(Secret) Santa Baby
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/uOcGLSJ by jemgirl “The limit for Secret Santa is thirty dollars, Bucky.” “I know that,” he snapped, swiveling around in his chair to face Steve. “Then why were you adding a five-hundred dollar falconry excursion to your cart just now?” “For myself,” he said, defensively. Steve rolled his eyes. “Buck, everyone knows you’ve had an irrational hatred for birds ever since one crapped on your leg that time when we were eating ice cream on Mrs. Johnson’s stoop.” Or: Maybe some Christmas magic courtesy of Steve, is just what Sam and Bucky need. Laurent Bardainne & Tigre d'Eau Douce - fantastic album rooted in cinematic soul-jazz with excursions into other genres. Not library music: longer tracks, some have vocals
The soundtrack of a sunny day at the Eden Beach Club! After the commercial and critical success of the album 'Hymne au soleil', Laurent Bardainne and Tigre d'Eau Douce defy the laws of attraction, aiming beyond the sun with Eden as their target in their third album 'EDEN BEACH CLUB.' A return to their successful uninhibited formula, blending lingering groove, luxurious soul, flamboyant jazz, and electronic spirals. Geographically or musically, no map can locate this place of eclecticism anymore, with each track leading to an invitation to dance and celebrate a moment. That of an eternal sunset, striped with electricity by Laurent Bardainne and Tigre d'Eau Douce." Do Moony and Padfoot ever encounter the full-wolf werewolves supposedly living in the Forbidden Forest during their full moon excursions? What kind of shenanigans would they get up to with them?
ahhh I had to go look up the full-wolf werewolves, and then I completely forgot to come back to this!
honestly so wild of jkr to add this bit of 'world-building.'
assuming these wolves do exist while remus is at hogwarts, I feel like there would be some silly wolf drama. like they're trying to adopt moony into their pack, but they're pointedly excluding padfoot bc he's comparatively small and domesticated, and moony has the character arc of every cinematic teenage girl ever, where after temporarily ditching padfoot for his cool new bad bitch wolf friends, he learns a valuable lesson about friendship.
but if these wolves didn't exist while remus was at hogwarts, one must ask... where did they come from?? and are they definitely the result of two werewolves fucking, or was one of the parents perhaps a dog animagus? much to ponder...

Independent Excursion #1: Studio Ghibli Museum and Park
On May 10, some friends and I went to the Studio Ghibli Museum, which is outside of Tokyo. We purchased reservation tickets a month ahead of time, so we showed up at our given time and waited in the queue. Once we entered the museum, we were not allowed to take any photos inside. We also received our ticket stub for the short film we would watch later. The main exhibition on the bottom floor of the museum is dedicated to the process of creating an animated film. There were sketches of Ghibli characters, stills and screen grabs of Ghibli films, and a variety of interactive ways to engage with the exhibit. My favorite ones involved rolling the film of a scene from “Spirited Away”; by adjusting your hand’s speed you could adjust the speed of the animation. On the second floor, there is a big Cat Bus for children to play on, and on the roof, there is a life size robot from “Castle in the Sky” that you can take pictures with. The rooftop is filled with lush greenery and vegetation. After getting souvenirs and gifts at the Mamma Aiuto Shop, we had some treats at the Straw Hat Café. We ended by going to the Saturn Theatre and watching a short, 13-minute film. It was a mini-sequel to “My Neighbor Totoro”. I enjoyed watching it with Japanese audio, but there were no English subtitles. I usually watch Ghibli movies with the English audio, so it was fun to try and follow along with the plot without any subtitles or audio I could understand.
On May 23, we went to Ghibli Park in Aichi. We arrived later to our reservation than expected, so we did not have enough time to visit all of the different areas surrounding the Ghibli Warehouse, where we spent the most time. We browsed the various shops, and a couple of my friends checked out their food options outside. I was able to see and take pictures in a recreation of Arrietty’s house from “The Secret World of Arrietty” as well as the garden, the entrance to her home. We walked by Children’s Town which replicates where Studio Ghibli is located in Tokyo. We also walked through the main exhibition which walks you through famous scenes in many of the Ghibli movies, and you can take pictures at each scene! Besides the Grand Warehouse, we were able to briefly visit the Valley of Witches. We were able to go into a replica of Kiki’s attic room from “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and see Howl’s Castle and Sophie’s hat shop from “Howl’s Moving Castle”.
