Here's a really fun shoot I did with Suburban Inns of CityFlats Hotel in Holland! I've always been a huge fan of this boutique hotel and was excited to have the opportunity to photograph it. (There's also a Grand Rapids and Port Huron location.) Each guest room has a unique layout and design which is a nice departure from the usual hotel experience where every room is the same ol' thing! As I progress as a photographer, I always strive to make my shoots as stress-free as possible, mainly by arranging as much time as possible to be available for me to shoot. Interior photography—especially hotel photography—gets so tedious, and my brain is fried after a whole day of shooting, especially if I'm trying to cram a lot of shots into a day. For this project, I allotted 3 separate days to get everything done. (I delivered about 50 shots in total.) I definitely couldn't have done that amount squeezed all into one day and get the same quality result.

De Lijnbaanflats gezien vanaf de Karel Doormanstraat, 1961.

Door de opzet van de Lijnbaan met de winkels apart van de woningen is de weg vrij voor een nieuw concept van stedelijk wonen: hoogbouw rond groene hoven. Helemaal nieuw is het concept niet, want kort voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog maakte Jan Wils een plan voor het terrein van de oude Diergaarde met vergelijkbare flatgebouwen in het groen. Maar de combinatie van een winkelcentrum met woningbouw en halfopen hoven is nieuw en ongebruikelijk voor een stadscentrum. In feite is er maar sprake van twee hoven: de Joost Banckertsplaats en de Jan Evertsenplaats. De derde schijfvormige flat staat langs de Kruiskade en dus niet aan een groenhof. Ook de vierde flat van dertien lagen, die pas in 1969 bij de uitbreiding van de Lijnbaan gereed kwam, staat niet aan een hof. Wel grenst deze met de galerijzijde aan de Jan Evertsenplaats. Een vijfde hoogbouwschijf die het Lijnbaanensemble completeert staat enigszins terzijde bij het station: het Stationspostkantoor.

In totaal zijn er 850 woningen gebouwd, in wat heden ten dage nauwelijks nog als hoogbouw wordt gezien. Opdrachtgevers waren pensioenfondsen en beleggers, zoals het Philips beambten Pensioenfonds en levensverzekeringsmaatschappij Olveh.

Zowel rond de groene hoven van de Joost Banckert- en de Jan Evertsenplaats liggen twee gebouwen van dertien en negen verdiepingen haaks op elkaar. Een laagbouw van winkels met twee woonlagen sluit het hof aan de Karel Doormanstraat af. De vierde zijde van het hof is onbebouwd; de hoven zijn er niet alleen voor de bewoners, maar voor alle gebruikers van de binnenstad. De flats aan de Joost Banckertsplaats zijn naar de opdrachtgevers en de reclameletters op het dak Olvehflat en Nillmijflat genoemd. De 13 verdiepingen hoge flat aan het begin van het Lijnbaanensemble op de Kruiskade kreeg de naam City House.

Architect Maaskant was supervisor van de woningbouw, die door verschillende architecten is uitgewerkt. Maaskant ontwierp zelf de Cityflat en de laagbouwblokken langs de Karel Doormanstraat. A. Krijgsman (1902-1986) de twee flats aan de Joost Banckertsplaats en Herman Bakker (1915-1988) de twee flats aan de Jan Evertsenplaats. In de hal van de Olvehflat is een wandschildering van Louis van Roode aangebracht.

Bogota - 01.04.2018

I arrived in Bogota via Avianca from Los Angeles. It was a decent experience, no complaints about it. DO be advised, that even though the plane departed from the USA, there was very little English spoken. Brush up on your Spanish language and download a translator onto your phone!

I got through immigration and customs painlessly and hired a shuttle to pick me up and take me to my hotel in Zona T. I am staying at Hotel CityFlats. It’s a comfortable boutique hotel in a safe neighborhood. There is always someone at the front desk to help arrange tours, reservations, or answer questions for you. For the most part, everyone has spoken English. I was happy that even though check-in is at 3p, I arrived at 9:15a and they had a room ready for me to enter. 

I exited around 12:45p and had the hotel call a taxi for me. 

Uber is technically illegal in Colombia, but many use it “on the downlow” as it is safer and cheaper than a taxi. Taxis can be dangerous, and if not formally called for and reserved, simply hopping into one could result in a kidnapping or theft. 

The taxi was about 15,000 pesos and 20-25 minutes from CityFlats to La Candelaria, the historic and touristy part of Bogota. 

Tipping: as of publication of this article, I’ve found out that tipping is not necessarily demanded or expected. If you should choose to tip, 10% is an acceptable amount. Some places will bake tip (or service charge) into their bill, so be on the lookout! 

I jumped onto the Bogota Bike Tour starting at 1:30p in the heart of Candelaria. Great experience, HIGHLY recommend! The bike tour was 40,000 pesos (roughly $14USD), and ran until 5:45p. 

We rode all over the city seeing different plazas and learning about some Colombian and Bogotan history. We also took in some cultural experiences: trying unique Colombian fruits in the fruit market, drinking beers and playing Tejo, biking through Bogota’s “red light district” (prostitution is legal here), stopping at a hole-in-the-wall cafe and coffee roaster to learn about their roasting process while sipping on lattes, and riding down Carrera 7 -  a pedestrian street full of musicians and artists, shops, and a great place to meet up with friends. We also did a short visit to Parque Nacional, which was still decorated with Christmas lights (as well as the rest of the city), and looked beautiful after sunfall. 

Once the bike tour was over, I headed out of Candelaria (it can be a bit seedy for women on their own once the sun goes down), and headed back to CityFlats to change for dinner.

I went to a restaurant called Andres D.C. While very touristy, it was the perfect way to kick off my Colombian adventure. The menu was the size of the Cheesecake Factory’s, and the place was chock full of English-speaking guests; I even made friends with some other solo travelers. While a bit pricey, the meal, the ambiance, and the experience were worth while. Bring your translator, few that work there speak English.
