Ough ough ough, you're cooking with this!! Because this ties it all so nicely and like. The laying out of the various ways it could've gone and who is actually good for Zaun/the Undercity.

What I mean is that if you look it as Jinx=Zaun you also get to project all these other relationships as metaphor for how all these characters (and their ideologies) interact with the idea of Zaun (in season 1):

Sevika being single-mindedly furious and uncompromising which can only lead to something breaking down the line.

Ekko who claims to reject it, but when it comes to it, he can't let it go. Stripped of all, he does in fact want a free Zaun, even when it's to his detriment. (Boy Savior indeed.)

Caitlyn is just. Terrified but can't manage to take the shot, because no matter how much Piltover tries to stomp it out it's not gonna happen.

Silco who loves her/Zaun with all of his being, identifies with her/its suffering but in spite of all of that, he's just not what she/it needs but he's also, due to circumstance, the only one she/it has at the time.

Vi is the odd one out here in this reading imo, but I also think that is intentional because Vi was always supposed to pick her sister over anything else, and that means transcending the metaphor and caring for Powder/Jinx the person, once the synthesis happens in her mind. But thinking about it, even that fits because Zaun the ideal is worth nothing if it isn't centered on people coming together in community.

Anyways, Arcane season one you will always be famous.

Arcane S2 wasn't as good because it wasn't about air

The common critique of Arcane season two was that "it didn't let the story breathe." I'm going to one-up that and state that season one set up an entire story about breathing and forgot that in season two.

Yes, yes, Arcane was a story about Piltover oppressing the undercity, but unlike a lot of other stories about social stratification, Arcane was very explicit about the methods Piltover uses to disenfranchise Zaun. Season one was clearly a story about eco-apartheid maintained through extractivist practices.

WHAT IS ECO-APARTHEID?

Ecological apartheid (also known as enviromental racism) is a form of disenfranchising and spatially separating a class of people through pollution, exploitation, and abuse of their local environment.

[E]nvironmental apartheid was largely instituted through rural marginalization, the use of rural space as an environmental means of marginalization... - Environmental apartheid: Eco-health and rural marginalization in South Africa

Topside and the undercity are basically one nation state with a blindingly stark fence between them. Piltover and Zaun are simultaneously connected and separated by the Bridge of Progress. Progress unites them and alienates them from one another. Progress is why Piltover is wealthy and clean, and it is why Zaun is impoverished and polluted. It is was on the Bridge of Progress that Silco incited the riot that led to Vi and Powder's orphaning and Vander's betrayal. It's where Ekko and Jinx have their standoff, and where the Hextech core is exchanged. In other words, progress is a border.

WHAT IS EXTRACTIVISM?

Prior to the proliferation of shimmer and the chembarons, industry in the undercity appears to be heavily centralized around one thing — fissure mining. Vi and Powder's parents used to be miners along with Vander and Silco. Jayce and Vi visit one of these mines and she explains the masks the workers use. Oh, and let's not forget the children don't have to yearn for the mines when they're dying in the mines!

The Zaunites' livelihood being dependant on the extraction of natural resources for the benefit of the Piltovans is what is known as extractivism — the exploitation of a resource-rich land and its people by a separate "global North."

In practice, extractivism has been a mechanism of colonial and neocolonial plunder and appropriation. This extractivism, which has appeared in different guises over time, was forged in the exploitation of the raw materials essential for the industrial development and prosperity of the global North. - Extractivism and neoextractivism: two sides of the same curse

The "North," in this case, clearly being Piltover. The resources being abused and exploited here aren't only the fissure mines, but also the bodies of the workers and those born around them. Viktor's illness, for example, is a product of growing up around the gaseous waste of the fissure mines. The Zaunites take the brunt of the side-effects of the pollution so that the topsiders don't have to. The "dregs" are kept below while materials, both people and things, that are deemed useful get to rise to the top. The processing of raw materials and shipping happens in Piltover, so it's the Piltovans who get a final say on the profits.

Silco and the chembarons establish their power by creating an industry that operates outside of fissure mining that doesn't rely on the patronage of the global North. Needless to say, drug dealing isn't exactly a noble trade, but extraction, processing, and distribution are mainly controlled and operated by Zaunites, which allows them a source of wealth and power that they can leverage against Piltover. To use a more recognizable phrase, they own the means of shimmer production.

I find it fascinating that shimmer is made by killing innocent underground creatures. Cannibalizing your own kind for a temporary boost of strength that eventually turns the user into a monster? It's a poignant metaphor about the infighting of not just the chembarons' gangs but of oppressed groups in general. And while shimmer offers power and brings in wealth, that's not what the undercity truly needs and only corrupts it even further.

Nah, the show has been very clear that what Zaun needs is breathable air.

