2023 Retrospective: Artist of the Year

There is only one Honourable Mention. I thought for a long time and couldn’t find more artists, I would give it too. I'm very sorry.

Jeff Satur (Steal the Show, Dum Dum, Lucid, Black Tie)

I’m one of the few people, who knew Jeff before he starred in KinnPorsche, but damn, did his career take off afterwards. And boy, has he earned it. All of his singles this year were great and the very unexpected K-Pop collaboration his year started with, not only pulled him out of his comfort zone, but also set the tone for the rest of the year. His vocals stand out in the song, to the point that I often forget, that he’s just a feature, not the main star. You could say, he really did Steal the Show. I really would love to see him collaborate with more K-Pop artists, though I’m scared that K-Pop fans will be weird about their faves collaborating with a BL actor. As for his own songs, Dum Dum and Black Tie have quickly become my favourite songs of him and I can’t quite decide which one I prefer. Probably Black Tie, but it’s a close call. Lucid is fine, but I do adore the music video. Aside from the scene, where the girl decides to cut his hair. It looks amazing. Girl don’t do that.

Honourable Mention:

Jaejoong (Glamorous Sky)

He might not have released much new music, aside from a new Love Covers album (including an official version of Glamorous Sky, finally!), but this mention is purely for what he achieved this year. He finally escaped CJeS entertainment, started his own label and even managed to get SM to acknowledge it. Then, he was able to make an appearance on a major broadcasting network after being blacklisted for 14 years and also won two Asian Artist Awards. He really has been on a roll and I’m very happy for him. JaeFriends has also become one of my favourite variety shows, not only because of the food, but also because Jaejoong is a great entertainer and listener. I really hope he gets some artists from SM on it this year.

why would any company make a deal with dispatch you ask? Mmm well dispatch stalks all kinds of celebrities and influential people, i am sure some top execs at sm entertainment might be interested to know about the dealings or whereabouts of certain people in the industry or elsewhere. The ownership of sm and such massive companies is very complex and there are many things to consider besides one particular idol or group’s career… so maybe it was a quid pro quo where sm offered a valuable public asset (karina) to get sth in return (whether it was info or some other favor). Or maybe dispatch was just the mere distributor of the information and the deal only involved cjes and sm… maybe they wanted to cover sth up, distract with the dating lives of a young popular idol, idk, it’s really not bc i wanna believe jmj are real and thus jm couldn’t be dating someone else, it’s that even if you remove mj completely from the equation, the whole thing seems fake and companies can have many reasons to lie about stuff (like governments do too and with much more serious matters). I also agree with the point another anon made in nat’s cc this morning, sm could have used this opportunity to crush jm’s sudden rising star, i know most companies dont want their idols to get too big so it’s not like they would hesitate to throw a scandal their way, not big enough that it destroys their careers but sufficient enough that it brings them down a notch. The timing of it too, in terms of how far into her career jm is reminds me of when Jennie and kai were revealed to be dating, and whether idk if that was true or not, it also involved quite a controversy and i know yg was definitely interested in stopping Jennie from getting too big, like all of blackpink actually, which they failed to accomplish eventually.

anyways you dont have to agree necessarily but i see a thousand reasons for sm to agree to the fake news or engineer them (their whiplash cb also conveniently pushed back from the beginning of the year), and many of them escape our purview, as sm and the people making the shots there have their hands in many different cookie jars beyond kpop groups 😕

many good points that make a lot of sense! thanks for explaining them to me. i guess my disbelief just stems from the fact that i simply cannot imagine that legitimate companies can actually operate this way. lol and trust me, i have experience in business management

it's just such an unfortunate reality that what jm experienced is a very true occupational hazard in her industry. yes, a company would never want its artist to grow bigger than it, but it's just so surreal in bad way how this is the case. it's the south korean entertainment industry where there is so much competition and any sliver of popularity is important, and not to want your artist to be a star just seems so counterintuitive. again, i get it, but it's a shame. i suppose there are really so many under-the-table dealings that we will never be fully privy to. just so sad that jm had to suffer so much for it, if a quid pro quo or cover up of some sort really was the case

Do you think aespa appearing in the movie The Midnight Studio and NN singing the soundtrack for that movie has anything to do with SM's collaboration with C-jes? (Because the movie The Midnight Studio is produced by Slingshot Studio in collaboration with C-JeS Studios) 🤨

omg now that you mentioned it the timing of that is so close to #that thing... someone in the past once said sm and cjes cant be in good terms to make a deal bcs of jyj but jaejoong himself said he is in good terms with current sm management.. since its a big entertainment company it can just be a coincidence too so idk!
