sometimes when you're sick and tired of standing on your own two feet, you learn to seek out someone who will hold you up. when the darkness in your soul begins to consume you, you learn to hear the gentle souls who were consumed in it years ago. a mantra of 'let us in' turns into a chorus of 'i know you hear me' when you try to ignore the whispers in the corners of your mind. the fog rolls in during those moments you feel alone.

but that moment you hear the voices of your family trying to drag you under that fog, you know you have to run. you scream into the dark, begging to be saved.

but then it comes: you meet him. the one who stands in front of the monsters in your head and protects you. he murmurs how he will "save you" from the things that claw their way through your mind. every second spent with him, touching him, loving and being loved by him begins to wash away the fog. light slips in, creeps into the corners and sends the shadows running. he pulls in every unravelled thread. he becomes the burning golden light that soothes your soul like balm on a burn.

he sings lullabies in his mother tongue to soothe the snakes that whisper and he lets you trace the ink on his skin to distract you from the cracks in your heart—all while tugging you up from the dark and into his warm light.

he teaches you how to turn your mind from a war zone into a home.

he saves you.

when I was just over a year old, I was playing tag with my brother and slammed my head into a solid oak bunk bed. I had to get six stitches and I have a scar on my right eyebrow to this day! 😭
