its first track, John Tejada's operatic "Genetical Love," is actually a pretty uniquely low-key alternative hip hop one that features rapping from abstract MC Divine Styler, and ultimately it shows that Clair Poulton's vision for this label definitely stretched beyond IDM; and perhaps that's why deFocus was called what it was in the first place 🤔.

But the IDM is where this record really happens to shine regardless, with three separate gems taking up its b-side. Adelaide, Australia's Tim Koch kills it on "Blat," a song that pairs some intertwined videogame melodies—one of which is emotively rubber-thick and reminiscent of subterranean trenches from Super Mario World—with a rhythmic bed that consists of a whole lot of handclaps; then London's Plus One comes through with "Sticker," a happy-go-lucky stroll through a rainbow-colored meadow that was written by him and produced by legendary IDM duo Plaid (who are themselves alums of Clear); and last, but certainly not least, is maybe deFocus' most coveted crown jewel of all, CiM. CiM's time spent on this release is entirely too short, but here he delivers "Ceramic," a sublime song with all sorts of rhythmically mechanical glitchiness laid over some supremely mellow pads 😌. This is a tune that causes you to feel the new, forward-looking frontier that was opening up for this kind of 'intelligent' electronic music back then, during a time when peoples' pie-in-the-sky prognostications for an internet-led future were so naïvely rosy in retrospect 😅. The previous two tunes on this comp that precede "Ceramic" are certainly quite good themselves, but this one in particular is really just on a whole different plane. CiM wasn't the only artist crafting this kind of stuff at the time, but for a label that, for the most part, appeared to be kicking around with an enjoyable retro kind of vibe, this guy seemed to be providing something of a counterbalance with this excellent song of his.

It's All Becoming… 1996 IDM / Leftfield / Electro

A couple days ago I wrote about a little 12-inch comp called Two You See? that was put out by a small and short-lived UK label by the name of deFocus, which was founded in the early aughts by a woman named Clair Poulton. Poulton first cut her teeth at Aphex Twin's own Rephlex label before launching a couple labels of her own, and the one she founded before deFocus was called Clear.

So here's Clear's first ever sampler, It's All Becoming…, which was released in 1996 and showcased some of the talent that had graced this quirky label throughout its first two years, including heavy hitters like IDM duo Plaid and the nebulous Autechre side project of Gescom.

Now, compared to the tracks that I gushed over from that Two You See? record earlier this week, I don't think that anything on this CD is quite as good. Part of that can probably be chalked up to the fact that this came out about four years prior and IDM had made a bunch of progress within that time, but I've also heard IDM releases that predate this one that sound better than this too. So while time plays a factor, I don't think it's a total excuse here.

But with all of that said, though, this is still *definitely* a quality sampler. It may not have that soul-piercingly emotive synth work that I crave or super complex rhythms to fill up each track, but the music is still nonetheless pretty creative, intriguing, and good.

And outside of the tail-end of an unreleased mix of Plaid's "Angry Dolphin"—the only true exclusive that appeared on this comp at the time—the stuff that strikes most is by a duo called the Gregory Fleckner Quintet, who first appeared as Ono on a split-12-inch release on Rephlex back in '93, before assuming this extraordinarily unique role as an act that makes leftfield electronic music, but with a deliberately vintage jazz band aesthetic. And they are certainly not a one-trick pony, either; GFQ get four songs on here to show what they're all about, and while each one deploys clear jazz themes—save for an excellently dense remix by Plaid—none of them sound remotely similar to one another. "EDP Blues" is on this extensively spacious and sort of crime noir/beatnik tip, "Hold Me Close" sports crisp 'rat-a-tat' hi-hats, and "Oi, That's My Bird" ventures into swing territory. All in all, a very cool concept brought to satisfyingly abstract fruition each time.

So, I really don't think much of this comp will totally bend your mind like a lot of great IDM releases have a way of doing, but if you want something that's mostly chill, a little thought-provoking, and pretty unlike much else, a whole lot of this thing is worth an attentive listen.

Very clear sound throughout.

After concluding a successful road tour, Richard Kiley brought the company of Man of La Mancha into New York City, opening at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center on 22 JUN 1972, and running until 21 OCT 1972. This video was shot of that engagement, using a single tripod mounted camera and sound board sound. While the exact date of the filming is not known, it is believd it to be from 22 JUN 1972. It is known that Irving Jacobson was out sick for the first two performances, and that his understudy, Edmond Verrato, went on for him on 22 and 23 JUN.
