Nature Coast Volunteer Center to Host MLK Food Drive

Local food pantries often find their stock of non-perishable food items depleted after the holidays. Nature Coast Volunteer Center to Host MLK Food Drive The Nature Coast Volunteer Center and AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP will be holding a food drive in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., who once asked “What are you doing for others?” Their goal is to help our local food pantries serve the citizens of Citrus County by providing nutritionalfood for their families. Non-perishable food donations will be collected Monday, December 11, 2023, through Monday, January15, 2024. Collection boxes will be set up at the Citrus County Resource Center in Lecanto, all five CitrusCounty Libraries and four Community Centers, as well as the Citrus County Tax Collector’s offices inCrystal River and Inverness. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for alland voiced that everyone has a role to play in making America what it ought to be. By serving on this dayand throughout the year, we honor Dr. King and help realize his dream of equality and opportunity for all.We are encouraging residents to gather friends, neighbors, church groups, clubs, and civic organizationsto join us in supporting these projects by registering to volunteer. The public is welcome to join at the Central Ridge Community Center (located at 77 Civic Circle, BeverlyHills) on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. to sort, count and pack the nonperishable food itemsthat will go out to local pantries. There will be light refreshments at the event, and participants areencouraged to register ahead of time. Oh my goodness! What a weekend! Yesterday was a GREAT DAY at the 1st annual Mermaids and Margaritas Festival in Crystal River FL! Hosted by the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce! Hands down the BEST event that I’ve ever attended/participated with in my 28 years of living and breathing in Citrus County. I would like to personally take a moment to thank all of the mermaids and mermen who assisted during the event, all of the volunteers, friends, and family who personally assisted Mertailor in making things happen the day of and everyday up to the event! Residents Save Money Using Smart Irrigation Technology

Like so many technologies that have evolved, irrigation controllers have come a long way in recent years. Residents Save Money Using Smart Irrigation Technology Today’s weather-based controllers simplify irrigation while maintaining a beautiful landscape, saving water, and saving money. Citrus County Utilities (CCU) is taking advantage of that technology. One program, focused on 434 of CCU’s highest water users, has saved customers nearly $300,000 on water bills and one hundred million gallons of water over a four-year period. To promote the benefits of advanced irrigation technology and efficient irrigation practices, the CitrusCounty Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) proclaimed July 2023 as Smart Irrigation Month. It isthe seventh consecutive year that the BOCC has supported this initiative. Ken Cheek, Citrus County Department of Water Resources Director, says about fifty percent of theutility’s residential water supply is used for landscape irrigation. “We have to be smarter about how weuse water and cut back when the landscape doesn’t need to be irrigated,” said Cheek. Smart irrigation technology does just that. It reduces irrigation after heavy rainfall and during coolermonths when grass doesn’t need as much. “July is hot in Florida and a peak month for irrigation wateruse,” said Cheek. He added that Smart Irrigation Month is a good time to highlight technologies thatcustomers can benefit from.Smart Irrigation Month is also a great opportunity for landscape companies to promote services, such as: - Helping customers plant and maintain a Florida-Friendly landscape that can thrive in Citrus County’sclimate and site conditions. - Installing Water-Sense labeled irrigation controllers that use real-time weather data to automaticallyadjust watering to meet plant needs. - Separating irrigation in landscape beds from turf and install low-volume micro-irrigation to applysmall amounts of water at the base of plants that minimizes evaporation and waste. (Micro-irrigation isnot limited by day of week and time of day irrigation restrictions.) - Adding or replacing rain sensors to prevent watering in rainy weather. - Helping customers program irrigation controllers to comply with watering restrictions. - Auditing irrigation systems to make sure water is being used effectively. CCU offers its customers a $100 account credit for upgrading their irrigation controller to a Water-Senselabeled model. These weather-based fixtures have been independently certified to save, and work as wellor better than standard fixtures.For more information on weather-based controllers and rebates, visit www.epa.gov/watersense.