SEASON 2 FORGOT ABOUT AIR

Even outside of the air pollution caused by fissure mining, the theme of breathing and air is everywhere in season one. Ekko and the Firelights' community is built around a tree — the clean air it provides is the reason they've been able to sustain themselves. It is considered an oasis in polluted Zaun. Jinx's is often heralded by brightly colored smoke, and the way she signals to Violet is through a flare that emits it. Silco's altercation with Vander involves him almost drowning — Vander literally choking the air out of him. Silco, in reponse to this traumatic event, teaches Jinx to willingly submerge herself in a place without air by baptizing her in the same filthy water he was choked in.

In other words, air is life and purpose. Zaun's aesthetics are defined by gas masks and smoke. Meanwhile, the scenes in Piltover are clean and clear. Ekko and the Firelights' tree represented hope and the possibility of clean air in Zaun. Viktor was similarly associated to flowers that grew in the underground, symbolizing how beautiful things can live even in the harshest circumstances.

Environmental degradation, more specifically air pollution, is the raison d'être of topside-undercity conflict. Silco says as much when he threatens the other chembarons and reminds them of why he's in charge.

Have you forgotten where we came from? The mines they had us in? Air so thick it clogs your throat — stuck in your eyes. I pulled you all up from the depths, offered you a taste of topside and fresh air. I gave you life. Purpose. But you've grown fat and complacent, too much time in the sun. We came from a world where there was never enough to go around. That is why we fight. Do you remember? - The Boy Savior, Arcane S01E07

But by the second and third acts of season two, pollution may not as well exist in Zaun. How does Viktor's commune plant its flowers and grow its fruits? Does the Firelights' tree ever get cured of its corruption? Did everyone forget that the undercity is literally suffocating? Seriously, why is Ekko's storyline with the tree never resolved? Why give Jinx that monologue about a wispy goddess of air the fissurefolk pray to and never go anywhere with it?

JINX SHOULD HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED TO JANNA

The Grey presented an opportunity for Jinx to be the revolutionary hero Arcane wanted her to be. The enforcers have clearly aligned themselves with pollution and poison, and Jinx could have been the herald of their wind goddess come to answer the people's prayers for relief. But the people don't rally behind Jinx because of her association to Janna, clean air, or her repelling the invading cops using bioweapons.

I firmly believe that Jinx being a symbol of the revolution because she blew up a government building is missing a few steps. She'll get radicals who already hated Piltover behind her, sure, but the everyday Zaunite would more likely blame her for causing chaos and bringing trouble to their streets. Because the average person doesn't really care who's on the council or if a politician so far from them dies. But they do care if the cops are suddenly at their door with tear gas because an extremist junkie decided to commit arson.

The first act of season two had me very optimistic that the show was picking up where it left off with its enviromental themes. The enforcers use The Grey, polluted air, to surpress dissent and hunt down Jinx. Jinx fights back under a mural of Janna, the goddess of clean air. Her plan involves her using air to push back The Grey and send the gust up to Piltover. After being actively gassed by the enforcers, Jinx and her association to colorful wind becomes a symbol of hope and revolution to the people of the undercity.

Except that's not what happens. The Grey is only shown affecting targeted criminals with no collateral damage to civilians despite it being deployed all over the trenches. The gusts of wind Jinx pushes up to Piltover don't make topsiders experience the air pollution Zaunites suffer. Instead, it just midly inconveniences them with paint splatters. In the end, The Grey is forgotten and has nothing to do with their fight in front of Janna's mural. Caitlyn gets a promotion despite gassing the entire underground with nothing to show for it, and the undercity idolizes Jinx despite her being the reason they were gassed in the first place.

ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION IS INTERPERSONAL RESTORATION

Unlike in the game, Arcane chose topside and the undercity to be originally established as one city — and I don't think that was done without reason. The nation of Zaun and its identity is established as a reaction to the suffering of those underground. A community developed centered around helping one another cope and survive through the pollution. In short, Piltover created Zaun.

Thus, the interplay between Piltover and Zaun extended to all plotlines and the relationships they explored and developed. Jinx and Vi, Vi and Caitlynn, Viktor and Jayce, Ekko and Heimerdinger — these are all relationships that reflect the tension between Zaun and Piltover. Family torn apart by civil war, bitter ex lovers, different ideological approaches to scientific advancement, intuitive inventiveness and practiced genius. Their relationships are born from a common desire and degrade because of that looming border inflicted by the pursuit of progress.

Piltover and Zaun is a single house fractured because of how it threw all its detritus in the basement as it sought to build a tower that will reach the skies. The whole building is threatening to crumble, especially now that someone threw a bomb at it like in the finale of season one. The status quo Arcane and we as a globalized eco-apartheid have is extremely precarious as is any foundation built on abuse and exploitation. A lot of people will cheer on the Jinxes who don't care so much about fixing it than they do burning it all down to express their understandable rage and grief, but that doesn't really fix the problem of having breathable air, does it?