Academic Reflection:
Something that stood out to me was the stark contrast between the museum and the park. The museum was more informational regarding the animation process, while the park was more of a photo op area to immerse oneself into various cinematic universes. At first, I felt the museum could use more engaging and interactive elements, but after reading “Anime tourism: discursive construction and reception of the Studio Ghibli Art Museum”, I realized how the park and museum are supposed to provide completely different experiences. The small nods to Ghibli in the design and decoration of the museum add a more subtle immersive element compared to outwardly blunt decoration elements and life size scenes at the Studio Ghibli Museum. I also learned through my reading that the museum was designed by Hayao Miyazaki with the goal of making the museum itself an exhibit.
Additionally, although it was a journey and a half to get to both the museum and the park, I believe that their geographic isolation from major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto serve to emphasize the strong connection between Studio Ghibli and the natural environment. Reading the following excerpt by Denison (550) furthered my belief:
“The association between the park and the museum purposefully mirrors themes within many of Miyazaki and Takahata’s Ghibli films, which frequently entertain pro-environment motifs and plot lines (McCarthy 1999; Napier 2005). The landscape around the Art Museum therefore works not just as a marker of its distinctiveness as a place of anime tourism, it further marks the Art Museum as geographically separate from the urban norm of Tokyo. This in turn reinforces the importance of nature to the Ghibli brand of filmmaking, and the location of the museum in Mitaka helps to situate the Art Museum as a cultural geographic response to previous anime tourism sites located within the centre of Tokyo.”

Excursion to the Record Shop
On Tuesday afternoon we went to Steamboat Records for an authentic browsing experience. I took this opportunity to gather primary research.
I looked at the instruments, particularly the variety of guitars. I looked through the records.
I chose to look at these albums because of their interesting photography techniques, type and layout. The use of blur, collage and chopped up long exposure shots struck me as effective ways to convey the music visually.

You don’t have to answer this it’s ok, I’m just genuinely curious on how you come up with a full Navi name. I get the structure a bit but how does one come up with a Navi last name? This is a stupid question Ik😭
Hi there and thank you for asking for my advice!🥰 I hope I don’t get too technical in my explanation, but consider it a professional distortion because I specialize in this very field. I will try to keep it as simple as possible but don’t hesitate to ask me further questions if you want to go deeper. Also, no question is stupid, and all deserve an answer. It is right to ask anything about what you doubt or are curious about. If you find someone in me who can satisfy them, I’ll gladly answer, even if within the limits of my knowledge🥹
Na’vi is an arbitrarily created language, like Esperanto, and this makes it a little easier to grasp and study than a natural language, as grammar and phonetics should have no exceptions because of the evolution of the language in time and space. Although Na’vi actually does have them in pronunciation due to actor errors that have become canonical.
Fictional languages for cinematic use have become a very serious area of filmmaking, particularly in historical, fantasy, and sci-fi. James Cameron's will for the Na'vi language to sound authentic is no surprise. The aim was for it to sound alien, but for it to be replicable by the actors, whether they were playing natives or humans approaching the language. So, basically, it involved the phonatory apparatus of the Na’vi being similar if not identical to the human one, but the sounds produced were mixed to make them sound from another world. Paul Frommer (the Na’vi language inventor) combined elements from various languages, including Polynesian, Eastern European, Japanese, and Swahili. From Japanese and Swahili in particular, he took the agglutinative structure. Swahili is a lingua franca that arose from trade between the inhabitants of the East African coast and the Arabs, from whom it has been heavily influenced.
I am doing all this tedious background because the structure of full names in Na’vi is derived from Arabic more or less (Arabic names are far more complex).
