Uncovered: ‘Keep On With Falling’ by The Boo Radleys

After almost 24 years The Boo Radleys, formed of original members, Sice, Tim Brown and Rob Cieka, released their new 11 track album Keep On With Falling in March 2022 on their own record label Boostr. It stood to reason that they would ask long time collaborating artist/designer, Stephen A. Wood to create the album cover artwork and we asked Stephen to talk us through his striking work, that has been shortlisted for the Best Art Vinyl 2022 Award.

“I was loving that title ‘Keep On With Falling’, suggesting as it does, a nightmarish but fully awake spiralling descent into the white, a colour which is usually associated with ascension, but not, of course, in this case…

Serene Velocity, the name of a 1970 experimental film, that is anything but serene, showing different focal-length footage of a corridor and detailed in the same cinema textbook from which the first ever Boo Radleys mini-LP sleeve was purloined, has long been a fascination of mine, and I’ve always wondered how best to capture this feeling in one static, stand-alone image.”

“To achieve this on past artworks I’ve often used radiating lines and perspective; this time I added spirals and various bulbous creations too, using the ‘take what you can, and rearrange it’, maxim of the Boo Radleys, to mash and mesh it up even further… so for Keep On With Falling there’s a beatific tumble through the distorted vegetal borders of Giant Steps, orange or black on that sleeve, now turned white-hot and mangled up until it looked like it felt right to me.”

He continues, “The back cover art source is a side-entrance of St. Mary Magdalene on London’s Holloway Road, turned inside out until it looks a bit like a spaceship interior, or maybe (spoiler alert) like something I saw once in Episode 17 of The Prisoner. I think also it suggests a rather more restful scene than the front cover art, and soothes the eyes if you’ve been looking at the front for too long. Which I hope you do anyway, of course!”

Ale to takie żałosne jest dla dziewczyny ktora dalaby się pokroić za jeden gest tego faceta, a odkrycie jest jedno, to o czym marzysz i fantazjujesz inna ma na pstryknięcie palcem. I nie chodzi o to, ze jestes zbyt pewna siebie po prostu widzisz, bez jakiegoś zbędnego jadu, ze laska reprezentuje poziom parteru, a on gania, się cieka, a Ty czekasz i karmisz nadzieja. To jest żałosne, a zarazem silniejsze ode mnie. Chcialabym sobie to wybic z głowy. Jestem jakas jebnieta.

The Boo Radleys- Keep On With Falling (Boostr)

Last summer a single, then an EP, and even a short fall tour sparked the return of The Boo Radleys. Now a full-length album is being released.  Simon ‘Sice’ Rowbottom, Tim Brown and Rob Cieka began writing the songs via file sharing, giving them each the ability to add any details they each wanted. Being a huge Boos fan, I was happy to hear they were back. I first heard them when my brother played me their EP, Boo! Forever. At first, I thought my speakers were blown, but then I realized it was sonic bliss. I soon began collecting all of their output. The new album continues where they left off, Kingsize’s Britpop, and this time around guitarist Martin Carr does not join in.

The album opener, “I've Had Enough I'm Out (Album Version),” sucks you in with soft, acoustic guitar and then kicks in with the pop we’ve known to love about the Boos. Add some strings and gorgeous harmonies, which I totally forgot about with them, and the album is off to a great start. Apparently, it’s Sice’s current stance on religion. The next song, the title track “Keep On With Falling.” brings to mind the “Wake Up Boo!: Music for Astronauts” acapella portion from a b-side off of the Wake Up Boo! single in 1995. The beautiful Beach Boy-ish harmonies lead into a bouncy pop song with an amazing keyboard ending.

“All Along” is another one to sing along to with its echoing guitar effects along with a driving rhythm section. I’m just going to throw this out, it’s a song Tahiti 80 could have written. Amazing keyboard solo as well.

The rhythm section really kicks in on “I Say A Lot Of Things.” They bust out the horns as well, another Boo trait I forgot about that always adds a nice touch.

An acoustic guitar intro on “Tonight” is a great transition to what appears to be the slowest track on here. But then layered harmonies add to this as it builds and builds to a faster beat. Here come the beautiful strings again as well. Back and forth with its tempo has me loving this one. It builds to a blistering guitar solo and softly ends with that gentle acoustic guitar.  

“A Full Syringe And Memories Of You (Album Version)” brings the band back to full throttle with a bang. A chirping synth carries the tune. Blasting guitars, especially the lead solo adds to this track. Here’s the EP version:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F4zrfF9II0

“Call Your Name” begins with a dreamy, eerie keyboard that transforms into a song Julee Cruise could easily add to her setlist. It ends with another keyboard and guitar jam.

With “Here She Comes Again,” the dub intro starts off as one of my least favorites on the album. But that all changes when Sice’s “C’mon Kids” distorted vocals begin. It then takes off and turns into a mishmash of sounds with those luscious harmonies again!

The next track, “You And Me,” has a New Order keyboard/bass feel to it. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe it’s a nod to their 90s roots. And that’s just one of the reasons I love this song. The vocals really stand out on this one.