Unfortunately, we'll never know how the show will wrap up the Zaunite plight because it was all but forgotten in season 2. The problem of Zaun was never that they needed to evolve or be perfect — it's that their environment and the people by extension were being suffocated.

In my perfect world, the finale would have addressed the lack of light and clean air in the underground. It would have mirrored how some bodies and relationships can never truly fully recover the damage that has been done. As in real life, restoration is not a substitute for not doing harm in the first place. But it could have ended with a hopeful message that burning it down and running away isn't the answer either.

When Viktor was healing Vander and decided that, despite the unprecedented effort and time, his natural, non-weaponized humanity was worth saving because of how much he means to his local community, I thought that was what they were going for. Alas, they didn't let the show breathe.

Okay, this is pure speculation and I’m just basically talking out of my ass, but IF the PR relationship theory is true, then Presley may be an indicator. I do believe that all Kaia’s public relationships were/ are PR stunts. So, let me fantasize a little. First, this whole Pete Davidson thing. After dating Ariana Pete was HOT(He still is tbh, I think that he is like cheap hype and publicity for celebs at this point). Cindy and Rande wanted Kaia to be famous since she was 10. I’m convinced that they paid for the articles before she was even legal. Then, as soon as Kaia turned 18, BOOM, Pete Davidson, dating, “candid photos” etc, etc. But then they probably had to break the contract, because Pete was indeed dealing with mental health/drug issues and our favorite helicopter parents finally realized it was a bad idea. I remember these photos of Kaia’s parents outside her apartment, when Pete was “freaking out”. It was late at night and I think it’s strange that the paps were there to witness this whole Kaia/Rande/Cindy/Pete drama. Gives me stages vibes too, tbh.

After Pete, there was this whole Cara thing going on. Presley’s meltdowns, tattooed face. If you read Daily Mails articles about this family in 2020, you can see that there was a lot of strange things going on and their reputation was not good, to put it nicely. Also, around this time Kaia got interested in acting. During this year, there were a lot of rumors and speculations about Kaia’s sexuality, what she has to do with Cara/Ashley etc. And then….surprisingly….she started dating Jacob Elordi! Yeah, right amid sexuality speculations, Presley’s meltdowns and starting her acting career. Her relationship with Jacob looks absolutely the same to me as her relationship with Austin. Stupid staged pap walks, zero chemistry, “happy and in love” articles. The only difference is that she posted something with him rarely on social media, unlike with Austin(Because making even a simple “Happy Birthday” is strictly forbidden, it seems). They date for a year and then suddenly break up. Maybe, this contract was just for one year, as Kaia was only 20 at that time. Besides, Euphoria hype was dying down slowly and there was another star raising on the radar. Austin is actually a very logical target for Kaia’s PR, especially since her family’s obsession with Elvis is creepy at this point.

So, yeah, a month after Elordi split, we have Kaia and Austin. Where did they meet? How? When? No one knows. I’m finally getting to the point why I think Presley might be an indicator of their relationship status. I hate this whole Gerber family, it gives me major Kartrashian vibes, BUT Presley is the only one I like and can tolerate. He seems the most real and genuine. I genuinely appreciate his idgaf attitude, so I think whatever PR campaign Gerbers have for Kaia, Presley is either not engaging at all or doing bare minimum. You mentioned that Presley unfollowed Austin for the first time in 2022. Looking back at her relationship with Elordi. Let’s say the contract was just for a year, maybe at first the contract with Austin was also just for one year, but then they saw how much publicity it brings Kaia and renewed it. Probably they went from one year contract to three. This may actually explain why Presley unfollowed Austin so suddenly this year.

But anyway, this is just my wild imagination. Also, sorry if my grammar sucks, English is not my first language, but I hope you got my point.

But yea, your theory is actually a good one. All we (and even the general public) have picked up on with this couple is that something seems off.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked at all of Kaia and Austin's relationship has always been just PR. I actually think it started as PR. Maybe it grew into something more "real" as time went on, but as of right now, the love seems to have fizzled out in this ship long time ago.

It also seems like she sought him out, and imo, that's always the kiss of death for most relationships with guys. I always kind of feel like the guy should be a little more into you than vice versa if you want a guy who gives you the best relationship.

Another thing, maybe I'm in the minority, but I actually feel like her relationship with Elordi seemed more genuine. He was always hanging around her and her friends even while he was dating Zendaya 😵‍💫, and I think that he and Kaia genuinely had things in common. They're also both kind of weird with weird tastes for things.

