Vivid Sydney: Ephemeral Oceanic. Bubbles! Bubbles! Everywhere! Step onto a floating boardwalk that weaves between 150 larger-than-life illuminated spheres and experience the pure joy of effervescence. It's as if Walsh Bay has been transformed into a giant bubble bath. This playful work appeals to our sense of childlike wonder through the ethereal quality of bubbles. Lit from within, the iridescent orbs change colour throughout the night. Choreographed to a unique soundscape, they illuminate the surface of the water creating an unmissable dance of light. By day, the spectacle continues. Each bubble is made from a transparent material with a colour-reflecting dichroic film that reacts to the changing light of the sun as it moves across the sky, causing a rainbow of reflection on the water and a unique picture from every angle. By making the concept of ephemerality visible, the artists encourage everyone – old and young – to consider the world around them as a space of transience and fragility. Vivid Sydney 2019 :: Lighting of the Sails. . . Huang’s Austral Flora Ballet is a hypnotic fusion of contemporary dance and motion-capture technology that brings our botanic wonders to life as never seen before. Together with choreographer Toogie Barcelo and the animation design team at Bemo in Los Angeles, Huang crafts a lush spectacle from such beloved floral gems as the New South Wales waratah, kangaroo paws and red beard orchids, all of which have enormous connection for First Nations peoples to their country, story and dance. Australia’s unique native plant species have inspired the animated shapes, colour palette and textures in this magnificent otherworldly opus. Huang and Barcelo worked with dancer Genna Moroni to generate fluid arabesques in direct response to the sensuous arcs and rhythms of the Sydney Opera House Sails. Produced by dancing on a motion capture stage in front of projected images of the building, Barcelo’s choreography physically embodies the world-recognised silhouette. The result is a ‘ballet’ of dazzling floral avatars that bloom with human movement across the Sails of Sydney Opera House. The Liminal Hour transforms Barangaroo’s Wulugul Walk into a magical bushland every night of the festival led by the beautiful female creature named Marri Dyin – meaning “Great Woman” in the Eora language. Marri Dyin calls upon the natural forces, transforming peaceful bushland, into a raging bush fire, then a torrential storm - a cycle of regeneration which assures new life and prosperity for future generations. While the storm calms, Marri Dyin then sits to share a moment with children. Marri Dyin is not a traditional spirit, rather she is a contemporary concept. Her existence seeks to recognise the influence and importance of the First Nations women, including Barangaroo, who lived in Sydney prior to settlement. Felt safe during Vivid Sydney as barricades were placed at least three blocks away from festivities, and they had lots of police officers on stand-by.
