Discovering I am a city person was kind of a shock. But to be fair, I don’t think I am a city person. I think I’m an SF city person. Even more specifically, I think I’m a Golden Gate Park SF city person.
I spend 90% of my time outside, and I grew up in a town with a population of abouuuut 2k. Spread over many miles of forest. I spent my days wandering the woods, singing songs to the trees, and hunting creatures under the rocks in the creeks, before I discovered the internet. And then I spent a lot my time online writing about nature, when I wasn’t in it. (And Sailor Moon.)
I moved to SF a little over a year ago, and people are constantly shocked by that. “I thought you were born here!” This city is apparently in my veins, in my eyes, under my skin. And I agree. This city is my heart.
It’s birds outside my window. It’s drag queens on the bus with me, on the way to their show. It’s a free community college I go to because learning. It’s the ocean, and the amazing fog that covers the world most days. It’s a giant sprawling park I live a block from and go pick blackberries in.
It’s getting up to move my car for street cleaning, and deciding, eh, might as well go do laundry while I’m up, since I have to move the car anyways. And that means boojie coffee while I wait, from one of the half dozen specialty coffee places near my laundromat, because obviously.
It’s home.