I kind of think Jacob had his eye on Kaia even while dating Zendaya. I think she had all the power in that relationship. She even told Elordi early on in the relationship to shave his mullet off. You're only doing stuff like that when the man went after you and you know that the man likes you a bit more than you like him.

With the Kaustin relationship, it seems pretty clear to me that Austin is pretty much running that show. Kaia seems needy, clingy (remember the Taylor Swift concert video? The perfume video?🤭), she changes her personality and habits to fit his, copies what he says in interviews, her family has supposedly been putting pressure on Austin to settle down with Kaia, etc. To me, Austin is clearly wearing the pants in that relationship. This might also be slightly different from the Aunessa relationship, where Vanessa (being older) may have been more of the one to control things. To me, Vanessa seemed way more secure in her relationship with Austin.... maybe because she was older? Or, maybe she just knew that he actually really loved her.

I kind of feel like if Kaia were actually the one who was in control in the Kaustin relationship, she wouldn't feel the need to do half the stuff she's been doing. She'd be perfectly secure in the relationship.

Your thoughts about Presley are pretty spot on. He seems like the least likely to try to keep up a fake rosy-colored view of the family.

He definitely unfollowed Austin again from social media, and hasn't re-followed him like he did Ayo. Make of that what you will.

cindy likes to write him love letters even as they continue to get older. they go from colourful scribbles to cute little legible messages. cindy always puts hearts in place of the tittles on her is, but when she's writing to felix, she doodles extras around or as a border. she has a stack of pink & blue paper to write them up onto. she likes slipping him little love notes in class when they're in high school and watching him turn bright red in the desk beside her. felix ends up picking up the same habit, writing long winding flowery letters in pretentious cursive with his rich boy fountain pen for her

when cindy plays house, she always calls the mother & father dolls cindy & felix. he finds out and is flustered beyond belief. she declares he's a father now of this cheap little woolen doll and he immediately becomes far too attached. ted is so confused. "i'm a father now, teddy, i don't have time to deal with your petulant whining". felix loves ditching him to spend time with cindy <3

felix likes to pamper cindy. she's always loved anything shiny & accessories, so he buys her all sorts of little gifts and trinkets to show he cares about her. felix struggles with saying "i love you" itself aloud, but he does his best to convey it in other ways like holding her hand or offering a fancy necklace whenever they spend time together

despite felix's struggle with saying "i love you" itself, he is a sucker for sappy nicknames. they are absolutely godawful. honeysuckle, sugarplum, my angelic flower, etc. cindy calls him babe and he comes out with "of course, my darling, delicate rosebud". felix is so unbearably smitten

they adopt a cat. you cannot tell me that felix isn't a cat person. cindy gets gravy and he is immediately attached. he insists that if they ever break up, he still gets visiting rights. he buys gravy all the best cat food, toys & beds. they bully children on roblox together. watch out seven-year-olds on dress to impress, cindix are here and they are slaying. their outfits are top tier. cindy keeps trying to bypass the swear filter, everything she makes is pink. felix falsely reports everyone who insults cindy. he gives everybody one star at most then cindy 5/5. (i have never played dress to impress, i am going off of knowledge from fashion famous when i was 7 and a duncanyounot video my sister showed me)

for all felix cares for cindy, he cannot stand her gum chewing. any chewing sets him off, he despises the sound of it. she does her best to remember not to have any around him, but it's a bit of a struggle when she nearly always has some in her mouth

cindy doesn't like the -ilys and felix immediately picks up on that. they aren't poor so he can't bully them for being urchins, but that's not enough to quell his disdain. he sees lily in the school debate team and immediately declares them arch-rivals (lily is so confused). he taunts billy about having "lost" cindy to him (billy could not care less). he's so proud of himself every time he thinks up a new insult for them

the name ava is a palindrome, meaning that no matter how you twist your tongue, or try to read it, back and forth, or from left to right, you’re always bound to produce the same sound. she was actually named by her father, who refused to settle for something more ordinary and conventional. it’s been said that he found inspiration in the ever beloved ava gardner, and the two women, given their shared names, share also a distinct look - that of sculpted cheekbones and vividly expressive eyes.

her parents had divorced quite early on, and most of her childhood, ava spent in bangkok with her mother, only to move to japan at the age of 16, all for the sake of her mother’s job.

currently, ava’s one of the more recent additions to the nariza bois crew, and really and truly, she’s the definition of a diva ( the mariah carey of nariza bois ), which either makes a person love or loathe her even more. there’s just something about a woman who refuses to pose next to someone’s car because it doesn’t match well with the colour of her lips. she’s miss ava ‘ i graced the pages of vogue, what makes you think i’ll pose next your car’ amarin. yet, there’s something about her attitude that makes most people crave it, much like cigarettes and sweets. sometimes, toothache comes in the shape of a woman.

