Directed by: Douglas Mackinnon
Cinematography by: Stephen McNutt
#dghda#Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency#cinematography of dghda#dirk gently#that's right#i'm gonna finally FINISH this series of posts lol#all it took was a global pandemic!#but fr i was spending so much time editing concert photos the last thing i wanted was to spend MORE time in photoshop doing this#but i got time now haha#and tbh i much prefer the cinematography in season 1#john pardue and samy inayeh gave it such a strong gorgeous LOOK#the shots in season 2 tend to be a lot more conventional and utilitarian#but there's still some good stuff in there and it deserves a look!

has the whole world already asked you for dghda and dw?
http://natalunasans.tumblr.com/post/167432796081/send-me-two-fandoms-and-ill-tell-you
i’ll do just the american dirk gently series, of course, because i haven’t seen the bbc one nor read far enough into the novels to make conclusions…
Which has the better protagonist: since dirk gently is in a very loose sense a spin-off of doctor who, this seems an unfair question. however, dw has an unfair advantage: because of regeneration, dw has a more varied and therefore more interesting protagonist. if we count the companions as protagonists instead of the doctor or dirk, then dw still has the advantage of numbers for variety, but i would say that on its smaller scale, dghda holds its own with an interesting cast of companions. there’s also been a spoonie companion already in s1 whereas dw hasn’t been too great with including disabled companions. to be fair, both have arguably had companions with mental illnesses, though.
Which has the better villain: definitely dw hahaha. even if we talk about monsters instead of the master… it would be hard to beat dw’s array of both clever and ridiculous monsters.
Which has the better plot: here dghda has an unfair advantage. because it’s only had 2 seasons instead of 54 YEARS, the plots can be tightly constructed. but nobody watches dw for the plot, i think. (weirdly, story =/= plot. for me, dw has good stories when i feel like the people and their reactions and interactions with each other make sense, even if i’m pretty sure the plot doesn’t.)
Which has better cinematography: i have no idea about cinematography, but i have seen some amazing/beautiful shots in both. probably dw just because there is more to choose from.
Which one is more fun: in dghda, the wtf is a feature, not a bug. also, because it’s not something i’ve been into for like 30yrs, i’m less attached to the characters and their outcomes, which makes it less stressful. i still get pretty attached, though. o_o
Which one makes me think the most: dghda makes me speculate more in the sense of the mystery of each case. but dw, because it’s such a big universe and because i am more involved in it, gives more food for meta. dw definitely gives me more fanworks ideas, as i have written around 50 things for dw and none for dghda (yet?) and only done a few doll photocomics for dghda compared to hundreds for dw.(also because i can get really mad at dw, seems like that makes me get more ideas. i can’t get that mad at dghda.)
Which do I watch when I want to relax: i don’t actually watch things to relax. i need to have enough mental energy to engage A LOT in order to watch anything at all.
Which do I watch when I want it to consume me: whatever that means, i think i’m so detail-minded that it could be either. or anything else i would watch on purpose.
Which is my favorite: that’s probably always gonna be dw, i mean it’s been kind of a life-long thing, so…

Dirk Gently and Harry potter ?
Which has the better protagonist: dirk is criminally underrated and really SHOULD achieve this level of recognisability,,, but harry potter is one of the most iconic literary figures of our time and i feel like i will be struck dead if i don’t give him this. so. additionally, I Love Him
Which has the better villain: once again, dirk wins on originality alone. ONCE A FUCKIN AGAIN, what’s important here is that both works encourage a healthy distrust of the government. starting to see a trend in the media i consume here.
Which has the better plot: cbdhbhcasljds dirk is legendary for its plot but. but i highkey love hp’s plot. it just involves so much spectacular world building. i mean dghda does too tho,,,,, jhkdsnds I CAN’T CHOOSE.
Which has better cinematography: i’m gonna be honest i was judging hp by the books (cuz they’re better) but dirk by the show still. so dirk lol.
Which one is more fun: oh my god. i can’t. harry potter is capable of invoking that childlike sense of wonder and pure joy in me that few other things can. but dirk,,, ARGH. BOTH. BOTH, OKAY? BOTH.
Which one makes me think the most: probably dirk again. still dumb, folks.
Which do I watch when I want to relax: harry potter is the ultimate comfort book
Which do I watch when I want it to consume me: i’ve read hp so many times i can practically recite it so probably dirk but they both can when i want them to.
Which is my favorite: DON’T. YOU. DARE.