“I Can’t Be What You Want Me To Be” is another rocker for the album that begins soft and then explodes. Their original 90s sound really stands out on this one, plus some keyboards.

The album ends with “Alone Together.” Imagine a “Baba O’Riley” intro going out of control. It continues with an explosion of sound through distortion and a very tight rhythm section. At the end, re-enter the “BO’R” synth with a nice fade out of keyboards and the album’s over.    

Eleven amazing pop songs worth the wait, as well as numerous colored vinyl versions to pick from. If you’re like me, I’ll be buying the collector’s double CD version with its numerous bonus tracks. I’m also hoping the band has plans to tour the US.  ERIC EGGLESON    www.thebooradleys.com

Romford polygraph used in murder case

A Romford polygraph test could have helped police in preventing a murder case.

The case

A predator strangled a vulnerable woman to death in Romford when their paths crossed on a bus.

Valentin Lazar, 21, attacked 45-year-old Maria Rawlings with a wooden stick embedded with nails and a knife before leaving her naked in undergrowth in Romford, east London, in May last year.

The labourer, who admitted the murder, has been told he is “evil” by Rawlings’s family as he was put in jail at the Old Bailey on Thursday.

The hearing

Addressing Lazar in court, her father, Tony Rawlings, said: “Your 15 minutes of anger towards a defenceless grandmother has caused me and my family a lifetime of pain.”

Judge Mark Lucraft QC jailed Lazar for life with a minimum term of 23 years and six months.

He said: “This murder involved an intoxicated woman alone late at night and she was particularly vulnerable”.

Leaving the victim naked added to her “humiliation and degradation”, he added.

Further evidence

Earlier, prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones QC told the court: “It was an assault of exceptional violence, savage and sustained.”

Outlining the facts, he told how Rawlings had visited King George hospital in Chadwell Heath complaining of a headache after suffering a head injury on the evening of 3 May last year.

Rawlings left hospital without anyone seeing he. She then got on a bus just after 11pm and she came across Lazar.

The mother-of-two, who had been staying with her daughter in Witham, Essex, got off the bus when it terminated, along with her killer.

They appeared on CCTV to engage in a brief conversation before Lazar guided his victim by the arm towards some shrubbery where they disappeared from view.

Violent act

After 31 minutes, he emerged from the undergrowth alone, with Rawlings’s white handbag slung over his shoulder. He rifled through the bag then discarded it on the pavement, the court heard. After the attack, Lazar boarded another bus, eventually arriving home after 1am.

Rawlings’s body turned up in the undergrowth and a dog walker told police at about 2.30pm the next day in the Little Heath area. A baseball cap with the defendant’s DNA on it was left near to the body.

A postmortem examination found Rawlings died from neck compression and a blunt force head injury. The court heard there were more than 100 sites of blunt force trauma, 15 rib fractures, injuries from multiple blows to the head and defensive wounds.

Murder weapon

The court were told a piece of wood with nails poking out of it was at the scene. Other injuries were made by a single-edged blade, pathologist Dr Matt Cieka said.

Jones suggested a possible “sexual motive” to the murder because Rawlings had bruises on her inner thighs and was found naked.

After an appeal, Lazar, a Romanian national living in rented accommodation in East Ham, was identified on social media.

In statements by her two daughters and father, Rawlings  as a “fun-loving soul that wouldn’t cause any harm to anyone”.

Her older daughter, Katie Rawlings, told how they used to work in a cafe together. Katie said: “My mum was such a bubbly person. She loved everyone and wore her heart on her sleeve.”

She told the court that thoughts of her mother’s last moments were on repeat in her mind.

The outcome

In mitigation, Jennifer Dempster QC accepted it was a “cowardly and unprovoked” attack which she could not provide an explanation for. She said Lazar had said: “When I left Ms Rawlings she was alive. I did not intend to kill her.”

Dempster said Lazar would regret what he had done for the rest of his life.

Speaking outside court after the sentencing, Tony Rawlings said: “My family and I have endured the most horrific eight months imaginable at the hands of a predator who took my vulnerable, beautiful daughter’s life.”

He thanked the Metropolitan police and legal team for helping to bring Lazar to justice, but added he had expected him to receive more years in prison for the “horrific, savage attack”.

Police’s response

DI Adam Callaghan, of Scotland Yard, told police “Within an hour of meeting Lazar, Maria was left fto die in the bushes”.

“Today’s sentence brings the legal proceedings to a close and I hope that Maria’s family can find a measure of closure in knowing that the man who took her from them has been removed from society where he can no longer pose a threat to women. Our thoughts are with them today”.

Polygraph testing to protect lives

With the Romford community left in pure disbelief to the violent crime, they are now pushing police to carry out regular polygraph testing. They feel reassured that with suspects taking polygraph testing upon arrests, they can be sure who is guilty or not. Police and the community are hoping to offer protection by finding guilty suspects earlier than detected. They also say the testing will help to deter future crimes by would-be repeat offenders.