there’s also this one joke that ava loves to tell and it’s that she should’ve been a rock star instead, but she just never learned how to play any instruments.

for someone who is surrounded by so many drivers/racers, ava doesn’t really drive. she prefers to be driven.

there’s one nightclub in miami that serves a special cocktail named after her, called DOUBLE A. it consists of bourbon, fine white sugar, and 2 dashes of cherry liqueur.

has that pam anderson style that she gladly mixed with the 00s trends.

her favourite drivers tend to be those who let her warm her toosh on the hood of their cars. at times, it’s just not that impossible to please her.

not sure what exactly you’re asking me here, anon, but if you’re asking me who don cherry is, that is unfortunately a question i can answer.

don cherry was what you might call a famous hockey personality. before he was involved in the media side of things, he was a coach for the boston bruins in the ‘70s (leading them to the SCF twice), and before he was a coach, he was mostly an AHL player. He played a single NHL game for the bruins during his playing career.

but the media side of things was how he really became well-known. more specifically, cherry got a segment on hockey night in canada called coach’s corner starting in the mid-eighties, when hockey coverage was really still small-fry in the sports world, but would soon become a big gig after wayne gretzky’s ‘88 trade to the kings and the subsequent rise in interest in ice hockey in the states. he kept the gig until 2019, when he was fired by sportsnet at 85 years of age for being racist on the air. which kind of sums it up more succinctly, actually: from at least 2010 onwards, don cherry was the hockey world’s racist peepaw that everyone uncomfortably and politely ignored at thanksgiving dinner.

or, at least you and the more down-to-earth part of the family ignored peepaw. your red-pilled jackass cousin from the other side of the family, however, spent a little too much time with peepaw growing up and always got the good cookies from him, so now he thinks peepaw might’ve had a point when he was talking about “those weak women and weird queers and dirty immigrants” and occasionally using the N word. i’m mostly talking about barstool sports, here, and the conservative parts of hockey culture. i dunno if you’ve ever wondered where it came from, but it wasn’t outta nowhere (and not the murky waters of “general societal misogyny and the patriarchy” either). to be fair, it might not be appropriate to lay the blame entirely at don cherry’s feet— same way you and your sibling turned out okay despite having the same peepaw as That Guy— but he sure as shit didn’t help, and he gave a lot of credibility to the most rancid dogshit discriminatory takes you’ve ever heard in your life.

(it’s genuinely hard to overstate his rampant racism. like, the comment he was fired for definitely wasn’t the first time, it had just gotten to the point where sportsnet couldn’t ignore it anymore and he’d used up literally all three dozen of his Get Out Of Jail Free cards already.)

anyway, the reason i mentioned it in connection with feminisation in fandom is because i was doing some introspection and thinking about fandom trends (as one does), and i realised that the rise of popularity in feminisation in hrpf happens to correlate with don cherry’s retirement. seperately, i was thinking about the shape of the squick i have around it, and i realised that part of the reason i get a hard squick from sid (and most players from around that generation) getting feminised probably has to do with the actual literal coverage and language within hockey media that was around as they were coming up and (still) when I got into hockey in 2015. as i’ve mentioned, it wasn’t just don cherry, but… it’s definitely noticeable that he was an impetus for the prevalence and use of that kind of language. you see, being an “outrageous” type of media personality and an old-school kind of chauvinist (among other -ists) meant that cherry got away with saying the most awful shit about players for years. when sid was a rookie, he called him a whiner, weak, a cryer, etc— yeah, flyers fans coined “cindy cryby”, but don cherry brought that kind of talk on national television. it wasn’t just sid, either (although sid was, in no particular order: too small, too pretty, too emotional, a whiner, too dainty, not tough enough. stop me if this sounds eerily like some weird demeaning kind of feminisation yet). any russian in the league got disparaged by him too, and if you dig up old quotes from him about ovechkin in particular, the language is kind of— slut shaming? idek how to phrase it. ovechkin was too loud, celebrated to much, wasn’t demure and solemn enough. ironically, this is when sid would get praised: the “good nice quiet canadian girl boy” to ovi’s “loud fun-loving slut russian” a lot of it had xenophobic undertones for sure, but something about how he spoke just made this type of derogatory feminising language very prevalent in hockey circles, even among professional coverage.

don cherry was fired around the time that kind of language became very much non grata anyway, but i just had a “huh.” moment about it that it’s especially died down in the five years since he’s retired and that the rise of feminisation (in more positive and interesting ways) in fic has increased since then. just interesting to note; power to the people and all that jazz.

