X-Files Collector's Edition: Scully's Arcadian Birthday

Arcadia takes place around Scully's birthday-- so how, exactly, did that unfold? These fics cover different takes on that birthday: some celebrated before the case, others talked about on the case, and still others that weren't acknowledged at all.

He hesitated. He said, “Like me.” Hedging his bets.

The look on Scully’s face was thoughtful, nothing else. He waited her out as she thought that one over. Or, he thought that’s what she thought over, until she said, looking at him, “I’m not so sure the Schroeders fit either.""

Mulder is nervous about being fake married, confessing to his gf Scully over her birthday dinner. She contemplates his thoughts on truth, reality, and projection; giving him great banter and insight throughout their stay.

Mulder's mother is happy to have a little "oops" Valentine's Dinner with him; but she gently pushes him to center his focus on Scully. He considers this while celebrating at Scully's birthday dinner.

He would make it up to her eventually, but San Diego just didn't seem like the right time or place for a celebration.

Maybe she just didn't want to be seen in public with him, and if he were honest with himself, he could hardly blame her. It wasn't that long ago he was playing kissy-face with Diana. And although he and Scully had pretty much gotten past all that, the thought of any kind of display of affection, whether simulated or genuine might be more than Scully was ready for. ""

Mulder wonders why Scully has been distant the whole case. In a late-night confession, she opens up about post Monday nightmares, earning his respect for her courage (and thanks that she hadn't despised him for not bringing up her birthday.)

 Mulder and Scully are pushing the boundaries of their relationship; but can't quite iron out their ability to communicate their wants and needs from each other in the wake of One Son... especially because both don't know what those are.

Mulder spends each night in Arcadia slowly lowering Scully's walls, revealing more about himself and learning more about her.

Mulder takes Scully to Sea World after the case as a post-birthday celebration. His consideration allows her to relax slowly back into their yin-yang dynamic.

She moves around so he’s staring back at her, forcing him to make eye contact. “You’re not the target, Mulder. You never have been. Not with me.”

“Maybe I wanna be the target,” he mutters. “Maybe I should be.""

Mulder reflects on his behavior after the case, spurred on by a visit to a random smalltown church. He finds Scully and apologizes for stomping over her feelings. Scully assures him he was never a target.

Scully and Mulder work through their S6 relationship, which includes a pit stop in Arcadia.

Mulder is hamming up the suffering saint act to his gf Scully; but he sobers when they run into the still-interested detective from Emily's case. Scully is shocked he gives her leeway; and her loyalty and love shock and awe him.

This isn’t HOTD related but I was rewatching Bridgerton specifically Bridgerton season 2 and god was I pissed. If I was a Kathony fan coming from the book(s) (I didn’t read the books till after Queen Charlotte) I would’ve been pissed. I swear Anthony treats Kate like his mistress (which is bad enough) while he’s courting/engaged to her sister. Telling her in so many words “you’re good enough to f*ck but not to marry.” And Kate while I felt for her I was pissed at her too. There were so many times no matter how embarrassing she should’ve told Edwina the whole truth. Lying by omission is still lying. The road to h*ll was truly paved with good intentions for Kate. As for Edwina herself isn’t she like 17/18 to Anthony’s 30? And if Anthony was truly only obsessed with duty why didn’t he just move on? I truly felt for Edwina. The only thing she did that really pissed me of was the “you are my half sister Kate.” Mostly cause I myself am a half sister and I know this would destroy me if my sister said this to me but at the same time she was hurt and when people get hurt they lash out and want to hurt those who hurt them. Like I’d straight dog walk my sister if she married my ex-fiancé. All in all I was pissed watching the season and I’m still pissed thinking about it.

Rewatching s2 is on my go do list before the new season comes out, I haven’t even read that novel yet, but yeah they drove the Edwina doesn’t know thing for way longer than nesscary. And as much as I love Bridgerton it makes zero sense because why would anyone do that.

I’m not going to bash Kate for it, but why the hell would you not tell your sister you are in love with her fiancé and he has the hots for you. Even if she went back to India and only visited them on Hollidays/birthdays that’s a recipe for disaster. I have a little sister too, I would never ever do that to her.

Show Anthony is a hoe so I could see him justifying not moving on when he should’ve by saying Well I’m going to cheat anyway, Edwina is good enough🤦🏽‍♀️

thinking about how Dean considers that there's something inherently sexual about Doc Holliday's mustache (from Tombstone, specifically), and he just assumes everyone falls prey to it, so no he's not bisexual, that's just Doc Holliday's mustache, what do you mean it's not a sex symbol

Gods, where do I even start with Ash? They were once a former Raider who resorted to cannibalism quite a lot in their day before the Legion wiped out their Raider camp. They were able to hide and survive the attack, though they didn’t leave without severe burn marks to their back that they would later get a tattoo around to resemble a phoenix. They even chose to call themself Ash because they quite literally rose from ashes when the attack was over. They spent the next few years trying to clean their act up, start anew, and put their raider life in the past, their only equipment being a new set of clothes and a kitchen knife they were able to scavenge. They landed themself a job with the Mojave Express and were pretty content with delivering mail, though they knew that no matter what they did, a lot of what they did as a raider would still come back to haunt them and all they wanted was a way to forget.

