On October 30th 1959 Jim Mollison, died.

Born in Glasgow in 1905, Mollison learned to fly in the Royal Air Force in the early 1920s. When he joined the RAF, James Allan Mollison, aged eighteen years, was the youngest officer in the Service. That he should have begun his flying career with a record was characteristic of the man who was to create so many records in aviation.

After leaving the RAF Mollison went to Australia, not as an aviator, but as a bathing beach attendant. That he would have returned to aviation sooner or later was inevitable, but his decision to do so was hastened while he worked as a beach attendant.

One afternoon an aeroplane from the New South Wales Flying Club flew low over the water. Mollison had not flown since his RAF days, but the sight of that aeroplane and the noise of its engines reminded him that flying was the one thing in life he wanted to do. He gave out his last towel, organized his last bathing party and obtained a post as instructor to the South Australian Flying Club, at Adelaide.

He went on to fly for Australian National Airways, it was during this time he was introduced to a certain female passenger. She was the similarly famous, pioneering English aviatrix, Amy Johnson. Mollison proposed to Amy Johnson only eight hours after that meeting – while still airborne.

Mollison and Johnson were married in July, 1932 and the press dubbed them ‘The Flying Sweethearts’. Together, they went on to set several ‘joint’ records. Mollison a gambler and a heavy drinker and, as a consequence, his marriage to Amy Johnson became strained and they were divorced in 1938, after a mere six years of marriage.

Mollison married again, but later separated for the second time. His drinking continued to be a problem and, in 1953, the Civil Aviation Authority Medical Board revoked his flying license.

His second wife, Maria bought the Carisbrooke Hotel in Surbiton for him – a temperance hotel. He died on this day 1959, aged just 54.

On September 7th 1815, explorer John McDouall Stuart was born in Dysart, Fife.

Descended from a family steeped in military service, Stuart was born in in a sixteenth-century home which now houses a museum in his honour, as seen in the pic. He was the son of army captain William Stuart and his wife Mary (née McDouall). Orphaned in his early teens, he attended the Scottish Naval and Military Academy, Edinburgh, and graduated as a civil engineer.

At the age of 23 he embarked on the Indus from Dundee, arriving at Holdfast Bay, South Australia, in January 1839. He entered the Government Survey Department and, despite primitive conditions in survey camps, found that nomadic life in the bush appealed to him. A man of small stature, his life became a constant battle against ill health and poverty. Assigned as draughtsman for the 1844-46 expedition of Captain Charles Sturt into the interior, Stuart gained valuable experience and received his leader’s full approbation. Sturt’s failure to reach the centre of the continent inspired Stuart’s later achievements.

Returning to Adelaide in January 1846, Stuart was incapacitated with scurvy for twelve months and moved to Port Lincoln for health reasons, while recovering he worked for fellow Scot and shipmate James Sinclair on his properties and tutored the Sinclair children.

In 1854 William Finke and the Chambers brothers, James and John, engaged him to survey leases and prospect for minerals in the northern Flinders Ranges. Between May 1858 and January 1860 Stuart led three expeditions into the Lake Eyre region, seeking new grazing lands and minerals for his sponsors.

In contrast to Sturt, Stuart travelled quickly with limited supplies. Horses were his only means of conveyance. On his first attempt to cross the continent, he reached the geographical centre of Australia on 22nd April 1860, accompanied by two companions and twelve horses --- a feat later described as ‘the greatest and pluckiest exploration ever accomplished’. He tried again the following year but it was not until 1862 that he finally made it to the northern shore.

In poor health Stuart returned to England in 1864, nearly blind and with a broken constitution. He died on 5th June 1866, a forgotten hero. He was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery, London, with a memorial stone erected by his sister Mary.

As a result of Stuart’s expeditions, the nature of the Red Centre was revealed, South Australia gained control of and settled the Northern Territory, and vast areas of the interior were opened up for European settlement. In 1872 the Adelaide-to-Darwin Overland Telegraph Line was completed along Stuart’s route.

His statue was erected in Victoria Square, Adelaide in 1904 and Central Mount Stuart, the Stuart Highway and Stuart Range are named in his honour. The John McDouall Stuart Society was founded in 1964 by descendants of his companions to perpetuate his name and achievements.

A second statue of Stuart can be found in Alice Spring. The statue has been hounded by controversy since it was gifted to the Alice Springs Town Council in 2010, with some saying the work is culturally insensitive. Protests accuse him of not asking permission to enter the land and of killing Arrernte people."You came to Mount Hay and you killed our mob," a letter from Aboriginal elders said. "You went to Attack Creek and you killed more of our mob. This is murder and we can't forget it." it continued.

The Australian Aboriginal singer Warren H Williams also spoke at a protest rally, mocking the size of the gun and calling for the statue to be removed.