The Daily Mail two days ago published an article about Kaia spotted on the set of Palm Royale in Los Angeles. The article talks about her walking Milo on set and how much she looks like her mother with that hairstyle you see in the photos, but the most important thing is that in the entire article there is no mention of Austin. It should be noted that lately the DM articles about Kaia often talk about either her mother, or her friend (definitely more talented than her) Ayo Edebiri, or even Milo, the poor dog that no one cared about all along the year and now it's magically back in the news (I think that after everything the nepo has done she desperately needs to show herself as the good girl who takes care of her little dog). I think it's quite clear that for the moment Kaia, no longer able to refer to Austin, is leaning on other famous people close to her, waiting to find the next hot guy in Hollywood from whom she can suck every bit of fame. And don't tell me that Kaia and Austin haven't been seen together for over a month because they're both busy on set. Austin yes, he is really busy on set because we see him practically every day, but Kaia definitely isn't, shooting a scene a month is not being busy on set. After the damage control pap walk at the beginning of october, Kaia remained in New York for many more days and was literally always seen alone out and about minding her own business, then she left for Los Angeles and from there she was seen only once on the set of Palm Royale (excluding the sighting from a few days ago), for the rest there were only sightings of her at parties and dinners with friends, at one of which we hear her clearly talking about a breakup that surprised her with a rather sad attitude. While all of this was going on, reports started coming out that Kaia's parents want Austin to hurry up and ask for her hand in marriage and go to couple therapy with her, to which Austin responded "Like hell!" (obviously he did it in a more polite way, but I'm sure he meant it 😂). I don't know about you, but as the situation is now we can already draw some initial conclusions in my humble opinion. Kaia needs outsiders to be relevant, yesterday someone asked me if Kaia was stupid and my answer was no, because she has the power to use people to her advantage. I don't think Ayo is her best friend, maybe they got along on the set and talk to each other from time to time, but now everything related to Ayo has to do with Kaia is stupid. If Kaia hadn't worn her mom's white dress in Tiff nobody would have talked about her, because the important thing in the news will always be that she looks like her mom or that she honors her mom, which even if I don't like it, has a lot of importance to people, since it marked an entire generation.

When Austin and Kaia's estrangement began in September, the Daily Mail stopped mentioning Austin in Kaia's articles, and as damage control approached, Austin's name came up again. I think after the article about Kaia's parents expecting an engagement, Austin ended this nonsense and she can no longer use his name to be relevant. What bothers me is that if they really broke up, I don't understand why it took so long to announce it, this is very absurd.

Regarding the estrangement, I understand that she is recording, but not every day, since she doesn't have a main character and in her free time she gets together with her friends and goes out to party, so something strange is happening, because she has always been one of those people who is able to travel to NY for a day for her show and then return home, so she hasn't done it because she doesn't want to or because everything is more than over.

The Mystery of the Vintage Bookshelf

There's been a new addition back in the kids' section -- a lovely collection of vintage Nancy Drew books. Many of us (myself included) read the yellow spine ones at some point in our childhood, and it's been fun hearing people reminisce. The most knowledgeable person at Island Books for all things Nancy Drew, to the point of having a tire cover on her car featuring the famous silhouette of the girl detective, is our very own Cindy. 

Cindy: First off, I have to start by saying that Island Books is kind of a weirdly random and magical place. If you take time while shopping here to look around, you'll notice some stuff that has been incorporated into our decor over the last bunch of years that was bequeathed to us by customers and former employees and friends who just wanted a home for some thing that they loved but no longer had space for or need for but couldn’t quite cast out into the unknown universe. We have a weird huge vase and a strange statue, a beautiful old set of World Book Encyclopedias above the travel section, a bunch of typewriters, an ancient mysterious machine, a ceramic Kleenex tissue dispenser that’s supposed to look like a leather bound classic and I don't even know what else without wandering around the store and admiring it all. But my personal favorite donation of late has been this: Donna Murphy, of Issaquah (There are two other Donna Murphys not-from-Issaquah who shop here), donated her entire Nancy Drew Collection to Island Books.

We promised we would keep them and care for them and Laurie Raisys had the ingenious idea to display them like an art installation on a dining room hutch topper three-shelf bookshelf thing with spindles (also a donation) and it looks fantastic! I encourage everyone, EVERYONE, to come and appreciate this new addition and have a look at this beautiful collection.

I’ve been a fan of Nancy Drew for many years as many of you know and it was fun looking through this collection and hearing Lori’s perspective on her year of reading Drewishly. We both read the Nancys in 4th grade (me in 1968 and Lori in 1986).

Neither of us remember the plots very well but we remember the experience. I remember the blue books, Lori remembers the yellow ones. And we both remember that we admired Nancy Drew and kind of wanted to be like her, even if for different reasons.

