I just rewatched the very first CK episode and what a delight it still is. I was a little worried that the first season seemed good only in comparison with the latest one but no. At least the pilot is actually pretty awesome. I only watched tKK for the first time because I wanted to check out CK. And I was surprised at how fast the series turned Johnny into a sympathetic character. He was so scary in the movie. Also not only the writing used to be more realistic but the way the series was shot too. Johnny’s apartment wasn’t lit like a sitcom. The lighting in general was moodier. Not that I don't like the season 4 AV epic lighting but the show used to feel more personal with less budget. Plus there were lots of hand-held camera shots. Johnny’s socio-economic situation was part of his character and not just a decoration. Everything was pretty small scale story wise too and it worked so well. There’s this cool contrast between Johnny’s more realistically portrayed everyday life and how Daniel is at first shown only on the billboard and in the commercials. Even though Daniel’s behaviour is mostly nice and friendly in the episode it gives the audience a nudge towards the underdog. Daniel in general seems to be quite genuine about being over their rivalry at this point. I didn’t remember that his animosity was in fact mostly towards Cobra Kai and not Johnny specifically. Which is funny considering how the series is seemingly going to end. So it is a really well made episode. The writing is good and it has a look of a very personal, character driven drama with comedic elements. I know the show will eventually lean more into comedy and action but I like these less stakes dramatic elements a lot.

Since Cobra Kai season 6 is on its way, I've decided to rewatch it and can we PLEASE talk about this

First off: Why leopard print? It's hideous

Secondly: The hair? What are you? 35?

Lastly: Putting Tory in this dress makes her look like Robby's mother! It's like Robby couldn't get a date to prom so he asked his mother to go with him!

I also hate their relationship. It was so unnecessary and forced. It only happened because of Sam & Miguel.

I was so happy that they broke up in season 5.

Better as friends than lovers.

Also can we have no relationships please? Just have Miguel, Sam, Robby & Tory all be friends? Please Netflix?

And maybe a Moon, Eli, Dimitri & Yasmine poly

No relationship drama. No "Is Sam & Miguel together or Robby & Tory?" "Robby & Sam again?" "Miguel and Tory?" Just have them be friends!

I'm seeing a lot of discourse on the Daemyra divorce scene and some are arguing that Rhaenyra was terrified and she flinched when Daemon raised his hand, but I've rewatched the scene over and over, for research purposes, and Rhaenyra wasn't petrified, she was PISSED (and very turned on considering her eyes literally drop to his lips right after but some of y'all are blind I guess). And she didn't flinch, she SNARLED. It was very much "try me bitch, i'm not playing with you today", which is why Daemon pulls back his hand so quickly. Mans had to consider his next move very carefully lol

ck rewatch 1x04

This is the episode that got me on board with CK fully. The show was great before but the conflicts introduced here are still the most compelling to me. The Halloween party was the point of a big falling out between Daniel&Sam and Johnny&Miguel. And now we add Robby to the mix.

I’ve forgotten that he was introduced as such a bad boy but I always remember his very sad family situation. I am probably in the minority here but the creators writing Johnny to be one truly bad father is what made him feel more real and fascinating for me. And this episode shows Johnny’s complete ineptness as a father. The show’s not pulling any punches in portraying how neglectful both Robby’s parents are. Yet. I know they will underplay the effects of Johnny’s absence later but not in this season.

The scene when Johnny comes to apologize and it turns out that it's an apology to Carmen and not Shannon is when I was sold on the show. Johnny makes a choice in that scene. He takes responsibility for Miguel, he chooses not to give up, to keep trying. And this choice will have massive consequences.

This is one pretty complicated situation Johnny decides to put himself into whether he realises this or not. And I really enjoyed it.

What I wasn’t expecting is that the resolution to this whole mess would be to almost entirely ignore it. Especially in such supposedly wholesome family friendly show like CK.

But back then it looked so very promising. I always enjoy characters that are good with some people while at the same time are terrible with others. Johnny in this episode makes a decision to be there for Miguel always and yet continues to ignore Robby. And it’s as messed-up as it’s interesting to me.
