13 Assassins (2011) Review: A Modern Masterpiece in Samurai Cinema
13 Assassins, directed by Takashi Miike, is an electrifying revival of the samurai film genre. It stands as a modern counterpart to classics like Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, blending reverence for tradition with a willingness to push boundaries. Miike’s direction is as precise as it is chaotic, delivering a film that speaks to the soul of the samurai ethos while challenging our understanding of…

It's crazy how Dungeon Meshi's manga can feel more cinematic and emotional than the anime to me, even when they're practically the same. Compared to the anime, this moment is such a heartbreaking gut-drop. The way Kui uses negative space and flat compositions to create a sense of horrific stillness is so key.
The way the text (Senshi's monologue) is sequestered to an empty corner of a panel or huddled away from the edge of its text box is not only a great way of showing Senshi's headspace (fearful, isolated, dissociating), but creates a visual representation of pause, as if you hold your breathe after each line. The first panel puts us directly in Senshi's perspective too (compared to in the anime, which puts us as an outside observer over Senshi's shoulder). The detail of the door and bricks so effectively implies that he stared at it for so long, waiting and hoping, that its image is burned in his memory. The wood grain, the brick arch, the number of rivets. The lack of dialogue in the second panel shows a moment of realization too –– "he's dead" (also a great example of the Kuleshov effect). And it's that pause that creates a beat and sets a great rhythm to his headspace, like a music rest: "He never came back." (oh god.) "I'm all alone." Finally, the third panel's negative space, cropping Senshi, shows how truly alone he feels. Without his family, the world ceases to exists. Under shock, he traps himself in a 1-foot radius, too scared to even perceive a world outside its boundaries; a world that can hurt him, kill him, make him disappear with it. There is only his body, the stone beneath his feet and against his back, his thoughts, and that awful bowl of soup.
Even though they're a series of flat images, there's an implicit reading of silence in Senshi's realization and horror. Kui influences your experience to slow down and take your time.
Compare this to the anime, which fills every shot with dialogue. The pacing is fast; we never get to sit in silence like we do with the manga. The horizontal frame allowed the boarders to add Senshi, turning the composition into an over-the-shoulder shot, which takes us out of Senshi's POV. They also added a zoom-out in shot one, which adds unnecessary energy to a very somber scene. The tightening on Senshi as a close-up reaction shot also dulls the moment. In the original panel, Senshi stares ahead at the empty space to his left as a shadow surrounds his mind. It not only shows how Senshi's senses are dulling and his world is shrinking (setting up panel three), but shows how terrified Senshi is of what's in front of him, how the air itself becomes pitch black and opaque, how Senshi is surrendering himself to fear. The pacing is understandable and necessary; this episode packed a lot of story content together. It's just a shame because it really (imo) deflated one of the most nauseating moments in Dungeon Meshi.
#dungeon meshi#senshi#analysis#personal#long post#not art#because comics are inherently more abstract and rule-breaky the format thrives off show don't tell#i think trigger is doing a great job overall but they missed the mark on this scene#for me cinematic storytelling will prioritize rhythm; tension; and silence over plot. that's why the manga feels more “cinematic”#if you've been enjoying the anime i cannot recommend also reading the manga enough. it's a completely different experience with much more#subtext and emotion to draw from

A young Christopher Lee guest stars as dastardly Larry Spence - a rising star in the world of journalism, turned blackmailer and then murderer - in The Vise: The Final Column (1.16, ABC, 1955); the episode wasn't seen in the UK until 1963, as part of ITV drama anthology Tension
#fave spotting#christopher lee#the vise#tension#1955#the final column#for more information on the complicated origins of The Vise (a US production entirely made in the UK) see my prev fave spotting post for#Jacqueline Hill's appearance on the series#Lee was hardly a newcomer when he made this ep; he'd been acting professionally since being demobbed a couple of years after ww2 and#was something of a stock player in british cinemas‚ usually in minor bit parts as caddish gentlemen or authority figures and military men#one of his first really significant roles would be later in '55 as a submarine commander in The Cockleshell Heroes#he was also making semi regular appearances on tv in small guest spots‚ albeit sometimes uncredited (as in ITV's The Adventures of the#Scarlet Pimpernel also around this time). a jobbing actor‚ basically‚ and not yet the cinematic icon he would begin (that journey starting#at the end of the decade and the beginning of his association with Hammer studios and horror immortality). he's very good here tho#host and narrator Ron Randell even describes him near the start of the ep as (something like) 'young‚ handsome‚ but sinister' which#may as well have been printed on business cards for the kind of work Lee would find himself doing for the next decade or so#yes he's a real rotter‚ a strangler of ladies and a blackmailer of tycoons‚ and in true Vise fashion he gets his just desserts and the mora#status quo is maintained (this is a very moral series and takes pains to inform us via Randell exactly what kind of punishment the villains#received after the events depicted)#Lee made two more Vise episodes but as Network (rip beloved) seemingly took a random approach to which episodes to include in their#first volume of the series (and obviously as it turned out only volume) i have no idea if either of those are on the set#one can hope! and i do bc it's lovely seeing him so young but with such a meaty role