Lori: It’s definitely been a talking point at the kids' desk since it’s been put up! I haven’t revisited Nancy Drew since those early reads. My general recollection was that she had an outfit for every occasion and was able to handle anything. How did Nancy Drew come into your life?

Cindy: I met Nancy Drew when I was in 4th grade. In a new neighborhood in a new town with a new teacher in a new school. It would have been in 1968.

I never owned a Nancy Drew book until I was well out of college. My family didn't really have much of a bookcase at all. We had a collection of World Book Encyclopedias, the Childcraft How and Why Series, The American Heritage Illustrated History of the U.S., a handful of leather-bound classics, a few Readers Digest Condensed Versions of some popular novels of the time and the biggest dictionary money could buy. We were mainly a library family--My mother called it "America's best idea--” always following that up with: “And best yet, it’s free!”

Our tiny town library had what seemed like a massive collection of the blue tweed Nancy Drew books with the famous silhouette of the girl sleuth herself. I delved into each mystery eagerly and escapistly. Nancy thought fast, moved fast and was cool as a cucumber under pressure. She was afraid of no one and no thing. She scuffled and scuttled with mottled-skinned, scar-faced scoundrels and ill-tempered robbers (it was so easy to identify the bad guys in those days) and drove a cool roadster as expertly as she could jump on a sailboat and navigate it through a squall. She could hop on a plane and into a taxi to follow a suspect whenever detective duty called. She had plenty of money, her dad was always out of town, and Nancy had no real guidelines PLUS a good-natured housekeeper who made waffles for breakfast. Nancy Drew was my dream self...or at least lived my dream life.

I don’t remember her having the perfect outfit for every occasion, Lori, but that’s just me.

Lori: I think it's likely we were focused on different things. I wonder what I would make of her now. How did the character of Nancy Drew even come to be? 

Cindy: Nancy Drew began as yet another “plotline” conceived by Edward Stratemeyer, a prolific writer of childrens’ books who began hiring a team of writers to bring his many plot ideas to life, thus creating “The Stratemeyer Syndicate.” Those manuscripts found a publisher in Grosset and Dunlap and his massive collection of serialized stories for kids and young adults became a huge commercial success--even throughout the Depression Era. He created The Rover Boys, The Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift, Tom Swift Jr. and The Hardy Boys.

In 1929 Stratemeyer thought he'd expand his success with The Hardy Boys detective series to create a new series starring a teenage girl detective. Her name would be Nancy Drew (almost "Diana Drew," almost "Nancy Dare" and, most cringingly, almost “Stella Strong”). He then wrote three two-page outlines for the first three books and hired a young woman writer to flesh out the character and create three novels around his three plots. The novels were to be 25 chapters, 200 pages long, and each page (if possible) and every chapter (absolutely) should end “mid-situation” which is, I guess, what they called “a cliff hanger” in the olden days.

That young writer was Mildred Wirt Benson and she, like all the other writers in the Stratemeyer Syndicate, was contractually sworn to secrecy over her authorship. The books would be attributed to “Carolyn Keene” a pseudonym that would be shared by many writers over the course of the Nancy Drew mystery series, including a few men, most notably, Walter Karig, who wrote three in a row (#s 8,9 and 10, when Mildred was in a depression-era pay dispute). Walter Karig was the first Syndicate author to attempt to break the contractual vow-of-secrecy secret authorship thing.

But back to Mildred Wirt Benson, the first Carolyn Keene, and the one most responsible for the character and kick ass cultural icon Nancy Drew became—

The Nancy Drew Books began outselling The Hardy Boys Books in no time flat. Stratemeyer had already hired his oldest daughter, Harriet, as an editor (ironically not wanting her to work outside of the home after college) and she ended up playing the second most influential part in the ongoing creation of Nancy Drew—she started by outlining plots for Mildred and over time would end up writing 25 of the novels herself between 1959 and 1979 long after Mildred Wirt Benson’s 23 book tenure. Harriet also (starting in 1959) took charge of some hefty revisions of the first 34 books to remove outdated language and ethnic stereotypes (to her credit) and to her uncredit, removed a lot the ethnic stereotypes by removing a lot of the ethnic characters.

Also, under Harriet’s revisionist handiwork, Nancy Drew became a little less independent and conformed more to the societal ideal of girls and women in the fifties as being more pleasant, domestic and docile than Mildred Benson’s Nancy Drew: Nancy started following the police rather than leading them to the scene of the crime, would ask her father for permission rather than doing whatever she pleased and would offer to help wash the dishes after lunch before rushing off to solve her latest mystery.

I’m glad I grew up with the unrevised versions.

What I DO have a problem with is Nepobabies who are not talented in their craft still getting roles over other better actors, and Nepobabies who aren't even looking like they're WORKING to perfect their craft.