Cue the beginning of New Vegas where they finally get that wish after being shot in the head by Benny. For a while, Ash remains put in Goodsprings to recover and only sets out when they feel ready, hoping to find some answers as to who they are. At some point on their journey, when some of their memories are regained, they partner up with a traveling New Canaanite who calls himself Doc Holliday, a gunslinger who takes pride in his gunmanship and medical skills, who was also a survivor like Ash when New Canaan was attacked. He’s not a hardcore believer like Joshua and Daniel are, but he’s still a religious man. When Ash recognizes Doc as a New Canaanite, they’re rightfully scared because they’re afraid that if he finds out about their raider past, he’ll turn on them, so they try to distant themself in hopes that they’ll just split when they reach New Vegas, though to their surprise, they find themself growing closer to Doc, admiring him as a father.

Their adventure through the DLCs is kinda mixed ‘cause I never really figured out what it would’ve been like for them, but by the time Lonesome Road hits, they start hallucinating a lot of their past self taunting them and insisting that they just give in to their old habits. Throughout the journey, they’re questioning themself even more on who they are and by the end of it, they finally figure out who they are and they return to the Mojave with the title of Phoenix, their new duster adorned with a fiery bird on the back roughly similar to the one etched into their skin.

They also end up holding hands with Ulysses because I just think it’d be real neat of them to do so.

Fave food: Most of it. I’m into almost all of the traditional weird dishes too. As long as it’s well made. Luckily my country has great food cooked in a million different ways. And we do take pride in it. My grandma’s Arroz de Cabidela is my favorite, which is a traditional rooster risotto cooked with it’s own blood (sounds terrible, tastes wonderfully).

Play any instruments: Piano. Classical. Not good at it though. Hair colour: Brunette. Languages you speak: Fluent: English, Portuguese. I get by (can communicate and write, but not correctly, natives will be horrified but will understand me) : Spanish, French. Read and Understand well without Subs: Spanish, French, Italian. Understand a little bit depending on context in entertainment (an expression or word here and there or the general theme of it but not most of it): German, Dutch (way less than german), Japanese, Korean, Chinese (this one the least). Most iconic song: Show must go on, Bohemian Rhapsody (cliche, I know, but it is what it is). Random fact: I picture AU endings for stuff I’m watching as a sleeping mechanism.  Describe yourself as aesthetic things: a storm in a cup, at the bottom of the ocean, near a lava stream.

Tess Holliday’s Body Positivity Advice Betches

Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by your mirror, front-facing camera, or the reflection of yourself in a glass of wine *entire population slowly raises their hands*. As much as you try, it’s difficult to love yourself all the time. Especially when you realize that you downed an entire box of pizza, eight tequila shots, and a small village last night, and now you feel like sh*t. Instagram makes it kind of hard to love yourself sometimes, what with all the models on your feed who make beauty look so effortless (not to mention, the trolls who might comment on your pics if you dare go a day without wearing makeup). That’s why we brought plus-size model Tess Holliday on our Diet Starts Tomorrow podcast to get real with us about body positivity and confidence.

For those of you who don’t know, Tess is a super important figure within the plus-size modeling and body positivity communities. She’s the creator of the viral hashtag #effyourbeautystandards, a movement that called out unrealistic beauty standards. She also became the largest plus-size model of her size and height to get signed to a mainstream agency when she signed with Milk Management in 2014. On social media, Tess is known for her fearless, take-no-bullsh*t attitude. If you troll her, she will clap back with facts. All in all, Tess is a boss-ass woman.

It can be really hard to love the way you look when the only people that ever come across your Instagram feed are stick-thin models in crop tops pretending to eat chicken nuggets. You might think you look super hot—until your post is right below Alexis Ren’s bikini pics. The problem is, you’re never going to feel good about yourself if you can’t see other people who look like you, and are actually killing the Insta game, looking flawless as anything.

That’s why Holliday created her own Instagram campaign in 2013 called “Eff Your Beauty Standards”. It started as a hashtag for people to share photos of themselves in an outfit that scares or makes them feel beautiful. Now, it’s evolved into a community that supports your everyday gal just trying to take a cute selfie. Holliday explains; “there are a ton of people around the world no matter their race or gender—that feel sh*t about themselves too, so let’s talk about it.”

Don’t Let Brands Trick You Into Thinking They’re Inclusive

It’s like, super trendy right now to be body positive, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s doing it properly. Holliday explains, “companies like Flat Tummy Tea have stuff that’s like ‘love yourself babe’ but they’re really saying ‘you’re disgusting, babe’.” If you think drinking colon clearing, sh*t-inducing tea is how you show your body “love”, you’re out of your f*cking mind. Holliday says, “they’re literally trying to capitalize on the fact that people feel horrible about themselves,” and she’s right.

