Pila History: The Flores de Mayo

La Reina del Mes de Mayo, Image from the book Vida de la Santisima Virgin printed in Madrid in 1921. The book belonged to Loreto del Mundo Relova (Mother of Cora Relova of the Pila Historical Society Foundation.)

The image depicts maidens with floral "crowns" paying homage to the Virgin Mary. This is the scene being re-enacted each year in the church at the finale of the Flores de Mayo celebration in Pila, Laguna, celebrated since 1888. - Cora Relova.

The Flores de Mayo is a Spanish Colonial-Era Catholic tradition which dedicates the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a time-honored custom in Pila. The community chooses a "hermano" and "hermana" for the responsibility of organizing and raising funds for the event, which can take a whole year.

The Flores de Mayo features "Reynas", or queens, who pay homage to the Virgin Mary. Some of these are:

Rosa Mystica ("Mystic Rose")—carries a bouquet of roses Also sings a farewell song to the Virgin Mary as she "ascends to Heaven".

Reyna de las Flores ("Queen of the Flowers")—carries a bouquet of flowers

"The rites of the Flores de Mayo for which Pila is well-known were introduced in 1888 by the parish priest, Fray Benito de los Infantes OFM (1885-1888). The Flores de Mayo, or "Flowers of May" is an annual thanksgiving to the Mother of God for the blessings and intercessions she has shown the town. The first "hermana" and "hermano" mayor were Señorita Josepha Dimaculangan, the first teacher of Pila, and Don Ruperto Relova, a cabeza de barangay (town head)."