Which OCs have New Year's Resolutions? What did they decide to do this year, and how likely are they to succeed?

Ooh thank you! Sorry if the formatting gets funky, I'm doing this on my phone. And I'm just answering for their relative years in their stories, not bumping them all up to 2024 (cause that wouldn't work for some of them lol... mutation or not, Madison would be in her 80s)

Rae just resolves to have a quieter year this time around. 1983 was a whirlwind with a lot of really difficult times, so she's hoping '84 will mean her and Warren getting their own place and settling into a somewhat-normal life for the first time. Likely to succeed, though quieter still doesn't mean quiet.

Robin resolves to try an opera she's completely unfamiliar with this year. Usually she mainly goes out for shows she's already familiar with, so she wants to try something newer, more obscure, or in a language she hasn't sung in yet. Semi-likely to succeed (depends on what shows Cindy runs at the opera house)

Jasper doesn't usually set a resolution (they think it's a little hokey and always get stressed by the pressure), but after pressure from their mother and friends end up setting an obligatory "straight A's this year" just to appease them. Very likely to succeed - but actually defies the odds and doesn't, due to unforseen terrible circumstances (read: their boyfriend dying a tragic death before being brought back to life)

Ophelia resolves to solve one previously-unsolved medical problem with her technology. It doesn't have to be something particularly big or flashy, though she'll probably shoot high anyway. Most of her recent tech has been more focused on the multiverse or her own vigilantism, and she wants to get back to her biomed roots. Very likely to succeed.

Quinn resolves to run by the end of the year. It doesn't have to be far, and it doesn't have to be fast, but she wants to stick with PT and get a little more of her mobility back and she thinks that's a good place to start. [Obligatory note that this is NOT me saying disabled people have to make any sort of resolution towards becoming more abled. Quinn as a character in particular was a very active person before her accident, seeks to get back to that, and has a habit of pushing herself to far to do so.] Unclear whether she'll succeed, since they don't know how receptive their body will be to the PT going forward.

Kestrel resolves to visit someplace they wandered to in their "shapeless period" again, and this time form some real memories there. They also resolve to begin celebrating Hanukkah again, they haven't celebrated since they were a kid and they want to start reintroducing that faith into their life. Very likely to succeed on both accounts.

Madison doesn't set a New Year's resolution. She takes life as it comes, survival and general happiness is really all she hopes for at any given year.

Katherine resolves to sell at least one piece to the Smithsonian. She's already been approached by other museums for her artworks and exhibit-fillers (think dioramas, paintings, things to set the scene or convey ways of life), but so far hasn't sealed a deal with the big guns yet. Again, doesn't have to be a show-stopper, but she wants to be able to say her work is hanging in the most famous museum in the US. Coin flip on success - she's a very skilled artist, but the Smithsonian is the big leagues and they might not need anything new for their exhibits this coming year.

did you know bojack starts drinking in 1989 during the filming of horsin around specifically the Cindy crawfish episode (S6E1) but is surprised in 1993 when he drinks the spiked punch at his halloween party (S5E8)? he also describes season three of horsin around (likely premiering in September 1989-may 1990) as a big cocaine year for him (S2E9), meaning 1989 was the first year he drank immediately was followed by cocaine usage , it was also the year they got Cindy crawfish to guest star which means that it was towards the apex of his fame when he started to indulge in that way. but him being like "oh someone spiked the punch!! oh no!!! I should just have one drink" at the halloween party in 1993 always confused me since it's established he started drinking in 1989 and I thought it was just a continuity error (which to be fair it definitely was) but it honestly makes me think that at that point he'd been trying to control his drinking in the early 90s (I thought maybe it would correlate with beatrice visiting him at the horsin around taping because he immediately asks the waiter for a drink at the restaurant but that took place in 1988 [S2E1]) and had ups and downs which is really interesting? I think when I consider bojacks fame in the 90s I always assume he was most famous and at his worst when the show was airing and it's made obvious he was not doing well during the filming, but considering he seemed to not want to immediately drink during MOST of horsin' arounds filming adds a lot to his character . like after the show was canceled and herb was fired he established his worst behaviors.. and I think the show emphasizes herb getting fired was BAD for bojack's brain but not so much as "bojack began his really bad cycles after herb was fired".... interesting! I wonder if "therapy doesn't work for me im too smart" came from prior experience in a weird way. I dont know a lot about actual 90s celebrities and their periods of addiction unfortunately but I think being sent away to inpatient service for a few weeks after a public incident was a popular punishment and I think bojack had to suffer through those a few times. or if he wasn't doing any projects he didn't have to... regardless the fact that most of his addictions became central to his life AFTER horsin' around was canceled is fascinating. anyway