Neteyam te Suli Tsyeyk’itan = Neteyam of Sully (family) son of Jake >> te is the particle of belonging to something/someone [a borrowing of the Japanese particle の]. Tuktirey te Suli Neytiri’ite = Tuktirey of Sully (family) daughter of Neytiri >> in the case of words preceded by an apostrophe [‘itan/‘ite and so on], the particle dropped, but the positions between the two objects are reversed.
Just as in Arabic, Na’vi emphasizes from whom you descend, and whose child you are. For male names, one looks to the paternal line, and for female names to the maternal line.
I hope my long introduction did not confuse you and that this was the answer you were looking for. I tried to cram in as much information as possible without getting bogged down. But to give a dry answer on the structure of Na'vi names without at least an excursion into the language itself seemed to me to be fragmentary.
If you’re interested, there are portals on the Internet to generate names, divided into male and female. I recommend this one: https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/avatar-names.php I use it when I don't know what to call my characters, especially to vary with family names. There are also forums for learning grammar, and phrases. But I recommend you first start with the Na'vi dictionary compiled by Mark Miller and authorized by Frommer, with phonetics and basics. Beware of automatic translators, they are poorly done.
💕Thank you again for asking me. I'm flattered beyond words!💕

Rescue Russian - pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe verse
"Hi there! You! Yes, you! Would you like your own too-literal semi-feral Russian to take home? She promises not to burn the place down because she refuses to cook, but I'm sure she can cook up some other shenanigans!"
This verse is much like the one you know, Natalia Romanova was pulled out of Russian control by Clint Barton on an op where he had been told to kill her and he made a different call.
While Natasha excels in the field, she can be a lot to deal with off-mission for a lot of different reasons. She currently lives in SHIELD run housing, simply for purposes of damage control. Natasha regularly leaves the SHIELD buildings for exposure therapy, of sorts. She's not used to making her own choices, or being in charge of her own behavior so she has a lot to learn before they let her out into the world full-time.
where to find her
Natasha can be found wandering around her SHIELD housing unit, or occasionally nearby. She also has a habit of leaving doors open or unlocked, and doesn't like to close curtains. This can be especially annoying to a SHIELD approved roommate if she has one.
SHIELD approved babysitters are allowed to take Natasha on excursions while between missions - one of her favorite things to do is to go to the Museum of Natural History, but she also just enjoys anywhere that she can engage in people watching.
Natasha occasionally takes herself on adventures, always to places that she's been before. They are usually small things like going to the café, or the bookstore, but it usually frustrates whoever is supposed to be keeping an eye on the super spy.
Agents who are assigned to engage with the 'Rescue Russian' are usually on a break from the field, but in the event that they are needed in the field, may be occasionally swapped out with someone else. Natasha is civil to new handlers, but she does have her preferred SHIELD assigned friends.

Book Review: Aliens vs Predator: Ultimate Prey (Various Authors)
It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I’m a huge fan of the ‘Alien‘ franchise, and also a big fan of the ‘Predator’ series. Their famously crossed over butting of heads has led to some...decidedly mixed cinematic offerings, and a whole bunch of games, books and comics that vary from fantastic (Fire and Stone) to indisputable guilty pleasures (A v P v Judge Dredd). I must admit I’ve never read a AvP novel before this anthology offering, although I’ve dipped my toes into the written world of the ‘Alien’ franchise several times in recent years (The two Alex White novels are excellent). This collection of short stories seemed like a fun way to see how these two franchises merged in writing...and, well, indeed it was!
Featuring 15 stories from 16 authors, this is a pretty robust little anthology book. One thing I really appreciated was the consistency in length. There’s a little give either side, but pretty much every installment in this book runs for around 30 pages. That’s just the right amount to make for a solid day’s reading, which means you can comfortably work your way through the book at a nice clip of one story a day, with no need to pause in the middle of each one. You can obviously read more, or indeed less, but I found the pacing of each story to be just right for a fun daily excursion into the AvP universe.