Top 5 TV shows
Wow…Thanks you so much for sending something in!! My favourite TV shows change from time to time but here’s a list of my current top 5 (I’ve included explanations bc I don’t get to talk abt some of them much):
1. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (pretty obvious from my blog)
A sci-fi/fantasy show about a detective who solves mysteries with the help of the universe and a somewhat unwilling assistant (+ other things)
I…really love this show. Its characters are amazing, season 1 was one of the best things I had experienced in my life, and the fandom is incredible and fairly unproblematic. I really loved all the different personalities on this show, the characters all stand out and have their own quirks and issues. The friendships that are built during this show are great and I enjoy the dynamics between so many characters. I loved the various storylines and how they all converge at certain times. I also really love the cast, they all seem like genuinely gorgeous people and I would love to be friends with all of them. I’m going to stop typing before I write an essay
2. One Day At A Time
A sitcom Netflix Original Series about a Cuban family in the USA
I think this show is great because it has portrayed so many social/racial subjects and issues, and only in two seasons! (now renewed for a third!) I also love the characters, maybe not as much as in DGHDA but they feel sincere and the family dynamic is wonderful. My favourite character is Elena. The first season features her coming out story (I cried in the finale but then again, so did you) and the second season includes her [somehow successful] attempts at getting a girlfriend!
3. Sabrina the Teenage Witch
A teenager’s magical powers manifest when she is sixteen and get her into some strange situations at her school
So you probably know this show. This show was a part of my childhood and I still love its ridiculousness and the cat who is (in my opinion) the most relatable character on the show. Almost every episode is separately random and wonderful.
4. Merlin
A retelling of the Arthurian legend in which Merlin becomes Prince Arthur’s manservant and saves him and the kingdom from death and destruction
I like this show bc the dynamic between Merlin and Arthur is so enjoyable to watch and I also love Katie McGrath. The stupidity and drama in this show is incredible.
5. Bromance
A Taiwanese drama about a girl who has been forced to be a boy for the first 25 years of her life, and the final 100 days before she can be a girl again.
Ok, hear me out. I’d never seen a k-drama or anything like that before I’d watched this, and I haven’t watched any k-dramas since, so I don’t know how this compares. But this show was super enjoyable to watch and I loved it until the end. That is, the ending isn’t great, but the rest of the show makes up for it (believe me). It includes so many cliches (I love a good cliche) but executes them so well, and the cinematography is absolutely beautiful. It is a romance so if you’re not into that stuff then don’t watch it, but otherwise I’d highly recommend it and I believe it’s on Netflix in most regions!
Ok, that’s all! Sorry for taking a while to answer these! If you’ve watched any (or several) of these and want to talk about them hmu!

dirk gently and stranger things for the fandom ask (have a great night/day!)
tysm evie!!
Which has the better protagonist: listen,,,, listen buddy. i love all my kids with my Whole Entire Heart but dirk gently is frankly fuckin iconic and amazing. so dysfunctional. so gay. so good.
Which has the better villain: dghda is BATSHIT INSANE but the upside down is rly fuckin cool,,,,, i love both but dghda wins on originality alone. the important thing is both shows promote a healthy distrust of the government.
Which has the better plot: dirk is so fucking satisfying and legendary for its plots so it has to win
Which has better cinematography: HHHHH DIRK HAS SOME 10/10 SHOTS BUT IM GIVING THIS ONE TO STRANGER THINGS. ITS SO PLEASING TO WATCH.
Which one is more fun: stranger things has this kind of rly wholesome and funny but also creepy as FUCK vibe, dirk also has this vibe but with more pure chaos. so dirk is more fun overall, i think. despite being sad as fucking shit a lot of the time, its always hidden.
Which one makes me think the most: oh man, i have literally no idea. i’m dumb. but probably dirk.
Which do I watch when I want to relax: dirk because even tho it really doesn’t scare me, stranger things has more of a horror vibe and can thus be unsettling sometimes.
Which do I watch when I want it to consume me: both. they both excel at this. probably stranger things a bit more actually. but they’re both great for this.
Which is my favourite: dirk. by a smidgeon. they’re both incredible.

#dghda#cinematography of dghda#dirk gently's holistic detective agency#i like that for most of agent wheedle's shots in this ep (after he's been soul swapped ofc) are shot like classic horror bad guys#mostly low angles#wide angle lens almost to the point of being a fisheye so he seems like uncomfortably up in our space