For lawyers Daniel Ajak and Tut Tut, opening their own law firm in 2020 was a dream they shared as students in Adelaide.

It was nearly 10 years ago, as law students at Flinders University in Adelaide, that Daniel Ajak and Tut G.M. Tut first came up with a plan to set up their own law firm. “From when we were in first year, Daniel and I used to spend long hours talking about how we would open our own firm,” Mr Tut says.

Mr Tut and Mr Ajak were refugees from South Sudan via Ethiopia and Kenya who ended up in Adelaide when they were teenagers. Mr Ajak grew up in a refugee camp near Nairobi, where his father was a tribal elder involved in settling disputes and conflicts. He was sent with his older sister to live with his engineer uncle in Adelaide, where he won a scholarship to a private school. After initially planning to follow in his uncle's footsteps, he decided to go into the law instead. 

Mr Tut grew up in Nairobi itself, where his father worked as an auditor. “But it wasn't a middle class life,” he says. “It was struggle street all the way.” He spent two years after finishing high school, “working and lounging around before I was lucky enough to be accepted into law school”.

Mr Tut says he gravitated to the law because of his interest in current affairs and history and because he wanted to equip himself with the tools of justice and liberal democracy after having grown up in a society where lawlessness was rife. “I was also encouraged by people who said I can talk. I love advocacy and I feel comfortable expressing myself in front of people without taking a back seat.”

In Adelaide, the two started law school on the same day, graduated on the same day, were admitted on the same day, and everything they have done ever since has been with the aim of working towards their goal of setting up their own firm, says Mr Ajak, who is 29. 

After graduating they both worked in private firms in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, and both worked at Victoria Legal Aid until they left earlier this year to set up Ajak & Tut. “I feel like Daniel and I have been in each other's shadow since 2010,” says Mr Tut, 32.

“Every choice we’ve made has been strategic towards eventually opening our own firm together,” Mr Ajak says. 

While Mr Tut says there were times he was tempted to go to the Bar, he felt called to support the African-Australian community and specifically the South Sudanese community. “I always knew we would start the firm because what we wanted was a legacy not an individual pursuit. We wanted to have something that will outlast us and to help advance the interests of our community with a united voice.”

The original plan was to open their practice at the beginning of this year. And in January 2017 Mr Ajak sent Mr Tut a calendar invite to start their practice in January 2020. “It’s good to have a plan and then execute it. We missed by just a few months and opened in April 2020 instead,” he says.

At the moment much of their work is in criminal matters, much of it dealing with the ongoing issues of youth justice in their community. Mr Ajak says he originally went into criminal law after seeing media coverage of African youth crime and recognised the need for South Sudanese lawyers to advocate for those young offenders and their families. 

Both have worked in criminal law in private practice and at Victoria Legal Aid. But both also have experience in wider areas of the law and their ultimate aim is to build the civil side of their practice. 

“Our intention was always to have a general practice and grow it,” Mr Ajak says. “If we just stuck to crime it would be a disservice to our community and the wider society. Because members of our community not only have contact with the criminal justice system – they also need help with things like employment issues, personal injury law, family law and property law. And there are also a growing number of young entrepreneurs and business people who need commercial advice.”

Catering to the legal needs of their community has its challenges, they admit. Along with the particular stresses facing their own community, there are the extra demands of having to educate people about how the law and the justice system works in Australia. 

“One of our main challenges is giving people a reality check for what they can expect,” Mr Tut says. “We have to first get clients to understand that what we're saying is based on rational thought and evidence and the law. We get bombarded with a lot of information, sometimes accompanied by a lot of emotion, especially when there's a death.”

They recognise they are often the first port of call for many community members with more general concerns, and where they can’t help someone directly they will refer them to a community legal centre or to VLA. “We get inquiries every day,” Mr Ajak says, ���and those areas where we can help we’ll step up, and if we can’t, I tell the client: we can’t help you now but maybe in the future.” 

Opening up their firm Ajak & Tut Lawyers just as Melbourne went into the COVID-19 lockdown hasn’t fazed the two. If anything it has kept them from being overwhelmed, they say. Already working long days, seven days a week, Mr Ajak says if the pandemic hadn’t happened they might have been too busy. The lull means they have had time to refine their processes, set up their practice management software and hire two new legal assistants Awuoi Ayii and Jeanette Dusabe.

“Despite the pandemic and all the restrictions and all the delay in the justice system, we've managed to keep our heads above water and thrive,” says Mr Tut. “Hopefully we're on a strong foundation for when normality resumes.” The two are already planning to grow, hiring new lawyers and even expanding interstate once border restrictions are lifted. 

“We are talking to people who have had a few years experience in areas where we're looking to grow, such as the civil and commercial space and the child protection sector. We’re actively looking for people who have broadly the same experiences as us to put up their hand if they're willing to join.”