As with any anthology collection, there’s ups and downs in terms of quality. It’s hard to feature so many authors, all dabbling in the same playground, without encountering some lackluster offerings along the way. There’s no utterly unreadable stories in the book, especially since none particularly outstay their welcome, but there are some rather uninspired concepts and iffy characterisation going on here. I won’t call out any of my least favourites, but needless to say there’s about 3 or 4 that just felt completely bland and/or more than a little goofy in premise and execution. There’s also a frequent lean towards including ‘female’ Predators in the mix, which whilst not the worst thing ever, did rub me the wrong way a little. I personally consider the Predator species as something of a gender ambiguous design, but several of the stories use the female body template designed for the game ‘Predator: Hunting Grounds’, which means they have breast armour and a generally smaller, curvier figure. That’s not to say they don’t still kick ass, and it’s also not to say that several of the stories don’t use the concept of female warriors/hunters in thematically interesting ways, I just prefer the idea that the basic Predators we’ve met in the films aren’t necessarily male or female, or...we at least can’t tell. Not every two-legged fictional species needs to conform to human body standards.
My favourite story is definitely ‘The Hotel Mariposa‘ by David Barnett, which pairs Aliens and Predators with a ‘haunted’, reality distorting hotel, where a group of amateur ghost hunters get caught up in the chaos of both the hotel’s influence, but also the two warring factions within. It’s a really creative and fun idea, pairing shades of ‘The Shining’ with AvP in a way that seems insane, but ultimately really works. I would love to see that concept, or something similar explored more in a full novel. This anthology really works best when it’s pairing these franchises with interesting concepts and time periods. Or at the very least, interesting portrayals of its creatures...particularly the Predators themselves, which are obviously intelligent beings with a known honour code. When they’re made into characters themselves, with internal thought processes and relationships with the human protagonists, rather than just being big beefy monsters, that’s when things feel especially engaging. I could’ve done with less of the ‘hoomans’ kinda internal dialogue, but I did tend to enjoy the stories with Predators as characters more than the ones with them as generic killers. Included of note in this anthology book are follow-ups to both the movie ‘Predators’ and the novel ‘Aliens Phalanx’, the latter of which even written by the original novels author; Scott Sigler. Whilst the ‘Predators’ continuation is a little lacking, I really enjoyed the ‘Phalanx’ sequel, and it’s interesting to see what was once just an Aliens story weave in Predator mythology in ways that work surprisingly well and open the door for another continuation, short or long-form, in the future.
All in all, this is a mixed bag, as all anthologies are. But none of the stories are complete duds, and those that are a little lacking are never unending, thanks to the rather nice ‘tight 30 pages’ format of the novel. It’s worth getting through some of the duds to enjoy the highlights, because there’s some really fun reads here. If you’re a fan of these franchises, particularly combined? This one’s a fun read, and definitely worth a look.
Read it or Leave it : Read It.

OUT NOW: Todeskino 'MMMiniatures'
https://cruelnaturerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/mmminatures
Following his first album 'Debutante', which was praised as "melancholic, cinematic ambience somewhere between Sixteen Candles and Twin Peaks“ (Electronic Sound Magazine), Peter Lersch (Todeskino) returns with this latest release for Cruel Nature.
Here, Todeskino reaches out to the cute, bleepy and playful excursions of electronica. A potent mix of ambient and electropop orchestrated by sugarcoated chords, bursting bass lines and squelching synth leads - each track creates a musical microcosm of highly unusual sounds. Spiked with Todeskino‘s typical ingredients of cinematic melancholy, listeners will be carried away into a mellow, colourful world.
