Panata

A panata is a vow, oath, or promise which is a repayment for wishes or prayers granted in the last year. Highlighted during Holy Week, those who participate in panata willingly whip their own backs until they bleed or carrying a wooden cross. They may also be wearing a crown of thorns. This ritual is more than just a gory spectacle, most penitents do so as part of their own personal religious vow, or sacrifice. The panata may be the fulfilling of vows, expressing gratitude for being healed or blessed, or just to ask a personal favor.

These religious sacrifices are done every year in our place, San Fernando Pampanga.

On Parks

Tonight I was proud to participate with 30 neighbors at the Community Engagement Meeting at Las Palmas Park. The workshop introduced community members to the Countywide Park Needs Assessment and brought us together for the opportunity to voice our input on a list of park priorities for repair, replacement/adding, or new construction. As residents of the City of San Fernando (along with some stakeholders), we voted on what we want to see in our City.

Keeping in mind all the local moms, youth, and seniors I've been organizing with, I voted for the following potential priority projects:

Potential Project: Create a new skate park (received 26 dots)

Potential Project: Installation of security lights at Pacoima Wash Natural Park, a park that connects San Fernando with Pacoima and Sylmar (21)

Potential Project: Adding an amphitheater at Recreation Park to allow the City to host many outdoor events such as the City's movie series, concerts, and other special events providing low-cost entertainment options to the community (32)

And...

Potential project: Replacement of existing tot lot playground equipment making it ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.

There we other projects -10 listed and about 4 extra/added.

I understand there are no guarantees to the way the 30+ of us voted tonight but what I can personally guarantee is that I'll always keep in mind all you share with me. That's what drives my advocacy all the time.