Thoughts on the new Monster Hunter trailer?
Equal parts thrilled and apprehensive!
I've always preferred a more cartoony and colorful MH that doesn't take itself too seriously. World wasn't my cup of tea for various reasons, such as the emphasis on realism, too much time sucked away by a disinteresting plot, and the disgustingly visceral sound design.
Wilds is very obviously World-like. As soon as I learned it's FULLY voice acted, I groaned in agony not gonna lie. I'll be perfectly fine with it being plot heavy as long as they make cutscenes skippable. Not sure yet how I feel about having a handler again. Would like to see Sunbreak's followers system return, but I'm not confident.
New locale looks beautiful!! Mohran hype maybe??? The new large monsters are curious. Amphibian monster! Zamtrios?? Please please please zamtrios please pleeease please. Great Sword moveset is funky. I like the gap-closing counter attack, but I also kind of miss the goofy simplicity of the old school hit-and-run playstyle.
Seikret is precious. I hope we get to customize their colors and deck them out in cute cringey outfits. Very surprised that you can sharpen/drink potions etc. while riding them, that was the thing about Rise's palamutes that I felt needed to be nerfed. I DO like that Seikret can carry one other weapon for you to switch out between. Hopefully that means you can't freely change equipment at the main camp like in Rise. I like having to prepare more carefully for hunts!
#monster hunter#asks#i'm going to stay open minded. i think i'll be more excited once we see more actual HUNTING happening#instead of cinematic dodge rolling to create tension for a trailer lol#that great sword counter made me GASP. sexiest thing ever. hell yeah#i feel like i'm utterly alone when it comes to sound design nitpicking in games.#world's monster sound effects actually made me nauseous oftentimes. paolumu being a major offender#i know that's me being autistic and having weirdness about audio in general. but i've never had that problem in any other mh game.#or almost any other video game. period#so i hope wilds won't be as bad as world was in that regard

Things that will never happen but would be absolutely hilarious : a sequel to the super mario bros movie based on Luigi's Mansion.
And in the trailer this time it's Mario who has a strangely homoerotic scene with King Boo making the fandom go bananas again.
#super mario bros#mario movie#Luigi stole his bro's usual nemesis so Mario can have a little foe yay tension. as a treat.#it's all a set up for the third movie act of Daisy and Peach getting together#and of course the way bowuigi drew the old fans out of the woods#that would be bound to draw the fans of other rareships#mario cinematic verse running gag becomes ''each movie must cause shipping frenzy from a trailer

Didn't think the 1989 version of The Woman In Black would be scarier than the one with Dan Radcliffe in it
I was Wrong flkjdsafkldsja, but I'm delighted to have been wrong. I had missed getting scared with more practical effects/careful timing of things in the background of shots appearing and disappearing, and this one scratches that itch well.
#text post#also fun seeing how differently they interpreted the characters and how they act#personally i'm realising that the Dan version was sort of. Americanised? Which is probably something I should have realised at first watch#but it only hits now when it's like. how to explain#the casts of both versions are both amazing let's preface with that#but. the Dan version felt very Cinematic. I got scared but was also very aware I was watching An Movie during it#(it got colour-graded quite blue which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it does register in my head as Peak Cinematic for the current time#the version of the characters in this 89 version feel slightly more real? accurate to the culture they come from?#like. there's an American Openness between the ones in the Dan version#they're too open to share and hand out compliments and comments like candy they have too much of#everyone is Nice in a way that feels mildly unrealistic#and when they are mad at each other there's tension but a tension#that to me at least you don't worry abt much bc it just feels almost Already Resolved#and it does sort of just drop off and wind up that way tbh#tho I admit it's been a bit since I read the original story so my apologies if I'm misremembering that it did the same in the book#but I could swear there was more that bit of tension there#anyway it isn't that the 89 characters are all mean but they feel Actually British for lack of better words#they have moments of kindness and do have a general sense of like. yeah they care for their community but also they're getting on w/themsel#and their business and not lingering on the interactions#They're kind but not nice and they just. get on with things which is very nice#and feels more in line with the time period to me/what I expect out of a story like this#anyway speaking of Dan found out the guy playing Arthur in this also played the dad in the gross wizard franchise#which wasn't something I expected to see lol#this is my long barely an essay no one asked for and your sign to go watch the 89 version asap#it's on YT for free which is where I'm watching it so genuinely if anyone want link. I have link fjkdlsfjadlsa#I have so many more thoughts comparing and contrasting Dan to 89 but there are so many tags i'm making myself stop lmao

i just woke up from the wildest dream about a horror movie called lume that was so vivid when i woke up i thought it was real
#dreams#scary dreams#sleepy rambles#i was SO paranoid walking around my house afterwards because no one is home#it was about a stalker named johnnie killing his best friend/object of attraction and keeping his body in his house#i remember it SO vividly that i texted my brother to come inside so i could talk to him about it#what the fuck was my brain trying to tell me with all those cinematic shots of him being haunted by that body#anyways#cool movie! solid 9/10 the music could have used some work but the silent sequences added some good tension

listen i know the trope is that americans love guns and all but i just finished two seasons of a bri'ish drama and there had to have been a gun in literally every scene
#also i guess the britbongs find “person pointing gun at someone and threatening them” is the height of cinematic tension#because it was literally every other scene

I Am About To Start Ripping Out Pages And Eating Them.
#in loving memory of my good friend reston but that was CINEMATIC#most movies dont have that kind of a death grip on me#its not even the volume of words the entire sequence would only take up half a page if it was presented like any other wall of text#the shape. the pacing. the physical embodiment of tension building. building. building. building. snapping.#a handful of words stretched taut across a handful of pages. when will i next get to see that do beautifully executed?