Would sit nicely in the Warp Records 90s catalogue, alongside the likes of Polygon Window
Tapes by the Audio Tape People
Mastering by Slow Clinic

not a narrative - freewriting about freewriting
Oh lord I feel like writing words. Recently I warned her that writing is hard narrative structure is hard. Finishing stories is hard. We start full of wind, sails stretched, lines taught, a clear line to the horizon, open water, wind at our backs. And then it gets messy and we have to change tack. We find ourselves in the spray of metaphors and vague impressions and then what? Where is the ship going? Why this metaphor? The lines to the sail, the lines that make up each paragraph, oh so clever, but do they signify anything? Sound and fury, and gassy stomachs and the idle lines uttered by idle poets and idol poets. And before long we are just playing with words but we aren't imparting much meaning. it's not going anywhere. it's a ship of fools. the coast line is rocky, the wind changes as each part of the chain of islands cuts off and shapes the gust. We try to remember what it was we were trying to see, what was that shimmer on the horizon between ocean and sky? Where are we going with this? So what's shiny? What appealing treasure is our boat travelling adventurer seeking? What gleams in our imagination? A voyage of self discovery - a adolescent curiosity about abandoned places and unseen vistas? A scientific excursion, a discursion in a life full of luxury and opportunities to find small off the beaten path cabins on abandoned Atlantic destinations? Who are we? Where are we going? And in the construction of fiction, those things are abstracts- the dark traveller, the dark night time, the road, the changing landscape- tropes and cinematic backdrop to get us to our arrival point. We turn the corner together around the point of land, the sun sets, the boat gently slides against the beach (because in fantasy you can beach your boat and not have to anchor or worry about damaging the hull). I wonder what other would be authors would make of the experience of sailing and how they would write about sailing and ocean travel metaphors. These whimsical lines about the process belie that I don't know how to pick a course and write. I look at the last sentence I just added and like an algorithm, I wander back and forth picking out the course- I know that this tack can arrive somewhere but it feels so unwieldy and random- like I have to go out of the way just to get anywhere. Narratively speaking- I must meander through metaphors and whimsy and impressions to craft a moment for the listener and the writer to share. And it drives me slightly mad because I like the terse stories that know where they are going, but also I like getting lost and seeing where the next sentence and the next piece of the story feels like. Frustration and joy in equal measures. The desire to create and the desire to be succinct, complete, finished. An anecdote or a mood. There was a tumblr post that moved me "if you write moments that you aren't sure what they mean or where they fit into a plot, you are still valid as a writer"- that there was some power in the capturing descriptions of momentary minutiae.
So what is the idea or thing I want to write about? The above is what happens when I just move my fingers over the keys thinking out loud. Next step I guess is to take a narrative, write some of it, and then take a walk and then come back after assembling the narrative as I walk.

Istanbul born performing artist, producer, composer and instrument builder Berke Can Özcan takes you on a captivating journey through the depths of nature on the Lycian Way -a 520 km long hiking trail in southwestern Turkey around part of the coast of ancient Lycia, named after the Lycian civilization that once ruled in this region-. As Özcan ventures deeper into uncharted territory on the trail, he stumbles upon a sight that sparks an artistic flame, the Twin Rocks. In collaboration with critically acclaimed Norwegian trumpet mastermind Arve Henriksen and Brooklyn-based baritone saxophonist Jonah Parzen-Johnson, Özcan immerses the listener in a mesmerizing soundscape that echoes the wonder and mystery of the trail leading to ancient Lycia. This collaboration weaves together a tapestry of sonic explorations that capture the essence of Özcan's journey. The ambient-jazz album's delicate balance between organic sounds and electronic manipulation creates a dreamlike atmosphere that transports the listener to the rugged terrain of the Lycian Way. Mastered by three-time Grammy winner Dave Darlington, each track on this ethereal album mirrors a different aspect of the journey to Twin Rocks, meticulously composed by Özcan, Parzen-Johnson and Henriksen with each section of the trail in mind. The album is infused with melodic bird songs and sound walk recordings that add depth and texture to the ethereal soundscape. Özcan’s array of self-crafted instruments made out of bamboos, soda bottle caps, straws, house keys, terracotta flower pots alongside with his long time companions like his steel drums, chimes, gongs, and vibraphone, serve as the medium through which he expresses the reflections of his encounters in his own world of rhythm and melody.