There are so many brands that hide behind so-called body positivity when in reality, they’re still trying to sell you something by capitalizing on your insecurities. And they sell products that at best, won’t do anything for you and, at worst, could be harmful. Holliday suggests looking for brands that follow through with their promise. Brands who cop out at a size 12 and say they’re inclusive literally don’t account for 68% of American women who are size 14 and above to wear their clothes.

You can’t feel like Beyoncé every day unless you are Beyoncé (and even she has off days). So, it’s okay to wake up and feel more potato than human. Holliday notes, “sometimes I feel like I look like a hot turd and I’m just polishing [myself].” Major mood. It may look like body positive Instagrammers like Holliday have their sh*t together, but in reality, they struggle a lot too. Being transparent on social media is something Holliday prides herself in. She shares moments of success, but also shares the moments where she needs to remind herself she’s worthy and beautiful.

So, cut yourself some slack. Even when you’re at your worst, you can find something you love about yourself. It could be your eyes, your intelligence, or your ability to put your entire fist in your mouth. For Holliday, it was working to reclaim the word fat and acknowledge that while she may see herself as fat, she’s so much more than that.

For a man as smart as he is, Mulder can be incredibly dense.

"I don't mind the fake blood," she says, smearing more of it all over his face, finding herself unable to keep herself from smiling any longer, "I mind the possibility of you being dead. You will pay for this." Her words lose steam when she accentuates them with yet another sob.""

Post Revival Scully finds Mulder covered in blood on the floor of their basement. After pulling his tie and sobbing all over him, Mulder pops up-- unharmed. He has to calm down Scully, who plans for revenge.

Scully whipped her head around to look at the woman who was currently scanning a case of Yoo-hoo. "No, I don't think she does," Scully whispered while she placed the last of her groceries on the belt and began to dig out her coupons.

"Scully look again, she's even chewing her gum in the same manor as Eve did, when she showed us how she bit that poor guards eye ball."

Mulder suspects their checkout clerk is an Eve. He leaves Scully in the car to double back and subtly interrogate her; but the only thing strange about this woman is that she's related to Skinner.

How I broke my own heart - Episode 1

The first part of this story leads us to my time in the hell that we call school. I have never been one of the cool kids and I probably will never be one of those. You have to imagine me as a strange little girl with an obsession for cats and books, barely any friends.

The school I was in was about the level of junior high or secondary school. It was usual that you have to decide in 6th grade, what main profession you want to attend to from 7th to 10th grade so that meant you would be in a whole new class from 7th grade on. And that is where all of this kind of went down.

I was about 13 years old when this new class situation started and still a weirdo who was into cats and books. Fortunately, I knew a few people from past classes who were also being transferred into the new class that I ended up in. Those three people were my only real friends from that year on.

Our class was the most hated one among our year, mostly because we were basically fighting every week. It was a very cliché situation: There were the popular kids, the cool but weird and artsy kids and the outsiders. Of course, I was an outsider. Most of the time, the cool kids just ignored us and that was okay with me. Really, not getting any attention is better than being bullied. Unless you fall for one of the cool kids.

The innocent, shy and naive little 13 year old me of course fell for the cute redhead who was one of the “leaders” of the cool kids’ group. I used to stare at him in class, daydream about us being a cute couple and it became pretty obvious, that I liked him but I never said a word about it. One day, one of the cool kids asked me wether my “obsession” was real or not. I did not want to lie and trusted the girl, which was a big mistake. Of course, she went and told everybody in class, as soon as she knew.

At first, I did not notice anything. I didn’t notice the giggling that went on when I walked past the guy I liked, I did not see the red flags that were waving all over the classroom. The guy’s best friend used to sarcastically call us a cute couple or tell me that my boyfriend awaited me and that was when I started to realize, they were mocking me since the beginning. They were making fun of me even though I never had the courage to tell this guy my feelings. I was only 13 and already shy but this made it even worse.

I started to avoid the cool kids and stick to my three friends but that was not helping with the heartbreak. The guy I used to have a crush on made it pretty clear that he did not want anything to do with me. He didn’t give me a chance and I blamed it on myself. Because I was the weird kid with the obsession for cats and books and nobody cared about wether there was something hidden behind it.

After the summer hollidays and at the beginning of 8th grade the mocking and giggling went on but I had already started to ignore it. It was just some background noise that was added to the inner voice that told me, I didn’t deserve him anyway. He was one of the cool kids, he would never go out with a weirdo like me.

When I look back at this today, I would really like to tell all of them to f*ck off. The people who were mocking me when I was 13 were a main cause for my self-esteem to become low and also my confidence. Dear Fabian, thank you for nothing. You told me that the weird girl will never end up with the cool guy just like in the movies, even though you never gave me a chance.
